Produced by the infamous Dr. Dre with assistance from Mr. Suge Knight, Doggy Style was the first solo outing by Calvin Broadus a.k.a. Snoop Doggy Dog. A true Death Row classic!.......2007-07-05

This is by far Snoop's best project and he's had some pretty good stuff in recent years. This cd takes back in time when i was out there running the streets and doing my thing on the party tip. This album really put Snoop's career over the top.

Great production but lyrics can get monotonous .......2007-05-31

This album could've really been something amazing, but due to the constant repetitive lyrics Doggystyle falls short of it's potential. The production on here is fantastic, and there are some definite classics, but some might find it hard to listen to this album from beginning to end because the lyrics get incredibly monotonous.

Nevertheless, 'Doggystyle' remains a great release and possibly the best Snoop has put out. The funky production is great, and it features some classic tracks (Gin & Juice, Murder Was the Case), though my favorites are Lodi-Dodi (a spaced-out, kick arse track, my personal favorite), That Shiznit and the already mentioned 'Murder was the Case'. There's not a single awful track on here, and it features some great guests as well. Unfortunately, if Snoop would show some emotion once in awhile or rap about something meaningful this could have been something epic. As it stands, 'Doggystyle' is a great hip-hop release that will go down in history for numerous reason. I probably might have made this sound like a negative review, but I am only pointing out the cons over the pros because the vast majority of the reviews are proclaiming this as a flawless classic when it definitely has some problems.

Brings Back Memories.......2007-05-06

This is the first album I ever got. I got it in Junior High School from a friend on cassette tape and back then I was a very casual rap fan unlike now, but I have to say I loved it. I now have the 2001 re-release with 13 tracks. Every song is a winner and definitely helped propel the rap industry into the G-Funk Era in 1993 and 1994. Snoop's drawl definitely complements Dr. Dre's awesome melodic funk. I like this one better than the Chronic, and that one bangs too! One of my favorite jams here is "For All My N----z And B---es" where Tha Dogg Pound and Lady of Rage kills the track with relentless gangbanger flows over a bass heavy mobbin beat and loud whiny synths Dr. Dre popularized in the early to mid 90's. "G'z And Hustlaz" is interesting, for the beat brings in elements of rock n roll guitars and Snoop kills the track. He has one of the best flows in the game on this album. I really can't say much more that what has been already said. "Serial Killa" again brings in that whiny synth and Tha Pound and RBX bring so much heat to the table; all 3 kick such mainy flows right out the mental ward, what a classic. "Gin And Juice," "Doggy Dogg World" are what they are, classic G-Funk that stand the test of time; songs like those were repeatedly looked to for influence on other West Coast and even some southern albums in the mid 90's era. "What's My Name" definitely is bouncy, anthemic, and catchy over a P-Funk type sample, another G-Funk stable. If only rap was as passionate as Snoop, Dre and his guests were in this day of age. Timeless classic is the best way to sum up Doggystyle.

Snoop Will Never Be Tha Same.......2007-03-08

I bought the Doggystyle CD about 3 or 4 weeks ago. I had liked Snoop's recent singles like "Drop it Like it's Hot," and "That's That" but man, his singles from 93 are, there's no other word for it, classic. The singles "Gin and Juice and "Who Am I(What's my Name)" are phenomical. Unlike some rap artists, Snoop Doggy Dogg's work is almost always good rap music whether it's from Doggystyle to Tha Blue Carpet Treatment (I have both CDs) but his music was the best on this album for some reason. It might just be because I like this album the best or because of several differences of his music style.
Pretty much every song on here has amazing funky and West Coast beats unlike a lot of his newer music. Don't get me wrong, I loved Tha Blue Carpet Treatment but most of the beats on it weren't very...funky.
Snoop Dogg can still rhyme but not quite as well as on this CD. Like Jay-Z, Snoop spits out the right words at the right time(as I said on a Reasonable Doubt review). I don't know what it is but he's just isn't the same. Doggystyle is probably one of the most worthy rap albums of being a classic along with Jay-Z's Reasonable Doubt, Dr. Dre's Chronic, and Eminem's Marshall Marthers LP.
As for his other albums... I'm not really writing this to explain them but most were quite good. Though I enjoyed Paid Tha Cost to Be Da Boss and Tha Blue Carpet Treatment, like I said, they're not the same. His next album, Tha Doggfather was a fine follow up but it's just not classic. Snoop Doggy Dogg will probably never be able to match this effort. Most of his fans know that and I think he does too. But I doubt it will be forgotten anytime soon after all of its impact. This is it. Snoop's 4x platinum Death Row Record album. A true classic, not an average modern rap CD that will be out of print in 10 more years.

