Probably the best album from sadly defunct hard-rockers Kix. Never overwhelmingly popular, their only major hit (the anti-suicide ballad "Don't Close Your Eyes") is on this album. It's a radical departure from most of their material, which consisted mainly of good-time, party-on pop metal infused with genuine smarts and affection for the music. Hailing from Maryland, they incorporated the L.A. glam style into their music while maintaining a grittier edge that owed a good deal to AC/DC. This mix serves them very well on songs like "Get It While It's Hot," "Cold Blood," "Boomerang," "Dirty Boys," and the title track. With considerably more substance than most 1980s pop metal, this album holds up much better than its contemporaries. --Genevieve Williams

4 out of 5 stars Underrated band, Good songs but bad production .......2006-08-01

Blow My Fuse is a good album but not great. Listening to it recently I think it really could have been a great one. Kix had a lot of talent with great songs and great guitar work. Lead singer Steve Whiteman sounds like a cross in-between Axl Rose and Brian Johnson which fits the band very well. Kix was one of the more underrated bands of the hair metal scene of the 80's early 90's. If they had better management and production this could have been superstars. I remember seeing the band live around 1991 or 1992 and the album doesn't capture the band at all.

The album does have some great hooks on it. Epically on the tracks "Blow My Fuse", "Cold Blood" & Get It While It's Hot". The bad areas are Jimmy Chalfant's weak drumming (similar to Fred Coury of Cinderella) and the horrible production. I don't think he was a bad drummer personally, I just think it goes back to the production of the album.

I wish they would have re-recorded this album to make it more up to date like Bulletboys did with the Burning Cats...CD. The production of this album is very 80's and sounds very dated. There's too much unnecessary echo on Steve Whiteman's vocals on every song. If the vocals would have been left alone it would have sounded raw, like Axl on Appetite.

I also think there's too much synthesizer on the album. There biggest hit was "Don't Close Your Eyes" which is a great song but I always find myself skipping into the "meat" of the song due to the lame synthesizer intro.

I never quite understood then album cover either. I know it's an electrical transformer but it's kind of cartoonist and looks stupid. It's bad enough the band had the same name as a kids cereal but the horrible album cover I think had a lot to do with there downfall.

For all the problems you still should still pick it up.

5 out of 5 stars UNDERRATED.......2006-07-28

Let me just say this: If you put Steve Whiteman up against any other vocalist from the '80's metal genre you'd be able to seperate the men from the boys!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Guitar-driven sleaze rock.......2006-06-29

In listening to the history of Kix, from the Shooz to the Generators, this album is a bit of a musical departure for the band. Missing are the tongue-in-cheek euphemisms and naughty wordplay that is Kix's mantra. The band really cuts their teeth on edgy, gritty songs such as "Get it While it's Hot" and "Don't Close Your Eyes" (a HAVE TO HAVE ballad). You can't go wrong with this disc!

4 out of 5 stars Wow........2006-03-01

Okay, this really is not my favorite musical genre, but I must admit that this album did bring me some very genuine auditory pleasure.

5 out of 5 stars This band ROCKS and so does this cd!.......2006-02-26

While stationed in Japan a friend gave me a copied cassette version of this album/cd. Althought the release date is 1989, I had it in 1987?? Not sure how, he said he had a friend in the band. From the first time I listened to it I was hooked. After returning to the states in NC, I had the chance to see them live at The Attic in Greenville in 1988. What a show!! This album still ranks as a must have kick @ss disc for those of us that grew up in the era of hair metal and R&R. BUY IT!

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT CD!.......2006-05-10

I have everthing they've put out and I still think this one is the best. The vocals and backround vocals are simply awesome. The energy and electrifying guitar that go with the great songs on this CD make it a joy to listen to all the time. The title track is still my favorite..."Cry Baby" and "Cold Shower" are 2 other standouts. But every song on this CD is outstanding. Kudos to Kix. They didn't get enough recognition for such a great band. Saw them live twice in Maryland back in the days and they were outstanding. Pick this CD up.

5 out of 5 stars KIX are for Kidz.......2006-01-06

Having grown up in MD and watched KIX as a copy band named Shooze, they always put on an EXCELLENT Live Show. They played much of thier 1st album material in a local night club named Leonardtown Wharf before their first recording contract. Their music was always fun and loud, what Rock-N-Roll is all about. ALL of their releases, Midnight Dynamite included, have that spark with catchy hooks that just reels you in for more of the sound. You gotta have this one!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome AC/DC-styled rock.......2005-06-17

Kix was one of the pop metal bands that unfortunately slipped under the radar of the record buying public, even those who remember them often just remember the song "Don't Close Your Eyes" from the 1988 album "Blow My Fuse." However, those wanting to know more of the Kix story should check out this awesome slab of AC/DC styled rock.

