A lot of 70's Music.......2005-09-20
If you really like 70's themes, you should like this CD. It was a little too dated for me.
Bond and beyond on an excellent career retrospective........1998-08-25
Imitation is often considered the greatest form of flattery. John Barry's oeuvre has been sampled by dozens of contemporary musical artists, and he is often credited as being the godfather of "trip hop" (check recent albums by Portishead and Mono to hear the Barry influence). The Academy-award winning composer has been producing music for over forty years, but this collection focuses on the artist's most commercially successful period, the 1960's. The instantly recognizable and inimitable Barry style is well documented throughout 23 varied compositions. Selections range from classic to obscure, and include all the title tracks from the early James Bond soundtracks. Barry's film and television music is the defining sound of that era - lush orchestrations, cool jazzy riffs, pure excitement. "Themeology" is an excellent starting point for the novice collector and equally attractive for the long-time admirer.

Girlschool - 'Hit & Run' (Castle).......2006-07-04
Originally released in 1981,this was Girlschool's second lp.Well written and played girl's night out of 'New Wave Of British Heavy Metal' to be fully taken in here. They're like an all-female version of Motorhead. Most notable cuts include the rocking opener "C'mon Let's Go","(I'm Your)Victim",their cover of ZZ Top's "Tush", title track "Hit&Run" and "Future Flash". So,you get the original album eleven song, plus nine(9)bonus cuts on the CD reissue. A definite should-have.
Finally on CD!!! But..........2006-02-14
GIRLSCHOOL were a sadly overlooked heavy metal band made up of (guess what!) girls! But despite what you might think of a band with girls playing their instruments, GIRLSCHOOL played with such an intensity and a knack for hooky, catchy songs that some of their male counterparts twisted in shame. Despite being spawned during the NEW WAVE OF BRITISH HEAVY METAL's peak, GIRLSCHOOL's sound owed much to fellow punks like DISCHARGE and GBH and of course, MOTORHEAD, with whom they made a friendship that lasts even to this date. The guitar sounds are decidedly brutal, making any of DEF LEPPARD's records of the time (1980-1983) sound positively tame in comparison. HIT AND RUN is GIRLSCHOOL at its most intense, heaviest and fastest, yet the songs were really memorable and had this had a more "subtle" production it would have been an international hit. Songs like "Yeah Right", "Come on Let's go" and the punkish "Watch Your Step" were melodic yet utterly heavy. The press at the time labelled them "MOTORHEAD with breasts" and to a certain extent they were the female equivalent to that influential band. No other female band has sounded any better. Someone said something about the DONNAS here, and, just for the record, the DONNAS' "spend the night" actually sounds very close (production and song wise) to what GIRLSCHOOL were aiming at here. Of course, 25 years later a band like the DONNAS can get away with doing this stuff, but back in the very early 80's we only had GIRLSCHOOL.
One more thing: this cd seems to have ommited the song, "Race With The Devil". As far as I can remember, it was cover song but it really gelled well with the band's original material. It's a shame that song was not included for it would had made this CD a truly complete re issue.
For fans of thrashy british heavy metal and MOTORHEAD. Buy or die!!!
Watch Yer Step!.......2004-09-09
This is the best rock record ever recorded by an all-girl band.
This is the second best NWOBHM record, behind only "Killers" by Iron Maiden.
I would give $1,000,000 to hang out with Corin Tucker and listen to this together...
It's untouchable. 65% Motorhead, 15% AC/DC, 10% Van Halen, 10% The Ramones.
The songwriting is immpecable. Production superb. (Best rythym guitar sound in the history of the world)
All those lame bands like The Donnas and Sahara Hotnights just can't hold a candle to this.
What's it mean when we live in a world where your MOM'S rock 'n' roll kicks your rock 'n' roll's ass???
Sad, but this is beautiful.

