For the mature, family-oriented TV drama series Providence, nothing less than intelligent, thoughtful songs would suffice for its soundtrack. And from the folksy style of Dar Williams and Jonatha Brooke to the country-pop of Rebecca Lynn Howard and Kim Richey, this collection of songs delivers the goods. Most of the songs here would fall into the category of adult contemporary--Williams's ode to psychotherapy is lyrically incisive and fluffy with harmony, and Howard belts her delicate ballad with the elegant poise of Faith Hill. Individually, most of the songs manage to avoid AC's blandness, especially Shawn Colvin's sweet, wistful retelling of the Beatles' "In My Life," the show's theme song, and Titiyo's tart "Come Along." Yet as a whole, Providence can occasionally be bogged down by its deep sentiments, slow tempos, and monotonous instrumentation, especially near the end of the disc. While not a major flaw, unfortunately it does threaten to overwhelm the sterling songs included wherein--like Providence, music deserving of a wide audience. --Annie Zaleski

5 out of 5 stars Lovely listening........2006-11-04

I love this CD. I enjoyed watching Providence on TV, and miss the series very much. The songs in the CD bring back many memories and are great listening for driving, working around the house, or just lying on the couch on a rainy afternoon. A MUST buy.

5 out of 5 stars "Let the Sun Fall Down Around You".......2005-04-30

This wonderful CD came up in an e-mail conversation with a friend recently and reminded me just how really good it is. One of my favorite shows ever on television was Providence, starring Melina Kanakaredes. Like the show itself, which was warm and funny, and much like life itself, hard to define, the sountrack is an eclectic mix of the various feelings we have in our day to day struggle to move our lives forward while savoring the good moments.

Those fans of the show like myself will find much to love here, and will probably remember certain episodes where these songs played in the background. No fan of the show will ever forget the first time they heard Marc Cohn's "The Things We've Handed Down" as Melina Kanakaredes watched home movies of her deceased mother, who would appear to her daughter to guide and prod her in the right direction.

Eva Cassidy's "Songbird" is just too good for words so I won't try. There are two versions of "In My Life" here. Besides the version we heard at the beginning of every episode, we get Shawn Colvin's cover of this Beatle's tune, and it is quite excellent. Gus' "Laugh I Could Learn to Love" fits right in with the warm feeling this teriffic show left in our hearts every week.

Jonatha Brooke's "Linger" perfectly captures in pop fashion the approval we all seek from our most cherished loved ones, who we sometimes have the most trouble relating to. "Forgive" is a place everyone has been in their personal relationships; ready to move on but still not ready to let go of our hurt. Rebecca Lynn Howard has some wonderful vocals on this song. "What Do You Hear in These Sounds" has the humor and angst in life wrapped up in a cylindrical melody which is infectious. Dar Williams does a nice job on this selection. "Con Te Partiro" is a beautiful Andrea Bocelli selection with the graceful feeling of the show itself.

The album closes with Chantal Kreviazuk's fine version of "In My Life" and Beth Nielsen Chapman's "Say Goodnight." It was too soon to say goodnight to this most wonderful of shows, but this CD lets us relive a few of the fine memories we made gathered around the television eating popcorn and watching something of quality come our way, and as always, pass much too quickly. So say goodnight but not goodbye and pick up this warm reminder as soon as you can.

5 out of 5 stars Simply beautiful!.......2003-01-22

Gosh, was this cd hard to find. But I am SO glad I did. This is simply one of the most beautiful soundtracks I've ever heard. I love to listen to this at the end of the day. My favorites are without a doubt "Songbird" and Chantal's "In My Life". I have heard many versions of "In My Life" over the years, but this is my favorite. Buy this cd if you can find it. You won't regret it!

3 out of 5 stars Like the show, ho-hum........2003-01-09

There is a good reason to avoid soundtracks. Without the context of the show, the songs/tunes have to stand on their own. With a couple exceptions, Eva Cassidy's "Songbird" and the two renditions of "My Life", it is pretty dull stuff. Unless you are a huge fan of Providence and can place the tune with the show, I'd pass.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING SOUNDTRACK.......2003-01-07

NO MATTER IF YOU ARE OR ARE NOT A FAN YOU WILL LOVE THIS COLLECTION OF MUSIC. NEVER HAS THEIR BEEN A GREATER TV SERIES SOUNDTRACK. NBC CANCELLED PROVIDENCE, EVEN THOUGH IT IS STILL A WONDERFUL SHOW. I'M NOT A DIEHARD FAN OF THE SHOW, BUT I STILL SPENT MY FREE FRIDAY NIGHTS WATCHING IT. THIS CD IS JUST A TOKEN TO ALL THE FANS WHO ENJOYED THE SHOW FOR SO LONG. EITHER WAY I HIGHLY RECCOMEND YOU BUY THE CD WHILE YOU STILL CAN BECAUSE IT WON'T BE AVAILABLE FOREVER.

