Three stars for Goatsnake, five for Burning Witch.......2005-07-23
Goatsnake represent the friendlier, stoner end of doom -- huge, slow and heavy to be sure, but rarely threatening, and with a disconcertingly sane-sounding vocal style. Their two tracks here grind along effectively enough, but there's a nagging sense of tweeness about Goatsnake that I can't quite shake off. Maybe even a whiff of real ale amid the dope smoke. (We are only talking comparative tweeness here of course. They're not Jethro Tull or anything.)
Burning Witch, on the other hand, are frightening. Not much music frightens me, and most of what does is classical or soundtrack music, but the two 'Witch tracks here are truly nightmarish. It's not just the vocals -- which sound genuinely disturbed, not just metal-pantomime deranged -- or the ear-splitting, unpredictable shards of feedback, or the stuttering rhythms punctuated by gaping silences. It's the sense of sonic adventure that's really shocking in this genre. However ugly it gets, Burning Witch is always musical. Listen to the way the lurching ghost train of 'Bleeder' emerges into near-ambience in the final couple of minutes. It's like some of the genre shifts on Scorn's classic 'Vae Solis', but even more unexpected. I also think these are actually their two best tracks, even better than the still-brilliant 'Crippled Lucifer' collection.
Be warned though, Burning Witch are uncomfortable listening. But if you can take it, there are rewards richer than just having your skeleton rattled.
...and you thought you knew what heavy was.......2001-02-20
ahem. goatsnake boast a thick, tar-like guitar chord manipulation mastery, probably slower than anything ive heard in recent memory, maybe if st. vitus banged a wooly mammoth, you get the idea. they do 1 original, 1 vitus cover on here. the witch, on the other hand, shy away from the slow doom formula, in favor of an offbeat symphony of unparalled beauty and hideousness, coupled with the true sounds of wrath and desparation. if you are into feedback, subharmonics that go beyond "sound", (they actually become malevolent presences in the room) and depression, i would recommend this. an amazing record, easily the heaviest noraa over at hydrahead has ever put out. if you like this, you can find members in :SUNN0))), HOUSE OF LOW CULTURE, THE OBSESSED, WOOL, ENGINE KID, THORRS HAMMER,SINIS STAR,and hmmm....thats about it.
Two crushing worlds collide.......2000-07-03
Truly, an education in bone crushing riffs! The first two songs are by the band goatsnake, one being an original, the second, a cover of "Burial at sea" orinally recorded by doom metal pioneers St. Vitus. The 3rd and 4th songs are by Buning Witch. If you loved Crippled Lucifer, I strongly suggest you pick this up! Not for the faint of heart, but a must have! For those who think Pantera is the most brutal and crushing band around, you ain't heard nothing yet!
