A Different Dickinson .......2007-03-15

Somewhere between Iron Maiden's two albums, Seventh Son of a Seventh Son and No Prayer for the Dying, Mr. Bruce Dickinson took a little time out and did a solo album. I first came across the original CD while stationed in Germany in the early 90's (it broke due to theft,...thankfully this one came out) and after watching the tape that went along with this (Dive! Dive! Live!....again thankfully it is now on the DVD collection). In my opinion....pure rock fun. The only 2 tracks that I wasn't fond of was Son of a Gun and No Lies. Everything else in between is just great listening material. So boys and girls....if you are a fan of Iron Maiden and wanting to take a different stroll down Musical Lane....get this copy. You won't regret it. And while you're at it....get the compelation DVD as well. Both are enjoyable.

UP THE IRONS!!!!!

A promising songwriter's debut.......2005-09-23

While this CD really shines in certain areas musically, I felt overall it was more a sign of things to come.

The problems I have are the inconsistency of the writing, the slightly ragged, unpolished quality of some singing, and the cheese of the sterile 'eighties sound' combined with verging-on-pretentious performances in a few places.

I took to Bruce's stuff a lot more after he left Maiden, regrouped, and went toward a fatter, more organic sound and regaining his powerful wail.

This is a nice little collection of ditties but it feels almost painfully earnest to prove itself as a pop record. Bruce made the point he could do that genre and write huge singles. The man later proved he could be a lot more interesting than that.

Good attempt for the first album!.......2005-08-24

It all started with Nightmare on Elms Street. He brought out that song Bring Your Daughter To The Slaughter...

Great album. Very different than Iron Maiden. More commercial sounding.

I love Tattooed Millionaire (this is the best version of it) but other songs are good on it too. It's just a fun rock n roll album. I love not-too-serious albums. It's great. It worked with Garage DAys with Metallica and it works with Bruce.

I find it incredible that with these albums you get extra tracks! I should re-buy these albums! It's all too good!

Bruce is a metal legend, that deserves greater respect than what he deserves. If you like Maiden, you should give Bruce a try!

He went on to make albums better than Iron Maiden! But just remember, I don't think those Iron Maiden albums were all that bad. Just not as good.

I perfer Bruce Dickinson these days. His latest album is very different from this, and in some ways I miss the old style Bruce. I somehow wish he could incorporate this rock n roll style on all his releases. Sometimes a song doesn't have to be hard and heavy to good. It's the feeling you get from the song that's most important.

What I like about this album is that it's light-hearted. There's too many songs out there these days.

The best ever?.......2004-05-26

Well this happens to be one of the greatest CD's that you will ever buy. If you like DIO, Queensryche, or Iron Maiden you are asured that you will absolutly love this CD. His voice is astounding and I can't help but listen to this CD over and over. It has been around since 1990 and I have listend to it proboly about 1000-1200 times. It is a must buy.

Classic metal.......2004-03-19

Bruce Dickinson, lead singer of Iron Maiden, has had several solo releases, but I liked this one - his first - the best. When I bought this release back in 1990 I wore out the cassette. I was a huge Iron Maiden fan at the time and automatically bought "Tattooed Millionaire" when it was released.

I was surpised how different it was from Iron Maiden, but it was a solid album and one I still enjoy listening to today, 14 years later. "Tattooed Millionaire," "Born in '58" and the remake of "All The Young Dudes" were my favorites, but most of the songs are solid. It was straight foward album rock at its best.

I admit listening to this album brings back good memories for me. I was 19 at the time and it's amazing how much my life has changed since 1990. Ah, the good old days....

Several of Dickinson's other solo releases such received more positive reviews from magazines such as "Metal Maniacs" but I will always believe "Tattooed Millionare" tops them all.

Pretty Damn Good.......2006-06-06

I enjoyed this album quite a bit but I still like Maiden a lot better. It does sound different than Maiden but Dickinson is so talented he pulls it off. Pay no attention to the moron below me. Anyone who says Blaze Bayley is better than Bruce Dickinson needs therapy. Just wow.

This is absolutely terrible and that is being generous. He is an idiot.

He thought he could ditch maiden and then waltz back in again he is arrogant. Blaze is much better than him and so is blazes solo career with his band blaze. Bruce dickinsons solo career is so bad it makes me sick to think that tatooed millionaire gets a good review he is a traitor to maiden and this album is bad.

Even britney spears is better than this tosh, give up bruce and get a new life, tatooed millionaire what kind of a bad name is that and he looks queer on the front cover so foresham to anyone who has bought this.

One of Bruce's Best !!!.......2005-07-28

If you have the other Bruce Dickinson remasters series from Sanctuary and not this 2 disc collection, you're missing out on a lot. Not only is the sound quality better than the single disc edition with the austrialian bonus tracks, you get more and better bonus tracks on this edition. That aside, this is one of Bruce Dickinson's best solo albums. It was the first of his solo albums that he recorded. He recorded this while he was still in Iron Maiden. Although it has a different feel than the Iron Maiden material, it proves that Bruce Dickinson can do almost anything and sound good. I highly recommend Iron Maiden and/or Bruce Dickinson fans to purchase this 2 disc set, whether you have the original or not.

