As I lay dying is Metalcore.......2007-04-10
Basically as I lay dying laid out the blueprint for metalcore with the swirling melodic guitar riffs and the timely palm mute chugs which arent over done.
Favorite songs are as follows
Collision - insane hooks, short and sweet
Elegy - Nice high pitch riffs mixed in with the thumping drums
Forever - excellent riffing again with a brilliantly timed melodic
background chorus.
94 hours - once again nice riffing
All the songs in this album have an energetic feel with raw power and melody.
Great album

The Better of the two.......2006-06-03
I have both disc in the series. I liked the music on this disc much more than the first. The selections seem more focused and the sounds are much clearer. Also, the particular pieces fit better together. I love the sound of this group and hope they make more in the future.
Not as good as version 1 in this series.......2004-09-03
This is by the same group who did the wonderful & engaging Early American Choral Music 1. Somehow this CD did not live up to its predecessor in some ways. The performance is still top notch, but somehow the CD as a whole isn't quite as engaging to listen to as the first. Perhaps version 2's strength is also its weakness. Its diversity of composers allows you to pear past the shadow of William Billings and sample other notable early American hymn writers. That exposure is valuable & appreciated. I just couldn't get into it as much.
A final note: many of the texts are beautiful (and available from the publisher's web site). However, I would criticize "Who is this that cometh from Edom?" as dwelling just a bit too much on the Jews' rejection of Jesus. Among other reasons & issues, Christianity says that we are all sinners & there is no cause to single a particular group out negatively.
Same as 'Goostly Psalmes: Anglo-American Psalmody 1550-1800'.......2004-02-21
Please note this CD is a duplicate of His Majestie's Clerkes's "Goostly Psalmes: Anglo-American Psalmody 1550-1800" -- identical contents but a different name and cover. I ordered both and was irritated to discover this. This CD is cheaper, so I recommend this one. It is a lovely choral work from a little-known period of sacred music.

