The Best Compilation of the Man on 2 Discs! Great Sound Quality Too!.......2006-04-21
The title very aptly describes this great classical guitar album showcasing some of the best ever works of John Williams on 2 discs. The track selections are great as they span the centuries from the Baroque greats of Bach and Vivaldi to the modern day composers such as Stanley Myers and York. John even flirts with Blues and Jazz-style pieces and they actually sound very good. In addition, they did a much better mastering job on this version than on the single disc, "Classic John Williams" album that was released a few years earlier and so the sound quality is much better. John Williams' playing is without peer and his technique is superior to the vast majority of the exponents of classical guitar that are out there. I've heard recordings of many others who have tried to play "Cavatina" for example and they have never come close to the natural and flowing version that John plays. If you are a fan of this type of music or of John Williams' work, this is the best compilation that you can get that's out there. Highly recommended!
Relaxing and Enticing to the Ear.......2006-01-26
The first song on this set is why I bought the whole album. It blows you away listening to the precise picking and the gorgeous way it is done. Not robotic like some freaks out there. This is true beautiful music. Runs together like a long summer drive in the country. It is just a perfect album to listen to at home or on the go.
A little something for everybody.......2005-06-15
First, this is gorgeous guitar playing by someone who knows what he's doing. John Williams (not to be confused by the film score composer of the same name) is a superb classical guitarist. Many of these pieces are *classical* in nature, while a few are more *popular*. Many are solo, the rest in small chamber groups. Some will get your toes tapping, some will start you daydreaming, and some will make you cry with their beauty. All of it is magnificent.

Simplemente Genial.......2007-06-13
Marvelous!.......2006-08-09
If you like both beautiful melody and rhythm of the Latin American sort, you will like this recording. If you like solo classical guitar of the supremely virtuosic sort, add that into the equation (plus a few excellent duets). These pieces are played with an uncanny rhythmic precision that does not sound mechanical. They are played elegantly, eloquently and with feeling neither overstated nor understated. Bear with me, because it is impossible to do justice to this beautiful recording with mere words. It is among my favorite recordings of all time - I never tire of listening to it.
Excellent interpretation.......2006-03-18
John Williams shows, once again, his guitar mastery in this album. Nice surprise to have few pieces accompanied by a "Cuatro".
I consider Alirio Diaz' interpretations of Venezuelan guitar music to be the gold standard, and yet I was happily surprised by John's version of these pieces.
amazing!.......2005-06-20
I discovered this record by chance. I had followed the work of John Williams for some time, but I never suspected that he had recorded Venezuelan music. John Willimas not just plays Venezulean music superbly but also catches the genuine spirit of it in all its sense.
If you like Venezuelan music this is definitely a jewel you must have. And If you haven't listened to it before I can't imagine a better way to be introduced to it.
Brilliant!.......2005-06-03
Yes!!
I think John Williams always wanted to do things that branched out from the 'classical' classics, but went silly with Sky. Here, is the happy medium!! He plays these songs with a fun-spirited nature, non-seriouso, with glissandi, fast tempi, strong rhytmic drive. I still like the Gerald Garcia reccordings (Latin American Guitar Music, Naxos) a real lot, but i think that Williams plays them in the true Venezolano spirit. 4.925719/5

