The Best Version of the Album That's Out There Today!.......2006-08-05

This Japanese mini-lp sleeve version of this best of compilation of Frank Zappa's best ever "commercial" hits is the one to get. The packaging is a work of art and the remastered sound quality of the 2 discs is extremely well done. I also have the older Rykodisc version and I can tell you that as good as the sound quality was for that version, this version is even better. We also get 2 tracks that are not on the Rykodisc version: "Bobby Brown Goes Down" and "Planet of the Baritone Women". All the lyrics are included in both English and Japanese on an insert as well as an interesting essay on Frank on another insert too.

The clown prince of rock guitar never fails to bring a smile to my face each time I put this album on and his pure comic genius is evident for all to hear. It takes a great talent to be so confident in his own ability to make a joke and laugh about it. Frank never seems to take himself and rock music in general too seriously but clearly seems to be having a lot of fun doing it. He reminds me of Mozart who although being a prodigious talent, still found the time to compose "Ein musikalicher Witz" or "A musical joke" where he attempts to play "poorly" to poke fun at provincial musicians and composers and yet, the "joke" is so well done, it's actually quite good.

Frank is so good that even his "jokes" rank very highly in terms of quality musicianship. Anyone looking for the best of the more accessible material that Frank has done over his career need look no further. Highly recommended.

I highly recommend this CD to anyone who is remotely receptive to healing solutions other than traditional medicine. In my case the visualizations on this CD completely turned around a failing IVF cycle. In my case the doctor was ready to cancel after 5 days. I started using the CD and the tests that are used to measure progress totally turned around. We thought that we would get 7-8 viable eggs. We got 15 instead, 13 of them fertilized and 4 made it to the blastocyst stage. For a 40+ woman of "advanced maternal age" these results were truly exceptional.

While this description may be rather technical for those not dealing with infertility themselves, I wanted to share these numbers for a reason. I think it proves that the connection between body and mind is truly powerful and mystical. Jo-Jo's music and Mary's guided visualizations allowed me to make hope and desire into reality. If you want to be healed you need to try this CD.

This CD is uniquely relaxing. I don't know of others out there that are like this. I have difficulty meditating, but the meditation on this CD along with the cello playing music, quite literally, carry me away from my busy world and help me focus on simply being - something that a mom of a 2 year old really needs.

In 1984, two generations of master folksinger-songwriters - Tom Paxton and Bob Gibson - teamed up with relative newcomer Anne Hills, soon to gain recognition as their peer, to perform for 18 months as Best of Friends. The trio toured the US, UK, and Canada but made no formal recordings, which left Best of Friends a missing and much sought after link in the chain of recorded folk history - until now! A live February 1985 concert taped at Holstein's, then one of Chicago's finest folk clubs, and broadcast on a local radio station, recently resurfaced and is now presented as the only available recording by this three-fold supergroup.

The trio's senior member, Bob Gibson was a unique folk-pop stylist who popularized the 12-string guitar and inspired many of the major country-rock stars of the '60s and '70s, including The Byrds and The Eagles. On "Best of Friends," he contributes three original compositions, including the inspirational "Pilgrim Song," which addresses the 12-step recovery program for substance abusers. Gibson's strengths as an instrumental and vocal arranger are much in evidence, with his trademark 12-string, banjo and voice deftly underpinning Paxton (vocals, acoustic guitar), whose songs dominate the set, and Anne Hills (vocals, acoustic guitar), whose warm soprano provides the rich, lovely bond linking the three singers. The group also performs Anne's song, "While You Sleep."

The CD's material and the intimate mood of the performance are models of original folk music. Paxton, a GRAMMY nominee for 2002's "Looking for the Moon" CD on Appleseed, presents the Tom Lehreresque nightmare "One Million Lawyers," tributes to political martyrs and musical heroes, atmospheric Americana, environmental and sociological concerns, romantic ballads, good-time anthem "Bottle of Wine," and his signature "Ramblin' Boy." Gibson's "Let the Band Play Dixie" calls for social unity, and its quote from Abraham Lincoln could be the motto of this CD: "We are gathered not in anger but in celebration."

