5 out of 5 stars Crash Course In Brain Surgery!.......2004-12-30

Greetings, All!
Thanks for taking the time to read my review.

This entire album rocks--and rocks hard, baby! In fact, IMHO, this is one of those rare albums where EVERY track is a gem (and we all know how few and far between those are, eh). This is definitely one of my island classics. I agree totally with one Mr. Sullivan's review, herein.

I have been a big fan of Budgie since the mid-70's. And really, you can't go wrong with selecting any Budgie title, as long as Tony Bourge is the guitar player; once Tony left the group, they just weren't the same!

I have always loved Burke Sheeley's rocking vocals. For a while, Budgie seemed like a revolving door for drummers. Pete Boot takes the honors on this wonderful album; and, he is very, very good here.

I own the entire Budgie catalogue, and, as mentioned above, any Budgie album with Tony is outstanding, but this one (if I were forced to pick) is probably my favorite.

The reason this album is at the top of my Budgie list can be summed up in one-word--LIVING ON YOUR OWN! This, folks, is a rock classic. I will go even further and call this a "rock epic." In a way, I'm glad commercial radio sucks so bad, because I feel these special Budgie treats are all ours (the fans), and no one elses. But, that is a bit selfish now, isn't it?

So, you should definitely go out and by this before they become unavailable. And, if you are new to this terrific group, and are just starting your collection, I would advise to start here; you can't go wrong, and you won't be disappointed.

As a side note, you followers of heavy metal--Metallica is on record as having credited Budgie as their major influence. That, right there, should say it all!

So, kids, you rockin' cats--go out right now and get yourself a course in brain surgery--get IN FOR THE KILL. Your neurons will never be the same!

Rock On, Kids,
Dr. Of Style

5 out of 5 stars This really IS "Spinal Tap".......2003-09-10

Not literally, of course, but this IS the band (along with a few others) that the satirical movie "This is Spinal Tap" was modeled after. They have also been copied by many big "metal" bands such as Metallica. If you are a metal fan, and I assume you are if you are reading this, and haven't heard this cd yet, then RUN, don't walk to get it. If you are a blues/rock fan you'll want to grab it also, because these guys really turn some blues inside out here.
This was the 1st Budgie album I ever heard and I've heard almost all the rest since, but none are as good as this one. Every track is worthy of 5 stars except "Wondering What Everyone Knows" (what everyone actually was wondering is how this "early Beatles" sounding tune got on this album). But every Budgie album seems to have that one "La La" track anyway.
I won't elaborate on every track here but I will mention that "Zoom Club" is my personal favorite, with a very innovative guitar part that includes what sounds like Tony Bourge either rapidly unplugging and plugging the guitar jack while getting great feedback or else he just had a short in his guitar cord that he knew just how to tweak. Either way it is some great stuff.

5 out of 5 stars HUMONGOUS GRINDING SLABS OF LAWNMOWER NOISE.......2002-07-27

Which is a good thing, of course, and if you don't think so, you may as well stop reading and go take a look at the John Denver catalogue.

I'll make this short and sweet. Listen to the first (yes, ONE) note of the title track. If you aren't immediately drawn into it and loving it, you have no heavy metal soul. Of course, when the riff kicks in, you'll wonder like I did why Hetfield and Co. didn't cover this tune as well as the two Budgie tunes they DID cover. If ever there was a spiritual successor to Metallica, IN FOR THE KILL was it.

Turn it up. Bleeding makes your ears tougher!

5 out of 5 stars a great lost album.......2001-04-10

I always viewed Budgie as a Sabbath doppelganger and this album sounds the most like the mighty four. The title track unleashes at you with molten riff after riff.Guitarist Tony Bourge sounds like a Tony Iommi with all 5 fingers in place.Crash Course in Brain Surgery kinda sounds outta place(spawned in 1971 actually)but it still rocks mightly.I never really cared for Wondering what Everyone knows,Riding my nightmare would have been a better fit.Zoom Club is where the band really shines for all eternity,a 10 minute jam with some lyrics thrown in sparsly,Bourge really shines on this track with devestating riffing and soloing, the best song of their catalogue in my opinion,I never get sick of this stuff.Hammers and Tongs at first listen sounds like a rip-off of some zep tune i can't remember but to me it's just a logical progression and i love the mid-section of that tune,Burke Shelley is an awesome vocalist once you can get over that high baritone.Running From My Soul is a tidy and short speed rocker with tasty bourge fills.Living on your own is the second next crowning achievement on this great album. With awesome riffing from Bourge and witty vocals from Bourge this song is only second to Zoom Club as the best song of the budgie catalogue.the mid-section of the tune borrows from "beck's bolero",but it's cool to hear that kind of stuff.it melds well with the song.If you don't own this album and you want to go beyond the Sabs, zep and/or purple then do your self a favor and grab this CD,it's awesome.

