If you think the Powerman 5000 hit "When Worlds Collide" sounds an awful lot like "Dragula" off Rob Zombie's Hellbilly Deluxe, don't blame Powerman 5000 frontman Spider--after all, it's in the genes. Zombie and Spider are siblings, and blood is thicker than a whole stack of Bibles. Fortunately, Powerman 5000 are much more than a blasphemous chip off the old gravestone. Sure, many of the rhythms on Tonight the Stars Revolt! are augmented by electronic samples, and the vocals are shouted over a battering-ram assault of drums, but the tunes weren't conceived in the same decayed crypt as Zombie's. Spider is actually more attuned to the power of melody than his big brother. His influences include new-wave bands like Blondie and the Cars (there's even a cover of the Cars' "Let the Good Times Roll"), as well as alternative rockers like Helmet and Girls Against Boys. Instead of focusing on themes of horror and the supernatural as Zombie does, Powerman 5000 seek inspiration from B-grade science fiction films from the '60s, making Tonight the Stars Revolt! more like a futuristic fun house than a genuine freak show. --Jon Wiederhorn

5 out of 5 stars Electronic Infused Space Metal!!!!!.......2007-04-09

I have to admit, I'm not a real big fan of industrial metal. But once in awhile a band comes along that catches my ears. One band in particular would be this one, I first heard them on the soundtrack to the movie "End Of Days" and I was shocked at how cool they were. Then I later found out that their singer is Rob Zombie's little brother and I knew I had to get the album. I'm really glad that I did, because it blew me away. It's a wierd fusion between Old Sci-Fi Movies, Electronica and Heavy Metal...with a unique and fun cover of The Cars "Good Times Roll" thrown in. This album gave me a new outlook on Industrial Metal...I just wish they would go back to this style, they were so good at it. Their last two albums were mediocre at best. If you want to hear THE REAL PM5K....Listen to this....Leave the rest alone.

1 out of 5 stars What a joke!.......2007-04-01

What are these guys trying to be? A generic version of industrial metal? These guys are lamer than NIN and even Rob Zombie. Who are they trying to be like? Here's a list of REAL bands if you don't believe me. Klute, Steril, Numb, Psychopomps, Kalte Farben and Skrew. All those groups make Powerman look like Cher doing a duet with a backstreet boy.

5 out of 5 stars Striking! Startling! Staggering! The Supreme Excitement of Our Time........2006-07-04

The album cover sure has it right. Those words all describe this album perfectly. Sure, it's not exactly a record that you can take seriously, but it's clear that it's not meant to be. This is as PM5K would call it, "Action Rock!", and it's probably one of the most fun albums I have in my collection. With ridiculously catchy riffs, lyrics that are perfect to yell along with, and a sleek sci-fi production, what's not to like?

This album was a total 180 degree turn from their previous album. On Mega!! Kung Fu Radio, there were funky bass playing and guitar riffs, two percussionists(one being a bongo player), the vocals were mostly rapped, and the lyrics barely had a trace of the sci-fi indulgence of this album. Did Spider One see the success his brother Rob Zombie was achieving in his solo career and decide to follow suits with a similar brand of hard rock? The answer is most likely a yes, but I'm glad he and the rest of the band did. This album is much stronger than any of Rob's solo albums, and whereas Rob is influenced by horror, Spider gets his inspiration from science fiction and comic books. Of course the lyrics are ridiculous, but that just adds to the fun.

Every track on this album is very catchy and memorable. Whether it be the hits like Supernova Goes Pop, Nobody's Real and When Worlds Collide or slightly lesser known songs like the Son of X-51 and the title track most of these songs are great. There are also a few songs which show that they are not a one trick pony. System shows Spider's rap roots and he does a good job of it, and Opperate, Anihilate shows that bassist Dorian Heartstrong had the ability to write great bass lines, though that shows through more on their previous album. They also play a great cover of The Cars' Good Times Roll, which more than equals the original. They even manage to pull off a surprising Vegas-type ballad in Watch the Sky for Me. There are really only two weak tracks here, Blast off to Nowhere which features the aforementioned Rob Zombie, and They Know Who You Are, which to my surprise was a single. Fortunately, the rest of these tracks are all near perfect, so those two songs don't hurt the album too much.

