Customer Reviews:
Sinatra at his RAREST and JAZZIEST best!.......2007-01-29
"Perfectly Frank" (Bravura 103) is an incredible CD of Frank Sinatra's small jazz combo sides from his early '50's Radio Show, ""To Be Perfectly Frank." Nearly all songs are with just trios, quartets, quintets, or solo piano. It contains a whopping 31 tracks of wonderful small group jazz with Sinatra singing on every track. Many of these songs he NEVER recorded commercially. He was at the HEIGHT of his career & vocal talents at this point in his life. The sound quality is really quite good, considering this was just a radio show. ALL songs are pure music, with no chatting or applause throughout the songs (as it was recorded in a small studio, with just Sinatra and the band). All you get is the wonderful music.
If you are lucky, and can find this wonderful CD, you must also find "After Hours" on the Bravura label. It contains 33 more tracks from this same radio show. Every song is different on each CD, so there's no overlap, and they have the same sound quality.
Both are out-of-print, and quite difficult to find. That's unfortunate, because you will not hear a better representation of Sinatra's JAZZY vocal abilities elsewhere.

Real Rock, no hype!.......2002-10-27
This album is badd!! Anyone who is a cult fanatic or even a mild admirer of this influential rock, punk band will be interested. The best thing I found about this double disc set is that a large proportion of the set list includes pre-electric tunes. There is a large degree of Love songs on this set and what's even better is that you get to hear how these tracks have "mutated" and changed since the early 80's. There are parts where you can obviously tell that Ian's voice is going out, but hey, if you sing like this on a 200 date tour you're voice is going to sound a little ragged also! I also need to mention that on the cd sleeve, there is a statement that there were no overdubs or studio cleanups involved in the production of this album! What you hear is what was there! For anyone who questions the validity of soul, feeling and no hype attitude of the Cult, this 2 disc set will confirm all that these guys have been saying and doing all along, Rock is alive and the cult is proof! 101

Kindred spirits from different countries, Canada's Rick Danko, Norway's Jonas Fjeld, and America's Eric Andersen connect across all sorts of borders on these 1991 recordings. The reedy-voiced Andersen shares Scandinavian roots with Fjeld (introduced as "a Norwegian national treasure") and New York and Bob Dylan connections with former Band member Danko, and all three steep their material in the American mythos. This two-disc set pairs a reissue of the troubadour trio's studio debut (an award winner in Norway) with the first issue of a live recording from a 1991 Norwegian festival. On the studio sessions, the harmonies are richer than some of the song craft, with Danko's vocals at their soulful best on "Driftin' Away" and Andersen's "Blue River." The live performance elicits an enthusiastic reception from the festival fans, with each of the three artists showcased solo before joining forces. Listening to Andersen's revival of "Hey Babe, Have You Been Cheatin'" conjures 1960s-era Greenwich Village, where he was one of the first to survive the "new Dylan" tag. This package serves as a memorial to Danko, who died in 1999. --Don McLeese
Customer Reviews:
A Great Trio - CSN could learn a lesson here.......2002-07-24
Taking the last spot in the lineup, nonetheless, Eric Anderson is the architect and musical center for what was one of the truly great trios in modern song in the 90's. This team came about as a result of Eric's move to Norway. He has released several stellar solo recordings based in Norway that are well worth seeking out, and in the course of this endeavour, he began working with Jonas Fjeld. I'm not sure how Rick Danko and the two of them hooked up, but their debut concert in Norway is presented here as a bonus secxond disc to a marvellous recapitulation of their studio work.
This trio is the perfect antedote to the birdchirpy, often off key (especially in concert) harmonics of CSN. What you have are 3 men who can find the notes, expand upon them, provoke interesting twists on the harmonies, and introduce their personal idiosyncrasies in a magnificent tapestry. Pull Crosby out of the other trio, and you have a sheer mess.
The studio songs are extremely well executed, beautifully orchestrated. In concert, Danko flubs a bit of "It makes no difference" but flubs with enormous passion. It is an arresting example of how getting it wrong gets it totally right. Fjeld is the surprise in both the studio and in concert. He is both American raconteur and Scandanavian mystic. His tones are all Norse inflected, and his baritone delivery has a worn in quality that makes him seem part of your interior's history. That brings us to Anderson, perhaps the most underappreciated writer ever to have emerged from the same scene that spit out Dylan and Baez and Paxton and loads of other very essential writers. He writes from the heart, and his songs can leave you devastated, exhilarated, reflective, and so much more. He is a brilliant musician. Well, they all are, and the backup bands in both contexts are superlative.
Go out on a limb, here, if you are unfamiliar with these men. This was a great band that you should listen to, and with Danko's unfortunate passing, a final testament to one of Canada's greatest musicians, one of popular song's greatest interpreters.
Nice old-fashioned roots music.......2002-06-25
An expanded, 2-CD reissue of an unusual and unlikely collaboration between former Band member Rick Danko, Scandinavian roots rocker Jonas Fjeld and Greenwich Village singer-songwriter Eric Andersen. This is a pleasantly diverse outing, ranging from quieter, folkie numbers to electric jam-band tunes. The new version also includes a second disc of live concert recordings that may include a few pleasant surprises. Accomplished, confident rootsy material by an interesting trio of hippie-era old-timers.