5 out of 5 stars Budgie still sounds good!.......2001-03-13

This is Budgie's second best effort (after "Bandolier"), great HEAVY music like "In For The Kill", "Crash Course", "Zoom Club", and "Running from My Soul". I had all of Budgie's stuff on old LP's, it wasn't until Metallica's "Garage Inc" rekindle my love for old 70's heavy music, great version's of Crash Course and Breadfan. I was always a great admirer of Tony Bourge guitar playing and Shelly's unique voice and bass playing that gave RAW HEAVY METAL a whole new meaning. Although 70's recording is not is not what it is today, I still find the music ground shaking, head banging and after all these years, unique as no HM band ever. Budgie was really, (in my humble opinion) the best Heavy band of it's time (Zep included, which I also love), guitarist Tony Bourge departure marked the end of the "real" Budgie, although I admired Burke Shelley's attempt to keep the Budgie going, it was never the same without Shelly/Bourge/Phillips.

3 out of 5 stars Memory is merciful.......2006-11-06

Had a few Budgie records in my collection when I grew up. No when I listen to them 25 years (or so) later it's not that good anymore. "Parents" is worth to move to your iPod though.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best the "The Best Of".......2003-01-22

This title is one of the best the "The Best Of" compilations I've ever heard. I own other "best of" CDs but they usually deliver the commercial songs of the band or artist. I don't really know if it's due to the fact that Budgie was not a commercial blast, but this CD shows the essence of the band and is certainly a very good acquisition for anyone who likes true hard rock / heavy metal.

5 out of 5 stars Live at the rockpile.......2002-01-09

Ive been working in the entertainment business for year's(live sound)and had the extreme pleasure of working with budgie back in the 70's.the best of budgie disc is a great representation of songs they wre playing then.THIS BAND is straight ahead no frill's kick [butt] rock at it's finest, and this disc showcases there talent nicely.

...n fan forever

4 out of 5 stars An excellent intro to Budgie's output.......1999-08-07

They may not have been Zeppelin, but they could rock! This album is a good overview of the three albums it covers, but to really appreciate Budgie at their raw, rockin' best, you should get the first, eponymous album - it's basic and brilliant! That said, you should BUY THIS NOW!!

2 out of 5 stars OVER AND OVER AGAIN.......1999-04-21

Boring and sundry, this lazy triad ripped off everyone from Zepplien to Big Star, and did so without even a modicum of success. Tim thought it was the greatest music ever, and he thought he was the greatest lover ever. Nothing cold ever be further from the truth! I hate you! And you owe me sixty dollars idiot!

5 out of 5 stars Masters of Proto Metal.......2007-06-11

Budgie's first 5 albums are classic must have for those interested in metal's evolution. This being the first from the Welsh trio of bassist/vocalist Burke Shelly, guitarist Tony Bourge, and drummer Ray Phillips. You will forget about the overplayed Zep/Sabbath burn outs on the radio when you hear this. Amazingly fresh upon first listen and then on as well, from the opening track Guts, the prog flourishes of The Author, Rape Of The Locks (about cutting ones hair!) and All Night Petrol there isn't a single weak track. Budgie on all their albums take small breaks in the thunder for timid folk numbers, making their primary line up of cuts all the more heavy. Budgie is also known for oddly humorous song titles and Nude Disintegrating Parachutist Woman was the first, it's the masterpiece of the album followed up closely behind by the ending anthem Homicidal Suicidal. The production may sound dated, but the primitive sound only adds to the gritty metal sound this intelligent band pounds out. They take their cues from obvious power trios of the day Cream, and Blue Cheer, but Budgie have one of the most unique sounds in rock n roll/heavy metal. Simply essential

5 out of 5 stars Life-altering sonic experience. .......2007-04-20

This is it.

THIS is what rock 'n' roll is all about. This is rock in it's most raw and primal form. This is Budgie's debut album. Forget about the overplayed, so called "classic" corporate garbage FM rock radio shovels down your throats, just get this. Radio never gave Budgie a chance, ever, which is a shame, though maybe i should be thankful at the same time. Budgie's debut is heavily Cream/Sabbath/Blue Cheer influenced, and it's evident in Burke's evil sounding sludge-fuzz bass tones. God, at points i though it was Jack Bruce playing! Tony Bourge, obviously taking more then a few pages out of the "How to sound like Tony Iommi" manual, bombards your ears with a veritable riff-fest. Ray Philip's Jazz/hippie rock goat skin bashing ows a debt to Blue Cheer. It all comes together to make an essential early "proto-metal" album.

