Album Description

From hair metal stardom to "Behind the Music" melodrama, few bands have rocked as hard and lived as high as L.A.'s famous foursome, Poison. Bret, C.C. and the boys celebrate 20 years of glam-trashed brilliance on the remastered Best of Poison. This must-have set includes all of Poison's biggest hits, including "Unskinny Bop," "Every Rose Has Its Thorn," "Talk Dirty To Me," and "Nothin' But A Good Time," plus a cover of Grand Funk Railroad's "We're An American Band."

4 out of 5 stars Rockin' n Rollin' all Night!.......2007-07-16

If you're talkin' bout Rock n Roll, then definitely you're talkin' bout POISON; the best hair metal band and the sons of glam rock! This 20th anniversary collection shows the undeniable truth that POISON marks as an icon to the 80's rock n roll. But I find it dissapointing that the songs included were almost the same in their first Greatest Hits collection. In my opinion, they should'nt have included songs like Were an American Band, Rock n' Roll All Nite and Your Mama Dont Dance since they were released in a revival album called Poison'd. The new songs included like Shooting Star and Last Song were impressive however. All the rest were truly great POISON classics. Overall, this CD may be the best substitute to their Greatest Hits 86-96 collection.

1 out of 5 stars THE WORST OF POISON!!!!!!!!!.......2007-05-13

I HATE POISON THE SONG I HATE THE MOST IS EVREY ROSE HAS A THORN IS THE MOST HORRIBLE SONG OF ALL TIME THE FIRST TIME I HEARD IT I THOUGHT OF THROWING UP THERE ONLY GOOD SONG IS NOTHIN BUT A GOOD TIME. ALL POISON IS IS A ONE HIT WONDER!!!!!MY ADVICE IS DON'T BUY THIS ALBUM!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great to hear Poison again!.......2007-04-19

I was missing my Poison songs that I remember jamming to when I was in high school. This album brought back floods of memories! Some of their newer stuff isn't too bad either. Great collection of some of their biggest hits. Good purchase...

This is a good copulation of their work. A recommended purchase for Poison fans.

4 out of 5 stars I always liked this band, no matter how many other people hate it :).......2007-01-22

Poison is one of those 1980s bands that became "unfashionable" after the 1990s grunge craze, and is now looked upon with almost universal scorn. Reviled for their big hair, spandex clothing, and simple song structures, almost nobody even admits to liking them, but I still do! For one thing, who cares if 80s music is no longer hip and trendy? Time waits for nobody, and all music eventually becomes old. The grunge music that replaced hair metal is every bit as dated as hair metal itself is, and I don't see people bashing Nirvana or Soundgarden for being "90s has beens" do you? Nothing stays hip and trendy forever. And the other argument used against Poison is that their music isn't complicated or technically complex, it only has 3 chords, and doesn't require any talent to play. Has it ever occured to you hair metal bashers that there is more to music than lightning fast guitar solos that are so impossible that nobody can play them? Sometimes 3 chords is enough to make an impression on the listener, even if it isn't hard to play. In fact, virtually all rock stars s*ck at playing their instruments. You only need to look at all the Avril Lavigne, Green Day, U2, Nickelback and Nirvana songs that have ever hit #1 on the rock charts to realize that. Nobody thinks anything less of these people for playing 3 chords on their guitars, so why should it be any different for poison? I think this band has always been underrated.

Pop pundits might contend that a Poison greatest-hits collection should be an EP. Yet despite jeers from critics, these glam-metal pretty boys produced big hits, filled arenas, and fueled MTV in the late '80s. And the opening track on this 18-cut compilation sets the record straight: "Nothing but a Good Time," indeed. From down 'n' dirty rockers such as "Talk Dirty to Me," "Look What the Cat Dragged In," and "I Want Action," to mega-ballads "Something to Believe In" and "Every Rose Has Its Thorn," this is a treat for those who like big hair and bigger hooks. Included are two previously unreleased songs, "Sexual Thing" and "Lay Your Body Down," the latter a lush, likable five-minute power ballad. One complaint: the song-by-song notes by singer Bret Michaels somewhat lack the pizzazz one anticipates from a band with such a colorful comportment. --Katherine Turman

5 out of 5 stars POISON OWNS!!!.......2007-07-16

Quite possibly, the greatest 80's hair metal band, Poison's Greatest Hits is packed with explosive tracks picked from their first four albums and some late releases. As my very first POISON CD, I came to love the band and their songs that are driven by ultimate killer choruses. Every song is perfectly written and impressively performed, from cool glam rock to highly anticipated power ballads, and included in the booklet were passionate liner notes about the history of their songs written by Bret Michaels himself! Hearing this CD will leave you wanting for more! Definitely, a MUST-HAVE for Rock n Roll addicts!