true sounds of liberty.......2002-10-16
This album is really great. The boys really sound good and some great vocals by Jack Grisham.... get this cd while you can sounds as good as anything thats came out in years. clean crisp sound to boot.
The best live album ever!.......2001-01-25
This is, by far, the best live album ever recorded. TSOL, in my opinion, are the best of all the old school punk bands. There is not a bad song on this record. From beginning to end it is simply amazing. Unlike other live recordings, you can still feel the energy you get while being at a punk show. Some of the best tracks are Superficial Love, I'm Tired, Thoughts Of Yesterday, and Funeral March. I love this cd, buy it!
Old school. you could learn alot........1999-01-19
T.s.o.l was a great band to go see live and this album proves it. When your in a bad mood or feeling a bit angry put on "Superficial Love", I guarantee it will pick you up.

the good craft of the acoustic axe.......2001-04-08
I rate this recording with 4.5 stars. This is one of the few records I own that endures uninterrupted playing for four years in a row and still goes on strong. I believe this is the culmination from the two previous Guitar Craft recordings: Live and Show of Hands. This performance arm of Guitar Craft display an uncanny sense of musicianship rarely withness on recording or stage with daring compositions, specially from Nigel Gavin, and distinguished playing by all musicians. The attack on the guitars is sharp and transparent. Notes and melodies never drift out of focus nor they lie into drolling tunes (well almost!!..). Another Guitar Craft recording is well in need. It has been ten years now with out any new stuff and fans like myself are hurting.
Grate Guitar Players Having Fun!!!!!.......1999-06-26
Fripp does have grate guitar-player friends... Hear them play with the Monster(RF)
The best acoustic guitar album I've heard yet.......1998-08-10
This is a live recording of 10 highly accomplished guitarists - all advanced participants in Robert Fripp's Guitar Craft seminars. The playing here is highly precise, with an emphasis on tight, complex teamwork, to wonderful musical effect. Especially gratifying is Nigel Gavin's (now of Gitbox Rebellion) composition on the opening track, which leads off with what sounds to me like a bit of a microtonal tribute to Harry Partch. I'm also very fond of the hidden 'non performance', and the additional 'hidden' track.
If you're sick to death of the tired guitar repertoire they play on classical radio stations, this is a tremendous genre-free antidote