I was totally won over by this album and band. People who are into 70ies rock but want something else besides the standard Zeppelin/AC/DC/Aerosmith/Rush "Radio HiTz" rock should check this one out.

These Birds rock!

4 out of 5 stars Budgie.......2005-12-30

What can you not like about this band? This was one of the first recordings I heard by this band and that was over twenty years ago. It is dated and the drumming is lame, but they are Budgie and they just get better and better, so this is the place to start...

5 out of 5 stars You need this album now!!.......2005-11-03

Of course, like everyone else, I had heard of Budgie via Metallica. I found this album literally by accident. I wasn't even looking to buy anything but this cd happened to catch my eye so naturally I bought it. This was back in 1992. Now here it is 13 years later and I still love the album, from start to finish!! This album is responsible for Soundgarden, Van Halen (they used to cover "In For the Kill" in their bar-band days!), and of course Metallica. Every song is a winner, and I mean EVERY SONG! They can jam out without sounding self-indulgent. They can write a lilting ballad without sounding mushy. And naturally they CRANK everywhere else on the album!! Do yourself a favour and scarf up this album. You'll be glad you did!

5 out of 5 stars Who The Hell Is Budgie?.......2005-02-13

Budgie is a 70's power rock group. Bassist/Lead Vocalist Burke Shelley deserves credit for being one of the most influential frontmen of the seventies and eighties. Their tone is very mellow and yet very *lightning bolt*. Guitarist Tony Bourge's ability to make the guitar "talk" can later be found with guitar players such as Joe Satriani, and Zakk Wylde. If you favor that kind of music, you won't be disappointed by Budgie.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars 3 and 1/2 star effort--aged well in some spots, not in others.......2006-08-18

Welch rockers Budgie swoop through the hard rock spectrum on their solid third album "Never Turn Your Back on a Friend." There is plenty of pile-driven rock balanced by their nod at the mandatory ballads that seemed to crop up on most hard-rock albums of this era.

At their best, as when they finally get down to business in You're The Biggest Thing Since the Powdered Milk, Budgie can hold serve with the best of its day. But it's the getting down to business part that makes many songs infuriatingly hard to listen to.

The nearly two-minute drum solo altered by cheesy Doppler effects that opens Powder Milk is a case in point. There are too many sudden changes in direction in too many songs, changes that seem not as thought our or well-executed as by other bands of this time (unlike, say, Family's wonderfully complex Spanish Tide from "Fearless").

And ultimately, I have to concede that Burke Shelley plays a mean bass but that his vocals fray my nerves at times. Budgie's cover of Baby Please Don't Go falls short because his high-pitched voices don't have the grittiness this song needs.

Still, I really like a lot of what's here: In the Grip of a Tyrefitter's Hand is just the type of song that really sounds good coming through some vintage JBLs, and Parents conveys the shifting tides of life that haunt us all.

To me, this is a three and a half star effort, a solid album that has aged well in some spots, not in others.

5 out of 5 stars Out of the Nest.......2005-03-13

Budgie comes into their own with their third studio release. Their hard rocking style and songwriting personality is fully developed with an album full of great songs. The best songs are: Breadfan, Baby Please Don't Go (cover), You're the Biggest Thing Since Powdered Milk, In the Grip of the Tyrefitter's Hands, and Parents. Match this with BANDOLIER and you've got the band's two best overall albums.

5 out of 5 stars BUDGIE TAKES FLIGHT!.......2002-02-04

With their third album Budgie came up with their first masterpiece. Every song is memorable and made this the album that should have put them on the map to stay. There is the wonderful Roger Dean cover art, the energetic sound, and seven masterful songs. The two earliest Budgie songs I remember hearing in San Antonio are here: "Parents" and "Riding My Nightmare". The great music doesn't stop there, though, there is the definitive "Breadfan" and the excellent cover of "Baby Please Don't Go". There is the ballad, "You Know I'll Always Love You", which has a rich sound to it and "You're the Greatest Thing Since Powdered Milk". Budgie manages to once again have some strange titles and lyrics, but this time they have woven a tapestry to catch and inspire the listener's imagination.

