5 out of 5 stars Big Billboard Collection!!!.......2006-03-05

I Have this box set of the Billboard Top Rock'n'Roll Hits 1962-1966. I'm doing a Billboard Top Rock'n' Roll Hits collection from 1957-1972. Good for a little shortcut of your Billboard collection. So many good songs that I've never had before.

3 out of 5 stars It's okay .......2005-07-08

I'm really disappointed with Billboard's music collections. You'd think that one of the most respected music publications out there would put together compilations better than the ones they're offering.

I wasn't born until the mid-70's but I deeply appreciate the music of the 60's, which defined culture then and still does to this day. I recognize the vast majority of the hits in their collections but some selections just scream, "Filler!"

If you want good compliations, Entertainment Weekly offers excellent ones. There are more songs and they include hits that were lower on the charts but that people, nonetheless, still love.

BTW: On the back of the disc to the 1964 collection there is a note saying that because of licensing restrictions, The Beatles songs were not included. Otherwise, that year would have been entirely them (or at least a good 7 of the 10 songs).

2 out of 5 stars Overpriced and incomplete.......2004-05-04

Overall a good collection, but like the other reviewer said, 2 hours of music for a whopping $50?!?

And what happened to the Beatles' "I Want to Hold your Hand?" How could that *not* be a Top-10 hit?

2 out of 5 stars Not enough time.......2003-12-22

I would guess that you get about 2hrs of music for fifty bucks.
Nice box set for thirty, not fifty.

3 out of 5 stars OMIT THE "NAME GAME" AND THIS WOULD BE A GOOD COLLECTION.......2000-09-18

"The Name Game" is the most idiotic, annoying and atrocious hunk of junk in creation. It has nothing to recommend it and is pure madness. I wouldn't wish "The Name Game" on anyone and have detested it since I was a very little child.

"Bread and Butter" would be ok, except the words are pretty stupid.

This collection has some good songs, like "Sugar Shack," "Louie, Louie" and the Neil Diamond penned hit for the Monkees, "I'm a Believer." The 60s was the best musical decade. As I said, omit "The Name Game" and you have a good collection. It is like the frog in the punch bowl. The table looks nice, the punch is good, but the frog makes the punch not drinkable. "The Name Game" is not hearing friendly and has cost this collection one star.

Import exclusive compilation for the legendary Australian garage rock band features 14 studio tracks from 1966-67, including 'The Loved One,' 'Sad Dark Eyes', & 'Everlovin' Man', as well as three previously unreleased live cuts from the same era. Karussell. 1995.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Two Incredible performances, two incredible songs.......2003-12-23

Two of the songs on this album are so good, I'd like to give it 5 stars, but there are several fillers, and the lyrics of "My Name Is Earl" [which continues "and I need a girl"] make me wonder if he was the bloke The Dixie Chicks despatched! Ooh, it makes me wonder!

The Loved One [hence the title] has a terrific 9/8 beat, with an infectious handclapping percussion and a simple, no-nonsense blues progression. Gerry Humphreys, the vocalist, is hot on this track, but even hotter on Everlovin' Man.

There are a few other tracks that are OK, including
Shake, Rattle and Roll
The Loverly Car
Sad, Dark Eyes
and
Blueberry Hill

but the album is worth it for the terrific two songs I have commented on above.

You will also enjoy INXS' version of The Loved One.

Recommended for lovers of good blues singing.

5 out of 5 stars Some good blues.......2003-09-18

Firstly,I was surprised to find the loved ones on Amazon.com, but this is a different group to the other Loved ones that appear on this website. Both The loved one and Everlovin Man were hits for this Australian 60's band back in 1966. Everlovin man was a number two. I think this band is quite capable of not only rock but blues, just listen to "The woman I love" and their version of "I want you to love me". These are quite good cuts, but they were also good on ballads, like "This is love" and "Love song" the latter my favourite on the album and perhaps their most underrated song [don't worry about the liner notes] Gerry Humphreys had an interesting deep voice, on the harsh side, though his softer voice comes through on "Sad dark eyes and THis is love" and the Loved ones had a good mix of guitar, bass, electric piano, blues, rock and ballad. If you like 60's music with a bluesy edge, I'd recommend it to you.