Tricky........2002-04-22
Allow me to quote from the liner notes:
"Despite constant jockeying for the domineering musical position by each member of the band, resulting as it did, in mass overplaying of the most heinous, self centered manner, and not withstanding the excoriating cancerous vocal style I employed (reviewers note: THAT'S WHAT HE SOUNDS LIKE-LIKE HE HAS A CHOICE) devoid of subtlety, nuance and all the other qualities of finesse I deem more important today, GP and the Rumour still manage somehow to coalesce into a full blooded whole some nights of the year that defied gravity, overshadowing shortcomings, and at times made us sound like the most vital rock 'n roll band on the planet."
That about summarizes my opinion of this album - an album as full of bombast as the excerpt above.
It is a loud rock album if you just sort of let it play, but if you listen closely it is something you warm up to, as if, as stated in the quote above, the band sometimes really gels. On this album they seem really in a groove.
Sounding a little like a drunk Elvis Costello, GP and friends really rip through a bunch of songs that all sort of sound the same, and they all sort of sound great.
Oh, and this CD contains, like, the 52nd different version of "Mercury Poisoning." Not a bad thing, really.
Live Is Just Fine!.......2001-03-08
This album is uniformly excellent, a surprisingly consistent effort, especially since it was cobbled together from live appearances spanning 14 years. Listening to it, you could be convinced it was from a single tour, no small compliment. All the songs sound great, especially the two tracks from his later, more tepid albums. As a fan, it's a treat to get some great live albums since GPs studio efforts have been relatively disappointing since THE MONA LISA'S SISTER, indeed, he may be the only artist who makes live albums that are better than his studio efforts. The fact that his later songs sound better live implies that GPs problem of late has been his devotion to studio perfection. Parker is a basic rock n roller, the kind of straight ahead artist whose sound can be easily be over produced, and this would seem to be what has been going on. Maybe he should hire Nick Lowe to `bash out' his next album.

Holy Grail type sh-t.......2006-01-08
Here's a band that far outshone most of their contempories but somehow managed to slip through the cracks and become more known as a footnote of the bands that came after than the rock legends they truly were.
Ever wonder where David Grubbs spent his time after Squirrelbait and before Gastr Del Sol? Ever wonder what Bundy Brown did before Tortoise? Ever wonder what John McEntire did before he was in Tortoise and the Sea & Cake and started producing Stereolab Records? Did you ever wonder what band featured members who would go on to play in bands like Slint, Evergreen, King Kong, The For Carnation and more? Well, if you did, the answer is a resounding BASTRO!
This live release was supposed to coincide with the two proper Bastro lps finally released together on a single cd, but there seems to be some weird legal hang up, presumably with Bastro's old label Homestead, but for now we have this glorious live record, from one of the most amazing bands of the late eighties / early nineties.
If you're already a fan, this record is Holy Grail type sh-t, all songs that were never recorded, caaptured live right before the band broke up. Some of these songs morphed into Gastr Del Sol songs, but a whole new record of never-before-heard Bastro songs should have your jaw around your ankles. And for those of you new to the whole Bastro experience, these songs will definitely whet your appetite for more.
Bastro are really hard to descibe, which could be why maybe they ended up going over a lot of people's heads. They incorporated lots of elements of other post hardcore / college rock bands but in perfectly obtuse, totally unlikely ways. You can hear bits and pieces of Jesus Lizard, Big Black, Rapeman, Scratch Acid, Drive Like Jehu and Don Caballero. They started out as a sort-of-industrial-noise rock band a la Big Black, turned into a pumelling noise rock combo, and eventually morphed into a dense, complex avant-math-rock outfit, which is where this live recording catches them, live in 1991, in Chicago and Germany. Super serpentine guitar lines, extended convoluted song structures, impossibly mathy drumming all in a dense tangle of fragmented pop, mathy post rock and obtuse musical chaos. So incredible. As much as I love the bands that came after, Bastro still hold a special place in our heart, their music somehow transcending the music of almost all of their contemporaries, melodic, heavy, bizarre, beautiful. I'm dying for the reissue of the albums proper, but for now I'll just listen to Antlers, over and over and over and over and over.....

