5 out of 5 stars Alice Cooper's Warner Bros debut still sounds SUPERB in 2007.......2007-07-28

Alice Cooper's third album Love It To Death was released in February of 1971.
By 1971, The Alice Cooper band was notorious for their shock rock performances and their notoriety of being on Frank Zappa's Straight Records label. Then, when Zappa sold Straight to Warner Bros, the label was unsure if Alice Cooper would last.
With the pressure of being dropped, the band (which comprised of lead singer Alice Cooper (a/k/a Vincent Furnier), guitarists Michael Bruce and Glen Buxton, bass player Dennis Dunaway and drummer Neal Smith) got together with up and coming producer Bob Ezrin to record their third, and possibly final, album. Would the album make Alice Cooper a legend or would it lead the band into the netherworld, read on and find out.
We open the album with the great rocker "Caught In A Dream" which was a great piece. Next is the song that made the man and band called Alice, a force to be reckoned with called "I'm Eighteen". This classic rocker is a song about hitting that adult age which we aren't kids yet full adults yet and still resonates today. Next is another great rocker "Long Way To Go" which reminds me of early Rolling Stones and Who tracks. We close the first half of the album with the epic "Black JuJu" which is a superb piece though some will say this is all jibberish. The chants and the eeriness of this one predicts a career that would get strange but entertaining at the same time.
The album's second half kicks off with the rocker "Is It My Body" which is another classic rocker that is well remembered from the album. Next is another great tune "Hallowed Be My Name". This may be seen as filler but is a great track nevertheless. "Second Coming" is next and is the start of the album closing trilogy. Whilst "Second Coming" is great, the following track called "The Ballad Of Dwight Fry" is my favorite on the album. This manic portrait of claustrophobia that Alice evokes in this song is enough to make the skin crawl and one want to escape from reality doldrums. We close the album with a re-make of the classic "Sun Arise" which is given the Alice Cooper spin on it.
The album gave Alice Cooper its first US Top 40 album peaking at #35 and went Gold upon its release (eventually Platinum). The old cliche was if Alice Cooper made it then the 1960s peace and love ethics were dead. that saying proved true.
RECOMMENDED!

3 out of 5 stars Not QUITE classic Coop, but worth a buy.......2007-04-13

Yeah, this is good, and better than the two preceding albums (Pretties for You and Easy Action), but it's not at the level of Killer or Billion Dollar Babies at all. I mean, it's likeable enough, and contains some of their best songs. I'm 18 is my favorite Coop song ever, thanks to the harmonica, guitar, and Coop's insightful but funny lyrics. Caught in a Dream and Long Way to Go are also great, and Hallowed be My Name is good. All of these make this a good purchase for even casual Coop fans such as myself (interestingly, I've heard all of ACG's albums yet consider myself a "casual fan"). But some of this is very, VERY bad. Like Black Juju. It goes on for nine freaking minutes! Okay, I like jamming when in the right hands, and the group sure had the chops to pull it off. But it's just BORING. That's not their strong suit - three minute muscular, riffy, catchy rockers with funny lyrics like, well... I'm 18. And they pull another with Ballad of Dwight Fry, thankfully shorter but still not very good. Second Coming and the concert favorite Is It My Body are just mediocre. Not bad, mind you, but mediocre. They exist merely to exist, and I don't get how Body made it on ACG's Greatest Hits in the place of, say, Caught in a Dream or Long Way to Go.
So this is an average album, with quite a few average songs, but it's not at all bad and has a few tremendous songs other than I'm Eighteen (as well as I'm Eighteen itself, of course). Don't start your Coop collection here - go with either Greatest Hits or Killer. But be sure to pick it up sometime, because Caught in a Dream and Long Way to Go are both very underrated.

5 out of 5 stars Love it to Death Man.......2007-01-02

I remember hearing "Black Juju " and being blown completely away with the atmosophere it created. Alice Cooper has always been for me a larger than life experience. This cd was their turn around in turns of sound. Ezrin made these bad dudes even worse. Every song is a masterpiece and every song, for me,is a picture of my youth painted in the tapestry of the greatest shock rock act to date : Alice Cooper!!!