4 out of 5 stars Great international dance comp of the acid-techno-type..........1998-10-09

If you're like me and hate to drop endless dollars on largely weak dance albums, this compilation is a perfect purchase. Songs range from out-and-out techno to acid house and disco-infused tracks. Featuring remixed club stand-bys (The Real Ohh-La-la, Until We Meet Again)and European faves (Nightmare, Who is He?), the 46-track CD is worth dropping $18 bucks for. The first CD is superior, but the second CD isn't as strong an effort. Overall, this is a great mix that is sure to please most dance fans.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Wasn't that great, folks?.......2007-02-24

The last three concerts of the Monkees summer 1967 concert tour were professionally recorded, with the idea of assembling a live album from the tapes. Also, two weeks before those concerts, a member of the Monkees touring crew recorded one of their concerts, probably for his own use. As far as I know, these four concerts are the only recordings of Monkees concerts from the 1960s that exist. Unfortunately, the exact same songs were played in the exact same order at all four shows. Which is not to say that the concerts are exactly the same. The Monkees make different mistakes at each of the concerts. Sometimes they sing the wrong lyrics, sometimes they play the wrong notes. And there are often technical problems with the microphones and instruments. Probably the major difference other than the mistakes is in the ad libs that the Monkees say during the concerts. They even occasionally ad lib a few lines from songs like "Singin' in the Rain", "There's No Business Like Show Business" and "Act Naturally". So, is it worth owning copies of all four concerts? Not really, unless you're an absolute Monkees fanatic. Of course, I own this collection, so I guess you know where I stand.

5 out of 5 stars Better Live Act than the Beatles.......2006-01-22

This concert is one that is both fun and enjoyable...the band displays great versatility and silences the critics and naysayers that they couldn't play their own instruments...any performer will tell you it's difficult to sing and play...and what's so unsual that each monkee would take a break from his instrument as he took a turn to sing...most acts of today lip sync...and if they don't they play to a pre-recorded track or tracks...there's not alot of groups out there today skilled enough to play live shows...anyway the monkees were one skilled enough to play live shows...this concert...i should concerts give you an example of what it was like to hear this talented group night after night...i'd have to say they were the top 5 groups of the 60's...definitely 1 of the 10 best groups of the 60's...they had alot of hits my friends...alot of hits!!! this concert is only the tip of the iceburg.

2 out of 5 stars For Completists Only. The group were ragged live in the 1960's.......2005-08-11

When I was 11 years old(1967) I attended a Monkees concert on this tour, and certainly, these 4 concerts are true to what I remember hearing at The Miami Beach Convention Hall(yes,I was at one of the 6 shows where Jimi Hendrix was one of the warmup acts). What you get in this 4 disc set are 3 concerts professionally recorded on 4-track by RCA engineer Hank Cicalo and one mono soundboard tape from Mobile,Alabama recorded by one of the group's roadies. The Mobile tape sounds somewhat better here than on bootleg editions. The primary fault is with the group's performances. As we all know, the Monkees were singer/actors hired to portray musicians, and on the group's first 2 studio albums,98% of the instruments were played by sessionmen.Even if Mickey Dolenz(Drums),Mike Nesmith(guitar),Peter Tork(Bass, electric piano.organ) & Davy Jones(tambourine) had been better players, they were in a no-win situation, trying to play songs from the first 2 albums, which featured up to 10 instruments per song.Typical Monkees fans would be best advised to buy Rhino's "Live 1967" CD,which creates one ideal set from the three professionally recorded shows(all the shows had the same song line-ups).For those who do purchase this 4-CD set, you'll note that none of the selections in the 3 professionally recorded shows match exactly with the recordings as heard on "Live 1967".I suspect that on "Live 1967",that Rhino engineers(who had access to 3 renditions of each songs) spliced between renditions, used sampling,or (perhaps) had The Monkees come into the studio to overdub/correct the recordings. What you'll get if you buy this set is the REAL(not particularly listenable!) ragged/amateur/garage band sound of The Monkees circa 1967,albeit lovingly packaged by Rhino Handmade. But "Live 1967" is much more listenable.