Album Description
With humble beginnings in Baltimore, Maryland, and then solidifying their lineup in Raleigh, North Carolina, the genre-blending sextet called alesana has come a long way in order to bring you their musical vision and incendiary live performance. Exploring the heights of love and the lows of heartbreak and bitterness that often follow, alesana's music strikes a universal chord with audiences around the world. Fans embrace the emotional sincerity and undeniable intensity of the music while reveling in the reckless abandon with which alesana performs. Comprised of guitarist/vocalist Shawn Milke, guitarist Patrick Thompson, guitarist Adam Ferguson, vocalist Dennis Lee, bassist Steven Tomany, and drummer Jeremy Ryan, alesana has quickly became a staple of the burgeoning post-hardcore scene. Metal and hardcore fans are drawn to alesana's gut-wrenching vocals, solid riffs, blasting double bass and intelligent breakdowns. Progressive fans are drawn to their cascading song structures and deft control of dynamics, and emo/pop punk fans are drawn to their catchy hooks and heartfelt lyrics. In May 2005, alesana signed with Tragic Hero Records and began work on their debut EP. The disc "Try This With Your Eyes Closed" was released in mid-June 2005 to an ever-expanding fan base eager to take alesana home with them. Word-of-mouth, internet promotion and online sales have given fans around the world access to alesana, landing the EP in Europe, Australia, Japan, Central America and across the nation. Since the release, alesana has been hard at work playing shows across the region (including the Cornerstone Festival and an episode of the MTV series "My Super-Sweet Sixteen") and writing new material for their first full-length release.
Customer Reviews:
Surprising..........2007-06-25
I must say, I am very, very surprised. I hate Alesana's old albums, but...On Frail Wings is pretty much awesome. Tilting the Hourglass is by far the best song on the album. It's pulled off very, very nicely. Ambrosia is also quite amazing.
Really, though, who'd have thought such an emo band could make such a wonderful record? I really like it. 4.5/5.
It took a while to get this..........2006-10-18
...and if nobody had pointed out to me the inspirations from Greek mythology, I still wouldn't get it.
To start with, Alesana is nothing new. They sound like Aiden, just with more energy, and incomprehensible screaming. Even reading the lyrics while i was listening to the album didnt help, all i heard was some dissonant screams by apparently 3 different vocalists going on at the same time, accompanied by some of the most broken and fragmented guitar work Ive ever heard. The first few times I even tried to listen to it, I was forced to turn it off about halfway through the third track.
Then a friend of mine started talking about it. He pointed out how the first few tracks pay homage to the stories of Icarus and Pygmalion, albeit very brokenly, and I decided to take some notice. Not that Im saying this fact blew me away, but when you hear the music you're expecting whiny songs about heartbreak, when in fact I was getting (though very late) songs about heartbreak when your stone golem decided to hate you. Or songs about why life sucks when youre wax wings have just melted and youre plummeting to earth. Most of this might be me overanalyzing (which I do), but it did interest me.
But I digress. The music is basic. I can't see why they have three guitarists when one or two could have sufficed, I cant see why they have three people screaming when you can't make out a word they are saying, and or why they all look like Davey Havok. If you are a fan of Aiden, My Chemical Romance or bands of that nature, then by all means check this one out. You'll probably love it.
Next Thursday........2006-09-06
Alesana are featured over at Smartpunk.com (with an extra 'S,' no lesss) as of this writing. I sort of take it as a symptom of the times. If you can't quite accept Christina Aguilera as a "maturing musical force with real soul" and care not to listen to hip-hop or the Killers and their many followers, you probably pop versions of Alesana like tabs of acid at Woodstock. For better or for worse.
Looking at it, I notice the song titles. They've got more than one or two words. Think this might be an emo/hardcore band? Hey, "daggers." Not convinced? Elsewhere we have "pathetic," "ordinary" (in the same title) and "hate." But they're just words, after all. Shakespeare invented bunches, which must be why all the bands on the cutting edge try to evoke mirages of good ol' Billy in their dramatic poetry.
Listening to it, it's a mixed bag. There'll be something cool going on with syncopation or breakdowns ("Ambrosia") one minute, but something completely pedestrian and ordinary pops up the next (almost everything else here). Their "Apology" quickly morphs from a weepy, saccharine emo bawlfest into a full-on screamy moshpit exercise. So in a sense, it's got everything the discerning hardcore listener could want in under six minutes.
Maybe for some, the sound of the Chipmunks on the brink of suicide is a refreshing reprieve from the radio, but I've already listened to enough of Thursday to know I don't like them or their ilk very much. Skip it, but if you think the Shakespearian lyrical influence has potential, get the Receiving End of Sirens record ("Between the Heart and the Synapse") instead. Your ears will thank you for years.
Eh..........2006-08-29
This was recommended to me by Amazon because of Trophy Scars. This was just all right for me. I can't say that it was terrible because they aren't exactly a ripoff of everything else but at the same time there wasn't anything to make them special. It's a good idea to listen to some of the songs before you buy this.
nothing new.......2006-07-20
This cd sounds like the normal scene core that is popular now, Although i'd say most closely compares to Chiodos. While this cd does fall well short of Chiodos's Debut full length, it does a better job than many of its other counterparts.

Gay pride taken to absurdity.......2001-09-26
A compilation with no purpose, pasted together (tastefully) from slices of other great CRI releases. Is this supposed to have educational value? Shock value? Wouldn't you rather hear Cowell paired with, say, an openly hetero Charles Ives? Or a complete epic Partch work? Or an entire CD of Cage's Sonatas & Interludes? None of these composers made being gay central to their musical identities. I doubt if they would have done so even in the present era. What next? The Greatest Throbbing Hits of Tchaikovsky? The secret gay composer, artist or poet was no secret to his patrons, friends & most dedicated fans. He even enjoyed certain advantages,
At least the "lesbian" series showcases lesser known women composers who would never have gotten past the hunky bouncer at a Virgil Thomson tea party in 1950.