Doin' it DOGGYSTYLE!.......2007-02-24

This album is a straight up classic from top to bottom. Every song is great including the intro and skits. Standouts include "Gin and Juice", "Tha Shiznit", "Murder Was The Case", "Who Am I"(best track in my opinion), and "Aint No Fun." This was the last album Dre produced the entire album for another artist and Dre's production did not disappoint. Dre took a whole lotta samples to create a G Funk masterpiece.This album was Snoop's so i gotta give credit where credit is due. On this album, he was young, hungry, and his voice sounded so smooth and on point which perfectly meshed with dre's beats. Snoop brought a whole new flow, look, and attitude to being a rapper. He's so different than any other rapper in the game and that's why I'm a fan. All guests on the album hold their own especially Kurupt sort of stealing snoop's spotlight on a couple songs. I think Tha Dogg Pound should always be the most heavily used guets on Snoop's albums because they got alotta talent and them w/ Snoop create the ultimate Dogged out team. I constantly listen to this album over and over and never get tired of it. I just wish the songs "Doggystyle" ft. George Clinton, "Tha Next Episode" ft. Dr. Dre, "Gz Up Hoes Down", and "Playing for Keeps" ft. the Convicts were included because each one is produced by Dre and each one is hot. i understand they wanted to keep the album short and sweet and that's why these tracks were not included, but they would make this album even crazier...imagine that? Death Row to this day still hasn't released these songs so i'm getting tired of waiting. This was Snoop in his prime although I also like Tha Doggfather, Tha Blue Carpet Treatment, Tha Last Meal, and a select few from "Da Game is to be sold not to be told" and "No Limit Top Dogg" but they still don't compare to "Doggystyle." His stuff with the Eastsidaz are also solid. People give Snoop a lot of criticism when they only hear his commercial stuff nowadays. Snoop changes his style up for every album and i understand that and i'm still a fan. All y'all Snoop Doggy Dogg haters need to slow up. Anywayz,I would like to see snoops last album with dre production on every song but this is highly unlikely but would be crazy. If not, we always have DOGGYSTYLE...my favorite rap album of all time. Other West Coast classics are Ice Cube "Amerikkkaz most wanted" and "Death Certificate", Mack 10's self titled album, WC-"Curb Servin", Dr. Dre "The Chronic", MC Ren "Kizz My Black AZZ" and "Shock of the hour", Bad Azz "Word on tha Street", Tha Dogg Pound "Dogg Food", Eazy E "Its On-187um killa", and so many others. West Coast rap all night betta yet foe life! and i'm out ssssssssssee ya......

1989's Straight Outta Compton, by Dre's previous outfit N.W.A., may have shined the public spotlight on the genre, but The Chronic legitimized it. If you've listened to this, you'll know that the the subject matter is basically generic gangsta rap. I'll give you that there's some pure garbage gangsta rap out there (i think you know which people i'm talking aboutt here) However when its done right it can be amazing, and this classic proves that.

It's not my favourite of Death Row's classic era (All Eyez On Me) but definitely worth a listen. The skits are actually funny with some amazing g funk (which was the sub genre this album started) and some very catchy rhymes from all the Deathrow family, (Snoop, Tha Pound, Lady Of Rage)

The standouts for me are Nuthin But A G Thang of course), Lil Ghetto Boy (my personal favourite), Deez Nuuutz, Stranded On Death Row (fantastic compilation) and Dre Day (hilarious!)

A CLASSIC.......2007-04-04

This is one of the best CDs ever recorded. Taking genre out and just rating CDs for their quality, from start to finish this is one of the greatest ever. The music under the lyrics, the flow, the groove, the lyrics, the production. A masterpiece.

The Chronic.......2007-02-24

This is one of those albums that you will buy several times throughout your lifetime. I, myself, have bought this 4 or 5 times, twice when it was out on tape. I think Dr. Dre is one of the most intricate producers in hip hop. His production has been responsible for the igniting the careers of some of hip hop's finest. It's extremely accessible, yet still incredibly complex. His rapping is better than most of today's rappers. He has a deep, sort of laid back kind of flow. All of his lyrics are on point as well. This is stuff you can party to, as well as jam to by yourself. I understand that this record has been out for quite some time. I remember when it was released, long ago, I had to keep it hidden from my parents. I just feel it's my duty to encourage the new generation of hip hop heads to go back to their roots and see where a lot of the greats came from. Highly recommended.

i'd have to say that this is one of my favorite 2Pac albums he comes with straight fire on this album his lyrics are deep and dark this album has some great 2Pac hits me and my girlfriend to live and die in l.a hail mary toss it up & a great diss track against all odds if your a fan of hip/hop cop this album

Dont get me wrong. I love All Eyez On Me. It was one of the best albums of 96 but it was missing the political side of Pac. The conscious side. On this album you get Pac's anger at other rappers but you also get some insight like White Man's World, Blasphemy and Krazy. Its unfortunate to hear the diss tracks like Bomb First and Against All Odds get more mention over White Man's World and Krazy but I understand where most people's heads are at. Standout tracks: BOMB FIRST, HAIL MARY, TOSS IT UP, TO LIVE AND DIE IN LA, BLASPHEMY, LIFE AS AN OUTLAW, KRAZY, WHITE MAN,S WORLD, ME AND MY GIRLFRIEND and AGAINST ALL ODDS. Filler: I never felt Just Like Daddy. Bottom Line: In 96, Pac droppped to classics, All Eyez On Me and The Don Killuminati. Pac's rhymes were great, the production was different but good. All in all it was a great album.

