5 out of 5 stars Painful but poigniant.......1999-08-30

This is where it ended for perhaps the best metal band (although it is an insult to limit the Wildhearts by that tag) since Metallica. During its recording the band was suffering the effects of the bass player's growing heroin addiction- the screamed lyrics of 'Junkenstein' could only have come from first-hand experience- the band broke up a week before this was released. Some have found the harsh production too much to bear- in places it is more extreme than a grindcore album- but the winning songwriting still shines through: after a few listens, the beauty of 'Soundog Babylon' is obvious, and the schizophrenic genius of 'Urge' still amazes. The final track 'Thunderf*ck' is arguably their finest moment- a flawlessly executed trip-hop experiment that segues into a violent blast that sounds like the world is ending- which it did for this fine and criminally underrated band.

Step 1) Buy album. Jaw drop to floor and sobbing ensures after thinking that favourite pop rock band have released something so dirty and distorted. Throw into cd collection angrily.

Step 2) Upon grudgingly giving the album another chance discover that Junkenstein and Why You Lie are great Nine Inch Nails-esque screamers. Lob back into cd collection ashemedly.

Step 3) Come to the conclusion that Nurse Maximum is one of the best songs they've ever ever written! Place cautiously into cd collection.

Step 4) Start yelling Sounddog Babylon! at the top of your voice in the middle of the night, much to the annoyance of the street.

Step 5) Simply cannot get the groove to Anthem out of your head. BOOM boom boow boom boom bow boom boom bow.....BOOM

Step 6) Grab innocent bystanders, thrust the album into their hands and scream at them to love it until your taken away....

This album is a huge dirty distorted scream of rage with Ginger's trademark melodies buried in the mix. It's essentially the Wildhearts doing their best Big Black impersionation, and christ it's good. Don't be a closed minded fool...appriciate this slab of industrial/metal/pop and be an enlightened grasshopper!

That title above is what this album sounds like.
This album is equally loved and hated, and thats just by me !!!
It really is a work of art.Its a total joy and a total ear shattering nightmare all at the same time, although i have to say, this album wouldnt be half as good without Anthem. This song has built in pyro that would put KISS to shame,EASILY !!!
The loudest 'BOOM'!! youve ever heard before the magnificent chorus,"IM IN LOVE WITH THE ROCK N ROLL WORLD".
Lyrically this is probably Gingers most, well, diverse. The lyrics are really interesting here but you wouldnt know if they wasnt printed on the cover...!!!I heard this album was noisy but Holy Moses !!!this is white-noizy.
PissJoy has a Sladey singalong with a volume the likes of youve never experienced before.
I think the rest of the rock n roll world will catch up to this one day and theyrll be a lot of albums sounding like this...industrial glam/industrial punk.
I say its a work of art because love it or hate it,once youve heard this youll probably never forget it,now thats an album for the rock n roll world !!!

5 out of 5 stars It sounds a little bit like this...(shout the next bit).......2000-09-04
