3 out of 5 stars The Next Boston?.......2006-07-17

"The next Boston". That's the first thing I thought when I first heard this album in 1978. Very solid and polished sound. Absolutely seamless. Almost too good for a first album. "Hold Out" is the best track.

I was hoping for more after this but it didn't happen. Unfortunately a lot of great music was ignored on the airwaves during the "Di$co" era.

    4 out of 5 stars Obscure 70s gem.......2005-12-17

In 1978 keyboardist Patrick Leonard and vocalist Dennis "Fergie" Frederiksen and a small handful of other musicians formed Trillion. Recorded in the studios at the Caribou Ranch owned by former Chicago producer, James William Guercio, in remote Nederland, Colorado their debut album hearkens back to a different era. Their brand of hard rock is strongly reminiscent of much of the better work of Blue Oyster Cult.

Frederiksen's tweeter-scorching tenor graces all but one track on the 8 song release. The album starts with a bang on "Hold Out" with Fergie not only contributing vocals but also playing the tubular bells. Tubular bells?!?! Yes, oddly enough, tubular bells being used in 70s hard rock. The bells are subtle and you may not even notice them at first listen but they accent the song nicely.

"Hold Out" segues into "Big Boy" which has a very similar vibe. Both tracks have catchy grooves fun to tap on your steering wheel or coffee table to.

For all its cheese glory, "Give Me Your Money, Honey" is a regrettably catchy song... Regrettably catchy because, really, you don't want to be caught dead singing it to yourself in public... but after only a few listens, unfortunately you may find yourself doing just that.

"You Never Had It So Good" will never win any awards for having clever lyrics. But it has a rather enjoyable guitar solo by Frank Barbalace and Fergie has the kind of voice that could make even the yellow pages sound compelling.

While his keyboard/synthesizer theatrics are present on all the songs on the album, Patrick Leonard's keyboard playing is most evident on "May As Well Go."

The whole album is enjoyable and fun, it doesn't take itself seriously (unless you consider a song titled "Fancy Action" to be high-art that is), but perhaps what makes this album so enjoyable is knowing that vocalist Fergie Frederiksen would go on to sing lead for bayou rockers, LeRoux, and south California studio rockers, Toto. And Patrick Leonard would go on to produce the likes of Madonna, Peter Cetera, and Michael W. Smith... not to mention was ½ of the sadly overlooked and critically acclaimed, Toy Matinee with the late Kevin Gilbert.

While their musical seeds weren't sown until later, this album shows where Frederiksen and Leonard's musical seeds were initially planted and where they initially cut their teeth.

    4 out of 5 stars Hidden Gem.......2004-10-16

I remember finding this album in a sale bin at a record store (original vinyl release, by the way). I picked it up for a cool $1.99 (Canadian...back then the Cdn and US dollars were about dead even). It ended up being one of my favorite albums. As one reviewer wrote, they were ahead of their time by several years, and that was no more apparent than when I played it in the late 80s and friends loved it....and were surprised it was released in 1978!

If you chance upon this CD (or find the original vinyl) grab it. It will make an excellent addition to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars On vinyl to boot!.......2004-06-16

On listening to this album straight through, I found myself asking myself countless times, "This was made in 1978?!"
This band was spread out between two and eight years ahead of it's time. Stuff like this was not being made in '78. This band indeed started it and Journey, Kansas (sadly), Dokken, Bon Jovi, any other light alloy hair band of the '80s we now snicker at, finished it. This is what '80s hair rock would have sounded like if it had any nuts. If you can find this, get it. Crank it up good. Nod your head and say, "Yep."

    3 out of 5 stars First round.......2004-06-16

I'm listening to it for the first time, (on vinyl which I just found today) right now. I'll get back with you.

This is awesome music! The comment above about falling asleep in a forest is perfect! I heard about Trillian Green from The World Of Froud & The Faerieworlds Festival. I love this band! They rock the forest!

Trillian Greene is the best music ever. The sounds of the cello and the drums put you in a trance like state. It makes you want to go into the forest and sleep under a log. I highly recomend it!