Perfect way to end Pac's career.......2007-04-10

It does seem more of a compilation than an album to me. It basically has songs for everything he had done in his career so far, for introspective we have "Krazy" and "Hold Ya Head", for political we have "White Man'z World", for outlaw we have "Life Of An Outlaw, for diss songs we have "Bomb First" and "Against All Odds" and so on. All in all its a classic album though ranks as my third favourite (behind Me Against The World and All Eyez on Me) The production shines once again and Pac never dissapoints. Highly recommended to all Pac fans who don't already own this

Let me start by saying I've never listened to Steamroller before picking this up. I am a big fan of Halloween and have quite a collection of music/sound fx so naturally, this was a must buy when I saw it.
Strictly from a Halloween fan's point of view, I can't recommend this except maybe for a kids party. The synth on the tracks really removes any spookiness from the tunes and makes them fall short of Halloween-worthiness. Tocatta and Hall of the Mountain King are some of my absolute favorite classical pieces and here they are given a royal treatment...if they were produced on a Commodore 64, or Casio keyboard for you younger folk.
The FX disc isn't horrible, but it's below the average generic sound fx you find in the bargain bin. Again, not much scary except for the fact that I spent money on this.
If possible, check it out before you buy.

An interest take on the usual.......2005-11-06

I wasn't sure what I'd think of this from reading other reviews, but I really did like it. I'm not really familiar with Mannheim's other stuff (but if the rest of the Autumn cd is anything like Harvest Dance, I'm looking forward to getting it), so I didn't have any preconceived ideas. I have a lot of the classical pieces on other cds, but I like the different twist given to them here. And I did like the sound effect cd. Nicely spooky (I have enough other sound effects cds with screaming and muching ghouls, etc).

Could have been great but . . ........2004-10-15

As a big Steamroller fan, perhaps my hopes were set a little too high. I envisioned more original music (perhaps a more scarier vibe than the silly one this CD has to it) and maybe a few covered tunes. Chips originals (from the Fresh Aire series)found on this CD outshine the weak efforts put forth on the covered and rearranged tracks. The sound effects disc sets a great(and creepy)mood, that should had been followed through with some new and equally scary compositions.

If you're a die hard Mannheim fan (as in 'I just have to own everything Chip puts out') I say go for it. But otherwise spend your Halloween money elsewhere. Overall this is a forced and lazy effort.

It's not That bad..........2004-06-14

It's not scary. There, you have it, that's what it all boils down to. With a creepy cover like that, you'd think it would be terrifying! It's not, but it's not bad, either!

A lot of the songs sound kind of like low-budget MIDI tunes that are sometimes embedded in websites.. but I think that might have been what the Steamroller was going for. Kind of like a broken Music Box? Anyway, only a few sound low budget, the rest sound good, even a few are a little "eerie" but at the same time, there's a lot that pretty much remind me of something you would hear come out of sesame street toy. The sound effects are great, though.

There's a few songs that are bad. there's a few that are "babyish" but there's also Lots that really capture the mood of halloween and some of it's eerieness. I can't really recommend it for Halloween itself (maybe if you already have every halloween cd already) but I think any Chip Davis fan should give it a listen.

Tries to please everyone.......2004-06-02

One of the neat things about the holiday of Halloween is that it is so versatile. Where Christmas has a very straightforward story (Santa or Jesus, take your pick), Halloween can be many things. Some people see it as a sort of Mardi Gras atmosphere, where any kind of costumed theme is suitable. Others see it as a dark holiday, only suited gothic castles, zombies, and monsters. Still others celebrate it in the style of gory slasher movies, complete with deranged serial killers and buckets of blood. And then there is the non-scary childrens Halloween, where the ghosts are cute and jack-o-lanterns all have goofy grins.

This CD covers all these aspects of Halloween, which virtually garantees that no one will like every song. However, I would suggest that you pick and choose the tracks you like from the CD, as part of your overall Halloween soundtrack. You will probably find at least several tracks you like. And of you like Mannheim Steamroller, you will like most of them.