Kix hailed from Hagerstown, MD, a blue collar town that's close to both western PA as well as West Virginia. I grew up not too far from there, and they played at Hammerjacks in Baltimore a lot, plus they recorded their live album (in 1992 I believe) at the University of Maryland, where I eventually went to school.

Anyhow, as I grew up in Maryland, I always had a little bit of knowledge as to who Kix were, and I thought the snippet of the song "Cold Chills" in the Wayne's World movie was pretty cool. This was the 3rd Kix record, and it blew me away. It was a great blend of the straight-up hard rock of 1988's "Blow My Fuse" with the quirkier elements of the first two records still intact.

If you live near the Baltimore area and get the 97.9 FM station (98 ROCK), you may have even heard the tune "Cold Shower", possibly the first rap-metal tune ever (not of the Limp Bizkit variety though - this one is a lot more fun and lighthearted - and 80's sounding). It still gets played every once in awhile too, a testament to the band's awesome local legacy. Plus you get one of the alltime unsung hard rock ballads in "Walkin' Away" - this album is a must buy for fans of AC/DC, Cheap Trick, early VH, and Hanoi Rocks - great rock bands with good tunes and a good sense of humor. Guitar World also called this one of the 20 essential hair metal albums, which sums it up pretty well.

Best Tracks:
"Bang Bang (Balls of Fire)" - Pretty much AC/DC 101 here, with the cool trivia that this was Kip Winger's first songwriting credit (cowritten with the band).
"Layin' Rubber" - Awesome uptempo hard rocker with a few twists, and of course that ever-so-subtle double entendre.
"Walkin' Away" - Put it this way, this is probably one of the top 20 ballads of all time (in any genre). The lyrics are about as sincere and honest as you can get, and when you think you've got it pegged it switches gears and starts rocking hard.
"Cold Shower" - Hilarious, unique, and should have been a hit.
"Sex" - This song just rocks without question, like a great lost Aerosmith tune. Harmonica, a funky & tricky riff, handclaps, memorable chorus, it's all here. Another should-have-been hit!

5 out of 5 stars Baltimore Rocked.......2005-02-27

I've been thinking about this band and the songs on this album since the 80's when I was partiing my *^$# in Baltimore. We use to hang out in a place called Hammerjacks and these guys were a regular there. For the 80's hair bands they were original and have extra kick. I believe at one time they were #1 on the British charts and for good reason. Anyway they bring back great memories but even if I never heard them before I would still think they were a great rock and roll band. There's enough said in other reviews about particular songs so I'll leave it there.

4 out of 5 stars Kix - self-titled (Atlantic).......2007-07-10

Originally released in 1981, as this was the Maryland's pop metal five piece band's first album. Have always really liked Kix, even got to catch them once as support act for Warrant in which they blew off the stage as far as I'm concerned. Tracks here that's sure to wet your appetite to go out and seek more titles by Kix are "Atomic Bombs", "Love At First Sight", the rocking "Kix Are For Kids" (perhaps their anthem?) and "Yeah,Yeah,Yeah". Will give fans of Autograph, Britny Fox, Tuff and Faster Pussycat more icing on the cake. A definite should-have.

5 out of 5 stars Kix are still jamming in my head!.......2007-06-27

Well, I'm 45 now and listening to classical music (no, I haven't given up my rock). I thought I'd try some samples of Kix and sure glad I did. 2 years ago I said Midnight Dynamite was a good album. Well so is this. I wouldn't compare it to AC/DC or most hair bands of the 80s, Cheap Trick comes to mind though. These guys were just plain fun. They kick butt too. I had a great time partying in Baltimore in the mid to late 80s. Hammerjacks, advertised as the biggest nightclub on the East Coast was a great place to catch their performance. If your in to heavy metal this isn't the band for you but if you like good ole rock and roll give em a try and again remember this band is fun and they can rock.

Honey and Sherri if your out there you really left an impression on my neighbors when you left in your hammerjacks attire early in the morning!