Album Description
"High proof." -- Soundcheck
This is what happens when fun becomes serious. Lounge Lizards, formed in the late seventies in New York's downtown scene around cult figure and actor John Lurie, call their mixture of jazz and avant-garde rock "Fake Jazz." In 1991, the group packed Berlin's Quartier Latin for several nights, and the memorable concerts were not only filmed, but also preserved for posterity on two CDs. Features members of Slow Poke and Medeski, Martin & Wood.
Customer Reviews:
If you're gonna buy ONE of their live CDs..........2000-10-25
This disc is more rich and varied than BIG HEART and has no weak cuts on it, unlike the OTHER Berlin live disc, which wastes a ton of time on a total throwaway, "Mr. Stinky's Blues." But be warned -- as I say in my review of the other Berlin disc -- the colors and numbers of these discs change occasionally. Sometimes 2 is 1, 1 is 2, and either can appear in red or black. I dunno why. Anyhow, this is live stuff from the period between VOICE OF CHUNK and QUEEN OF ALL EARS. "Tibet" is actually a VOICE OF CHUNK number under a different name, but I forget which. "A Paper Bag and the Sun," maybe.
Great Live Performance from the Lounge Lizards.......2000-08-26
Outstanding performance from the Lizards, with a bit more emphasis on percussion than you might be used to hearing from them. The tracks are fairly lengthy, giving each of the musicians a chance to "breathe" and come into the form a little more than they do on the studio albums. In the live albums, Lurie seems happy to stray from the sheet music, too -- so where the studio albums (particularly Queen of All Ears) are defined by their intricate structure, the structure of this life performance is a more difficult to spot, but shows no less skill or vibrance.
The most vivid track on the album is "Big Heart" -- Lurie and company turn this great song into an 11-minute jam that will have you up and jumping around like they do in the video. The review below by Keith Hunt is a little astonishing. He's apparently disappointed because this "jazz" doesn't have Rosemary Clooney. Here's fair warning: do not buy this album if you're looking for Rosemary Clooney or Tommy Dorsey. This is modern jazz, not swing -- but, it's not obtuse and inaccessible like, say Don Cherry or even Ornette Coleman. To the contrary, Lurie employs some odd tonalities that I don't completely understand, but heck, you can still dance to it.
I wouldn't recommend this as an introduction to the Lizards. Try Queen of All Ears or Voice of Chunk instead. But, once you're in their groove, check this one out.
As far as the recording of the live concert goes, let me just say that it sounds great, though the track divisions are somewhat arbitary (as if the people who made the divisions weren't really familiar with Lurie's music).
Don your beret, this is beatnick jazz..........2000-08-08
I guess that you, dear listener, must consider the source when you seek the opinions of other listeners. I may not be the appropriate source to review this CD, but I'll give it my best shot.
While I admit to enjoying jazz music, I must add the condition that the jazz is NOT strictly instrumental and must have some form of vocal quality about it. "Berlin 1991 Part I" is completely INSTRUMENTAL jazz, so don't expect BB King or Rosemary Clooney to be crooning in the background. Aside from that, it seems to be some arty form of jazz; the kind that only beatnicks and John Steinbeck enthusiasts would find entertaining. I could only picture a room full of black beret wearing new wave jazz cats snapping their fingers and muttering "Go man, Go...." to the music that they seem to be enjoying. Between you and me, dear listener, berets just ain't my style.
Track one began and I thought that the live recording included the sounds of the band warming up and tuning their instruments, but soon figured out that they were really playing a song on track one. It was something akin to that which would be heard in the mountain remoteness of Tibet, hence the name.... "Tibet."
The next tracks included several renditions of instrumental jazz and the large crowd caught on the recording seemed to enjoy it, since the applause was so loud. I guess they had been playing to a Siberian prison camp that hadn't heard any form of music in twenty years. That crowd would applaud when they heard someone banging spoons on the bottom of a frying pan.
I played the CD once and haven't plans to pull it out at any time in the future, but granted there is that warning that this review is composed by someone who prefers to hear someone singing with the help of a band. I'm sure that somebody out there enjoys this sort of stuff. I'll probably walk down the street and hand the CD to anyone wearing a groovy, neato, cool, black beret. They'd probably enjoy it more than I did. From this perspective, I have to give the recording a low score, but take it for what it is worth.
