After 12 years, 8 albums, 4 Dove awards, 3 Grammy nominations, and 3 gold records, the members of the hit group Newsboys are beginning to branch out in new directions. The first member to take an adventurous leap is bassist-singer Phil Joel with his debut recording Watching Over You. Newsboys frontman Peter Furler is both producer of this project and partner in the new record label Inpop, which signed Joel as their second act. Watching Over You is a heartfelt rocker, showcasing Joel's impressively developed vocal and songwriting talents. Guitar driven, honest, and reflective, this CD's pop-rock sounds won't blow out the windows, but if played in a car, it may cause the driver to accelerate beyond the speed limit. Though he belts out these songs with rock & roll finesse, there remains a sensitivity that expresses Joel's Christ-centered convictions. He is not being presumptuous in beginning a solo career; in fact, one wonders why he didn't do it sooner. (And for those of you who are fearfully wondering, Phil is not leaving the Newsboys.) --Israel Button

Dreamy!.......2004-05-17
WOW! This guy totally rocks! I don't have much to say but that this album is awesome and any fan of the Newsboys must have it! If I had to pick favorite songs on this album, it would be God Is Watching Over You, Strangely Normal, Author Of Life, Tonight (Not Fading Away), My Generation, and Be Number One. This album has a great sound; It sounds kind of like dreamy pop and rock, as I describe it. Anyway please ENJOY!
Aw yeah!.......2004-01-16
I absolutely love this CD. Newsboys is a great band, and in songs like "Entertaining Angels" where Phil Joel was the lead singer, the songs came out nice and crisp. Well now Phil Joel's voice is packed into this freshman album. You won't be disappointed.
A Great Album About a Life Lived In Christ.......2003-05-05
I have to begin by saying I am a huge fan of the Newsboys! I have seen them in concert at least 5 times. They are one of the most innovative Christian bands, and they stay true to the heart of their message... Jesus is Lord of all!
Phil Joel is a strong example of what the Newsboys have accomplished in Christian music, creativity and joy comes across with every note. This album is written in reflection of a life lived in Christ. He talks about what it is like to be; cared for by God, different than the status quo, saved by grace, and in awe of how wonderful Jesus really is!
His music is pop rock, driven by guitars and catchy hooks. He is definitely sincere about his faith and love for God. And that comes across loud and clear in each of his songs.
The title cut is great. It is varied in musical approach with acoustic and electric guitars. He showcases his great voice which can sing in regular melody lines and reach high into fallsetto ranges.
I especially like the song "Strangely Normal". I like his approach to telling what it's like to be a unique and loved creation of God. The song says, "Make for yourself no apologies. Keep your eyes on Jesus and let him be the author of our lives and, by following Jesus we become who we're supposed to be."
I love that message! Phil Joel is very positive and accurately portrays the benefits of a life lived in Christ. This is an enjoyable album and well worth your time!
I DON'T LIKE CCM, BUT I LIKE THIS!!!!!!!!.......2002-10-27
The Newsboys, who Phil Joel plays bass for, bring on rock music in their releases. Suprisingly, this is much on the calmer side, very CCMish. Even though I am a huge fan of the harder stuff, this is awesome!!!! Whodathunkit that Phil has such a good voice!!!
You don't have to skip over any songs on this CD, they're all good. Its done in a flash (33 mins.), but you'll want to play it over & over. Great job, Phil. Can't wait to get his soph release.
RECOMMENDED FOR ANY CCM OR NEWSBOYS FAN!!!!!