4 out of 5 stars Refreshing.......2007-03-30

This is a great album, and quite refreshing I must say. If you haven't heard these guys before, then you are definitely missing out! Their sound is nothing at all like Fall Out Boy or Panic! At the Disco, the sound that's typical for a Fueled By Ramen band. I would say they are more along the line of The Hush Sound, but more edgy and rocky! Did I just say "rocky?"

3 out of 5 stars I miss the REAL This Providence.......2006-12-22

Because they left Rocketstar records, which was the best label for the best type of music genre, they went to Fueled By Ramen, which also labels Panic! At The Disco. Just because This Providence is in the same record label as Panic! At The Disco doesn't mean they have to sound like them. I'm not a fan of Panic's! genre of music. I liked the indie and emo approach to music. Now it's all gone. So now I'll stick to Copeland.

5 out of 5 stars Not your average FBR band.......2006-12-04

This band is everything and more. Their Christian morals really show in the lyrics, but it isn't a problem with me.
If you feel strongly about another religion it might not be for you, I can imagine the awkwardness.
My favorite off the album is 'Losing Control' which references to 'Our Flag is White' from their previous album.
The songs are catchy and very well-written, and the two-way vocals are great.
The last two songs, The Pursuit of Happiness 1st and 2nd movement pretty much mirror society.
Overall I love this album, worth the 21 dollars CAD I had to pay for it...

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2006-11-03

Wow. I must say This Providence is the best band ever. Musically and lyrically they are so unique. I never heard anything like it. Lyrics are relevant and thought provoking while music keeps your toes tapping. They are not your typical pop-rock band. I honestly can't label what they are. But I heard they tend to sound little bit like Academy Is and Gatsbys American Dream which is not bad, considering they are awesome bands too. I, however recommend this band over all the bands I heard this year. Go to purevolume and listen to their tracks and you'll understand what I am talking about. I heard that these guys are Christians and their faith often times shine through their music but they don't preach though so them being Christians have almost nothing to do with the quality of the music presented here. I don't know if they will ever get big because of their in your face style of lyrics but they certainly show a lot of talent. Buy this album! It is worth your money and more. Sweet melodies and agressive guitars and unique vocals, what more can you expect from a rock band?
Seriously this is awesomeness to the Max

5 out of 5 stars Wow....Simply a true Greatness.......2006-12-22

Every song here is the best. Every song is a masterpiece of songwriting. It is definitely an indie/emo genre song album. This was so good that Amped 3 for the Xbox 360 had to take a music lisene to incorporate their fabulous music into the game. Actually, it was Amped 3 that I heard of This Providence from. Believe me, if you are a fan of emo and indie music, get this. It's going to be a rare CD. When it is, you'll be permanently missing out on the best albums of the year. Every song here is good. But the only reason you should be getting this is for "Catching my Breath." Runners up to that song are: "To Kill This", "Best Wishes", and "Our Flag is White". Another thing that makes me like this band is that they are Christians. I'm a Christian too. But This Providence doesn't make it so that they are showing it off to a strong point. It's all good though. That's fine. The main reason that this is good is because it is 100% pure, refined EMO/Indie. Some people would cry their eyes out because its theme, loss of love and life, emanates its presence so emphasizingly. Just get this album. This quartet is extremely talented. They play their songs in standard guitar tuning, so that shows real talent, the frontman being able to sing and access different complex finger chords during the song. The bassist, like the frontman, has real talent because he can solo on the bass because he has a great voice. Another thing these guys incorporate is that they have two voiceovers. They sing over each other, next to each other, etc. This results in a great sounding song. You might think that they utilized a bad thing, but no. For an emo band and indie as well, This is one of the best things that can compliment an already great album and music system. For $12.oo, this is a snatch. THis should have been the price of an Immortal Souls special CD pack (Once Upon A Time in The North) which costs about $20.00. So this album is truly recomended. Get it now.