5 out of 5 stars What type of music? I'll tell you...........2003-10-23

This three cd set is awesome, i randomly bought it one day, and have been better since. I enjoy it because it is a very mellow set, it has all types of music, from Moby's Bodyrock, to the mellow Sunset by Fatboy Slim. There are many great hits. In general the music is not very tinny and cheesy, like the partyboy music in MTV's Jackass, nor is it slow and mellow stuff you'd find in "world" music sections, however it is a very nice mix in between. I listen to moby, paul oakenfold, louie devito, fatboy slim, rob zombie, etc. and this cd is perfect. Its worth the money

3 out of 5 stars Good value but unfortunately not great music..........2003-02-05

Ok, first of all, I'm not particularly a club music connoisseur, which puts me at a bit of a bias for rating this album. I love good trance and have a handful of favorite club mixes of my favorite trance tunes, but this album just did not appeal to me much. Perhaps other club music fans will disagree but I just really think there is much better club music out there and I'm not sure that much of this stuff will make any club's top ten mix. The album doesn't have that hardcore jump and pump the music feel to it. The melodies don't grab, a lot of the arrangements are monotonous and less than emotional. I just couldn't get into this one. I'm trying hard to be nice here and not say that it totally ....

Having said that, there are some good selections scattered throughout the CD's. The best part about this set is that you get three long play CD's with individual tracks of music (not mixed together like DJ albums) and the price is nice. If you happen to find a few favorites then it might almost be worth the money spent for the compilation. I'm just bummed that I spent as much as I did considering that there was almost nothing here to appeal to my musical interests.

In conclusion I will say that if you're a club music lover you might dig this album. There are a lot of songs included at a very affordable price (and a couple of them are pretty cool). For me personally though, I have to say that my three star rating is mostly given in light of the value and quantity of music, not the quality of music. There was almost nothing here I enjoyed listening to and, while I may copy off a song or two to place in a CD mix of my own, this set will not get a lot of replay out of me. If you enjoy melodic or progressive trance, techno or euro dance music I think you will agree with me; this album is just not that interesting. On a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being high) I give it a weak 2 and three stars is almost too generous.

4 out of 5 stars Good Value for Good Music.......2002-08-01

First of all, it is the rare box set that will earn five stars ... especially one with a whopping 45 tracks! However, this set come pretty close. And, unlike other box dance/techno sets, this is 3 CDs of tracks--no "megamix" here! The three CDS have some well-known gems on it scattered thoughout, such as Fat Boy Slim's "Bird of Prey" and the ubiquitous Moby's "Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad." But along with those tracks you will find 43 other songs that, while they may be less well-known to American audiences, are consistently good. I've played the set through 3-4 times and haven't ever raced to pick up the remote and skip a track. There's nothing too trance-y, nothing down-beat, nothing with obnoxious-nerve-grating effects.

If you are looking for a good collection of dance tracks, you can do a lot worse than this set.

3 out of 5 stars Decent club music for low price.......2001-06-19

I have to say that when I purchased this CD, I was a bit skeptical because of how many CDs and its price. I happen to be a major fan of club music, but more for quality, good club music! It is hard to find good club music on the market. Just because the label says its club music or it has a club type beat to it, doesn't make it good club music. Of course, personal taste is a major factor to all this as well. What's good to one person, isn't good to another person. Well, in my opinion, this cd is a pretty good CD. Each CD contains around 15 tracks, and half of each of those tracks are good. So, in all, that's pretty good odds. It is not too european or tranz-onic. Overall, you could do worse.

        5 out of 5 stars A Brilliant Collection!.......2000-05-23

This is a "must have" collection for people that wants some of the best music of the 60s, 70s, 80, and 90s. I really recomend it not only for the period of music it cover but also because of the rich variety of music it has.

1 out of 5 stars Very Few Originals.......2001-03-24

This set looks like a great bargain but beware...most of the songs are not the original versions that you know and love. If you just want the songs in any form, go ahead but if you must have the original recordings, look elsewhere.

2 out of 5 stars SOUNDS VERY MUCH LIKE IMITATION TO ME.......2001-01-13

Nice CD and sounds great. However, I just can't believe that the songs are original, at least it don't sound that way, or in other words. Sounds Very Much Like Imitation To Me!!!

2 out of 5 stars Most songs are not the original recordings.......2000-12-31

I somehow assumed that these would all be the original recordings, since Amazon offers no information to the contrary. When I received the 3-disc set, I noticed fine print explaining that most of the 36 cuts were "new stereo recordings"--which, even if they got the original artists to perform them, are just not going to be the same. Only 13 of the songs are listed as the real thing: The Birds and the Bees, Mister Livingston, Mule Skinner Blues, Stiki De Boom Boom, Ya Ya, The Oogum Boogum Song, Mr. Custer, Georgie Porgie, Nee Nee Na Na Nu Nu, Yummy Yummy Yummy, Baby Talk, Dede Dinah, and Alley Oop. If that's worth $9.97 to you, then you'll have no complaints.