Interesting Sophomore Album.......2007-05-06

In late 1996 Snoop finally releases his 2nd album, Tha Doggfather, after beating a murder rap. Unfortunately, this album was slept on compared to 1993's Doggystyle. You hear much more about Doggystyle than this. Now, this one does not touch Doggystyle, but you need to give it a chance. Some of the album will have to grow on you as it did on me, but it does have some classic joints. Daz, DJ Pooh, LT Hutton, Soopafly, Arkim and Flair, Mark Freeman, Dave Aron, and Sam Sneed all create some interesting beats. My favorite is "Up Jump Tha Boogie" where Snoop gets it crunk over a bouncy DJ Pooh lowrider beat and a talk box. Pooh's beat on "Snoop Bounce" uses a Zapp sample and is perfect for the house party. There is some good old G-Funk on tracks like "2001" and the funny and raunchy "Groupie" with Warren G, Dogg Pound, Nate Dogg, and Gap Band's Charlie Wilson. The beat is melodic and laidback courtesy of Daz. The song reminds me of a part 2 of "Ain't No Fun (If The Homies Can't Have None)." "Tha Doggfather" has more of a mainstream appeal but is hot with a bouncy party beat and Charlie Wilson singing the hook. There are some odd selections here though. The beat is out of place and wack on "(O.J.) Wake Up;" it samples a Run DMC beat, but it does not feel right here though; I just cannot get into it. "Gold Rush" has a weird beat, sort of like a Wild West theme, but it is likeable however after a few listens. "Doggyland" is hot. It has a nice, twangy G-Funk beat and is upbeat, definitely one of Snoop's best songs perfectly laidback and fits his lyrical style perfectly. "You Thought" is a Soopafly banger, with Soopafly, Snoop and Too Short trading pimped out verses over a Zoot Suit Riot old-school style beat. Definitely an album worth checking out. Give it a chance.

This is like a funkier version of Doggystyle. On this album Snoop showed that he could make a dope record without Dre too. There's not a bad track on it.

The phenom Snoop that killed verses on The Chronic, Doggystyle and Dogg Food is no where to be found on here. The whole vibe is gone. Without Dre by his side, Snoop was half a MC. It would be years before Snoop showed any resemblance to his old self.

No Doctor And It's Still All Good {4 Stars}.......2007-01-27

Expectations from fans and the general public can be a deadly thing to a rappers career. With his second release, a lot of people expected the second coming of Doggstyle. But that was an unfair expectation -- I mean, with Dr. Dre (the producer of his classic debut) being gone from Death Row and all. The production is done by committee on this album by DJ Pooh (pictured in the album credits), Soopafly, and Daz. Arkim & Flair, L.T., Sam Sneed, and Snoop himself all contribute a track. So, naturally, the sound on this album is different from his debut. It's not an easy job to fill the good doctor's shoes, but I'd have to say that Pooh, Soopafly, and Daz do an admirable job handling this album. The sound still reeks of Cali funk while Snoop rhymed on beat (something he almost never does nowadays).

With that being said, there is very little skip material on this joint. "Snoop Bounce" and "(Tear 'em Off) Me & My Doggz" suffer from drowsy production. The skits could've been left off too. Some were good, some were corny. Aside from those hiccups, the album is pretty good.

Tha Doggfather is good follow up to Doggystyle. It doesn't have many weak spots and the production bangs nonstop. For those of you that just got into Snoop within the last two or three years, you should grab this if you want to know what Snoop sounded like when he was still putting some effort into his releases. This is probably Snoop's second best album. Anyone that tells you this album is disappointing is sorely mistaken. I recommend adding this album to your collection.

Snoop Dogg's Best Album.......2006-10-21

His first album Doggystyle, stank. It was so purverted and violent that it seemed like the sort of thing that could make any red blooded person want to vomit. But with his second album he changed his ways and did a really good job. It shows that he was tired of mindless gangbanging street lyrics and wanted to come back as a more matured person. He was able to tell stories about his life in the ghetto in a a lot more matured way which was great. I love nearly all the tracks, well I really mean all the real tracks and I don't like the skits. But probably my favourites are Doggfather, Downtown Assassins, Gold Rush, Snoop's Upside Ya Head, Vapors and Blueberry. Might I also add the production was great too, the beats were superb. If you liked this than I would also recommend from Snoop Dogg Tha Last Meal and Paid tha Cost To Be Da Boss. Stay away from Doggystyle because it truly is horrible.

Marion "Suge" Knight's controversial Death Row records have had an undeniable impact on hip-hop culture. Death Row's Greatest Hits features an impressive dosage of funkdafied classics. Significantly, many of the tracks are taken from two of the best LPs ever released by the label, namely Dre's The Chronic (on which Snoop made his debut appearance) and Snoop's Doggystyle. Cuts like "Lil Ghetto Boy," "Nuthin' But a G Thang," "Gin 'n' Juice," "Doggy Dogg World," and "Lodi Dodi" all sound as fresh today as they did several years ago. I have a lot to say! First of all, all of your reviews have been talking about why All eyez On Me, Doggfather, and Makaveli songs aren't on here. You have to understand that in this compilation was made in 1996, and all of those albums yall have been talking about were made in 1996. Most times, greatest hits albums do not include songs that were JUST released. That's why the songs weren't on there. Second of all, Deep Cover wouldn't be on here becuase that was made a few months before Death Row (the deep cover soundtrack was not on Death Row).