4 out of 5 stars Kix..either you got it or you didn't.........2006-05-30

I know that's not very profound, but it's truthful. Kix was a huge presence in the Mid Atlantic music scene in the 80's. Their live shows were always great. It was more an event then just another show. And its very true that Posion studied them and headed west. Yes Kix is heavily influenced by early AC/DC, but they had that New Wave/Punk flavor that made it their own. They were/are considered Hair Metal, but if you listen back to them now, you will hear a modern rock edge.
Yeah, Yeah, Yeah live was an anthem. It was a must to know it word for word..I still do!! "go outside and do that!!"
If you grew up in the 80's and ever made it to Hammerjacks or the Bayou, you knew and loved Kix!

5 out of 5 stars SO VERY UNDERATED.......2006-05-28

I remember hearing this for the first time when I was like 9(hand-me-down from my older brother),I still get that surge when I listen to it today.Punk energy combined with pop hooks ....timelesss.I tend to favor the second side over the first(I still think of the blank tape).Steve is one of the best singers in the history of rock Period.I now listen to everything from the Ramones to Stealy Dan, but this stuff is just great, timeless music that everybody should hear.

CHECK OUT FUNNYMONEY!!

5 out of 5 stars Grossly Underrated .......2006-05-23

Not only is their debut a must have but so is Midnight Dynamite, Blow My Fuse and their Live farewell disc (with the songs No Shame, Girl Money and Cool Kids). From the first time I heard the Itch on 98 Rock in Baltimore to catching their show at Hammerjacks in '87 (the unknown Skid Row opened for them) they have been a huge favorite of mine.

5 out of 5 stars kix, finally a good "hair metal"band.......2006-03-09

Nah,not even hair metal.Just a good band.
Growing up around Baltimore, Kix were the band of the era.
I heard "Same Jane" on the radio the other day,not only does it hold up, I cranked it all the way up.
And this is coming from a "jamband" fan.
Kix wasnt about the trend and hype, they were about good rock music, and they delivered.
They never got the credit they deserved, looking back at the "hair metal" trend, I'm glad they avoided getting lumped in,looked over and thrown into that category.

5 out of 5 stars Oh Man, is this great or What!!!.......2005-12-21

Back in the days (were the 80's really that long ago?) My friend introduced me to Kix 1st lp (yes, vinyl) and Cool Kids and I loved them so, but lost track of Kix after those and only peripherally got into Midnight Dynamite.. Flash foreward to me updating my music collection and getting all the Kix cds and this is the best!! I put it on and its fresh and new but still makes me feel like that long haired knucklhead cruisin' the strip 20 years ago. Boom out of the bat, Hot Wire just kicks your butt with it's super groove and can Steve scream it out or what? Bump the La La and Heebee Jeebee Crush kick hard and fast. But Pants on Fire (liar liar) is the best tune on this infectously fun and funky metal masterpiece. This is not Dio or Iron Maiden, this is catchy good times party metal, and it Rocks just as hard!

3 out of 5 stars Wayne's World.......2005-01-31

I first heard the song "Cold Chills" in Wayne's World and I could've sworn that it was BIlly Corgan singing. It's the scene right before Garth breaks into "Foxy Lady". Crazyness.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Rock Albums I own.......2003-07-31

This is a real rocking album
The video to Same Jane has to be seen - its a classic of the good old days of heavy rock and skimpily clad girl (the girl was amazing)- music was good too!!

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite albums of all time........2001-12-29

It's not very often you hear rock 'n' roll done the way Kix did it. The band's sound is reminiscent to AC/DC in some ways but they are most certainly not a copy-cat band such as groups like Rhino Bucket were; they have a sound of their own.

'Blow My Fuse' (released in '88) was Kix's breakthrough record which gave the band the exposure it deserved by MTV and caught people's attention. I like this album quite a bit but it does not come close to Kix's best record ever (in my opinion), 'Hot Wire'. This is one of those cds that you can listen from beginning to end without ever thinking of skipping one of the tracks. The sound quality is worlds apart from Kix's other records (they really could benefit from a digital remastering) so there is no problem in this department. 'Hot Wire' rocks hard but was never paid its due because by the time the record label released the album in '91, the radio stations and MTV had moved on with pop (New Kids on the Block), rap (MC Hammer, Kris Kross) and was moving past hard rock and glam metal.

The best tunes on this disc are, by far, the title track "Hot Wire" which is magnificent (probably Kix's BEST hard rockin' track ever in my opinion), "Rock & Roll Overdose" and "Girl Money". The musicianship is fantastic--the guitars, bass, drums, lead vocalist Steve Whiteman's voice is great throughout--and if you like real rock 'n' roll but have never even HEARD of Kix, believe me: they rock! And to top it all off, there is even a wonderful ballad "Tear Down the Walls" which everyone can enjoy when you are not in the supercharged rock mode.