Not A Typical TKK Album Was Kinda Dissappointing.......2005-10-29
I am a die hard TKK fan and have heard and bought every album they ever made. This album along with a later album they released A Crime For All Seasons were dissappointing. The retro 50s 60s acid lounge trip thing and the lyrics got annoying. The only song I enjoyed was "Portrait Of The Damned" only because I liked the lyrics and the beat and found it sexy. The rest of the songs and even the album cover are lame. I dont condemn them for trying something new but they shoulda stuck to their regulra sound cuz I feel they did a better job at it and mastered it. And Satan??I couldnt find nothing about Satan on here, just lyrics that made no sense, minus "Portrait Of The Damned". The reason it got 2 stars is cuz I dont hate the band and "Portrait Of The Damned" sounded tight.
Hardcore TKK fans, get over yourself. This album rules! .......2005-08-17
First of all, my husband and I are longtime goth/industrial fans, and we both love this album. It's campy, it's loungy, it's fun, it's dancey, and it's great cooking music (and roadtrip music!).
From the opening of "Hit and Run Holiday", I knew I was going to love this album. I was right. It's a bit more sophisticated than the B-52's, and much better to dance to. I'll admit, my musical taste is a bit wacky, and I can get down to both Wumpscut and Frank Sinatra.
Most of our more serious friends in the scene regard this album is sacriledge. We humbly disagree. If you have a sense of humor and like kitschy music, you'll love it. Hopefully.
Hit the Road With Rockin Tunes Baby! TKK Rocks Out.......2005-02-18
Yeah this albums got "Street Beat"! My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult is a cool band but this is a redefining piece from start to end: this album really rocks. Its got the cool 50's-60's lounge sound with tons of horns. But this album is pumped with energy and from the first track this album is a fun trip. TKK is a wild band that normall appeals to the Goth/Industrial scene but this album has more widespread appeal with an accessible sound and not such a heavy sound as much of the bands other work this is one album that you can throw into a party mix and let go...
Starting off with a sample the first and title track starts of a little cool but gives a prelude to the fun that the album provides. As it reaches its roaring climax you can help but smile. And this album takes off from there rolling right into "Glamour is a Rocky Road" a song that is full-on glam: totally deliberate, extroverted and full throttle fun. From here were presented with "Apollo 69" which is as the title suggests totally over the moon and "Portrait of the Damned" which is cool and probably the most subdued song on the work.
I could go through each song track by track but I am not going to. Get this one, it is FUN. It makes great driving music that you will force you to sing tap your steering wheel and probably break speed limits. This also makes good party music. If you are a fan of TKK and you dont have it well... GET IT. If not and if even if you hate the industrial scene this is still a very fun album that is a total departure from TKK's normal sound. I think you'll agree after a listen or too that this really is a fun album.

A Girl Needs A Gun Like A Boy Needs A Girl.......2004-09-16
Quite possibly one of my favorite albums ever recorded! Being a dyed in the cloth TKK Fan (I See Good Spirits, et al)as well as a fan of Stax Soul, 60's Garage, Beyond the Valley of the Dolls and Rockabilly to name a few, I can say with certainty that this should have been a classic. One of the few that I can listen to over and over without getting sick of.
My oly regret is I wish that they would have had better publicity and really tapped into the Sixties dance, Vampyro Lesbos Trip that was happening when this came out instead of trying to force feed this to the Baby Vamps of Yore. They could have easily assumed their rightful position ahead of White Zombie and Marilyn Manson and conquered the Dance Scene as well.
A Great Band, A Great Sound. Cheers!
"Hit & Run" is different, but fun........2004-07-12
As stated by others, this is not your typical "Thrill Kill Kult" release. There's still doses of sex and drugs, but Satan has left the building and gone to the beach. It's really hard to compare this to anything, but that 50's-campy-surf vibe isn't far off, just with a "TKK" edge. Not every track here is a winner, but I'll always keep this for the title track, and "Glamour Is A Rocky Road" alone. Both are awesome. The rest is decent, and it ends with a nice little instrumental number, which I never thought I'd say of this band. Overall it's a long way from their dark debut, but it's still the "Hottest Party In Town".

