Customer Reviews:
This is TSOL.......2006-07-06
[...]
That being said, this is one of if not the best TSOL albums, and arguably the best. It's serious rock/punk (less punk at this stage and more rock). The vocals are tight and so too for the instrumentation. I think if these specific members could have held it together they would have launched into super stardom.
I was in Long Beach, CA when these guys hit the scene. That was 1981 when their first album, called the "Black" LP came out. Yeah, they were hot, underrated, but hot. There are four TSOL albums you need which will give you their very best work: The first album, which was an LP, Dance With Me (All original members, and very death/punk like), Change Today?, and Beneath the Shadows. Beneath is a very different sound, and introduces the piano. These four albums will blow you away with their progression towards an ever better and diversely talented band. TSOL was a very talented bunch of guys and very underrated. Plus, they never really could get it together for the mass market, which is why we have a cult classic here.
After I moved from Long Beach back to Bakersfield (Hell Hole), CA, we watched them play in Bako and then they came back to my friend's house and stayed the night. They were a cool group and smart, insightful bunch of people. That's when I was around 23. I'm 44 now, and I'll never forget those TSOL guys.
Check those 4 out and peace.
This is not the real TSOL........1999-09-17
This album was made with a new TSOL lineup following the departure of their legendary vocalist Jack Grisham. This new version of TSOL eventually deteriorated into a bad glam-metal band, and while this album isn't as bad as later efforts, it's still pretty suck-o. Stick with the real TSOL: "Dance With Me", "Beneath The Shadows", and their self-titled debut.
What Skating In the eighties was about.......1998-10-30
Thesearee guys that made the sound track to an early powell perelta skate flick. This is that CD. This CD has everthing that NOW music all about. Its hard, and to the piont. It carries you and slams you. Transition band at its best.
Classic Old style skater-punk. Not heavy metal sounding........1998-07-29
This album has a classic punk sound and is recomended for anyone who likes the older punk without the loud screaming and annoying heavy metal sound. I think that TSOL changed after this album. The sound is similar to the Adicts, if you are familiar with them.

Customer Reviews:
one for the media player library.......2006-10-19
first, i consider myself a pretty hefty TSOL fan. i own a cd and vinyl of Dance With Me, cds of every other Jack Grisham album, the excellent revenge cd, a TSOL hoodie, a TSOL t-shirt, and all of the the TSOL-esque Joykiller albums. the only thing i really havent done is see them live.
now, on to this album. first, it is NOT joe wood i hate(as i adore the revenge album) but the fact that this album just sort of choppily hits you. it is a pretty sinking/stale follow-up to the excellent mellon-collie beneath the shadows, but they have much worse. i really dont like this album too too much and it saddens me to think any TSOL album is average, but strange love and hit and run are far worse. the first 5 songs are very generous in quality, but like another reviewer stated, the rest is pretty much bollocks. red shadows and flowers by the door are definately the best songs on here! blackmagic is also pretty nice, but other than that, the album drags on with little excitement.
bottom line, TSOL first timers, stick with disappear, tsol/weatherted statues, and dance with me(if you can find it)
Great Stuff.......2006-10-07
I bought this album in the 1980s, and it rarely left my turntable. Joe Wood has a great voice (kind of a cross between Morrison and Idol with a little more bluesy feel - matter of fact, while setting up in a small club in Fullerton, Joe played a solo version of The End and that was a treat). Ron Emory has always had a unique guitar sound, and that continues here. Mitch Dean hits the skins with emotion, and Mike Roche plays killer bass lines.
The album has some dark tunes and mixes in some politics about conforming and impact of war (American Zone). In Time is reminiscent of the older TSOL because Ron sings it, and it is faster than the other songs. He does at least one song on each album. The add on tunes are add ons - they are cool to have, but like another reviewer said they did not really fit with the album. Who's complaining? I did hear these add on songs live in LA and OC clubs in the early to mid 1980s, and I liked them much better live. They had this other live song that would have been interesting to hear recorded about the homeless in LA - it was a reggae song. Pretty cool.
I had the early TSOL albums, and I loved them - still do. There are a lot of people out there who complain that this is not the old TSOL, or called it the new TSOL. Either way, who cares. Music is music. I pretty much purchased all the cds of each lineup of TSOL (some of the later stuff got a little too glam though). I guess I was not the only one who was into this band because some guy was painting the house I was renting a room in, and he ended up stealing all my TSOL cds. Those were the only ones he took (and I have a bunch of classic punk stuff), so I thought that was a nice compliment to the band. I wish I could have caught him though. I ended up repurchasing most of the their cds anyway (as well as the stuff the reformed band put out - Disappear and Divided We Stand) because my music collection would be severely lacking without TSOL.
Thanks to the reviewer who told us where to find stuff on Joe Wood. His cd is blues/rock and it is great.
Opened my eyes to music beyond 3-chord punk..........2005-04-20
I had become a one-dimensional punk monster in the early eighties...Then along came Change Today? As much as I loved the classic TSOL...The new singer/sound sucked me in. The bass-lines haunt me even today...I have the vinyl version still in it's plastic. No one can touch it. I bought the bonus track CD last year. All the originals sound great digitized. I'm not such a big fan of the bonus tracks though. They seem to have been pasted on, and don't really follow the flow of the original album. Cool if you're into collecting rarities I guess.
Buy this disc!
4 cool tunes out of 10 ...the rest garbage.......2004-01-19
I had never even heard of True Sounds Of Liberty prior to seeing them live at a small Miami club (Griff's?) in 1984. They were touring in support of "Change Today?" and they sounded great once I got hammered on beer!...I still have a scar on my arm where something or someone spiked me during a slam session (hell, the whole audience was a "pit" in those early days).
This release marks the debut of Joe Wood's killer vocals, but the guitar player's knowledge was so limited that most of songs are in the same key and even use the exact same chords...his "solos" are so off, I cringe. This band was much more impressive as a creepy live act.
"Red Shadows", "Just Like Me" and "Blackmagic" and the hit single: "Flowers by the Door" are the standouts...the rest are awful and unlistnable.
2 and 1/2 stars...rounded up.
"BAR NONE THE BEST T.S.O.L. ALBUM".......2003-08-05
I REMEMBER HEARING THIS ALBUM BEING PLAYED ON THE TURNTABLE IN MY OLDER BROTHER'S ROOM WHEN I WAS A LITTLE KID. BY THE TIME I WAS A TEENAGER, I HAD FORGOTTEN WHO THE TRUE SOUNDS OF LIBERTY WERE. ABOUT 15 YRS AFTER ITS RELEASE, I FOUND THIS CD IN A WEARHOUSE. I HAVEN'T HEARD ANYTHING NOWADAYS THAT EVEN HOLDS A CANDLE TO "BLACKMAGIC", "RED SHADOWS", OR "IT'S GRAY." THE BEGINNING OF RED SHADOWS REMINDS ME OF SEEING HUGE SETS ROLLING IN OFF SEBASTIAN INLET'S MONSTER HOLE. THIS ONE HITS CLOSE TO HOME.