5 out of 5 stars Still excited.......2006-01-04

Well, I actually reviewed this album 7 months ago, and bought that albums about 16 months ago, and I have to say that I am still get excited thinking about this album. I cannot emphasize what a breath of fresh air this album has been to me. I'm telling you, don't over look this one. This one is easy to overlook, because at first glance it may seem average, but it is sooo much better once you realize that this album is deeply involved in the music. If you listen closely to their use of 7th chords, harmonies, rhythm, etc. you will realize what I am saying. Nearly a year and a half since I bought this album at their CD release party and I am more thrilled with this one than ever.

5 out of 5 stars In a genre full of "early november" wannabe's..........2005-11-17

I heard about "This Providence" through means of browsing through bands on Amazon like: Copeland, and Daphne Loves Derby. I listened to the samples and thought it sounded like a more upbeat DLD, who I like a lot. So I went out and bought this. At first I was a bit dissapointed with the only 10 tracks on the CD but after a listen I was quite impressed, enough even to visit their site and see exactly what this band is was all about.

It was only a little less than a month ago that TP's drummer, Paul Benson left the band. After I heard, I immediately thought negatively... "Great I just bought a band's LP that is breaking up as I speak." This sucks.... (not quite) I'm happy to say that they recently employed a new drummer: Ryan Tapert. So I'm a happy reviewer knowing that this great band will not cease to exist, but will continue to grow and stretch out the talent they cleary possess.

TP is at first glance, a typical indie boy band. You know, that typical Dime-a-dozen fad induced formula that's really common in this genre. Turns out the quartet are christians, not a christian band, but Christians in a band. Which is something I like a lot. It's obvious that the girls will eat them up being that not only the frontman/guitarist is highly attractive to the Female population, (and Australian) but the rest of the band's members follow closely behind with an image that seems to be made for MTV. These guys are far from that status however, and will definately rise to indie-fame alongside the likes of their seattle emo/pop brothers.

Like I said before, TP is from Seattle, along with 500 other indie bands that want to be the next "the early november" I wouldn't blame you for refusing to listen to them because of it either. Among all those bands though, there are a few that stick out... I believe TP is one of them. There's lots of melody on this CD, something that always sucks me into a band. (and seriously they had me from the start) These guys are so infectiously catchy that you'll be crying about it. Just listen to the chorus to "truth and reconciliation". It's a monster melody that will turn over any doubting fan in mere seconds. That's just one quality that makes TP a great band.

The production too, is super-slick. I believe this was produced by the same guy responsible for "Gatsby's american dream", which is definately not a bad thing. It's very polished, but not overly so like a lot of bands in this pool.

I read in a review that this CD was catchy and fun, but not life changing. Quite frankly, I have no idea what that guy is talking about! The lyrics here are phenomenol. The fact that these guys are christian, has nothing to do with it. There's the usual love/breakup songs, but much of it deals with life in itself. In fact, much of this wouldn't be out of place if featured on the OC. It's that kind of CD that goes great as a summer soundtrack. (too bad it's winter where I live)

The formula is simple yet complex. Occasional double-time drum patterns keep things fresh, on top of well laced guitar parts and a sea of vocal melody; this record makes for an awesome musical experience. The ten songs may not be much, but every one of them carries a bag of originality and musical prowess. A lot of bands in this genre use myspace to get big, and showcase the 4 best songs on the CD and then we all buy it, only to find the rest sort of suck. Not so on OWD! Every song here has some type of redeeming quality about it. From the short and melodic "Well versed in the ways of the world" to the slow and dreamy "our flag is white", theres not one song that I dislike.

Overall, TP has a sound that's quite refreshing in an overpopulated genre. I'm giving this an easy 5, but be warned, there will be much more to come from this band!

5 out of 5 stars Release of the Year.......2005-09-03

This is a remarkable record -- even more so when you consider the band members' ages. It's somewhere between emo and indie. It reminds me of a post punk Squeeze -- 80's pop bubbling over with melody and charm. It's smart both musically and lyrically.

What I wouldn't give to be 19 and girl crazy again -- and the singer in a rock band. This is pop, but more than just verse-chorus-verse. It's catchy tempo changes, a few syncopated rhythms, and a distinctly fresh sound to which you want to sing.