The Kronos Quartet--apparently tired of performing some of the most riveting Western classical works composed in the last century--decided to take a vacation with Caravan. Where did they go? As evidenced by this globetrotting disc, seemingly everywhere. Music from the Middle East, South America, India, Portugal, and California (to name just a few) find their way onto this genre-blurring disc, along with a few surprises. They do a dizzying take on Dick Dale's "Miserlou," which we learn was originally written by Nicholas Roubanis in the '30s; perform a tune from India's bustling "Bollywood" film music industry; and tackle Terry Riley's inventive "Corgeo Funebre en el Monte Diablo"--the second movement of his Requiem for Adam (written for the late son of Kronos leader David Harrington). These are disparate but enthralling works that run the gamut from frenetic to reflective. Even though Caravan sounds less cohesive than Kronos's other world music foray, Pieces of Africa, this is still an enthralling collection and a must for Kronos fans. --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
unpleasant sounds.......2006-11-10
Kronos Caravan was a dissapointment and a waste of money. I can only stand to listen to two of the tracks. Most of the tracks are an annoying blend of too many strings and what ever instrument the guest artist is playing.I never want to listen to any of the music from the cultures represented on this cd.
Another great Kronos.......2002-07-09
The positive part is that this is really good but I rank their last "Nuevo" higher because that one holds togheter better.
This is mostly middle eastern/central europe stuff and even if I THINK I know way some argentinian/portuguise tracks are in this (because of that argentininan tango has it roots in middle europe.. portugal cobining bandelon with portuguese fado) it feels misplaced here but artisticially it is very good performed anyway and... hows about "Miserlou Twist" then.. well composer of that old hit has his roots in Libanon so.. :-).
Anyway is this very good, fun, well played and sound, production is also something extra.
You be pleased with this if you like stringquartets with more of a folklore style but my advice is that you by this togheter with Nuevo then you have two great great discs.
People used to Kronos cooperation with Glass, Steve Riech should like this but it is def. NOT minimalism att all.
Stunning.......2000-11-19
I've never been a fan of classical music. Being forced to listen to Mozart and such growing up in school, ugh, school has made me gain a deep hatred of famous classical composers and the like. Never thought I would ever get into classical music because it was all killed to me.
Then I heard of Kronos Quartet. They were raved about on a movie review for "Requiem for a Dream," which they are mostly responsible for the entire score on. So, I decided to give them a bit of a chance. I bought three of their albums, "Early Music," and "Kronos Quartet performs Phillip Glass." The most important of all of these is "Caravan."
The last CD I listened to, I was a little afraid to, because I figured I'd enjoy Western pieces a little more, and probably wouldn't like the more 'world' sound this album seems to say it has.
I couldn't have been more wrong, from the opening track, "Pannoia Boundless," I was in love, raving about it to everyone I knew. Every track seems to have an energy that oozes from within it, these dynamics that manage to grab me and toss me around every time. Even the weakest track, being "Cortejo Funebre en el Monte Diablo," because of the horribly synth-sounding beats, horns, and bells, still has a certain power after you get past the horrible intro of the song.
Either way, Kronos Caravan is a great listen for anyone just dabbling in classical string quartets and wants something a little more high power and intrusive than your average "background music."
And they never stepped off the train..........2000-07-22
According to the press and liner notes, this album is intended to chart a sort of musical journey, obviously reflected by the title. Such a concept is highly suspect - eclecticism for its own sake (or more likely for the sake of capturing the widest consumer base) very rarely leads to meaningful, cohesive art, possibly because the best art comes "from within", that is, from within an individual's or a group's experience, not simply the surface reflection of ethnic stereotypes. Add to this the antequated notion that a caucasian string quartet can "capture" the world's sounds for YOUR discerning ears, and you have a piece of sheer mediocrity.
Osvaldo Golijov's arrangements excel at highlighting various effects of instrumental combinations. That's a plus. However, these performances are mostly shorn of whatever vitality is inherent in the compositions, by the quartet's lack of rhythmic unity and attack - some of these takes sound like tentative rehearsals. The worst in this respect has to be "Aaj Ki Raat". Anyone who knows Indian film music is aware of its energy and manic quality. This performance, however, has none of that, opting instead for a navel-gazing lack of dynamism that actually serves to bury the melodic theme, in lieu of which we are given the sound of tablas, which even Zakir Hussain can't make jive with the ennervated ensemble.
Not surprisingly, the only impassioned performance is "Turceasca", likely because most of the music is played by Taraf de Haidouks, a Romanian Gypsy ensemble that lends its "quaint" and "primitive" spunk to the tastemaker quartet, producing a "rousing, olde country" stewe.
Anyone with an interest in music beyond her/his borders should pick up the real thing, spend a little money, force her/himself to get used to its strangeness, and maybe she/he will come away a little wiser. Oh, yes, purchase an honest classical disc next time, as well.
Beautiful!.......2000-07-13
This CD is great in many ways. There is beatiful music from all over the world on this one. It's interesting 'cause it's rather easy listened, but still very deep and vital. "Pannonia Boundless" and "Turceasca" was the first two tracks to capture me. After that you discover the beauty of the other tracks. The themes of the songs are very clear and they work fine both as headphone-music as background-music. Get this one!

Convincing to a Guitar Layman.......2005-04-02
Although I didn't enjoy this disc quite as much as Garcia's "Brazilian Festival", I thought it was a fine recording that opened up to me new areas of repertoire at a price that I couldn't resist. I'm not a guitarist and cannot really comment on Garcia's achievement as a musician, but the whole came across to me as a layman as perfectly convincing. Listen especially to Piazolla's Cinco Piezas, and there to "Acentuado"! But the Lauro, the Brouwer and the rest are definitely not to be despised either. The recording quality (made at Tonstudio van Geest in Heidelberg, Germany, 1989) is excellent, with none of the "early Naxos" problems sometimes encountered. If you are out for some relaxing, interesting guitar music, this could be for you.
Excellent Album.......2004-03-01
Excellent interpretation of some famous pieces by A.Lauro.
I also warmly recommend the marvelous early composition by Brouwer, the suite No. 2 in D.
A Good Try.......2004-01-19
Gerald Garcia is amzing , but he could even use lessons from Jerry Garcia When it comes to rythmn.
Nice Music, Mediocre Performance.......2003-07-09
This CD contains some exquisite pieces that aren't often found on recordings. I bought this CD specifically to have a recording of Cardoso's Milonga and Dyens' Tango en Skai. Gerald Garcia has received much praise, but I simply dislike the way he plays on this CD. The performance of the Milonga lacks rhythmic drive, and the sweeping phrases of the Tango en Skai are unclear at best. There are many better recordings of the famous Lauro pieces, and some of Cinco Piezas are given too soft a touch where more gusto is clearly called for (notably Acentuado). Despite my objections to the performer's interpretations, the brilliance of the compositions usually still shine through and alternative recordings are scarce. If you want a recorded version of these pieces for some reason (I like to play the Milonga), then buy this inexpensive CD. Otherwise, you might as well get a different one.