I love this album!.......2005-11-20
Someone compared them to Haoni sucks please! This a great album from start to finish good riffs not to complicated and not to simple and boring! Reminds me more of early AC/DC with the blusey influence and Cinderella's garage raspy vocal sound! If you like good rock and roll(not so much punk, but still a punk vibe around it) with a bite this is for you! Strange love also is good and kind of a continuation of this album!
Moody Brilliance.......2005-10-09
People like to dismiss this version of T.S.O.L. as not original, but who cares. This line up and this album were gold. Every song on this gem gives the listener a unique view into what this band could have been if they only took the time and had the will to refine their sound. Instead they reversed course and ended their progression after this album. The vocals are spot on, the melodies will grab you and keep you entranced and the lyrics are a bit dark and moody, and the overall vibe will put you in rock n roll heaven from the first song to the last!
True Sounds Of Loverboy?.......2004-08-21
Well, truth be told, this album's not as bad as it should've been, but if you're looking for the same band that belted out "Abolish Government" and "World War 3" during the peak of the LA punk scene, avoid this puppy at all costs. This is the late 80's incarnation of TSOL which featured Joe Wood standing in the vocal shoes of the great Jack Grisham. The title track is a charged anthemic rocker somewhat reminiscent of AC/DC or Alice Cooper, but for the most part this album's a pretty laughable slab of hair rock slop.
GREAT great still PUNKS OUT.......2003-11-25
great GENUINE angst driven hard ROCK album, from the AWFULL ERA of gun n roses MOTLEY CRUE, they look lame their hair is stupid but the tunes RULE. take my WORD.THEIR AINT A CLINCKER,anywhere to be found, TOO UNBEILEVABLY GOOD,METAL hard rock ALONG WITH hanoi ROCKS,rescues US FROM awful RADIO programed HAIRbands or GENUINE AWFUL alternative.
Changed style, still good.......2003-11-15
This is rated way too low, and I have to correct that some with my own opinion. I have all of TSOL's prior work in addition to Hit and Run. Yes, they used to have a punk edge, and yes Revenge is an absolute classic everyone should have. Hit and Run, however, is an excellent metal release. I don't see how you could not love this release if you like GnR's Appetite for Destruction and later releases. The vocals are good, the lyrics are good, the playing is good, and the production is good.

Would you look at these hits?.......2004-08-10
If there's one thing about Big Sugar, it's that they sure knew how to write hits. If you're a fan of classic rock, rock, alternative rock, or any kind of rock, you'd like these songs. In fact, you've probably heard them on a radio and not known who they were by. Now you know: Big Sugar.
The last CD from Big Sugar.......2003-09-24
Sadly this is going to be the last CD from Big Sugar (which is going their separate ways after their tour this summer) but they have gone out on a high with a great CD and live album. The live disc (run) is a little better than their best of disc (run) but it is a must buy for all Big Sugar fans.