If you liked Iron Maiden's..........2002-07-31

"Bring Your Daughter..." and "Hooks in You" then you'll probably like this album. If, on the other hand, your attidude was "doesn't sound like Maiden, and I want Dickinson's stuff to sound like Maiden" then not only will you probably not like this album, you probably won't like any of his solo efforts. I have all the studio albums, and I like them all, partially because they all have their own distinct feel to them.

Clever hooks, lots of fun.......2002-01-28

The first solo album from Iron Maiden vocalist Bruce Dickinson was clever and catchy at the time of its release back in 1990. But by comparison to what followed (a decade's worth of noteworthy and excellent albums), it probably seems pretty tame to some fans. For with each album (with the exception of the horrid Skunkworks attempt), Bruce rocked harder and harder. By the time he got to Chemical Wedding, his riffs were bone-crushing and almost too painful to listen to with headphones on.

That's why the hard rock (not HEAVY METAL) arrangements and riffs found on Tattooed Millionaire are still among my favorites. Sitting in as guest guitarist is none other than long-time friend Janick Gers who filled in six string duities in Maiden for 10 years for the departed Adrian Smith -- until Smith's return to Maiden on the Brave New World album, bringing the total number of guitars in Maiden to three.

But, back to Tattooed Millionaire.

Of the album's 10 tracks, there are many that I like a lot -- partly because I've always liked Janick's guitar style. "Son of a Gun," which kicks it all off, is great, as is the title track. "Born in '58" is fun, if frivolous, "Dive! Dive! Dive!" is a powerful, tongue-in-cheek track with a growling vocal from Bruce on the chorus and, of course, Bruce's cover of "All the Young Dudes" is another enjoyable track.

Tattooed Millionaire is melodic hard rock at its finest. If you compare it to the sounds of Accident of Birth or Chemical Wedding, I'm sure you'll think it's pretty tame. And, possibly, even pretty bad. But don't dismiss it that quickly. Keep it in its proper context (1990) and try to enjoy it for what it is.

I like Tattoed Millionaire and always have. It went out of print before I could get a copy, so I had to track it down at used CD stores all over Milwaukee when I lived there three or four years ago. I ended up finding, like, three copies of it and bought all three in case it was never reissued.

Thankfully -- for you -- Tattooed Millionaire has now been reissued. Better buy your copy now before someone changes his mind!

I miss this album.......2001-11-04

I love this album. This is the last audio tape I ever bought. I lost it sometime during my highschool days. I would love to go out and buy it again but I can never find it. (...) if you do ever come across this album buy it, I love it, my friends love it, I'm sure everyone else will too.

The start of something great..........2001-10-04

This is Bruce's first solo album before leaving Iron Maiden and striking out on his own. Is it his best? No, I would reserve praise like that for "The Chemical Wedding" or "Skunkworks". Is it his heaviest? Nope, that would probably be "Accident of Birth". Well then, what is it about this album that just stands out? It's straight from Bruce's heart. It was written, composed and recorded in a very short amount of time. It's Bruce letting loose and doing what he wants to do. It's Bruce writing about things near & dear to him ("Born in '58") and just being plain goofy ("Zulu Lulu", "Dive! Dive! Dive!"). It's awesome hard-rocking songs ("Son of a Gun", "Tattooed Millionaire"). It's a cool cover song ("All the Young Dudes"). It's an album that's better recorded than any of the last few Maiden albums. Is it a heavy metal album? No. Is it an Iron Maiden album? No. That's the whole idea. To those reviewers who say "this is disappointing", "I wouldn't play frisbee with this", "I'm a huge Maiden fan", "Steve Harris and Paul Di'Anno are sitting somewhere laughing", *knock* *knock* *knock* that's the sound of the 21st century asking you to leave the '80's and join the rest of us. It's OK. Go ahead, cut off your mullets. Take off your spiked wristbands and your spandex tights and join us. You'd be surprised at what you've missed. Iron Maiden is my favorite band. But this album is meant to be different from everything that Maiden did. The album on the whole is very good, with a little bit of everything for everyone. Bruce's band is comprised of Andy Carr, Fabio Del Rio and Janick Gers, before Bruce released The Plague of Gers on Iron Maiden. After hearing this album, I don't know what happened to Janick. His playing is pretty damn good on Tattooed Millionaire the album. Like I said before, it's not a Maiden album. And that's what Bruce was going for. Steve Harris laughing? He almost ran Maiden into the ground before he had to swallow his pride and his HUGE ego and ask Bruce to come back to Maiden. Paul Di'Anno laughing? PAUL DI'ANNO???? Let's not EVEN go there... Iron Maiden is NOT Bruce Dickinson, and Bruce Dickinson is NOT Iron Maiden (although seeing how Maiden's fortunes took a HUGE turn for the better when Bruce re-joined, that point is certainly debatable). Bruce would improve his sound and his supporting cast on his later follow-ups "Accident of Birth" and "The Chemical Wedding", but if you want to see how the seeds for Bruce's solo career were sown, "Tattooed Millionaire" is a great starting point. If you still have a mullet and end every sentence with "Maiden Rules!!", then maybe this album is not for you. BUT, if you appreciate good songwriting, and want to see the potential Bruce saw in Janick Gers before his disastrous performances in Iron Maiden, then by all means pick up "Tattooed Millionaire". You will not be disappointed.