5 out of 5 stars i love these guys.......2005-08-11

i live in seattle so ive been with them when they were strictly local still. they are great! i would definitely recomend this band if you want a fresh type of music. they aren't like most of the bands out today, they have their own sound. i cant wait to see them at the New Club Impact on the 27th!

The Farrelly brothers, who brought us Dumb and Dumber and There's Something About Mary, have written a humorous tale starring Alec Baldwin, Shawn Hatosy, and George Wendt about a kid whose blue-collar dad ships him off to a prep school to learn how the better half lives. Plenty of classic rock accompanies the kid's travails since the movie has been set in the early 1970s, when The Eagles, Paul McCartney and Wings, and Steely Dan were the obvious soundtrack to one's coming of age. The Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again" leads things off (much as it summed things up for Spike Lee's Summer of Sam). Free's classic rock staple "All Right Now" (the predecessor to Bad Company) is a natural, as is Lee Michael's rough and tumble "Do You Know What I Mean." And while "Stairway to Heaven" doesn't make an appearance, you can still flick your Bic to Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Free Bird." --Rob O'Connor

5 out of 5 stars After 30 YEARS, I get it ALL! Thank you!.......2003-12-31

"Dancin' In the Moonlight" is MY song! I've waited so long to get this one hit wonder song on a good compilation album. In fact, I ordered it because it was on this one! This song has always screamed "happy" and taken me back to a favorite time in my life (one not filled with anyone in particular, but just singular happy moments and dreams of what "might be"). Of course, I know all of the other hits too. This album runs the gamut from my early teens right through my college years. I remember dancing to all of these at many a frat party. Incredible grouping of some fantastic songs! I'm sending this one to my best friend. Won't HE be surprised? Man, this one REALLY takes me back......and back.....and back........shhhhh.....gotta go dance now! (BIG GRIN!)

4 out of 5 stars Roundabout.......2003-08-18

The answer to the question of the song playing in the guy's room when they get busted by Funderdurk is called Roundabout by YES.

5 out of 5 stars The Best.......2002-04-07

This is 1 of the best soundtracks ever. every song on here is a classic. from start to finish it is sheer classicness. There could've been more songs but most CDs could have more songs.

Does any one know the song that was playing on the record player when they all got busted by Mr Funderburk in their dormroom?

5 out of 5 stars Outside of King Harvest, Providence scores big with me.......2001-10-05

Outside Providence was a good movie, but it has an even better soundtrack with such fine songs as Won't get Fooled Again (The Who), Band on the Run (Wings), Roundabout (Yes), Long Train Runnin' (Doobie Brothers) among many others. One of those soundtrakcs, or even just albums that you can listen to over an over again (as long as you skip song 10). Highly reccomendable, especially for people who do like the music.

This three-disc set combines a second-set segment from a June 1974 show in Providence, Rhode Island, with the complete second set of a Boston Garden appearance recorded two nights later. The band was clearly in a playful mood that week, adding new twists to old songs and coming up with a number of dynamite jams out of thin air. Bassist Phil Lesh is particularly frisky and fertile on the Providence material. The collection begins with a distinctive "China Cat Sunflower" taken at an airier, slower groove than usual and bookended by interesting improvisational ideas. There's an exhilarating 15-minute "Spanish Jam" before they eventually encore with "Eyes of the World." The Boston show's second set opens with "Sugar Magnolia" and for the first time ever its "Sunshine Daydream" coda is broken off from its body and reattached at set's end. Also of note is a lovely "To Lay Me Down" and the far-ranging 28-minute jam that occurs after "Weather Report Suite," a ride unlike any other in Dead history. Throughout both shows, Jerry Garcia's guitar leads are as supple and fluid as they've ever been. Though it lacks the cohesiveness of one complete show, this 12th volume marks a true highpoint of the Dick's Picks series. --Marc Greilsamer

4 out of 5 stars Don t let this one get away.......2007-06-26

The Loser from Aug 20 , 1987 is among the finest interpretations of music i ve heard w my ears . Other moments in music are ' around ' and can be found and discussed due to the fine output and availability of music recordings to us , music fans . Beethoven symphonies . Electronic music a la Klaus Schulze , Steve roach and robert rich ( and Bass communion Steve wilson ) . Well .. But so .. what about this live show ( s ) from 1974 in the Dead s early 70 s universe in time .