Customer Reviews:
Oh, the languor! The passion!.......2003-12-26
Some time back - now rapidly approaching the two-year mark - I attended an Australian Chamber Orchestra concert while they were on tour in the U.S. The printed program was a combination of somewhat standard fare by Mozart and Bartok combined with offbeat works by Haydn and Sculthorpe. Their ability to absorb and idiomatically recreate such a wide range of styles was, to put it mildly, staggering. It was a rousing success for this Tognetti Troupe, so much so that they were called back for multiple encores.
The final encore was Tognetti's arrangement of Astor Piazzolla's "Oblivion" for string orchestra (sans bandoneon), and it was a sublime ending to an outstanding concert. In that performance, it was clear to me that the unique Piazzolla style had survived the journey from Argentina to Australia, and that, moreover, Tognetti had succeeded in capturing the Piazzolla spirit in his string orchestra arrangement of "Oblivion", made even more insinuatingly sinuous (if that were possible) by "implying" the missing bandoneon part. (In point of fact, Piazzolla's music exhibits a great deal of resiliency to arrangement for instrumental forces other than what he wrote for, as can be witnessed in the various successes of Daniel Barenboim, Gidon Kremer, the Kronos Quartet, Yo-Yo Ma, and even the Montreal Symphony Orchestra led by Charles Dutoit.)
Given the idiomatic panache with which the Tognetti Troupe performed "Oblivion," as well as a personal preference for string orchestral arrangements, I had high hopes that a Piazzolla CD by this group would be forthcoming. When, about a year ago, an Australian cyberfriend informed me that the group had scheduled a series of concerts of Piazzolla's music, my hopes brightened considerably. And now that album is here. (N.B.: It wasn't easy to find this product page despite its being here for some two months already; various "power search" tricks failed. Finally, almost in a fit of desperation, I succeeded in "fudging" this page from its UK equivalent by monkeying with the URL.)
This is a well-filled album (at a total timing of 74:31), and it is everything I could have hoped for, and then some. This is as good a cross-section of Piazzolla's music that can be made to fit on a CD, including several of his most famous works covering the full gamut of his style, from wildly energetic to passionately languorous.
James Crabb - the guest soloist (and arranger of several of the album's works) - is nothing short of incredible. Performing on classical accordion - like the bandoneon, a "button" accordion, but with a far different and much more complex arrangement of "keys" - Crabb seemingly has no difficulty in adapting this instrument to perform music that fell naturally to Piazzolla's own hands but must be at a higher level of difficulty for his chosen instrument. Nevertheless, he does it all, and the effect is as if Piazzolla himself was there.
While I've heard most of this music before, either by Piazzolla and his own group or by one or more of the groups noted at the outset, works new to me are "Vayamos al Diablo," not quite a tango with its strange 7/4 beat, and "Tanguedia," a dark piece suggestive (as the booklet notes point out) of a dangerous Buenos Aires at night, as it "deconstructs" totally while it proceeds to its eerie conclusion.
But I am a sucker for passionately languorous Piazzolla, and it is in such pieces as "Oblivion" and "Milonga del Angel" that I think Tognetti and Crabb do their best work as arrangers and performers. The string chamber orchestra seems ideal as an instrumental setting for these, especially with the way the arrangements incorporate both piano and harp (particularly the latter, which adds a marvelous touch). Tognetti's solo turns on violin exhibit a sweetness of tone and a performing style as well that - when combined with the full strings plus harp - can literally take one's breath away. This is magic that lingers.
Maestro Tognetti has an incredibly natural feel for this music, and his ability to imbue his ensemble with "the feel" is remarkable. These Aussies, to a person, play Piazzolla as if they were "to the manner born." And it's downright nice of Tognetti to arrange the tracks so that "Oblivion" is the stunning closer: a wonderful keepsake of that evening, nearly two years ago, when the languorous strains of "Oblivion" wafted out from the stage to enthrall me and leave me both dizzy and hungry for more.
This album is, without question, the "Piazzolla album of the year" and among the finest chamber orchestra albums it's been my pleasure to enjoy. Should Maestro Tognetti bring his troupe to the U.S. again this year, showcasing the music on this album, I'll be there!