I can assure you, there is not ONE track you will want to skip on 'Hot Wire'; this is one of the best albums I have ever bought in my life. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED: I cannot recommend an album any higher than this one; it is fantastic.

????? no 'cold shower'????? no 'ring around rosie'???? this is anything BUT 'essential'!....lie like a rug, baby....

3 out of 5 stars Too Bad.......2006-10-22

Take a careful look at this album photo. This was once a band that had a sense of humor. I saw them many times, in a tiny club in the boonies of Maryland when they were starting out. They were fun to see and very good at what they did. The problem was, like with many bands, they started to cop themselves. The sound got repetitive on later albums and the fun--and smiles--were gone. Too bad.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent place to start.......2006-07-11

Kix were a great eighties band who never got the recognition they truly deserved they were a hair band but had way more to offer musically. This collection though imperfect is a good place to start.

1 out of 5 stars Bad!!.......2003-10-26

Don't waste your money on this cd. It's missing a lot. For example is missing "Get it While it's Hot."

4 out of 5 stars Good Collection of a GREAT Band.......2003-02-06

Kix should have been contenders. They had it all. Steve Whitman, a lead vocalist with style, presence and charisma, an ace songwriter in bassist Donnie Purnell, a stun twin guitar attack, and they were on Atlantic records, home to AC/DC and Led Zep. But no dice. Six albums on Atlantic yeilded exactly two top 100 entries, the breakthrough "Blow My Fuse," and the follow-up "Hot Wire." To quote Kix's best ballad, "For Shame."

The band's hybrid of Zep, Aerosmith and AC/DC should have made them stars in the eighties "hair band" era, yet that is a description that does Kix a disservice. They could certainly rock hard with the best of them, but they knew how to make their rock go pop. Take a spin with the shout along of "Contrary Mary," or the crowd pleaser "Hot Wire." They played up their influences just as well. "Don't Close Your Eyes" (their lone hit single) is pure Aerosmith - think "Dream On" - as much as "Girl Money" is prime Bon Scott era AC/DC.

It's just too bad that this "Essentials" set is limited to a mere dozen songs. A few more choice additions would have made this a five star disc. If this CD turns your ear, then take a go at the debut, a greatest hits album unto itself. As they put it on their second album, Kix were the "Cool Kids." They may have been cool, but the other thing Kix were was SMART...and "Essentials" shows their rock IQ in all its glory.

3 out of 5 stars Not Sure What They Were Going For, Yet Still Passable.......2006-07-30

Kix took a step back with "Cool Kids." While not a bad album, there are only traces of hard rock in the sound and Kix sounds confused over what they hope to accomplish. For some reason, synthesizers are prevalent, which did not really go well with their sound. "Mighty Mouth" and "For Shame" are the only songs that would fit on any of their other albums, and "Get Your Monkeys Out" could be the best cut, if it were allowed to rock out a bit more. The fun vibe is still obvious in the songs, though. Despite an unworthy followup to the excellent debut, the album is not without some merit, and even with questionable material, Kix retained their crown as party rock champions.

1 out of 5 stars more new-wave sounding garbage.......2003-02-15

c'mon "body talk","loco-emotion" what is this...? these guys got so much better after this but this one and the one before this were 4th graders making music in their bedrooms. as one reviewer put it laughable and rightfuly so. get the ones after this which sound so much like the hard rock/metal that was popular then this is....

4 out of 5 stars WAY COOL KIDS.......2003-02-13

This was Kix's pop move.

Just because I said POP move, don't run away. "Cool Kids" was the kind of pop HARD rock that was all over the air waves during the 80's hair band craze. It's a shame that the first half of this disc didn't get the obvious radio play it so richly deserved. Kix had that snappy hook delivery down better than many of their platinum peers. Granted, the title song and accompanying video got some MTV play, and the Atlantic seaboard played the single "Body Talk" half to death. The wave didn't spread, though, and Kix was left on the road to capture more converts.