Going back to music as being well done ( as in that 87 show i mentioned above ) , it is done here with a style and sound only heard by this band and in that time period . For me , personally , the band didnt come around to kicking a*s until about 1993 , then 94 and finally 95 ( That is my objective opinion ) , and many may think other moments were their favorite or more potent . This band leaves quite a bit of ' stuff ' or subject matter ' in any sense to discuss .

The 3 disc DP is fine . The playing quality on the first two discs is very tight & strong . But when you get to the third disc , pay close attention . After the nice Weather report Suite and let it Grow , the band slides down to jam that begs for open mindedness . The Grateful dead in 1974 had the best ( yes they did ) sound system on the planet . The best technology to amplify their sound - called the Wall of sound and its described in detail in a book called Grateful Dead Gear .

If you are able when listening to the 23 minute jam that percedes Let it grow , you can almost climb inside Jerry s mind , and think ' We got an excelent sound system .. let s take it to places we are qualified to prove its greatness ' . The jam flows into a Mind left body jam ( 6 minutes duration ) , then back into a bridge that would take the band into US Blues . After US Blues , a short tuning break and a 3.5 minute Promised land . Then without stopping a GDTRFB . Show closer Sunshine daydream . Encore Ship of fools .

Rest in peace Jerry . Thanks for leaving us with such great stuff

5 out of 5 stars great jams.......2007-04-12

lots of jams on this one
discs one and two feature some classic improv
Garcia really rocks on this one

5 out of 5 stars Simply fantastic!.......2007-02-17

I've got a lot of Dick's Picks, and a lot of Grateful Dead in general, and this one is really my favorite. (I should mention, by the way, that I am a fan of Donna when she is in tune, and this was one of her better nights. Ok, I'll admit it - for me, there are some Dead songs that aren't complete without her, especially "Weather Report Suite," "Scarlet Begonias" and "Lay Me Down.")

The best parts about this particular Pick are the energy, the singing, the recording quality and, above everything else, the profound beauty of Jerry's solos. Quite frankly, there are Jerry moments on this Pick that are as perfect as anything he ever did that I've heard. Some of these solos are so heart wringing and soul-touching that they'll probably be part of whatever flashes through my mind as I leave this world.

The Dead as a whole were really on during this show, and it's one of the shows that I would highly recommend as a newcomer's first taste of what the Dead were really all about.

My personal tragedy is that I never saw them. In college I had "Skeletons from the Closet" and I assumed that that was the G.D. It wasn't until the late 90's, when I rented a "View From the Vault" on a whim that I finally understood, too late, what they really were.

Luckily, we have enough taped music from them to wind it around the backside of the moon and back to earth six or seven times. Dick's Picks 12 is some of the best I've heard yet.

5 out of 5 stars just exactly perfect.......2006-10-07

This features some incredible and wide ranging music. If you like China Cat Sunflower (and who doesn't), you'll never hear another one like this!

But, there's plenty of other reasons to buy this... top to bottom, this ones packed with gems. If you like creative jamming, this ones a must.

5 out of 5 stars The best of the best. .......2005-10-16

I have listened to and own a lot of Dick's Picks and this is the best of all the volumes I've heard.

Disc !: The best "China Cat Sunflower" in my collection, hands down. Then, an incredible jam out of "Truckin'" that keeps going for about 20 minutes and then morphs into a sweet "Wharf Rat" and "Sugar Magnolia." Classic stuff. 5/5

Disc 2: Some of the best Dead songs performed damn-near flawlessly. "Eyes of the World" and "Scarlet Begonias" are a bit short, but they still have a distinct punch to them. "Seastones" may sound grating to some people, but I actually enjoy it and think it's a good transition between the end of one show and the beginning of another. "To Lay Me Down" makes one of its rare appearences and it's just plain LOVELY. The other songs are all good and well-played, but I wouldn't say this is a perfect disc. The fun of 6/28/74 is just about to get started. 4.5/5

Disc 3: And now, the moment you've all been waiting for: a 27-minute track simply titled "Jam." And "Jam" it does! Lots of themes are touched on... "Space," "Mind Left Body," "Dark Star," ect. What really makes this jam worthwhile is the fact that the band is so fluid and moves between the themes with great ease. Then we get perhaps the greatest "U.S. Blues" in Dead history, which isn't really much of a surpirse given what came before. A glorious "Sunshine Daydream" and fairly hard-to-find "Ship of Fools" close the set. 5/5

Conclusion: I think this pick can be summed up in one word: "epic." If you like the Dead at all, this should be in your collection. It's a very good summary of the crazy stuff that could happen in 1974. Sure, '77 and '68 might have been more consistantly excellent... but when they were on in '74, they were on much more intensely than in any other era.