5 out of 5 stars The Big Break For Alice And The Boys.......2006-12-07

"I'm 18 And I Like It"! With those immortal words that resonated with every 18 year old from 1971 to 2006 the Alice Cooper band became stars. "Love It To Death" was the first album for the band on a major label, and although it has it's flaws the good stuff on this album ranks with the all time best from Alice and the boys. This was also the first album with Bob Ezrin at the production helm. He would prove to be the catalyst for much of Cooper's output for years to come. The album contained two huge singles "18" and "Is It My Body" that still receive tons of classic rock airplay to this day. But the real meat of this album is the two longer pieces. "Black Juju" clocks in at more than 9 minutes and is the blueprint for the many horror epics that would be the Alice's trademark to this day. The band plays it up on this one too, with interesting instrumental passages that set the mood for the dark lyrics. The other truly great track on the album is "The Ballad Of Dwight Fry". This is prime fillet Alice and is still the theatrical centerpiece to his live shows today. In "Fry" Alice firsts discovers his alter ego character which he would refer to in the 3rd person in interview from this point forward. The sight of Alice on stage in a straightjacket singing "I gotta get out of here" still can send shivers up the spine. Two other interesting songs appear on the album both dealing with Christianity. "Hallowed Be Thy Name" (written by Smith) and "Second Coming" (written by Cooper) explore interesting aspects of the subject. The Alice Cooper band was still very much a group project at this time with Bruce, Smith and Dunaway writing as much of the material as Alice. The only two songs that don't do much for me are the opener and closer "Caught In A Dream" and "Sun Arise". The Cooper Band's stage show would really start to develop on this tour as well, with theatrics becoming almost as important to the music. "Love It To Death" is the album that vaulted the band into superstardom and it is worthy of that achievement.

5 out of 5 stars Shock Rock Perfection.......2006-09-15

Is there a better twisted hard rock album in existence? I doubt it. In addition to the instantly memorable melodies performed by the classic Alice Cooper line-up, we get Alice's uniquely weird lyrics to go with them. The songs humorously address such topics as teenage confusion/angst in the Top Forty hit "I'm Eighteen"; the occult in "Black Juju"; Christianity in "Hallowed By My Name" and "Second Coming"; and teen restlessness in the opening track "Caught In A Dream" and "Long Way To Go". This disc had way too much influence on me as a teen. Mental illness ("Ballad of Dwight Fry") seemed so fantastically exotic when Alice was singing about it. Alas, though I'm not as nutty as poor Dwight, I'm not quite right in the head either these days. Long rock songs tend to bore me but "Ballad" and "Black Juju" are perfectly justified in their length. There's not a wasted note in either song. This was the first Alice Cooper album produced by Bob Ezrin. Under his guidance the band really flowered. He would go on to produce the remaining classic Alice Cooper albums "Killer" through "Billion Dollar Babies". Check these out as well- they're almost as good as "Death".

    Amazon.com essential recording

Disney's Snow White, the world's first animated musical feature (1937), is still a standard in the industry. Though 1930s recording technology was primitive by today's standards, the Disney music studios have always used the available technology to its fullest, and this recording still stands up. The mature but hauntingly childlike Adriana Caselotti as Snow White is a unique vocal presence, and the songs include "Whistle While You Work," "Heigh-Ho," and "Some Day My Prince Will Come." The score is nearly as great an accomplishment as the film itself. --John Sanchez

5 out of 5 stars The Churchill's are very talented persons........2007-02-13

When I was 6, I already had a very good sense of what is a fine music score. I'm 73 now and still loving that music.

    5 out of 5 stars One Song.......2006-02-19

I bought this album almost especially for the piece of music entitled "Special Sort Of Death." It does sound creepy but that's what I loved about it. From I saw the film I was like I have to have that.

Anyway another reason for me purchasing this album was the main titles for the film I love the ochestration. My favourite song on this album would have to be One Song followed by with A Smile and a Song.

And number 5 (a piece of music) I can't remember what it's called but it is creepy too the part that has snow white running through the woods.

Someday my prince will come is nice too. Adriana's voice is a little high and annoying sometimes though. But it's still nice to listen to. I listen to this album alot it's very nice and I like to listen to the version of One Song that is played at the end of the movie.

4 out of 5 stars good soundtrack for halloween.......2005-07-14

first of all, i have seen the movie and the hag scares me very much. about the music,it's not good music for children because the orchestral moving creates dark suites. the other part of makin' pies is no exception. i listened to special sort of death on a site called mp3.com and the beginning is very disturbing almost, because it's when the queen appears as the old witch and she plots to destroy snow white
Queen:(laughing)it's not for you, it's for snow white
    anyways, bye-bye

    5 out of 5 stars REMasterpiece!.......2003-01-21

This soundtrack is a perfect compliment to the film, and It's gloriously remastered to make you feel you are still watching and not just listening to the music from the movie itself.

In the liner notes I read the original soundtrack only consisted of five songs, the five songs we hear sung in the film. "One song/I'm Wishing", "Hi Ho", "The Yodeling Song", "Some day my prince will come", and "Whistle while you work". Over the years, the instrumental musical score was thrown in to create a wonderful masterpiece of a soundtrack.