I will deduct a half-star for the two weaker tracks here, but the rest of the album is amazing. Like I said, it's not anything profound, but if you want something loud and enjoyable, few records can top this one. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A very good Alternative Metal album........2006-07-04

You cant really find a better example of Alternative Metal. Its really too bad that PM5K only had the Alternative/Heavy Metal style on two albums.

This is a really fun and interesting album to listen to. This is one of those records that you can make memories with. All the songs have a futuristic theme to them about spacemen, rocket ships, astronauts, and robots from space. Very cool. The songs are awesome. Just heavy enough to get your head bobbing and have a great sound to them with some good guitar solos thrown in.

If you like (old) Rob Zombie, and Static-X then this is for you. Even you like heavier more brutal Metal like me as well, you could probably get into this. However, dont bother with anything before this album or after "Anyone For Doomsday?" (that is if you can find a copy of Anyone For Doomsday...it was never realeased, unfortunately).

"Tonight The Stars Revolt!"

Wow. Powerman 5000, or PM5K, just blew me away with this. Then I listen to "Mega!! Kung Fu Radio" and it is completely different and it basically sucks. But hey I'm not reviewing "Mega!! Kung Fu Radio", I am reviewing this CD, which is by far the best by PM5K and is a very good CD.

On this CD, Powerman 5000 decided to go science fiction. All of the songs deal with space, or stars, or the supernova, or something from another world 'watching' us. And it was pulled off well.

The CD, although released in 1999, wants you to believe it was made a LONG time ago. The booklet that comes with the CD is filled with corny artwork of robots and even says "Fall 1947" on the cover. The music is also... with elevator music and a cover of a very old song. But most of the music sounds brand new and is graced with good production. Let's take a look at the tracks.

1) My Eye Is Upon You: The start. Gets you in the mood.
2) Supernova Goes Pop: And here it goes. I must note to you now that the singer for PM5K is the younger brother of Rob Zombie. So if you ever hear a Rob Zombie influence on this CD, that's kinda why. And this was on "Gran Turismo 3: A Spec".!!
10/10
3)When Worlds Collide: The hard-hitting first single. Greatness.
10/10
4) Nobody's Real: Starts off with a weird little beginning and not as loud as the last 2 tracks.
8/10
5) System 11:11: Filler if I ever heard it. Still a little to it.
5/10
6) Tonight The Stars Revolt!: One of the standout tracks, loud and so good, they named the CD after it.
10/10
7) Automatic: Never really could get into this one.
6/10
8) The Son Of X-51: Awesomeness, basically.
10/10
9) Operate, Annihilate: Better than Automatic, but I still didn't get it.
7/10
10) Blast Off To Nowhere: With cameo Rob Zombie, it starts off with a little message. One of the loudest tracks on here, and also one of the best.
10/10
11) They Know Who You Are: Loud parts, slow parts, all mix together greatly.
9/10
12) Good Times Roll: Now why'd they have to go and put this one on? It doesn't fit the mood, but it's still okay, I guess.
5/10
13) Watch The Sky For Me: The outro. Eww, elevator music.

According to my math, this got a 90 out of 110, rounding to a 81%. Hmm... But with all the good tracks on here, it's hard not to give it a 5 out of 5. Only complaint is it's too short. With only 10 real tracks, all of them pretty short. But that's just a minor inconvenience. Now, if PM5K would just return to this sort of music and not punk or whatever they do now, they'd return to being one of my favorite bands.

I RECOMMEND BUYING THIS CD, BUT IF YOU ARE ON A LIMITED BUDGET, YOU CAN JUST DOWNLOAD THE FOLLOWING SONGS.
"Supernova Goes Pop", "When Worlds Collide", "Tonight The Stars Revolt!", "Blast Off To Nowhere"

I give Powerman 5000's "Tonight The Stars Revolt!" a:
9 out of 10: Perfect for a metal collection and almost completely neccessary, but still not QUITE perfect.