"Cool Kids" is divided into two distinct halves. There is the the radio ready first half, as exemplified by "Body Talk" and "Loco-Emotion." The keyboards sound forced and the duck quack guitars on "Body Talk" really don't belong there. That doesn't distract that these are still crackerjack rock tunes. They're only teasers to lead us to the heavy half of the album. You could tell you're in for something rougher when Steve Whiteman's screaming intro to "Mighty Mouth" gives way to some fiery guitar. The groove continues with "Let Your Monkeys Out." This "Stranded In The Jungle" styled selection was a live favorite during Kix concerts, but even more of a show grabber was the band's first ballad, "For Shame." Tender and lacking in pretension, this was a stripped down acoustic pleasure before going "un-plugged" was cool. One of these days, this track will be discovered by some movie producer who needs an 80's love ballad for a period piece, and it will become the radio hit it has always deserved to be. And then you get the album's closer, "Restless Blood." Kix's hard rocking bar band roots come through loud and clear here. It's the kind of pounding guitar track that closes an album and leaves you thirsty for more!

"Cool Kids" didn't bring Kix to the mainstream, but it wasn't for a lack of material. If the production on the first half of the record wasn't so gimmickry, this would have been a five star album in the same league as the debut.

1 out of 5 stars laughable.......2003-01-10

After reading such laudable reviews for this album I just had to hear the 30 second clips. I do believe any one of those songs could be playing while the credits rolled for revenge of the nerds or some teen angst movie of the 80's. What a waste of 5 minutes.

1 out of 5 stars laughable.......2003-01-10

After reading such laudable reviews I figured I'd hear the 30 second samples. I believe every one of those songs could fit in nicely while the credits were rolling for revenge of the nerds 3. Truely a waste of 5 minutes.

4 out of 5 stars Just a pretty damn good rock record.......2004-08-30

That is what it is. With one good ballad that features a cello solo. This is an interesting record because Kix knew going in that it may be thier last, and until now it is. They also knew it probably wasn't going to sell or see any airplay, and it didn't. All of this somehow turns out to be for the better. If track #3 (fireballs) every saw the light of day we'd all know that it is just AC/DC's Highway to Hell with different lyrics. Still a great song, but a rip-off. Other stand out tracks are Book of Hypnotize (best song on the disc) If you Run Around (the ballad), Baby Time Bomb, and She Loves Me Not. I don't like too much basic rock and roll, but these guys still bring it too the table here.

4 out of 5 stars KIX is ALWAYS good!.......2003-10-05

This album doesn't rock as hard as it could've and it isn't exactly yer typical rock/metal record in the vein of BLOW MY FUSE or HOT WIRE, but it's interesting to hear the band mix it up, putting a some funky-@$$ grooves in the album like they did on their debut. This album is just as good as any other KIX album, from the AC/DC-like "Fireballs" (Some people have told me they actually thought it WAS AC/DC when I played it for them!) to the cool vocal melodies by Steve Whiteman who is starting to sound rough and gravelly, the bad side of, by now on "Put My Money Where Your Mouth Is", and then there is the piano-driven ballad, yes better than ...Eyes "If You Run Around", and the almost dancy-sounding "Book To Hypnotize" Here, the band comes at you with a varied musical direction, not steering too far from hard rock but like I said before opening up their former minimalist sound with some catchy beats and interesting guitar work. So props to the band, in 1995 they still managed to make an album rock and make it rock well, but for the absolutely stupid "9-1-1" and unneccessary "Ball Baby", I can only give this 4 ol' stars. This isn't the best place to start, but before you're done with KIX, give this a spin. You won't be surprised and you will not waste your money here.

1 out of 5 stars PAINFUL to listen to.......2001-03-18

The reviewer that thought this album rocked must have had a massive coronary when he listened to Kix' other albums. Outside of 9-1-1 this album is garbage. It bears almost no resemblance to the terrific albums that came before it. If you're looking for an awesome rock band (I've always thought they would be a great opening act for AC/DC) you've found one but not on this record. Buy anything else from Kix and you'll be happy.

4 out of 5 stars Baby Time Bomb.......1999-07-10

If You Run Around is a great ballad. Put My Money, 911, Baby Time Bomb, Hypnotize, and I'm Bombed all rock. A graet live band so purchase the Kix Live cd also

3 out of 5 stars SHOW BUSINESS Lacks The KIX Magic.......1999-05-14

These guys rocked for well over 16 years. After six studio albums and a live set, Kix call it quits in 1996. SHOW BUSINESS is the typical "last album." Many great bands, like Kix, end there careers with matterial like this. Don't get me wrong, SHOW BUSINESS has its high points, but to play it from beginning to end is tough sometimes. Steve Whitemans's new band, Funny Money has an indy CD out that sounds like SHOW BUSINESS should have sounded. The last time I saw Kix live was in August, 1995 at the Hagerstown, MD fair grounds. One of the best shows ever! One things for sure...Kix on stage never lost the magic!