4 out of 5 stars Fun.......2007-04-19

Poison is a great band, even though most critics will disagree. There songs are fun and rocking. This is a great collection of there best songs and its great start for new Poison fans. Id even recommend it to anyone who likes good rock. They are better the Motley Crue.

5 out of 5 stars Talkin' Dirty.......2007-02-01

This was the first CD i picked up from them and got hooked from the start. There are many other songs that aren't on here that are a 'must have', but this CD should be in every Poison Fans Collection!!

1 out of 5 stars Pop rock, girly rock, GARBAGE rock.......2006-12-18

I never liked poison. The production of the actual albums are very good, but then they should be......so are Britney Spears!..and why? Well, after the new wave of British Heavy metal led to talented bands like Van Halen to get on the scene and make metal enorously popular in the US, record producers wanted to cash in on the act. So, just as Disney do today, groups were manufactured into iconic figures......in the case of poison, ....lets sell sex and string a few guitars in...oh yea, and hairspray.......and call it music! Its because of bands like poison that metal in the 80s was doomed. I hate grunge, but thank god it came before metal died forever. Poison existed because girls wanted to have sex with them....and, unlike motley crue, had no point to make musically
AVOID......unless you like manufactured tripe!!!

5 out of 5 stars Songs that shine.......2007-07-27

It's like each song is given it's own spotlight. Saying, "Here, this song is one of the Best of Ballads and Blues." I was able to enjoy the songs in a different light (pardon the pun w/ my review title). Hearing "Only Time Will Tell" on Swallow This Live, I really did not know how to respond to it. Hearing it on this album put it into a better context for me. I understood that it is supposed to be a ballad. The biggest treat for me will take a moment to explain. After C.C. and Richie both left Poison, I was in college for a few more years & found it difficult to keep up on what the band was doing. So...years later when I bought this "Best of" album, I heard songs that were new to me! I did not know "The Last Song," "Let me Be The One" or "Lay Your Body Down." Basically the new ones for me were any that were w/Blues Saraceno and C.C. (post-Blues Saraceno). The other big treat for me is a CD version of "Something to Believe In- acoustic w/ alternate lyrics." Up until then, I had a cassette only of the song (from side B of one of Flesh & Blood's cassette singles).
Overall, I am thankful to be able to get to know these songs apart from their respective studio albums.

    5 out of 5 stars Fitting Title..........2007-02-01

Pick up this CD ASAP!!!! The following tracks are worth every penny you will spend getting this CD!
    5) Good Love
    7) Until you suffer some (fire and ice)
    8) Be the one
    9) Life Loves a Tragedy
    10) Only Time will tell
    14) The Last Song
On this CD it features some songs where Richie Kotzen took CC's place, takes a little getting used to the difference but he wasn't a bad addition..still no one plays quite the same as CC!

5 out of 5 stars If you're into that sort of thing............2006-09-13

If you were thinking of maybe picking up Monster Ballads or Buzz Ballads, but somewhere along the line decided you wanted all the best cheese one band could serve up, then Poison's Best of Ballads and Blues is for you. Lets face it, Poison really can write some great ballads, and well, they try really hard for that bluesy sound with varying degrees of success. One nice thing about this CD, as a Greatest Hits compilation, it doesn't skip out any of their major releases. Poisons Greatest Hits 1986 - 1996 shows a greater diversity in the type of music, but it really focuses on the first three studio albums. Best of Ballads and Blues embraces everything they've done, in that style.

While my initial reaction to the album was a painful gut wrenching at the thought of a Greatest Ballad Hits CD, after checking out the solid lineup of tunes they have, there's just no knocking it. This is a perfect CD for that lady that liked the band, but never got into them so much as to buy all their albums. Here, she will get all her favorite Poison tunes in a one stop shop.

Ultimately, the album showcases that Bret Michaels is a much better songwriter than he is given credit for, capable of capturing genuine emotion and feelings and putting those lyrics to some very solid music.

    3 out of 5 stars Greatest hits 2 .......2006-04-03

    Poison rocks.
This cd should have been the greatest hits 2 with the best tracks from the albums that came out after the first greatest hits : 'Crack a smile', 'Power to the people' and 'Hollyweird' and also the best hits from 'Native tongue' as there was only one song from that album on the first greatest hits. A combination of this album and 'Rock champions'.

    5 out of 5 stars Life Loves a Therapy????.......2006-01-01

Other than the grossly mislabeled song on the CD (listen to the CD via Windows Media Player and the title of Life Loves a Tragedy is titled "Life Loves a Therapy") this album is beyond fantastic. You CANNOT go wrong with this CD. Poison is so much more than a rock-n-roll band, and it shows with this CD. Poison can any type of song (blues, ballad, whatever) and do it justice. Not many bands out there can do that.

