Rec-room rock stars can rejoice knowing that drum and guitar solos, long thought extinct in the post-grunge era, are alive, well, and flourishing in the hands of speed-metal granddaddies Megadeth. Seriously, Rude Awakening, the band's first-ever live set, is almost certain to benefit from renewed interest sparked by the reissue of their spruced-up debut, Killing Is My Business. . . and Business Is Good. That album, like most in Megadeth's canon, is quoted here ("Mechanix"). The band also revisits So Far, So Good. . . So What ("Hook in Mouth"), Peace Sells. . . But Who's Buying ("Peace Sells"), The World Needs a Hero ("Return to Hangar"), Countdown to Extinction ("Symphony of Destruction," "Sweating Bullets"), Youthanasia ("Train of Consequences"), Rust in Peace ("Hangar 18"), and Cryptic Writings ("Almost Honest"). Fanned across two discs, Rude Awakening's 24 tracks capture Dave Mustaine and cohorts in top form--lightning fast, muscular, nihilistic, urgent, and, of course, very, very angry--with crowd noise kept to a bearable minimum. --Kim Hughes

4 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2007-04-12

If you are a fan of Gerald Levert's works, then you should like this cd. My favorite track on this cd is "It's Written All Over Your Face."

4 out of 5 stars The most underrated of the '90s R&B male groups.......2006-02-27

I felt that the Rude Boys were the most underrated R&B group back in the '90s. Although they released several albums, nothing could top their 1990 debut. Full of soul and strong vocals, the Rude Boys had it together on songs like "Written all Over Your Face." "Written" sounds like they could have done it on a street corner with a live band, rather than in a studio. There's such a realness to it. The other 9 songs are just as strong, with that R&B/hip-hop hybrid felt on most numbers. They should have been as big as Boyz II Men and other top groups, but they went their own course and were comfortable with it.

5 out of 5 stars A RUDE FAN.......2005-05-09

WHEN I FIRST HEARD OF THE RUDE BOYS,I EXPECTED A FOUL-MOUTHED RAP GROUP TO BE WEARING THAT NAME.WAS I EVER PLEASENTLY SURPRISED.THERE ARE A LOT OF OUTSTANDING BALLADS ON THIS ALBUM.WRITTEN ALL OVER YOUR FACE WAS AN INSTANT CLASSIC,AND IS ONE OF MY FAVORITES TODAY.I'VE WON A FEW TALENT SHOWS WITH MY RENDITION OF THIS SONG.ARE YOU LONELY FOR ME WAS ALSO VERY STRONG.THE ONE BALLAD THAT WAS(kind of)OVERLOOKED WAS I'M GOING THRU.I WAS EXTREMELY FOND OF HEAVEN TOO,BECAUSE I COULD RELATE AT THE TIME.IN MY OPINION RUDE HOUSE WAS A LITTLE BETTER THAN THIS,BUT BELIEVE ME YOU CAN'T LOSE WITH THIS CD.

4 out of 5 stars Bingo Bounce, Banks, and Little!.......2003-10-08

The Rude Boys' debut album featured a few chart-topping singles, two of them charted big. The first chart-topper was the Philly Soul sounding/bingo bounce (a clone of The O'Jays' "Use Ta Be My Girl") "Written All Over Your Face," which was penned by group member Larry "Bingo" Marcus (cousin of B.B. King). The vocals of Joe Little, Buddy Banks and a cameo appearance by Gerald LeVert gave the single a nice ride on the charts for 31 weeks; No. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 1 on the R&B charts. The other huge hit was "Are You Lonely for Me." The well-rounded baritone of Joe Little and the towering tenor of Buddy Banks gave the single a missle launching start on the charts, without a video the single hit No. 1. The third and fourth release singles "Come on Lets Do This" and "Heaven" both broke into the top 40; the more soulful "Heaven" hit No. 15 and the more moderately-paced number "Come on Lets Do This" hit No. 38. The album also featured other great songs like the tight dance track "I Feel For You;" "I Need You" and "I'm Going Thru" are two potentially classic R&B ballads, emotional testimony at its best! Its not unusual for great vocalists to make great albums, outstanding singers with amazing delivery on every song, amazing.