But anyway, the album was tight with good hits on the first disc(i don't have to indentify them you.) But there ARE some missing hits. First of all, in THE CHRONIC, where is the orignal version of Dre Day and Let Me Ride? Those were good tracks, and besides, the remixes SUCK. In DOGGYSTYLE, were is the original made Murder was the case? It was better than the remix. And where is Serial Killa, the D.O.C, Snoop Dogg, RBX, and Dogg Pound collaboration? In ABOVE THE RIM, where is Regulate, and Big Pimpin'? Those where good tracks. In MURDER WAS THE CASE, U Better Recognize, Dollaz and Sense, and 21 Jump Street are missing (21 JUmp Street is obviously a boring and ordinary track to everybody else, but I like the beat and tune.)IN DOGG FOOD, there are no tracks. WHAT THE HECK! Dogg Food was tight! They should have put Cyco- Lic-No, Smooth, Let's Play House, and New York, New York on there. And California Love, the orginal version should have been there, because that was made in 1995, which is not too close to the Death Row's GH release date. So if all the songs I said that should have been added were added, there would have been no space for stupid remixes, and tupac songs that were not under DEath Row. Death Row's "Greatest" is a bit of a mixed bag!.......2004-07-12

This two-disc compilation of Death Row's best hit records is actually somewhat of a mixed bag as outside of its early hits from the first two solo releases (Dr. Dre's "The Chronic" and Snoop Doggy Dogg's "Doggystyle"), it takes weird directions in its choices. There is the Ice Cube classic, "No Vasoline" which disses N.W.A. and was recorded before Death Row was even a label. Only two of the seven 2Pac tracks that are included here were actually recorded during his Death Row days. The rest are actually early Pac recordings from his Interscope days (though "Pour Out A Little Liquor" was released on Death Row's "Above The Rim" soundtrack.) A good portion of disc 2 is dedicated to remixes of classic Death Row songs that are included on disc 1. Only the "Let Me Ride" remix seems to be worth the space. The original "Let Me Ride" is nowhere to be found nor is the original "Dre Day". The remix of the latter features vocals from Jewell over the old beat with none of Dre or Snoop's original lyrics. In fact, neither contributed to it at all. The never-before-released "Who Been There, Done That" by J. Flexx is the first of many disses that Death Row would release attacking former producer, Dr. Dre. They would have been better off leaving it off of a "greatest hits" album as its inclusion seems innappropriate. The other brand new song, Daz's "Me In Your World" is a pretty good addition though it doesn't make up for the lack of Dogg Pound classics that didn't make the cut. There are no songs from "Dogg Food" or "All Eyez On Me" to be found here. "Greatest Hits" is a must-buy for the die-hard Death Row fans but it would have been good if they included more of their classics ("Regulate", "Deep Cover") as well as lost songs and rare B-sides such as 2Pac's "Pain", Dogg Pound's "Just Doggin", and the Dr. Dre B-side "Sippin' On Tanqueray and Puffin' On Blunts" as opposed to a number of well-known hits that their label didn't even produce. The inclusion of "Keep Their Heads Ringin" and "Hit Em' Up" were pretty good selections but for the most part, if you own their first few releases, you probably won't find anything worth buying in this Death Row "best of" collection.

One wonders who troublesome Death Row kingpin Suge Knight is addressing in the liners to the 2 CD Death Row Greatest Hits package when he notes: "Rap is a style wherein a combination of talking, as well as singing, is set to hip-hop music." Uh, given that the booklet also features sales figures for assorted DR smashes (five million for Snoop Doggy Dogg's Doggystyle, four million for Dr. Dre's The Chronic, six million for 2Pac's All Eyez on Me, and so forth), it would seem that more than a few folks are aware of this thing Suge calls "rap." Musically, maybe the "N," "B," "M," and "F" words aren't your thing, but when the history of '90s pop music is written, Death Row will warrant a chapter. And, as anthologies go, this one's murderous. --Steven Stolder

If you really want to have Death Row's Greatest hits, you jsut need to go out and pick up "The Chronic", "DoggyStyle", & "All Eyez on Me". That's Deathrows greatest...No questions asked!

This is a strong compilation of West Coast rap! .......2004-09-20

Even though Death Row Records is not as dominant as it once was, you have to commend them for making challenging West Coast rap hits. This greatest hits album proves that and Disc 1 has all those massive hits by Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, 2Pac, Dogg Pound and some other artists on that label. The street themes, while shocking and violent in most parts, are understandable in these songs. You have been warned, so be cautious when you hear this album. Disc 2 is good too, but not as strong as Disc 1. They wanted to get that album out for the holiday season in 1996, so they packed a lot of songs on it. The shocker is 2Pac's dissing of Mobb Deep and Notorious B.I.G. on Hit 'em Up. This song wasn't necessary and 2Pac's anger is painfully obvious in that song. But the gangsta sounds and live feel of most songs here are what drive this collection. Althought most of the former artists left the label, I feel that Death Row can rebound if they can find a good artist who has that "it" factor for their label. A very sprawling and danceable collection of West Coast rap in their highest early '90s glory!!!!