5 out of 5 stars This is NOT aimless noodling, this is GOOD!.......2004-11-08

I'm a huge fan of technical music. I love Allan Holdsworth, Frank Gambale, Shawn Lane, Steve Morse, etc. The problem with some of the shredders out there is the music is boring. Not so with this album. Richie sheds his previous neoclassical stylings for a bluesy funk fusion. His tone on here is superb, and the melodies are great. If you like high calibre guitar playing with good TASTE, buy this. If you like Vinnie Moore/Joe Stump, stay away.

    5 out of 5 stars A stand-by.......2004-08-14

I wore out the tape I bought in...92? Round about then...so I wore out my casette. I usually get tired of self-indulgent "shredders" (Racer X as really bitchin' for about three days, then...onanism) but RK has real depth and a true sense of timing and melody that make his work stand out from Shrapnel's usual "showcase" artists.

5 out of 5 stars Best from Richie.......2003-11-12

This one is by far the best Richie Kotzen instrumental album to date. The opener Shufina and the following song Electric Toy are enough to put this album in the wish list of every guitar lover. The entire album by the way is extremely consistent from its beginning to its end. The music is a sort of blues fusion type of thing. There are true songs, Richie doesn't show off here for the sake of. He plays his trademark legato licks with heart and mind and the music in the end is truly gratifying. There is only one song that I don't like which it happens to be the one before the last one. Too confused. But apart from this one, a perfect brilliant album.

    5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING!!!!.......2003-05-19

INCREDIBLE, THE BEST KOTZEN ALBUM , BY FAR. THE TEMPOS, THE SOUND ARREINGMENT, EVERYTHING!!! I SPECIALLY LOVE THE "ELECTRIC JOY", THE SONG, GREAT IN EVERY SENSE. REALLY, A MUST FOR THE ONES WHO WANT TO COMPOSE GUITAR THINGIES!!!! THIS IS A TRUE MASTER OF COMPOSSITION!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Suprised but not dissapointed!.......2000-08-30

This all instrumental cd is nothing like his shredding debut. However, that is good. He is treading on newer sounds. This cd is produced, mixed, and engineered by Mr. Kotzen himself! The quality is crisp and clear. He also plays the guitar and bass himself, leaving the drum duties up to the veteran Atma Anur(also played on jason becker cd). Ok, this is rock/fusion and blues all blended into a simple stream of awesome guitar chops. This guy is having fun and playing well....for himself! There are some nice tones on this and the cd flows quite well. No, brutal guitar riffs or thunderous distortion on here. This is simply good playing with out any cover-ups or extra guitars thrown in to fatten it up. This is raw and honest.

4 out of 5 stars Great loose fusion deal!.......2006-01-28

This album has the feel of the old Beck fusion with a shredders twist. It might be to loose and jammy for those wooden shred lovers. So have an open mind to this funky stuff. It's damn good shred jazz-fusion album . It's enjoyable as can be with it's laid back feeling . Anyone who likes Beck, Dimeola, or Morse would enjoy this.

5 out of 5 stars Fierce battle rages on !!.......2004-06-26

First of all I am the great fan of guitar instrumental music. In Japan, sadly enough GREG is so underrated among guitar DIEHARDS.This CD showcases the fine prowess and outstanding versatility of these guitar players. These two guys play their guitar like the two heavy weight champions of the boxing match. They never compromise against commercial music. They did what they wanted to do.So If you hear this CD you will surely be knocked down to the ground and forced to bite the dust. They really had a fierce competition from start to end. This CD never lets you down.

    2 out of 5 stars yuk!.......2002-12-20

Half the songs are written by Howe and the other half by Kotzen. I think Kotzen's song contributions are pretty bad, although the first song ("Tilt") has an amazing solo by Kotzen that I may never forget. I think Kotzen mainly junks up the rest of the album. Skip it.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2000-06-21

The best shreders in town play together in this fusion tour-de-force. The 1st track, "Title", gives the tone of the record and is absolutely killer. Richie showcases his usual fast runs throughout the album, while Greg mixes lightning chops with unexpected, cool jazzy licks. A must buy.

    5 out of 5 stars fantasy+tecnique=whatta record?!.......1999-11-02

When I first listened to this record I was shocked. This two virtuosos had improved even more than I expected.I had no words to describe it to my friends who were interested in this kind of music. But I think that here Greg Howe shows more mature playing than does Richie Kotzen, but,of course, this is quite hard to be noticed.Although I still think, BRAVO!!!

I bought Richie's first album [yes vinyl] and didn't like it [Istill don't] but I love his work with Poison, Mr. Big, then I got his blues Bi Polar Bluescd and loved that, I read that this was a vocal effort not a instrumental so I was tempted to buy it, I bought it this year and wow! I can't stop playing it! If you like the Mr. Big + Poison + Bi Polar Blues cd's then this is the next one to buy, no fusion, instromental, just fantastic Rock songs, including a drop dead blues called "Things rememberd never die" Essential.