I highly recommend purchasing this. If you like the music from the movie, you will love this. After hearing this for the first time(I've now heard it at least 100, thanks to my 2 yr. old), the movie is brought out to be more of a musical adventure as well as a wonderful story to be told.
This is my son's favorite c.d., and he has so much fun dancing and singing along.

    5 out of 5 stars A Magical, Delightful Soundtrack.......2002-10-07

This was the first of the newly remastered and expanded "Disney classic soundtracks" that I purchased for my collection, and it's still my favorite. How wonderful to have, not only the vocals from the old vinyl version ("I'm Wishing/One Song," "With a Smile and a Song," "Heigh-Ho," "Bluddle-Uddle-Um-Dum," "The Dwarfs' Yodel Song" (and if you don't want to get up and dance to it, there's something wrong with you!), and "Some Day My Prince Will Come"), but the background instrumentals from the track, never before available to the at-home audience. The "Queen Theme," the chilling "Far Into the Forest," and "I've Been Tricked" particularly bring scenes from the movie springing to mind. There are also two songtracks that were cut from the film print. If you're a Disney-lover, your collection must positively include this CD.

Volume 2 (comprised of 2 CDs) is another first rate compilation of the series' original music and not to be missed by U.N.C.L.E. fans. The liner notes are wonderful and add a lot to ones appreciation of the music.

My only problem is that THE CDs ARE COPY PROTECTED! Considerable work is needed to get the music onto your iPod, if you really want the music in your mp3 collection. This is a major hassle and a surprise, since the first set in the series was not copy protected.

5 out of 5 stars The best of the three Double CDs ORIGINAL soundtrack release.......2005-07-12

Many of us have always thought The Man From UNCLE had the best music for a TV series ever, and this three double CD release confirms this. Wow! I'd be just happy with one CD, but having SIX (three double CDs packages) is absolutely out of this world, I mean, a lifetime wait come true.

Indeed, this is an unbelievable collection of three double CDs packages with the complete series soundtrack, and I mean the complete music, not a tune is missing.

And this is the ORIGINAL Man From Uncle music. Let me stress the point: this is the four years ORIGINAL soundtrack with the original recordings as they were heard throughout the series, not a no-name orchestra doing personal versions of the stuff. The audio transfer is very, very good, the music from late episodes is even in stereo.

Each individual CD carries over 70 minutes of music. All in all there you have the four TV seasons main titles and all, absolutely all of TMFU unforgetable music.

This is not a chronological release, meaning, all CDs have a mix of music from all four TV seasons. Volume 1 is heavier on early TV seasons stuff, fans of Jerry Goldsmith will love it. Those of us who prefer what Gerald Fried and later Richard Shores did with TMFU music, then volume 2 is mandatory. If you are a fan, you can't miss any of these six CDs. However if buying all three double packages is too much for you, you must go with Volume 2, no questions asked. Volume three is the weakest of them as it brings "suites" and a whole CD with "The Girl From Uncle" soundtrack, but you have a bonus "Open Channel D" beeper.

Each package is gorgeous, each with a glossy color booklet with extensive liner notes with details on how each tune was written to a specific TV series episode and how it was used onwards. You have bios on the composers, on how the recordings were made, even an overview on how many instruments were available in each of the years the music was recorded.

So, throw away your Hugo Montenegro Man From Uncle CD, this is the REAL thing.

The selections from the Ring trilogy, Friends in need and Fallen Angel were excellent, however, some of the special request such as joxer the mighty, seemed a little bit rushed. Wasn't that song on Volume 2 already? Where was M'Lila's song from Destiny, or the music played During the first Kiss in "The Quest"
The cd has its good points, personally "It's Over" from "THAB" with its haunting melodies portraying the consequences of war.

I am so happy that the last and final cd has come out, now my collection is complete. I am very sad for the show ending, but I am glad to still collect things.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Collection.......2001-12-25

Well, I have them all by now, but this last one is a great collection, with the added bonus of the music from A Friend In Need.
Just another fine addition to my Xena collection!

    5 out of 5 stars Exceptional.......2001-11-30

I am a fanatic and devoted Xenite.I have a huge problem:i can't stop listening to that cd,since the first time i listened to it,which means 1 month! That cd is really exceptional and i think that every true and genuine Xenite should buy it!It's really good!I was moved when i heard the Fallen Angel part.I was passioned when i heard the Ring Trilogy!I was astonishing when i heard the bonus cues that were included, especially the cue from The Quill Is Mightier(fishin part),oh,i was completely satisfied!
Though, there is a complain:i can't understand, why after 6 cd's,the producers don't do a cd including cues like:M'laila's song, the cues from the Bacchaen festival, music from Deja Vou All Over Again, where in the end,Gabrielle says to Xena those wonderful words,or even the scene of the kiss in The Quest! That,i can't understand it!
Last, i believe that whoever likes LoDuca's music style, should buy this cd.
Pay attention to the 22 cue:Pas De Deux Femmes. It is one of a something and whoever remembers what's the scene of this song, will agree with me!Mmmm!