5 out of 5 stars Megadeth rule in style on Rude Awakening.......2007-08-01

Rude Awakening (2002.), a Megadeth live concert DVD/CD release

Thrash metal gods Megadeth have enjoyed a long and glittering career. Over that time Dave Mustaine and Co. have gained a great reputation for putting on an excellent live act. However, prior to the 2001-02 `World Needs A Hero' album tour, Megadeth was yet to release a full concert on DVD. Enter 2002's `Rude Awakening' DVD which shows the band in action at a concert in Arizona. Put simply, this is a concert DVD that any Megadeth fan should own. It is a fantastic snapshot of a legendary band on top live form. Granted, you're initial thoughts may be negative about the DVD given that the line-up in action is not the `classic' line-up that featured Marty Friedman and Nick Menza. However, this couldn't be further from the truth as quartet consisting of Dave Musitaine, Dave Ellefson on bass, Al Pitrelli on guitar and Jimmy DeGrasso on drums have great chemistry and perform as a solid unit.

This DVD is an awesome package (note I recommend the DVD for this over the CD version). Not only is there full footage of the concert but there is also band interviews, studio footage of the band recording `The World Needs A Hero' and some bonus live footage. The bonus live footage is especially great as it shows an excellent small underground live set that the band did, the highlights being a punchy performance of out-take classic `Angry Again' and another beautiful version of `A Tout Le Monde'. Returning to the main bulk of the DVD which is the live Arizona concert, there are many reasons why this release is a winner. Firstly, Dave Mustaine's performance at the forefront of the band speaks volumes. Dave never says too much to the crowd whilst on stage but then again he doesn't need to as he possesses a large amount of performance charisma and intensity that keeps the crowd drawn into the music. His vocals are excellent throughout the concert. Al Pitrelli will surprise many who watch this DVD who don't know of his ability on the guitar. He plays many of the band's solos like he's been a member of the group since they began and he trades off plenty of solos and melodies with Mustaine effortlessly. Mustaine himself comments in the interviews how good a guitarist Al is. Dave Ellefson is excellent on the bass and shows why he's been such a vital member of Megadeth through the years. Jimmy DeGrasso gives an insane, brutal and inspired performance on the drums which adds plenty of fireworks to the Megadeth sound.

The set list selection for the concert is a very strong one, mixing all parts of the band's career. Every album up to `The World Needs A Hero' is represented by at least one song except for the forgettable `Risk' album. I could talk all day about each song but instead I'll say what tracks were for me the highlights. `In My Darkest Hour' is performed with great emotion and intensity by the band making it a true stirring performance of the Megadeth classic. The band play an awsome extended version of `She-Wolf' which involves some amazing guitar trade off from Mustaine and Pitrelli that never lose interest or flair. Jimmy DeGrasso's drum solo to finish is MENTAL and sounds brilliant. `Hangar 18' and `Return To Hangar' are performed with power and finesse in vintage Megadeth style. Dave gives his usual speech about the `Mechanix' song before blasting out a high energy version of that timeless classic. The version of `Hook In Mouth' is excellent and the finishing songs in `Peace Sells' and `Holy Wars' make for full out headbanging!

Buying Megadeth's `Rude Awakening' is definitely money well spent in my book. Any Megadeth fan should own this; it is another viewing of a band that are true metal legends. This is a final snapshot of Megadeth before the temporary split due to Mustaine's hand injury and marks an excellent swansong to one chapter in Megadeth's career. I'd highly recommend this DVD as well as the recently released `That One Night In Buenos Aires' which shows the current Megadeth line-up in action on the `System Has Failed Tour'.

MY RATING: 9/10

4 out of 5 stars A great deal, but there are a couple things to complain about.......2006-02-05

Before I get into this review, let me say you are getting a great deal for what you pay. 2 discs full of (well, partially full of) classic Megadeth. This cd has great sound quality and a few cool places in between songs where Dave talks, however brief they may be. It is also cool how the two new guys step up and deliver all the classics with the same power as the Marty and Menza.

Now some of the bad things. The songs selection is just ok in my opinion. They play a lot off of The World Needs a Hero, which is understandable considering thats what they're touring. It's actually a very good album, but I thought they chose a lot of the wrong ones. Burning Bridges and 1000 Times Goodbye really aren't special. Off of Cryptic Writings they take Trust, She-Wolf, and Almost Honest. ALmost Honest should not be on here, and on the other two Mustaine has a little vocal trouble, he just sounds off. She Wolf does have sweet guitar and drum solos at the end though, making it well worth listening to. Other than A Tout Le Monde, it seems like Mustaine also has trouble singing the tracks from Youthanasia too. During Train of Consequences he forgets the words and mumbles.