When you have the heaviness of Chevelle's music combined with the incredible melodies of a string quartet it can only transalate into the perfect formula to achieve greatness. I recommend this album to every Chevelle fan who has approved of their personal message to the rest of the world,"Promote the music, not us..."

Fun debut CD from a great band........2004-07-27
Cibo Matto is undoubtedly one of the best new bands of the past decade. They combine pop sensiblities that are both retro and modern, American and foreign for a very unique J-pop-transplanted-to-America sound. Cibo Matto's debut EP is a fun collection of songs that showcases their talent and musical sensibilities.
Why did I give this CD only three stars then? This CD had a very limited pressing and has long since been out of print. Four out of the five songs are either the same or alternate versions of songs available elsewhere. The result is that hardcore Cibo Matto fans end up scouring used record stores and/or online venues in order to find this disk, and then are slightly disappointed that the 15 minute-long disk doesn't really contain all that much in terms of new material. The CD requires more effort and more money than it is really worth in order to obtain it. Now if they were to reissue it, that would be a different matter...
Pre-Viva La Woman Viva La Woman.......2003-11-12
For the most part, this EP is really only early versions of songs available on Viva La Woman or Super Relax (the song Crumbs is actually the same version, I think). The cover of Black Hole Sun is interesting, and the rock-ier version of Know Your Chicken is definitely worth a listen, but other than that, it's really just rougher versions of the glory that is Viva. If you're a Cibo Matto fan, eh, it's worth a listen, but I'd buy the Smokey & Miho or solo Yuka Honda stuff (both fantastic) before picking this CD up...
cibo matto... food love.......1998-11-18
The best reason to buy this is for the GOOD version of 'Beef Jerky' (it doesn't have most of the guitar that the album does) The rest of the songs are fairly solid. Don't forget the cover of the Soundgarden song 'Black Hole Sun', which was disappointing.

Will Haven's pride and joy.......2005-01-02
If you like Will Haven at all, you've got this this album. If you haven't heard them, buy it, you'll love it. If you've heard them and disliked it, your a weird, weird person for coming onto Amazon and reading a review for it. But to the rest of you punkass [...] (yes you), it's time to get down and officially jiggy with an album that puts most others to shame. Aside from being Will Haven's best, it is also one of the very best albums I've heard, and is accompanied by Will Haven's EP in my collection. Great songs here include, Stick Up Kid, I've Seen My Fate, Ego's Game, Extinguish and Foreign Film. Of which, I've Seen My Fate and Ego's Game compete with Ruin by Lamb of God as my faveourite song of all time. Yes, it is possible to speak Will Haven's name in the same sentence as Lamb of God, a band of Godly importance in the metal genre. Moving back to Will Haven however, I only heard of them through my cousin who told me that they "are the dog's" with an enthusiasm only seen in him when he'd had more than a couple of Stella's and was trying to chat up girls for a threesome. On this recommendation alone, I bought this album, followed by Will Haven the next day simply because I loved this so much. If your not willing to do that, then download I've Seen My Fate and remember to close your mouth.
Crown Them They Are Godlike.......2003-07-03
Will Haven's debut Full-length.
I don't really agree with the 'hardcore' term thrust onto them, Will Haven have their own little genre. Yes, it's all screaming, but the point is it's fantastic screaming. Grady has some of the most distinct vocals and lyrics i've ever heard. These guys are talented and creative, which is why it's such a shame they had to break up.
Key Tracks: Stick Up Kid
I've seen my Fate
Mason
Foreign Film
A great album, but it doesn't quite match up to WHVN (their best work) or Carpe Diem. If you like anything they've done, you should buy all 3 albums. I did, and i wasn't disappointed.

Will Haven-El Diablo.......2003-04-19
Will Haven-El Diablo. This CD is great. Will has a way with
pulling off his music.Hauntingly Heavy. Will Haven is
bound for stardom, that's if he does'nt blow out his vocal
cords first. This is a must have CD.
Bad Luck.......2002-07-10
I was unfortunate enough to hear this CD before other potentially good hardcore bands. As a result, all hardcore bands I hear must measure-up to Will Haven's greatness. The band's debut album begins with some strange noises which give the echo effects of standing in a concrete room and eventually lead into the heavy guitar of "Stick Up Kid," which is immediately followed by two of Will Haven's best songs, "I've Seen My Fate" and "Ego's Game." The result is that Will Haven is found to play in a tone very different from other bands. Instead of an album that is fast-paced from beginning to end, Will Haven gives us an album that is actually much slower than is to be expected, but every song on the CD is as heavy as ever. Will Haven offers the listener a sound that is so different from anything else, it is almost an acquired taste, even to the seasoned metal fan. However, once this taste is found, Will Haven proves to be a great amongst greats.