This CD would be 5 stars except what the hell are these old 2Pac songs doing on here? Keep Ya Head Up, Me Against the World, I Get Around, and Dear Mama are great songs but they are not Death Row songs. What idiot decided to add these on here? The only Death Row 2Pac song on here is Hit Em Up. Why didn't they add 2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted, California Love, and Hail Mary, etc. instead? The four 2Pac songs on here aren't anything like the other songs and are not Death Row so it makes no sense to include them, not to mention No Vaseline by Ice Cube, which I have no idea why it was included. All the other songs are great, I just wish they wouldn't make stupid decisions to add songs that have nothing to do with the label. I am famialiar with all these songs but I will not buy this album. They should release a correct Death Row's Greatest Hits. I am really bothered by the inclusion of these non-Death Row 2Pac songs and I can't think of any reason why they were included. Whoever decided to put them on must be smoking crack.

The logistics of having legendary, multi-platinum artists like Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Tupac and other veteran West Coast acts under the same roof nowadays is mind numbing. Before money, egos, and beefs got in the way, all these MCs called Death Row Records home. From 1992 to 1996, Suge Knight's label was the most consistent selling label in rap- all their releases went at least platinum until 1996's Christmas on Death Row. To celebrate the success of those glory years, we have Death Row Greatest Hits, a 2-CD package of classic West Coast anthems.

The first disc is by far the stronger of the two, as it includes tracks from the classic releases The Chronic and Doggystyle. Songs like "Nuthin But A G Thang," "Gin and Juice" and "Ain't No Fun" are obvious choices for inclusion. However, there are some strange surprises, like Ice Cube's "No Vaseline," a classic battle track despite the fact that Cube was never on Death Row. Although Tupac was signed to Tha Row in 1995, all of his appearances on Disc 1 come from his early career. With the vast catalog Suge Knight had to choose from, its bizarre that he decided to acquire the rights to these songs for this release. Still, the album is no worse for that fact. Despite leaning a bit too heavily on The Chronic and Doggystyle, Disc 1 comes correct with "Afro Puffs," the Lady of Rage's moment of glory. For anyone who forgot, Rage has skills and flavor to spare on the Dr. Dre-produced track:

Instead of cointinuing Death Row's legacy chronologically on Disc 2, Suge opts instead to pack it with remixes of songs on Disc 1. All "Gin and Juice (Remix)" and "Lil Ghetto Boy (Remix)" do is remind the listener of the original's superiority. The remix to Tupac's "I Get Around" is horrible, laced with saxophone straight from adult contemporary radio. The few R&B songs that Death Row ever did are represented in the form of Jodeci's "Come Up to My Room" and Danny Boy's "Come When I Call." Disc 2 is a mixed bag in the end: the weak Dr. Dre-diss "Who Been There, Who Done That" (performed by J-Flex) is balanced by "Hit Em Up." The disc also gives Dat Nigga Daz a chance to shine producing the hard funk of "Me In Your World" and the breezy, DJ Quik-esque "Let Me Ride (Remix)."

While Death Row Greatest Hits has no shortage of classic songs, when you consider the label's track record and huge catalog of hits, this package is slightly underwhelming. Where is "Regulate," "Dollaz and Sense" and "California Love"? Tupac's All Eyez on Me became the label's biggest hit ever, but it is completely absent here. But considering Death Row's refusal to progress into the future (where is Crooked I, by the way?), Greatest Hits is steeply rooted in its glorious past.

DEATHROW WAS THE THANG FOR A MINUTE UNTIL PAC DIED AND SUGE WAS INCARCERRATED ANYWAY THESE MUGS RULED THE WEST COAST RAP SCENE AND DR. DRE WAS A GENIUS FOR CREATING THE G FUNK SOUND AND INTRODUCING THE WORLD TO ACTS LIKE SNOOP DOGG, NATE DOGG, RBX, DAZ, KURUPT, WARRENG, JEWELL, AND THE LADY OF RAGE.

MUCH SUCESS TO YA'LL ALL OF YOU PUT IN MUCH WORK AND THE DEATHROW LEGACY IS FAR FROM FORGOTTEN.

