Suffocation Rules.......2006-11-03
Definitely thier 2 best albums. Punishing technical brutality from start to finish. A must for any extreme metal fan.
EXCELLENT VALUE!!.......2006-05-20
Two great death metal cd's for the price of one this is an excellent bargain.Effigy of the forgotten and pierced from within are two great cd's by one of the heaviest if not the heaviest band of all-time.Buy it today!
Crappy re-release, but SUFFOCATION f*@!ing rules.......2006-01-21
When I heard that these two amazing albums were going to be re-released, remastered and put onto one cd, I was very excited. Unfortunately, it's not worth the money. If you are a Suffocation fan, you probably already own these two albums.
The packaging of this CD is downright pathetic. The insert does not contain ANY lyrics or any additional pictures. In fact, the insert is downright worthless. As for the sound... I cant tell the difference between this CD and the original version. Seems like a money grab for the record company. I would NOT recommend picking this release up.
2 classic death metal albums for the price of one!.......2005-09-15
In my opinion, Suffocation are easily the best death metal band around. There are other great bands out there too, but Suffocation just seems to create music that shows they really know how to make the best technical death metal out there. Every song on here is great and the musicianship and vocals are simply amazing. The production may not have the same quality that Souls to Deny has but that doesn't mean it should lose points for that. Since both of these cds have become harder to find over the years, its nice to be able to get both of them in one convienent package. Overall, I highly recommend this if you are a Suffocation fan or are into death metal at all.
F*CK YES!!!.......2005-02-15
Two brutal technical death metal masterworks for the price of one(both being EXTREMELY hard to get now)??? This has got to be any metalhead's wet dream. This is also the best thing Roadrunner has done within the past ten years (especially since they started sucking in the mid 90's-present), although they could of done a lot better on the layout and included the lyrics in the booklet(keep in mind, i'm reviewing the music, not the format of it). With that said 'Effigy of the forgotten' and 'Pierced from Within' are both equally brilliant technical slabs of brutal death metal and are still unmatchable in their vision and ferocity today! It's just that it all flows together so well, organic sounding in the way that none of it sounds forced and almost amorphous in the way they shift back and forth between various tempos. I must also note that Frank Mullen is probably my favorite death metal vocalist: bar none. Some personal favorites from both albums include "Infecting the crypts", "Liege of Inveracity","Thrones of blood","Suspended in Tribulation", and "Torn into Enthrallment" but hell, they're all good rip-roaring death metal fun, so either get this Roadrunner release(Still sucks that your hard earned money goes to such a now-crappy label) or find the cd's seperate offline it's well worth it!
P.S. They're AMAZING live!

Repetitive, but there were far worse albums during this period.......2007-06-20
The New York death metal scene during the late eighties and up until about '91 or '92 was basically comprised of five or six guys. In other words it didn't have the same scene that central and south Florida enjoyed during this time. And unlike fellow Immolation from Yonkers, Suffocation had formed in the nineties not too long before "Effigy" hit the shelves of record stores. The fact that the band hadn't quite solidified their sound comes across in this record.
From the first track, "Effigy" comes off as a brutal record with heavy guitars, a heavy yet inaudible bass, a vocalist with a range that matches the low end of the bass guitar, and drumming that's as simple as it can get. Frank Mullen's vocals aren't quite of the "cookie monster" variety. In fact, they're quite in their own dimension. I'd call these "constipation" vocals because it often sounds like Mullen is trying to pass a brick. Like the vocals or not, this style of vocal delivery is probably the second most copied style next to the "cookie monster" vocals. The bass is basically inaudible so doesn't deserve comment since I can't hear what the guy is playing. The drumming is about as one dimensional as drumming can get. Mike Smith's drumming consists of double time thrashing and medium paced blast beats (which contrary to popular believe are not difficult to play since all the limbs are doing the same thing.) The drums take down this album a notch. But the one gem to this album is the duo guitar work of Doug Cerrito and Terrance Hobbs. This is something that would get even better with later albums but what is showcased here is pretty good even if it isn't their best work.
The main problem here is this album ain't technical and there is little variance to the songs so only the amazing riffs begin to distinguish songs from each other. If you're new to Suffocation I'd start with "Pierced from Within" and work backwards.
Well said Jester!.......2006-10-11
This is great death metal! Look at it. You have old school(Morbid Angel), brutal(Cannibal Corpse), and technical(Atheist). Now mix all three of those together, and you have Suffocation. Frank Mullen has one of the most guttural growls you'll ever hear in your life. You can literally feel it come from the depths of hell. Our twin axemen Terrence Hobbs and Guy Marchais really know how to shred. Their riffs and solos are both crushing and technical. Derek Boyer is a competant bassist, as one song has a little bass solo. Mike Smith's drumming is really fast. Listen to him tear up those blast beats! I promise you that if you love death metal, no matter what style, this will appeal to you! Play this album at full volume near some emo kids and watch them cry in pain!
Will kill you and your annoying friends.......2006-10-10
If anyone thinks that this is traditional, cookie-cutter style Florida death metal, prepare to be proven dead wrong. Downright jazzy at times, and more technical than a computer manual, these guys will eat you up and spit your bloody remains out onto a table, where a pack of ravens will come and peck at the leftovers.
I suggest starting with this, as it is my favorite, but dont forget Breeding the Spawn and Pierced from Within. And as always, this annihilates Six Feet Under.
Still one of the best death metal albums ever.......2006-09-23
I used to listen to this cd almost everyday. Suffocation cleary makes some of the best heavy metal, bar none. The influence is amazing, and I place Suffocation as one of the most influential death metal bands.
Effigy Of The Forgotten isn't run of the mill death metal, even though it's easy to label them a carbon copy, but that's only because Suffocation's sound had an influence on so many other death metal bands. Only ignorant people who don't know ______ about death metal label Suffocation a carbon copy.
Some people MAY label them a carbon copy, but SUffocation was always imitated, yet no band ever succeded.
Effigy Of The Forgotten might be the most ________ addicting death metal album, I was weaned on it for at least 2 ____________ months. I always thought that Frank Mullen was one of the best death metal vocalists ever, because he was ________ addicting on this. The guitars are also addicting, and the drumming, ________, everything is addicting. It's one of the best death metal albums, basically because everything just goes together so _________ flawlessly. PLus, I thought it was always catchy (death metal is, people are just stupid).
This is THE PLACE to start if you are new to death metal, along with Altars Of Madness. Your missing out on great metal if you do not own this.
10/10
Should Be Worshipped Upon The Throne.......2006-06-10
Suffocation tore death metal a new *sshole with "Effigy of the Forgotten". With insane double bass and technical guitar fury, you'll wonder why people always stick up to these guys, and why nothing like this was released before 1991.