Customer Reviews:
I agree with some people...others i dont.......2006-12-12
First of all...Im over 13. I just dont wanna fool with buying a new cd or anything to write a review.
I agree with Anthony Rupert's review for this cd because this album isnt all that great. In fact I wasnt all out to buy it because the album cover bored me and the singe "Shine on" wasnt all that great either. In other words that song bored me. But then I heard "Photo" and thought well maybe this guys still got some class afterall. I was wrong. "Photo" is actually the only good song on the record! "shine on" "from the start" and "with you gone" are decent but for the most part the album bored me like i should have known it would have. Also I read an interview for this cd that said his next album would be a shock to some people. It was. After hearing this I could barely listen to his old album for weeks. Now Im getting over that. I mean with a popular and very good song like "On the way down" or the classic "true" we just had to have the album! I fell in love with it too. "Echo Park" "Exit to Exit" "Blind Sight" "Illusions" and the title track were great. But now I can barely listen to him. I dont like this new stuff and I dont think that many people do. "Photo" is worth the money...if you download it. Buy that song or get it free or however you download and then pretend this cd wasnt made.
For Better Or Worse, The Album Title Says Alot!.......2006-10-21
In case my album review title makes little sense, I'll simplify things for you - "You Stand Watching", the title to singer/songwriter/guitarist/ex-heart-throb Ryan Cabrera's sophomore album, has a good side and a bad side. The good side - "You Stand Watching" is a good (if less obvious and less engaging) way of inspiring lovers and belittling haters of his music. The bad - the small percentage of the world that bothered to recognize this album's existence seemed to be watching without listening.
Without a doubt, this album is much better than his Platinum-selling debut album "Take It All Away", using elements of Jazz, Latin & R&B in his usually-vapid brand of radio-friendly Pop-Rock. No, he's not exactly breaking musical boundaries or fully delving into any new genres by any means, because this album remains to essentially be a Pop album. However, Ryan Cabrera has taken a much more mature approach with this album, co-writing and co-producing almost every track on the album - something I can't say for some of his other peers.
Running slightly below 40 minutes at 11 tracks, "You Stand Watching" lacks filler tracks and is infested with much more highlights than his previous outing. "Hit Me With Your Light" is a vulnerable power ballad where Ryan's vulnerable vocals sing about seeking help and guidance from God amidst the darkness over your typical arrangements of powerful guitar riffs and random tinges of percussion; "Photo" employs the use of Ryan Cabrera's soft vocals and smooth piano-violin background music for a song based on the importance of old photos and the longing memories they hold (in order words, reminiscent heartbreak); "Last Night", complete with obligatory guitar strings and a satisfying vocal performance, interestingly tells the story of a man wanting to leave behind his "fast" (a.k.a. lusty / woman-eating / sexual / etc.) side behind with his lady; and on the touching piano ballad (and personal album favourite) "Fall Baby Fall", Ryan soulfully (yes, I said soulfully) croons about encouraging his girl to embrace her tears if they'll make her stronger.
Now then, what about that filler I was talking about? Despite a sweet dash of Latin guitar, "Our Story" comes off as a rather boring ballad about promising commitment if his woman of desire can "roll with it"; his occasional rise over soft singing/whispering results in an occasionally whiney sound on piano-driven ballad/album closer "It's You" (think of it as a less appealing, earlier, half-a**ed alternative to Ne-Yo's "So Sick", since "It's You" also talks about being unable to escape a lost love); and "Shine On", a breezy, radio-friendly acoustic guitar ballad about wishing the best to an ex-lover (in his case, Ashlee Simpson), is ultimately forgettable when you focus more on the sometimes-confusing verses instead of the way this single was craftily marketed.
For those of you who misunderstand what I mean by "Shine On" being craftily marketed, let me break it down for you for a minute. The song is simplistic Pop fluff that'll win over any underage female with Ryan's sweet vocals and sympathetic lyrical content, meaning it's perfect for radio. Then there's the fact that it's sympathetic, which means he might gain some respect from individuals who might discard him as a personality-lacking, crude has-been. THEN there's the fact that the song capitalizing on his crumbled relationship with singer/actress Ashlee Simpson, equalling temporary media exposure and a slight bit of interest for the fan-bases of both artists.
Whether that made sense or not to you is your business, but if you wish to listen to a mellow album (meaning it's extremely ballad-heavy) from the likes of a talented, respectable individual, definitely buy this album! For those of you who are either unfamiliar with his music or simply hate on male Teen Pop for obvious reasons, give this album a listen anyway and judge for yourselves whether this album is good or not. 4 stars!
A pleasant album, a few flaws though........2006-08-28
It's hard to say why I give this album 3 stars and not 4. Ryan's a great young talent who is obviously at times trying to break out of the bubblegum pop genre of music. This album does show off a lot of fine jazzy alternative musicianship, the only problem is, it's underdone to the point it sounds like average pop. Basically, I could have taken this album as a rock album if he'd just turned up the distortion a little bit on some tracks, and spent a little bit more time writing some of the lyrics. His voice has matured a lot since the first album, but the only way he chose to show that was to hit a lot of high notes when it wasn't really necessary. The production is a bit off at times (specifically, the way the violins were recorded in track 11). The album is a nice departure from the normal pop scene, it's pretty upbeat, and has earned plenty of repeat listenings from me. I think if he puts a little more work into his next album it should be a 4 or 5 star release, sadly, You Stand Watching only gets three.
I'd give him some credit.......2006-05-17
I am 15 years old right now and I bought this CD like within a week right after it came out. I loved the seeing the music video to "Shine On" and loved it on the radio. I didnt think the song was alright before, but the song started to get stuck in my head. So Im like, "I gotta get the CD!". So I went ahead and bought it. Even though there were a few songs I loved the most that is why I rate this a 4 stars and not a 3. Because of the song "Find Your Way" and "From the start". Those are my two favorite songs and those songs are why it made 4 stars on my vote. The other songs arent really that good but "Shine On" and "Fall baby fall" are okay.
I wont say I love this CD he could have done better but he is a talented singer. But I prefer you guys buy the songs on iTunes or Napster or something. Anyway 4 stars becuz hes cool and stuff...I suggest everyone listen to "Find Your Way" ITS SOOOOO AMAZING. ~tony, 15, maryand.
2-1/2 stars -- Please take it all away.......2006-05-10
Now, don't get me wrong; I actually liked Ryan Cabrera's first album. I don't know if his popularity stemmed from his then relationship with Ashlee Simpson or from good ol' TRL airplay or what, but at any rate, Take It All Away was still pretty good. But I can't say the same for his follow-up, You Stand Watching.
I think Kool Fool described Ryan's vocal very accurately. Truthfully, Ryan's voice has always been kind of whiny, but now it's gotten to the point that it's hard to even tolerate (see especially the first two tracks: "From the Start" and "Hit Me With Your Light"). That pieced with the below-average lyrics makes for a bad combination. Ryan co-wrote all the tracks himself this time around: bad move. The album is 37 minutes long, and it feels like that's how long it took to write the songs. This is best illustrated on the single "Photo", which doesn't really go anywhere.
I actually thought "Our Story" was pretty listenable until he started to ask things like, "Is there anyone out there who'll love me?" And nothing else is very impressive either. Sorry, Ryan; while I did defend your first album, You Stand Watching is an album I can't stand hearing.