Filler: Im back(sucked on Dysfunktional Family Soundtrack and it sucks now), Jealousy(wack plus MOP's verses were off big time), Hustlin(wack cipher), Can you feel it(wack club record that falls short) etc. Bottom Line: We are going to have to come to grips with the fact that Kurupt hasnt been the same since he left Deathrow and changed his style around. He went back to Deathrow but he still has the same schlocky rap style he had out of the record company. Songs like Speak on it and Tha Past would be good but its ruined by his retarded flow. Beware of any album that comes out of Deathrow nowadays! One last note: You f****n with the best is also on Bang Em and Domination's album God Giveth and God Taketh Away. Pick that album up its not a disappointment like this one.

Ok but not that good.......2006-06-21

Ok album. Only some hot songs on here. Worth the money tho. Best songs are Calico, Throwback Music, Anarchy 87, and Homeboys. Rest of tracks are str8 and some are wack. Not as good as dpg's Dogg Food tho.

Kurupt Can Do Better {3 Stars}.......2006-06-17

Kurupt's first studio release in four years seems sort of unpolished and rushed. The fact that this album was pushed back for three of those years comes through on some of the songs as they sound outdated with their generic rhythms and dated topics. The production is distinctly west coast and allows Kurupt to spew his trademark venom in vintage west coast fashion. Some of the songs start to sound the same toward the middle of the album and other songs tackle generic topics like "beef". That can make things seem dry and boring. Guest appearances include Eastwood, Young Tone, Roscoe, The Dayton Family, Spider Loc, Big Tri, Domination, and Tupac.

my favorite album right now.......2006-04-04

i didn't like this album that much when i first got it but i gave it a chance and i grew to love it. it's almost all good. great combination of old-school-gangsta-death-row-sound, unexpected lyrics, easy-listening-2pac-type flows. give it a try.

i wish they promoted it. i wanted to see this do well. death row could have had a classic with a little promotion.

Kurupt has come across many odds and ends to deliver this album to the shelves- arguably, a typical Death Row Records trademark. However, after finally doing so, Kurupt brings a much needed album and brings his game status with him.

It's obvious. Alot on his mind... Regrouping to his old label, reclusiveness to industry, hostility amongst former artists...
Moreover, "Against the Grain" album wasn't even to be released under Kurupt's approval! ....... Distribution handling the final tracks wasn't to his tastefulness.

With all of this on the line, I'd have to say that Kurupt has overcome many odds to bring out a delayed album that spits fire left and right. An aggressive, subfound Kurupt has answered some of his own vengeance overall and even aknowledges his status with a new, decayed Death Row Records.

Highlights:
03. ANARCHY '87- A strong and feelful track! Non-the-less far from being a typical rap track. Pace is up and down with unpredictable production from Mark Sparks.

04. THROWBACK BACK MUZIC '86- Calmed track but the street talk is dominating! Old school meets new school. If Death Row was to ever have kept its jem with the original line up, a new age Death Row sound would be just this...

07. CAN U FEEL IT- Glam and style was always the indredient for Tha Row. Kurupt fulfills that here and some. Radio chorus with the mean flows.

08. SLIDE N SLIDE OUT- Overwhelming! Blacthoven pushes the limits with crisp beats while Kurupt follows up with mic shredding! Fastpaced and executed nicely here as Eastwood, Big Tri & Young Tone assists on 3 pointers. Album highlight!

09. I'M BACK- Forceful delivery from Kurupt. Taken from the Dysfuntional Family sessions, this one is a different take on matters but done well. Impressive and a growing track.

A few more songs speak volumes for this recording. With all the odds in mind, I'd say that this is a great album for the archives. I feared how Death Row would personally adjust to Kurupt... - sound old school production or bring in some new while demanding the old fire from Big K?

Of course, Dat Nigga Daz would sound quite nice accomidating Kurupt Young Gotti. And so would Snoop, Nate, Warren G and so on. But it still holds nice on it's own. My personal mindput is really a 3 1/2 stars on this but a plain 3 would underappreciate it's worth. Speaking of lineup, there were some hits and misses on the featured artists. However, there weren't that many to begin with. That's impressive enough for this day in age where 20 tracks feature 60 artists....

Overall, a bold album from Kurupt. A good step for Death Row, finally- whom can only release soundtracks and compilations lately. The ingredients are still flowing in the West. For "Against the Grain" we get a Kurupt from "Dogg Pound Gangstaz" track of Above the Rim days. Strong effort but still needing Kurupt the Kingpin back!