4 out of 5 stars One of Hiroshima's best.......2000-09-22

Providence by Hiroshima is a must have for any Hiroshima fan. Some of the songs with vocals have forgettable lyrics, but no complaints about the quality of the female lead singer's voice. Fans who have seen Hiroshima in concert may recognize one of their touring staples, Turning Point which showcases June Kuramoto's incredible talent on the koto. Kazen is a more traditional koto composition that blends nicely into the amazing Autumn Moon, which could be the soundtrack to a Japanese horror story; it's very ominous and forbidding. Also interesting is the group's treatment of Stevie Wonder's Ribbon in the Sky. Overall, this is a very enjoyable CD. Some amazing songs, some forgettable, but one of their better efforts.

5 out of 5 stars Very Pretty.......2006-10-12

Nice collection of very pretty songs of praise to the Almighty YHWH GOD and our Lord, Jesus Christ. Simple songs, beautifully displayed and sung.

5 out of 5 stars It grows on you.......2005-04-25

I'd like to echo what Mr. Cole wrote 6 years ago: the apparent youth of the singers is a benefit. This CD grows on you. It has staying power, variety, honesty, vigor... and sopranos that excel. Listen to what offsetting effect they have against the young basses on track 2, Chesterfield. Or the seductive tracks 5 and 13.

The choir members are now pushing 50 years old. I would like to thank them for the pleasure and joyous renewal that they give so many years after these performances.

5 out of 5 stars American and English Psalmody.......2003-01-24

The music of American psalmodists such as Billings and Belcher, while it does represent some of the great achievements of the psalmody tradition, is not the whole of this tradition. The fuging tune and related music (anthems etc.) stem originally from English psalmody (the "West Gallery tradition"), the works of men such as William Tans'ur and Aaron Williams. They, their music and the people who sang it in England, as in the US, were very much not of the elite: they were of "the folk", hence their folk music. Pieces by Tans'ur can be found, for those who are interested, in US psalmodies still in print, such as "Harmonia Sacra"

4 out of 5 stars A good introduction to some little-known music.......1999-03-09

I first heard this recording on an old scratchy LP in a college course on American music. Like most people, I was ignorant of the existence of 'fuging tunes', which are an odd and uniquely American blend of baroque counterpoint and homespun harmonies. This extended polyphony is often tacked onto the end of the homophonic chorales or hymns which constitute the standard fare of modern American Protestant church services (and are often boring and bland by comparison, in my opinion). What was in Europe a past-time for the elite became music for the masses in the New World: These tunes were sung not by choirs but by congregations, and proliferated in folk tunebooks such as the 'Southern Harmony', which still survives today.

The performance by the Oregon State group is youthful and exuberant... Overall intonation and clarity are excellent, while vocal technique is somewhat unrefined (this is actually appropriate, given the origins of this music). If you've never experienced early American vocal music, you will be surprised and pleased with this recording.

Original Soundtrack from Director Alain Resnais' 1977 Drama About a Bitter, Alcoholic Author (Played by the Late Sir John Gielgud). The Movie also Starred Ellen Burstyn and Earned Composer Miklos Rozsa the French Academy of Cinema Award for Best Music, One of Seven Cesars Accorded to the Film.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A late masterpiece by an undisputed master.......2006-11-09

"Providence" ranks among Rozsa's greatest scores. That melancholy waltz-theme of his is about as good as movie music ever gets. This score provides a reason for living.

    5 out of 5 stars EXTRAORDINARILY BEAUTIFUL.......2001-05-07

"Providence" is one of those movies which you'll either love or hate. I don't believe there can be any in-between. It is an elegantly told story of an old, dying writer (John Geilgud) who invites his family for a weekend visit of blame and recriminations. Some of the movie is memory and some present-time and none of it is easily or fully explained. The viewer must work as hard as while reading a difficult, but ultimately very rewarding, novel like one of Faulkner's. The rest of the cast, wonderfully directed by Alain Resnais ("Hiroshima, Mon Amour") includes Dirk Bogarde & Ellen Burstyn.

However, I don't think there is anyone who will not be moved by the extraordinarily beautiful score by Miklos Rozsa. This is touching, beautiful, lush, fully accessible music. You'll love it. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