Customer Reviews:
Great albums, Horrible sound, .......2007-01-14
These albums from Columbia records came out in the middle 70's. I always liked Ian Matthews' voice from the first time I heard it on his Fairport Convention work. The albums themsleves represent some rather refined singing. It's a pity the sound on this disc is so bad.
Whoever did the mastering on these albums should be shot. The sound is horrid. I've waited 25 years to get these albums on CD (I owned both on LP) and I'm appalled: The sound is simply awful. It's harsh and unfocused. There is no bass whatsoever, and the upper midrange is screechingly over-emphasized. The sound of the cymbals is also horrible. I'm sick and tired of incompetent remastering jobs.
I'm writing to the company to complain, and to demand a new mastering job. This is absolutely unacceptable. It is really a form of fraud, in my opinion, to offers such poor products.
I experienced the same problem with Genesis remasters. I think these people are completely deaf and sadists as well.
DON'T buy this disc. Save your money and have your ear-drums pierced by professional sadists.
There is no excuse for such lousy sound quality. I have many other CDs from albums that are as old or older, and the sound is just fine.
A COMMERCIAL PROPOSITION.......2006-10-06
At long last the Release of GO FOR BROKE / HIT AND RUN as a Twofer CD. Correct me if I am wrong but I believe this is the first time they have been in CD form.
Ian had covered Folk, Country & Bluegrass on Nine Records between 1970-1974 and of those nine, "Matthews Southern Comfort" (1970), " If You Saw Thro' My Eyes" (1971), "Tigers Will Survive".(1972), "Valley Hi" (1973), and "Some Days You Eat the Bear" (1974) are Great Records that met with Good Critical Acclaim and Moderate Sales.
But by 1975 the Record Companies became the Record Industry and the Stakes became HUGE after the Release of "Fleetwood Mac" (1975) sold 7 Million Units. Rock Artists became PRODUCT and CBS Records signed Ian Matthews, and in a Corporate Board Room decided to Market as a POP STAR. And the reasoning behind this thinking was he was capable of BIG Pop Stardom. He had already had a Number One Hit with his Cover of Joni Mitchell's "Woodstock" in 1970 and in 1972 he had a Minor Chart Sucess with the Crystals classic "Do Doo Ron Ron". So the plan was pick a Cover Tune, Over-Arrange it and BINGO, Big Pop Star.
So here we are at "Go For Broke". It hit the shops in 1976 and surprise! Six out of the Ten Songs here are Cover Versions such as "Darkness, Darkness" (Youngbloods, 1969) , "Brown Eyed Girl" ( Van Morrison, 1967), "Just One Look", (Hollies, 1965) and even 'Groovin" ( Young Rascals, 1967). Sometimes it comes out fine (Brown Eyed Girl) Sometimes it doesn't ( Groovin' ). There are lot's of Saxophones, Cheesy Keyboards and String Arrangements featured on "Broke" and to be nice about it the Production is WAAAY over the top. Ian COULD do these Songs better with just his Voice & an Acoustic Guitar, and if you have seen this Great Artist on any Stage you know exactly what I mean.
But what saves "Go For Broke" are the four tunes written by Ian, and Two of them are Great: "Lonely Hunter" and "Rhythm of the West", Here they are Sounding Great.
Well, "Broke" did not set the Music Industry on fire with Big Sales so for "Hit & Run", Producer Nick Venet (Beach Boys) was brought in and it is much Different. Now very much in a Jazz Vein and it is the Better or these Two Recordings. "Hit & Run" contains Six Songs penned by Ian, with "Tigers Will Survive" and "Hit and Run" as the Sandouts. "Times" is a Remake of "Reno, Nevada", and frankly is not so Good, "I Will Not Fade Away" is better, But the Best thing here is the Remake of John Martyn's, "One Day Without You", after it failed to set the Chart's on fire, Ian's time with CBS Records was over.
Lucky for all of us this Set-back, did not Destroy our Hero, Ian continued on with his Music, Switched Labels and got back to Business. He Explored Folk & Country once again and then Punk / Alternative, New Age and back to Pop Music ( Well you get the Idea).
He is Still out there and still Making Great Music, Now he is known as Iain, and Will Survive...

Real Thing.......2006-10-11
I don't where the other reviewer got his ideas from, but this CD is essentially the original Jiani full length "Hit n' Run Lover" LP issued in Europe circa 1981 with a few extra "bonus" remixes thrown in. I had the original vinyl, and at least one of the "Run" mixes present here is indeed the Matra issued original. This makes sense since Unidisc was the parent company of Matra and they have issued what is rightfully called a "reissue". The confusing thing is there were so many mixes of "Run" and "Mercy" issued in the 80's from various companies few people knew what was "original" and what was not. Besides the mixes here, there were some great mixes on Moby Dick of both "Run" and "Mercy" in extended versions, not to mention the housified "Run" mix that appeared on Passion in the UK in the mid 80's. I think the reviewer has this release confused with the Hot Records CD issued in the 90's that did feature Ian Levine re-recorded versions of Jiani's hits (and was pretty bad). Buy this CD for "Mercy" and the original "Hit n' Run Lover". Some other tracks are OK, like "Ask Me," but for the most part they're filler compared to the magnificence of "Run" and "Mercy".
DON'T BUY THIS!.......2006-07-18
If you're looking for "Hit'n'Run Lover, don't buy this. This CD is a ghastly remix by Ian Levine from the mid 90's. The original is such a fantasic, vibrant, uplifting record, how could anyone do this to it?