Chuck D of Public Enemy once prophesized that if artists didn't own their masters (tapes), the masters will own the artists. Well, hip-hop's fave gangster CEO Suge Knight owns most of his former high-profile label mates' master tapes and continues to issue collections of dated works by Tha Dogg Pound, Dr. Dre, and now Snoop. Originally entitled Dead Man Walking to scare the willies out of Snoop, this release comes with a big fat greasy caveat emptor. Sure, this is a ghetto fab collection of the Doggfather's finest pre-No Limit and Doggystyle Records moments dating back to his brilliant cover of Biz Markie's "Vapors" on Tha Doggfather album. That said, Snoop wants nothing to do with this release because he won't receive any proceeds from it and has urged his fans not to buy it. Contractual shenanigans aside, this release is off the hook and contains most of Snoop's finest career headbangers, from "Gin and Juice" to "Who Am I (What's My Name)." Not That Great.......2006-05-30

Now this is by far the worst greatest hits I've ever seen. First off Suge Knight is stealing money off Snoop by realeasing stuff like this. Most of the unreleased songs shouldn't have seen the light of day, well I like Eastside Party and Midnight Love but the rest are totally wack. It also is missing some of the hits like Snoop's Upside Ya Head, Dre Day, 2 Of Amerikaz Most Wanted, Wanted Dead Or Alive, Tha Doggfather and Lil Ghetto Boy. I suppose Suge is planning to come back with a volume 2 greatest hits with a whole lot more crappy unreleased tracks. They could have beefed up Dead Man Walkin but Suge is gonna get as much money off Snoop as he can. It does have really good classics but this is not Greatest Hits seeing half of them are unreleased and some classics are omitted.

Anyway my ratings for the songs are
1. Nuthin But A G Thang 10/10 Classic with Dr Dre, great beats
2. Head Doctor 9/10 One of the best tracks from Dead Man Walkin
3. Gin And Juice 10/10 Classic, my favourite famous song from Doggystyle
4. Eastside Party 10/10 Snoop in all verses and Nate Dogg in the chorus, this was worth releasing
5. Murder Was The Case Remix 10/10 I'm not sure which I like better, this or the original version. Their both great
6. Ain't No Fun (If The Homies Can't Have None) 9.5/10 Even though some of the lyrics are a bit purverted its still great with bangin beats
7. Doggfather Remix 6/10 Don't like this, it has no business being on here and Tha Doggfather original version should be on here instead
8. Midnight Love 10/10 Another unreleased that was definitely worth releasing. My favourite unreleased track with Eastside Party being my second
9. Eastside 6/10 I don't think that this song was meant to ever be released
10. Who Am I? (What's My Name?) 10/10 Classic, my second favourite famous song from Doggystyle
11. Doggy Dogg World 10/10 My third favourite famous song from Doggystyle, the beats are good and relaxing
12. Too High (Poly High) 7/10 Another song that shouldn't have seen the light of day
13. Vapors 10/10 Bangin beats, solo where Snoop talks about the lives of all the members of Tha Dogg Pound
14. Usual Suspects 8/10 This songs alright, but its still not top quality
15. Keep It Real 1/10 Hate this song, definitely shouldn't have been released. Snoop doesn't even have one verse on this
16. Snoop Bounce Roc N Roll Remix 5/10 This song is wack! Where's Snoop Bounce original version.

Half and half.......2006-03-06

Includes 16 songs of which I liked 8: These are "Nuthin' but a 'G' thang", "Head doctor", "Gin and juice", "Eastside party", "Ain't no fun", "Midnight love", "Who I am" and "Doggy dogg world" These are. I don't care about the rest, because Snoop isn't my favorite rapper. Anyways he's a gifted man and I think he could do better things.

This album was released by former Death Row Records CEO Suge Knight without the consent of Snoop Dogg himself. It contains all the hit singles from Snoop's 2 Death Row albums: "Doggystyle" and "The Doggfather". Included are the G-funk era classics like "Nuthing But A G Thang" (originally from Dr. Dre's "The Chronic"), "Murder Was The Case (Remix)", "Ain't No Fun" and of course, "Gin & Juice", "Doggy Dogg World" and "Who Am I (What's My Name)". In order to fill out the album, many previously unreleased vault recordings are also included. The best of these are Timbaland's remix of "Doggfather", the slinky late-night romp "Midnight Love" and the summer anthem "Too High (Poly High)". Some of the other vault recordings sound dated, and pale in comparison to the classics, making the album sound rather inconsistent in quality. Nonetheless, if you are looking for all of Snoop's Death Row era hits on one disc, this is probably the best sampler for you. Overall, this is a pretty good "Best Of" from Snoop, considering he has switched labels several times, and it is near impossible to get a comprehensive compilation of his music anywhere. RECOMMENDED for Snoop's casual fans, as well as hardcore fans who want to get their hands on a few good remixes.

good album But could have been better.......2005-01-05

This is a really good album but for a greatist hits It's a little bit disapointing especialy considering that it's made by Snoop Dogg who is a West Coast legend. Although this album isn't as good as it should be it still has some classic songs like "murder was the case", "It aint no fun", "Gin and Juice", "Who am i(whats my name)" and of course "nuthin but a G thang". But Unfortunately most of the other songs on the album dont live up to those songs I just mentioned. The main reason why this album isn't as good as it should be is because That death row records only had 2 albums by Snoop to use to create his greatist hits. This album is worth gettin but your probably better of just buying "Tha Dogg"