Some of the best tracks include Hangar 18, Return to Hangar, Mechanix, Dread and the Fugitive Mind, and everything off Peace Sells. The best track though, which surprised me, is Hook In Mouth hands down. It is performed just like it is on the album.
Once again, this is a great deal for what you're paying, and though there are a few lyrical mess-ups, it's the only live Megadeth CD out there, and therefore a must have for any Deth fan.

One other thing. There's a half-cd/half-dvd version. Don't buy it. You lose half the songs when you can really just go pick this and the full length DVD up seperately for a better price.

5 out of 5 stars Great live album.....but where's the countdown?.......2005-07-22

Megadeth's sound on this live album was superb, and included much of their best work........but where is "Countdown to Extinction"? That's my favorite MD song!

5 out of 5 stars Rude Awakening.......2004-12-14

This is a great cd or dvd for any megadeth fan. It gives you a little taste of Megadeth Live! Must get for any hard rock fan!

4 out of 5 stars Mustaine Not Mellow Live Either.......2004-02-26

This double live album and apparent send off for one of thrash metal's giants shows why they should be(and usually are)respected as true metal stalwarts. Leader Dave Mustaine's fiery tongue and trademark riffing are on full display in too numerous places to mention. Newer songs like "Dread..." and "Return To Hangar" sound just as menacing and accusatory as older chesnuts like "Mechanix" and the band's long time credo "Peace Sells." Lead guitarist Al Pitrelli adds his own spark while reproducing the classic lines of "Wake Up Dead" and "Ashes..." The musicianship and mind of Mustaine is stellar and still full of life after 20 long years and this disc shows that. While his band may never have reached the pinnacle of popularity Metallica enjoyed, that in no way makes Megadeth any less important. And I'm sure Dave would be the first to tell you.

4 out of 5 stars Black Smif-N-Wessun.......2005-08-12

Smif-N-Wessun drops first album under the assumed name, Cocoa Brovaz with the LP entitled The Rude Awakening, after legal battles over name. The Rude Awakening is the group's sophomore effort that didn't fall short from where the first release left off. As on the up-tempo "Won On Won", Tek and Steele have that chemistry as before. As more live instruments replaced the keyboard filled tracks, titles like "Blown Away" featuring Buckshot has a relaxing feel to it. "The Cash" break down the street science of making money as they give tales in the form of stories as done so on "Dry Snitch". As the duo travel back in time for the "Game Of Life" featuring F.L.O.W. over a simple R&B track. As a lot of their rhymes presents street smarts and reality driven titles like "Back 2 Life" is arson for them. "Bucktown USA" is more like "Bucktown" from their first album as the represents over a Mr. Walt track. In comparison, this album is a lot more mature and thoughtful, as Tek flows in his almost-reggae tone and Steele handles some production on here. Actually this isn't an awakening all that bad, but it is something to wake up to.

4 out of 5 stars The Cocoa B'z rip the mic again.......2001-09-03

"The Rude Awakening" was not a disappointment for me because I copped this Cd first than "Dah Shinin'", so it was hella tight for me. But buying "Dah Shinin'" i realized Cocoa B'z sophomore album was not a 5-star classic release. This album has a lot of good joint like "Myah Angelow", "Memorial" with the reggae-king Eek-A-Mouse, "Black trump" with Rae and "Game of life" with FLOW. Telling the truth, I liked all the songs. my fav. is "Back 2 life" with that Mobb Deep sample. It sounds phat! I think this album is aight but not a "Dah Shinin'". But I gotta admit that the Cocoa B'z is one of the realest hip-hop crews around! And that's a fact! Told: 4-star release.

4 out of 5 stars Rude Dogs.......2001-07-06

The same stick up boy flow is there. The Beatminers are in effect again, so is the entire BCC. Ruck especially shines on Maya Angelow. The name is the only thing that changes, along with the beats reflecting more regions than BK. That explains the fuzzy reception from journalists but street regulars know Buktown is everywhere. Highlights of this joint is Bucktown USA, The Cash and Still Shinin.

5 out of 5 stars Music meets politics; both win.......2001-11-15

This is such a fierce, strong masterpiece, I can't understand its "limited availability." But this IS the music business, isn't it? If you know Irishman Andy Irvine from Sweeney's Men, Planxty, or Patrick Street, you've got some idea of his skill on the plucked strings, that perfectly controlled ragged voice, and his songwriting ability. Seems he likes to do albums with other people, though (the duo with Paul Brady is another masterpiece, and the best thing Brady ever did, I think). So there are precious few "Andy gets out into the spotlight" moments in recorded history. This one is for the most part a series of narrative songs with a careful lyrical wit and fine tunes and playing. Arrangements tend toward the small combo and work throughout. And this album is, in its amazing way, "telling" without trying to wave that fact in your face. Some folks discussed will be familiar (Wallenberg), some won't (polar explorers); but the picture of Sinclair Lewis on his way down is painfully spectacular. Andy records when he's ready, rarely enough, sadly. Grab this stirring, tough-minded, beautiful moment before it disappears entirely.