    5 out of 5 stars Oh yeah!.......2002-02-28

"Fever Dream," Richie Kotzen's second full length album, showcases not only Kotzen's virtuoso guitar playing, but also his strong vocals. This effort is sandwiched between his self-titled debut album and "Electric Joy," both instrumental efforts. Nevertheless, Richie could sing, and this album was a sign of the wonderful things to come from him. Great stuff!

5 out of 5 stars if you're a fan of straight ahead heavy rock this is 4 u!.......1999-02-14

richie kotzen is an all around incredibly talented musician: he can belt it out w/the best blues vocalist, play guitar in every style imaginable, and write really great rock songs. this album is one of my all-time favorites from him. one song,*dream of a new day* has been featured in a major motion picture and was included on the soundtrack. an intense, unique vocal presence that must be reckoned with. if you're a fan of driving rock and a little bit of blues this is for you.

4 out of 5 stars Not For Ramones Fans.......2001-10-28

Hey, shred and/or fusion fans! Don't overlook these Kotzen/Howe state-of-the-art guitar showcases. TILT and PROJECT team two of the most accomplished axe-murderers out there for some jaw-dropping incendiary fusionfests that manage to overcome the built-in negatives (basically, they were executive-produced by Dr Frankenstein, as both guitarists recorded their parts seperately in their respective basements, with session drummers overlaid onto the basic tracks) with hot, hot, hot playing. Sure, there's something coldly clinical about this approach but there's a lot of inventiveness and even chemistry here that you wouldn't figure on, given the methods used. On TILT, every track features two virtuoso players trying to out do each other with such fury and finesse it's a wonder they didn't catch fire..whereas this followup (just as good) goes for wider sound canvases and a bit more experimentation. You'll need to keep some flame-retardant beside your speakers while playing either cd, though. As you may have figured out, both are strongly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Kotzen and Howe just being Kotzen and Howe............1999-01-04

This is NOT "Tilt" 2. Richie Kotzen especially seems to have evolved since "Tilt", while Greg Howe seems to always double his technical ability from album to album. Howe's songs are typical Howe, while Kotzen seems to have gone for a more groove oriented style, mixing in some new age/ techno feel. Interesting, yet not quite as satisfying as "Tilt", though still a must have for instrumental guitar fusion fans!

5 out of 5 stars Kotzen At His Very Best!.......2007-01-09

Kind of a bad title for this review since it is for a greatest hits compilation, but that does not change the fact that this is a showcase for some of Ritchie's best work as a solo artist. Great melodies and riffs abound throughout this album. A must buy for all fans!!!

    4 out of 5 stars Great album.......2007-04-17

This is a great album because Kotzen plays great guitar music, however, Stu Hamm and Steve Smith lay a great rhythm foundation.

    5 out of 5 stars 2nd Favorite Shrapnel Album.......2004-05-10

This album is awesome!!! Think of it as fusion/blues/all-out-shred.It is my second favorite shrapnel album after Jason Becker's "Perpetual Burn".Its a shame its out of print, but I got a brand new factory sealed copy for $20.00!!! I guess I'm just lucky. The first two songs are actually possible to play on guitar with a lot of practice, but at the third song it just goes crazy. Kotzen's playing mixes unbelievable speed with extreme taste to create a highly enjoyable listening experience. Do whatever you can to get a copy. You won't be dissapointed!!!

5 out of 5 stars Ritchie, get this one Rereleased!.......2001-05-23

I really would like to see this album get released again. My brother who is a guitarist had this, Ritchie's debut, on cassette and lost it at some point. We even still have the case and cover but no tape. Anyway it was an influential guitar album for my brother because he was buying all these speed guitarist albums at the time (Marty Friedman, Jason Becker, Yngwie Malsteen, Vinnie Moore, Greg Howe, Kotzen, etc.) I'm mainly interested in drums but have become a dabbler in all different instruments. I would love to see this back in stores. It doesent make any sense to have all of his later albums available and not the debut that introduced him. This album rocks and more than just guitar freaks will like it! I'm putting my vote in for a new remaster!

5 out of 5 stars Kotzen, with a class of his own...........2000-07-13

I had heard this album first when I had just started listening to english music. It was originally called "Kaliedoscope". At that time I found it too noisy.I heard a lot of english music after that and of all kinds. After about 3 years I heard this album again at my friends place and this time I was thoroughly amazed. The Skills involved in playing, the Style of playing, The Mood of each song was just different from all that I had heard till then.I did not even remember that I had heard the same album before and I had found it noisy. Now I was dying for this album, but it was too late; the album was not printed any more.. I however managed to get the album on tape from my friend but by now my tape has given up. If anybody could help me get this music on CD,at any cost, I would be highly thankful to the person.I still have some hopes....(snodis@hotmail.com)...