Ridiculously underrated........2004-10-07
Whether it's because they weren't baptized in the crowded cookie-cutter scenes of Southern California or Northern New Jersey, or because they've been blessed with an incredible inherent ability, the songs on this record far transcend the overdone cliches of pop-punk. The mark of a great song is its ability to transcend genres, and unfairly lumped in a genre that has become the equivalent of 'boy bands with guitars', Alli With An I writes sincerely great songs that could've easily been just as awesome as indie rock anthems, country ballads, acoustic folk, or new wave pop.
Five years from now when the fads have faded, you will be able to listen to almost any track on this album and say, "hell yes, this song is the real deal." And days later you will be humming a song to yourself, only to realize that it's any of the ridiculously catchy songs on this CD.
The world is not fair, so I can't say "get this before they're famous." But I can say, "get this because it's better than anything anybody on the Warped Tour has put out in the last five years."
Heard it on their website.......2003-11-23
I first listened to Alli with an I back in February when "Long Story Short" was released nationally and I thought it was awesome. "I Learned It By Watching You," is their first record off of Law of Inertia and sounds better than their first release. It is well produced and has more songs. Alli with an I has their own distinct pop-punk sound and it's worth the $13.98.

UNFORTUNATLY THIS WAS MR WITHERS LAST CD/ALBUM.THIS WAS A VERY STRONG FINISH TO SOME OF THE MOST POWERFUL YEARS OF WRITING AND CREATING.I HAVE THIS CD AND ALSO THE LP.ON THE LP THE VOICES AND THE MUSIC SOUNDS SO LIFE LIKE,YOU CAN FEEL WHAT HE SINGS ABOUT AND THE PREFORMANCE MUCH,MUCH BETTER.ANYWAY I COULD ONLY RATE THIS 5 STARS BECAUSE I COULDNT GO TO 10.I ONLY HOPE BEFORE MR WITHERS LEAVES US ONE DAY THAT HE RECORDS JUST ONE MORE TIME OR AT LEAST PREFORM WHAT HE HAS DONE. HIS USED CDS MAY SEEM TO COST A LOT,BUT THIS CD IS OUT OF PRINT AND TO DATE WAS HIS LAST PREFORMANCES.ABOUT 5 TO 10 YEARS FROM NOW YOU MIGHT WISH YOU HAD IT BECAUSE YOU MIGHT BE HARD PRESSED TO FIND ANOTHER ORIGINAL, AND IF HE NEVER PREFORMS AGAIN ,THIS CD/ALBUM WILL BE WORTH A FORTUNE.BUT WHAT EVER THE PRICE WILL BE,HIS MUSIC WILL HAVE TO BE RIPPED FROM MY HANDS BECAUSE TO ME IT IS ALREADY PRICELESS. PS.IF YOU ARE A FAN LOOK FOR HIS DUAL DISC(CD AND DVD).IF YOU THOUGHT YOU KNEW WHO HE WAS,WAIT UNTIL YOU SEE HIS INTERVEIW THE CD/DVD IT IS CALLED JUST AS I AM. (THE BROTHER IS DEEP)HIS LAST INTERVEIW IN OVER 20 OR 30 YEARS.ALSO LOOK FOR (+JUSTMENTS) ANOTHER ONE OF HIS GREAT ALBUMS THAT IS VERY,VERY RARE.

Amazing!.......2007-04-25
I found this album at a local used CD store and bought it with no knowledge of the band. Hearing it for the first time was truly sublime. We need more music like this nowadays. Buy this album!
This is the new you for you........2006-01-20
Derby is a Portland based band that plays a slightly 60's inspired brand of pop in the vain of Supergrass, Brendan Benson, etc . The album is full of fantastic Byrds like harmonies and the more rocking tunes sound a bit like Sloan, or Velvet Crush. So, if your a fan of power pop with nice 60's flavored harmony you will certainly dig this album.

Customer Reviews:
Great heavy rock.......2006-07-08
Other releases from this band are not so great but this is an amazing piece of good old powerful heavy rock. Very catchy melodies and choruses, and of course singer is quite talented as he has shown in his later better known bands Gamma Ray and Primal Fear. Strongly recommended.