Years before Helmet started playing staccato alternative metal, Prong was writing caustic stop-start riffs that bisected snarling vocals and stark, simple drum beats. At the time, the music was viewed as fragmentary and awkward, but in retrospect, Prong's dissonant, percussive approach pre-dated the stop-start attack of bands like Korn and Limp Bizkit, only without the hip-hop influences. Rude Awakening, Prong's swan song, is their most tuneful album, replete with semi-melodic vocals and percolating bass grooves. But even though it's not as brutal as the band's earlier work, it still packs quite a punch. Terry Date's production work (Pantera, deftones) imbues the guitar tones with a savage crunch and songs like "Mansruin," "Controller," and "Slicing" cut right to the core. --Jon Wiederhorn

I am gona put it in short words i buy this cd because i heard one song at a bar and the Dj told me it was Prong i dont know what hapened. being a person who likes and have many bands of industrial/metal i can say this is one of the worst albums i have ever heard if not the worst.
the vocals , the simplicity of the music, the uninspired composition and sampling, there is not one point to save.

Prong ARE and were one of the most underrated and inspiring bands in the metal scene. Helmet was ALWAYS over-regarded and cant hold a candle to Prong. Tommy Victor remains an inspiration, and all of Prongs releases should be viewed as stepping stones...Nuff said!HAIL PRONG! Try Scorpio Rising! Great CD!

5 out of 5 stars This Album Anything But A 'Rude Awakening'...Another Great Album..........2005-11-09

Prong's CLEANSING is the definitive Prong album, and with cuts like "Snap Your Fingers, Snap Your Neck", Prong defined the importance of metal in the rock genre. No one had any doubt that CLEANSING was a powerful record, complete with heavy riffs, first-rate drumwork, and throbbing and tuneful bass. If you thought Prong could not match that album, RUDE AWAKENING is nearly just like it's predecessor: heavy, uncompromising metal that's in-your-face and downright brutal. Although some of the album doesn't seem as heavy, the production work of Terry Date only helps to intensify Tommy Victor's guitar.

The title track is without a doubt one of the best tracks on the album, and it's cutting shards of guitar and Tommy's vocals, along with Ted Parson's excellent drum fills and Paul Raven's tuneful basswork, just compliment the track even more. It remains one of their best songs, and it caught radio to a degree. Opening track "Controller" is brutal, heavy, and doesn't let go of its grip on you. "Avenue of the Finest" also continues the intricate, drilling guitar riffs, right on through to the closing bonus cut, "Proud Division", which is undeniably a catchy, compact metal song. Other songs like "Mansruin" and "Face Value" also scale up on the volume, never letting up the intensity and showing the metal that Prong truly perfected on CLEANSING and even PROVE YOU WRONG or BEG TO DIFFER. Not one weak track, this is truly a splendid album.

It's interesting to note that after this album, there was no word or news from Prong until the announced release of SCORPIO RISING, and even the 100% LIVE album, which to a degree still managed to entertain us Prong fanatics. Had RUDE AWAKENING been Prong's swansong, it would have definitely been a strong one. If you're a fan of CLEANSING, no doubt you will immerse yourself in the precision and masterful metal of RUDE AWAKENING.

I was disappointed with this album. It did serve one good purpose. The cd did make a great coaster.

4 out of 5 stars The art of going out with a bang.......2005-05-08

Prong mastermind Tommy Victor made sure that he and his band would go out with a bang with "Rude Awakening". Featuring the same kind of sludgy riffs with a touch of industrial beats that were featured on "Cleansing", and the production by Terry Date helps Prong sound the tightest they ever have on record. And much like "Cleansing", the only real problem with "Rude Awakening" is that it wears thin towards the end of the album. Predating the nu-metal wave that hit the metal world with the arrival of Limp Bizkit and the rise of Korn, Prong choose to bow out, and they still never received the recognition they so much deserved: much like other bands in the 90's such as Helmet and Corrosion of Conformity. Standout tracks include the title track, "Face Value", and "Slicing"; which feature Tommy and crew doing some of their finest work. Tommy would return in 2003 with a spanking new lineup to re-start Prong, but "Rude Awakening" and everything before it is the real deal.