Ugh! Disappointing.......2001-09-09

I had to chime in after seeing all the raves on this. This is the first and last Bruce CD I bought. A huge Maiden fan, I was really disappointed when this album came out. I can barely describe how bad I thought it was...I was actually embarrased for the man.

If you are like me and the other reviewer who trashed this in your Maiden tastes (ie you thought they were great up through 7th son and then...well, that was the end of maiden as far as you were concerned), steer far clear from this coaster.

Tattooed Millionaire (1990.) Bruce Dickinson's first album.

After recording Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son with Iron Maiden, Bruce Dickinson set hits sights on a solo career. And in 1990 he put together his own band, which featured former White Spirit and Gillan guitarist Janick Gers (he'd join Maiden later in the year), among others. And that year, while still a part of Maiden, Dickinson released his first solo album - Tattooed Millionaire. Did Dickinson's solo debut please his longtime fans? Read on for my review of Tattooed Millionaire.

This is a GREAT album, and it disappoints me that people bash it so often. The problem is that people were expecting a continuation of Seventh Son-era Maiden, and thus, weren't willing to give anything else a chance. Hence, Tattooed Millionaire is an album that has long gotten a bad reputation. Rather than classic Maiden-esque metal, Bruce serves up a classic hard rock style album, and he does it well (people need to understand this is a HARD ROCK album, not a HEAVY METAL album!) The gritty rocker Son Of A Gun does a good job kicking things off. The title track, which is the second on the album, is a bit overrated but still good. It's a mid-tempo melodic rocker, with a memorable chorus. In the slow and melodic Born In Fifty-Eight, Bruce tells us about his past. It's another excellent tune, not surprisingly. By far my favorite song on the album, though, would have to be the classic driving song Hell On Wheels. This is melodic rock at its very best, and the chorus is unforgettable. Gypsy Road is a little slower and softer than the tracks that came immediately before, but it's still a good one. Any big fan of Dickinson's knows one of his favorite musical subjects is World War II air combat, and on Dive! Dive! Dive! he sings about it again. It's one of the weaker tracks on here, but still far from bad. All the Young Dudes is a remake of the David Bowie-penned Mott The Hoople classic. Hard as it may be to believe, I like this version of the song every bit as much as Mott's classic version! This just goes to show how musically diverse Bruce is. Next up is Lickin' the Gun, a song about gunfights in the old west. You've gotta love Dickinson's vocals here, especially in the chorus. After that we get Zulu Lulu - one of the harder rocking songs on the album. It's a little weird, but it's still an excellent song. Closing out the album is No Lies, which is strongly reminiscent of From Here To Eternity, a song Bruce would do with Maiden two years later. From start to finish, Tattooed Millionaire serves up some of the finest classic-style hard rock around.

If you decide to buy this album, be sure you purchase the reissued version. The reissued version features several bonus tracks that weren't featured on the original pressing of the album - and all of which are excellent. If you're gonna get the album, might as well get the best version of it available!

Bruce's first solo effort differs greatly both from his Iron Maiden material, as well as his later solo material, but it's still a great album. If you like Bruce at all, I suggest picking this up. Just remember, this is NOT Iron Maiden. Listen with an open mind.

Not the Bruce you want to hear.........1999-04-24

I am a devout Dickinson supporter and own everything he has done. There is only one album that sucks, and its this one...I can't explain it, but he has no timbre or range and just simply sounds tired and worn out from the Maiden work he was neck deep in when he cut these tracks. No lie, when I bought this cassette, I put it in my car and drove around the block to return it. That fast...For the BEST Bruce Dickinson, buy his later solo work and/or from the Maiden years..."Number of the Beast" and "Piece of Mind"....

Bruce Dickinson Discovers Solo Success.......1999-03-11

Bruce released his first solo album which pools his hardcore metal background with Hard-Core Rock & Roll, Blues, and Acoustic Perfection. Although the album varies from previous Iron Maiden Recordings, the album is refreshingly unique in it's ability to showplace a Singer's talents.

Listenable, but not great........1998-08-14

This album was done while Bruce was still with Maiden, and it's quite apparent he was trying out new styles he could't do with them. Not really his best, although it's OK. I'd advise checking out his later solo albums if you're looking for a true continuation of his IM style.