4 out of 5 stars A MIX OF THE BEST, THE WORST AND THE MISSING.......2001-11-29

To all truly Xena fans this CD is a must-have but have some lacks... Fun (comedy episodes music) scores destroy the the great combination of FALLEN ANGEL, THE RHEINGOLD TRILOGY AND I FRIEND IN NEED. In the first selections LoDuca creates spectacular high level music good enough to be played in a Symphony orchestra concert. The others selections have easy-to-fill-space western cowboy music instead of put M'Lilas song of DESTINY, Amazon's climbing trees of ADVENTURES IN THE SIN TRADE and NAJARA vs XENA music that would be gladly accepted by us. I doubt the company will launch a next CD but if they'll do this track and another valuable more must be there and the adittion of some famous characters quotes like "I have many skills" from Xena.

    5 out of 5 stars Champagne Music!.......2006-07-09

Thank goodness that these well filled CDs of selections from three of Offenbach's most entertaining and tuneful operettas are available. Exactly the thing to provide some hearty nourishment for Winter nights. Ideal also for a Summer barbecue. In both cases, a glass of champagne, or at least some other bubbly beverage, would be good to have at hand - everything here no doubt will call for a toast or several.

It is so nice to be able to hear in these translations the witty words, sung with welcome clarity and meaning by these admirable artists. As I recall, there were no microphones in sight, and perhaps not even used, when this production of Orpheus In The Underworld was brought to Australia, with a few cast changes but the same sparkle as shown here. Crisp diction and lively, often lovely, singing - a great recipe for enjoyable listening indeed.

The recording sounds a bit shrill here and there, but what a churlish quibble; to Hades with such curmudgeonly qualifications! This is music to raise the spirits, and not just those from Hades.

5 out of 5 stars One of my Favorite CDs.......2004-02-19

In this wonderful collection of Shakespeare settings, Mr. Rolfe-Johnson creates a magical atmosphere using his unbelievable musicality and gorgeous, gorgeous voice! The songs themselves range from the sweet and charming "No more Dams!" to the heavenly interpretation of "She Never Told Her Love", but for me the high point of the whole CD is his incredible performance of the early version of Vaughan Willams' "Orpheus with his Lute"...this song alone is worth the price of the album! Mr. Rolfe Johnson is truly one of the worlds most exquisite tenors! A must have for every fan of English Song!

    5 out of 5 stars Melodious Shakespeare.......2001-01-24

This CD consists of a collection of settings of Shakespearian lines by composers ranging from the 18th to the mid-20th centuries. It is an ideal vehicle for finding a new way to enjoy these writings of Shakespeare and also experience the work of a number of British composers, some well-known and some not so well-known

    5 out of 5 stars An Artist's Artist.......2006-03-18

Danielle Woerner has long been prized on the classical music scene for the exquisite intelligence of her singing and the distinctive beauty of her voice. Her range is and has been astonishing--from opera to art song--and in this recording one can her that sound and intimate sensibility which has earned her such a splendid name. Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Luscious and deeply moving.......2000-12-29

Danielle Woerner's voice is so rich and mellow, you can get lost in it. I was not familiar with this repertoire, and found Luening's setting of Emily Dickinson to be marvelous--sometimes serious, sometimes playful, always true to the deep emotions. I also liked the setting of William Blake's "Ah, Sun-flower", which Luening composed especially for this singer. I found myself listening over and over to the poems of Gail Godwin as set by her partner and collaborator, Robert Starer. The compositions are moving and complex, and Woerner makes excellent musical choices for presenting them in a way that the audience can truly feel. Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Skip this Savitri.......2005-09-24

Holst was a great devotee of Hind mythology, and his chamber opera Savitri was the best thing he did in that vein. I've loved it for forty years, and the classic performance under Imogen Holst, the composer's daughter, is out on London/Decca with the amazing Janet Baker and Robert Tear. compared to it, this performance is clumsy and awkwardly sung by the female lead.

    5 out of 5 stars Unexpected treasure.......2001-04-21

Like most people, I only knew Holst from 'The Planets'. Wanting to expand my horizons, I bought this disc on a whim. What a suprise! Savitri, a half-hour chamber opera, is exotic, highly original and hauntingly beautiful. The performance is superb. All fans of late-romantic exotica should give it a try