                5 out of 5 stars Another Gem.......2002-04-23

The biggest difference between Trillion's debut and Clear Approach is lead vocal was changed to Thom Griffin. Thom's vocal is softer and mellower than Fergie so the hard and prog edge was a bit off and more pop rock and melodic side of the band emerged. If you like 80's melodic rock giants such as Foreigner, Survivor, and Journey you can easily get into this one. Their dynamism has been excellently controlled and refined as you see in Make It Last Forever, Promises and Cities. They're long forgotten but former members such as Fergie Fredericksen and Thom Griffin will never let it continue. Both of Trillion singers will be back as they participate in grand rock project Mecca coming out really soon. And Thom Griffin will be back with his first solo Ambition.

5 out of 5 stars No hits, just satisfaction!.......2001-05-11

I purchased Clear Approach (on vinyl) at my Army base PX back in 1980, just on a whim. I found it one of the most satisfying collections of light rock I've ever encountered. It is a pleasure to put this one on and just enjoy song after song. No big hits, no particular solo excess to anticipate, just well arranged, tightly played arrangements with decent lyrics and vocals and a refreshing lack of overproduced studio stuff - you can imagine hearing this band play in a small club and getting into the music. The interplay of bass, drum and then guitar at the start of "Make it Last Forever" sneaks up on you and hooks you into the beat. Just pop in the CD and enjoy!

                5 out of 5 stars T(h)rilling !.......2000-09-27

Once upon a long ago, when i couldn't tell good music from a hole in the wall, i owned a copy of a compilation album introducing various artists and bands, one of which was called Trillion, performing a song entitled "Give me your money, honey". Little did i know that the singer on this particular track, Dennis "Fergie" Frederiksen (also appearing on Toto's "Isolation"), was to star on my all-time favorite album (Le Roux's "So fired up") a few years later, and that Trillion was about to release one of the greatest pomprock albums ever. These were among the acts that i learned about when i started to take an interest in the genre in the late 80's. Recently both Trillion albums were released on CD in Japan at a reasonable price, enabling me to do away with my worn out vinyl copies. Coincidence or not, with the replacing of Fergie Frederiksen by the equally gifted Thom Griffin the keyboard oriented AOR/poprock of their self-titled debut (1978) made way for a superlative brand of pomprock (transatlantic counterpart of the - mainly British - symphonic rock scene) on this second album. Trillion were made up of five outstanding musicians. Besides Griffin, who also played guitar, they included guitarist Frank Barbalace, bassist Ron Anaman, drummer/percussionist Bill Wilkins and piano/keyboard player Pat(rick) Leonard, who was to make a name for himself writing songs for (a.o.) material girl Madonna.

"Clear approach" (1980) features 9 fabulous songs that epitomize the term "classic rock", standing as proud today as when they were first recorded. They are not as intricately arranged as the work of Kansas in their prime, nor do they have a wall of sound like Boston, yet these are two bands that might best be cited as stylistic templates, along with a host of other names, most of which are as "obscure" as Trillion (Spy, Starcastle, Roadmaster, Styx, Chameleon, Zon). This album far surpasses their first outing. Gripping, mid-paced tracks like "Make time for love", "Promises" and "Make it last forever" alternate guitar oriented hard rocking passages with the same stunning keyboard themes and delicate piano parts that are found on balladesque songs like "Cities" and "Love me anytime". John Boylan's production allows for an amazing clarity of sound, Griffin's emotional vocal delivery is a balm for tormented souls such as myself (this creative writing course is really paying off...) and multilayered backing vocals feature in all the right places. To single out the best tracks would be as futile as resisting the Borg. Without exception their songs are bloody terrific and "built to last". This is melodic rock the way it was intended, and great for people who have a fetish for keys. To know Trillion is to love them, provided you haven't been skipping your music appreciation classes. Give them a try !

4 out of 5 stars Great unknown band.......2000-02-11

The 70's were a great time for music when all kind of bands got a shot at the big time. The late 70's gave Trillion a chance for two great lps. I bought the first one on a whim and was pleasantly surprised. This their second offering follows where the first one left off. Not as rockin as the first but better vocals and harmony. If you like Styx, Boston or maybe kansas this should do it for you. Enjoy.