This is great choral singing, and if you missed it in this incarnation, all is not lost. It has been reissued by Harmonia Mundi's budget label, Classical Express as "Early American Choral Music vol 2 Anglo-American Psalmody 1550-1800". Texts of the songs aren't in the booklet but can be downloaded from the label's website.

Exploring the connections between early music and what we know as folksong, Joel Cohen and his very adventurous and competent band of musicians not only show us where many familiar tunes come from, they also give us fresh and illuminating renditions of songs from the 10th century to the middle of the 20th century. Besides the recording's obvious educational value, its primary purpose, according to Cohen, is "to give pleasure." That it does, often in amusing ways, as when a song with religious origins is transformed into a ribald descendant. It's also fun to see how widespread some songs are, with different versions common to many countries. Cohen demonstrates how songs that came from Renaissance forms were preserved by common folk long after the "elite" classes abandoned them. The songs are enhanced by excellent instrumental playing and well-conceived arrangements. --David Vernier
Customer Reviews:
Charming, simple & striking. Full of delightful surprises!.......2002-11-29
Many early music groups these days explain cross-cultural musical influences in their program notes, and proceed to play their selections accordingly. Joel Cohen and the Boston Camerata take it the logical step further by actually performing the "root" pieces side by side with the later music that reflects their particular influence. The result is inspired, thought-provoking groupings of related tunes and texts that span not only centuries but continents. The Boston Camerata is primarily a vocal ensemble, with a sound that is spare, pure and direct. Some of their renditions are performed a cappella, while others are accompanied by light, period instrumentation. If you've ever heard this group live in concert, you may recall the surreal effect of sitting in a theater that is pin-drop quiet, waiting for one or two musicians at a time to step forward and break the silence with a clarity and presence that holds the entire audience spellbound from first note to last. The effect of listening to this recording is much the same. My favorites on this release are the groupings of different versions of the same ballad--"Three Ravens", "Gypsy Davy", and "Barbara Allen", for example. The pairing of the Appalacian song "Betty Anne" with its exact harmonic match--a 16th century ricercada for viols by Diego Ortiz--is also quite striking, and I also enjoyed the "shape-note" and "Fa-sol-la" singing-school selections representative of early American music. In the insert, director Joel Cohen explains: "This unorthodox recording, an intentionally provocative mix of early art song and modern folksong, is meant first of all to give pleasure - but it is also a meditation on history, on archetypes, and on the transmission of human culture." The Boston Camerata succeeds admirably here on both counts!
Tour de Force of American Musical Roots!.......2001-01-05
Prepare to go on an amazing, haunting musical tour when you put this disc on your player. Joel Cohen (bless him) has once again assembled a group of musicians and singers who are up to the task of taking themselves, and you the listener, back through the mists of musical time. This disc contains songs that span hundreds of years, many of which actually originate in other lands. Yet, these songs would find their way into the early diverse fabric of colonial America, and go on to inspire much of emerging folk music in this country. Some of these songs are secular, but others have a distinctly religious flavor (as in the first piece on Judgment Day and the "stars falling"). Others are merry, dance-like tunes, and remind one of what might have been performed in medieval courts in Europe. Some are sung in english, others in different languages. The range of musical style and vocal interpretation is incredible. This wonderful diversity reminds the listener that America always had diverse roots, and even in colonial times, we were a nation that drew its strength and inspiration from many cultural sources. I like to listen to this disc during the bleak nights of winter, but it is wonderful music for any occasion. If you really are intrigued by the historical development of American music -- or any music -- then this disc is a "must" for your collection. Also recommended: "The World Turned Upside Down" (Barry Philips), "A Land of Pure Delight" (His Majestie's Clerkes), and "Simple Gifts: Shaker Cbants and Spirituals" (Joel Cohen and Boston Camerata).
Astonishing.......2000-03-25
The album is astonishing. It is rare to find a continuous line of musical thought from the turn of the previous millenium to its end. This album demonstrates the evolution of music over about a thousand year period and includes some very early versions of what we would call modern songs.
It is worth the price of the CD several times over and is one of my favorites in my CD collection.