Long Overdue.......2005-06-16

I have checked Amazon several times over the last fifteen years hoping for this album to come out on CD. I had heard most, if not all, of the cuts on Dick Cerri's Music Americana when I lived in Washington DC, and I loved what I heard.

Bob Gibson, while perhaps one of the least well-known of the great singers of the folk revival, was my favorite folksinger while I was growing up. It has been said that his voice was "too good" for folk music. He had a wonderful warm baritone, and a great sense of humor. He demonstrated with this group as well as on his glorious recordings with Bob (or has he sometimes called himself- Hamilton) Camp that he could also blend beautifully in harmony.

Tom Paxton, of course, has a great knack for writing clever words and melodies with sly social commentary. He is perhaps the weakest pure singer of the three.

Anne Hills has a beautiful, pure, almost operatic soprano. I have listened to Anne Hills recordings where she sings on her own, and I have generally no liked them. Mostly because she tends to traditional old English folk material that doesn't resonate for me.

Combine the three of them and you have a great trio, reminiscent in some ways of Peter, Paul and Mary but more interesting.

Every song on this album is enjoyable. I particularly liked "Sing for the Song", "And Loving You", and "Let the Band Play Dixie". I liked every song on the album, but my favorites are those where there is significant harmonizing and I haven't heard the song ten thousand times as I have with most Tom Paxton songs.

The quality of sound on the CD is good, no complaints with the transfer. Much of this was recorded live, so the possibility of sound compression was very real, but I am very happy with this CD.

This is one of the greatest folk music CDs ever made. If you like folk music buy it.

WTF!!!!!!!??????.......2005-02-24

Mini-Best? BIG MISTAKE! If they were to create a REAL MINI-Best, they could've put at least 5 original songs instead of just 3 original songs (Jump, Panama, Top of the World) and hell, those aren't even Halen's best? And for the karaoke songs, they could've put em on a WHOLE compliation of Karaoke Van Halen songs. SHEESH! Did the band really do this?! I think NOT. The record company should be shot for making this F****** OVERPRICED FOR ONLY 5 DAMN SONGS. Import or not, it's BEYOND a waste of cash.

Best Of, no, but for Van Halen karaoke fans, a must!.......2004-03-30

True, as a best of set, this is, well, not, but as a karaoke fan who is tired of finding crappy version of Van Halen songs on poorly done karaoke discs, it doesn't get any better than this. Jump is one of those songs I've heard many karaoke versions of, and they are all terrible, even the version recorded by the best karaoke maker there is, SoundChoice. No one can play the keyboard part like Eddie, and no emulation has even come close to getting it right. Top of the World is the same story. Even Soundchoice's version is pretty darn bad, but the real deal is impossible to beat. So, if you're a singer who wants some backing tracks or a guitarist/bassist/drummer trying to find a good version of these tunes to jam with, this cd is perfect for you. Otherwise, if you're just a casual VH fan and really want the best of, pick up the regular BEST OF release and the upcoming volume two this summer (2004). My review is based entirely on the fact that as far as karaoke tracks go, this is what true fans will want. I only wish Van Halen would put out an entire album of backing tracks to their complete greatest hits album. I'd love to hear what Eddie and Mikey are playing while Sammy's singing his heart out. Good luck!

What the hell is this supposed to be?.......2004-03-12

Van Halen is a rock band that has never failed to please. They've been a hit all around the world, and like a number of American rock bands, they have a fairly big audience in Japan. This means a number of American releases released over there have bonus tracks - or likewise, they get some releases that never even see the light of day - including this one. Read on for my review.

PROS:
-If you're a die-hard Van Halen collector, this will go great in your collection. And that's about it for the good things I have to say about this.

CONS:
-MINI-BEST!? WTF!? This concept makes no sense at all. How can it be a "best of" with only three unique songs!?
-THERE ARE ONLY FIVE SONGS HERE, AND TWO OF THEM ARE WORDLESS KARAOKE VERSIONS! Such things have no place on a so-called "best of."
-This costs just as much as a full-length hits compilation, so why not just get the real thing?

OVERALL:
This release just confuses me. Why the band would put something dumb like this out to make a few quick bucks is beyond me - I thought they knew better. Steer clear of this unless you're a completist.