If you know Budgie and don't have this, shame on you! If, however, you are new to the sound of Budgie, or, are looking for a place to start, this is it! You can't go wrong with NEVER TURN YOUR BACK.... After buying this you will definitely pursue other discs by Budgie. This is an addictive album! There is great guitar work here, electrical and acoustic. The bass and vocals, as always, are envigorating and flawless. Catch the fever; go Budgie!

5 out of 5 stars NEVER TURN YOUR BACK ON MOTT.......2001-11-09

The release in 1973, of "Never Turn Your Back On A Friend" was the band's third studio L.P. It proved to be a major mile stone in the long, hard gigging career of Welsh rockers Budgie. It also established their hard rocking style with the drums and bass thumping along together and Tony Bourge's lead guitar work ruffling even the largest feathers.
The first song off the perch was to become Budgie's standard bearer, "Breadfan". It opened with Tony Bourge's rocking guitar, then the bass and drums come thundering in with the fuzzy crunch of twelve thousand banging heads. Add to this Burke Shelley's very high pitched, quintessential 70's metal singing (reminiscent of Geddy Lee of Rush but much sharper) and this heavy metal bird takes flight.
Metallica tried to cover this song on their "Garage Inc". This revealed them to be the rather sad `covers' band that they are.
However, Budgie deliver it all in true hard rock style, pacing the album nicely with two acoustic songs to break up the heavy metal bluster. I'll even forgive the one minute thirty eight second drum solo at the beginning of the fourth song as it's so short, sharp and heavy.
It's the final song "Parents", which is a supersonic power rock ballad that elevates you through the stratosphere. A song very similar in structure to "Led Zeppelins" "Stairway To Heaven", Burke Shelley sings of the torment of turning from child to parent, hitting the heart fair and square with Mott who has a few puppies of his own. This song alone makes this album worth hunting down.
The parents tell their children, "Wash your hands & up to bed, mind your manners or you're dead, watch the cars `cos you got school on Monday". Haven't all parents at sometimes spoken in these jumbled spurts of love and warning?
Though they never reached the dizzy heights of success like Deep Purple, Black Sabbath or Cream, Budgie did leave behind 10 hard rocking studio albums. Really, this is a million heavy metal dreams from their wild concerts attended by their substantial live following.
Budgie also specialized in wonderful album and song titles. As well as the ones on this album, there was also "If I was Brittania I'd waive the rules", "Impeckable", "Nude disintegrating parachutist woman" and "Hot as a dockers armpit". This, at least, proves that the boys from the valleys had a sense of humour. Well, you try fitting those words in a chorus!
Add to this Roger Dream's stunning artwork and you always got the complete package with this bird.
This is one Budgie this Dog will never mess with.
Mott the Dog.

excellent stuff; from an excellent yet ominously overlooked band. a majority of budgies material is killer and has a uniqueness. They are an ecclectic
group; to say the least. Even though all these tracks on this album are out of this world; only one can show there flair to cover ballads and heavy hitters. Napoleon part one and part 2 is living proof of there uniqueness and abilities. It is a microcosm of the greatness that was there. Yet tragically never came to fruition from this cultish like following having band. They deserved at least what there contemporaries of the time received. Rush Zeppelin and Sabbath. There sound was every bit as strong. Now that I have blown steam on there behalf. Pick this album, cd, tape or 8 track up. Whatever means neccesary listen. U will be impressed. Unless ur deaf of course.

Bandolier by Budgie is one of the best hard rock lp's/cd's during the 70's.This band is one of the founding fathers of NWOBHM baNds and very influential.(ask Metallica)

on 'Bandolier' the production is first-rate and a cut above the earlier releases (In for the kill,Never turn yourn back...)

"Break all the house rules", "Napoleon Bona-Part 1", and the gem of this set "I can't see my feelings" was the pre-cursor of the power metal trio's of the day.Burke Shelley's bass playing and high pitched vocals influened bands afterward who had even more sucess than Budgie. Can you say Geddy Lee and Rush? Tony Bourge's guitar playing is outstanding, and compares to Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath's, but with more of a melodic feel.

This band has had many great releases during their career, and still occasionally play the states, as well as their homeland of Wales and Great Britian.

This is one of the essentials to any hard rock collection....

FOR LOVERS OF OLD SCHOOL HEAVY ROCK. VERY RECOMMENDED

5 out of 5 stars Budgie's Best Recording.......2004-02-05

Growing up in the Heavy Metal mecca of San Antonio, Texas in the late 70's and early 80's, I had the opportunity to hear Budgie on 99.5 KISS (remember DJ's Joe Anthony and Lou Roney?) in addition to the mainstream bands of the time (Moxy, Rush, Lone Star, UFO, Riot, etc). To this day, Bandolier still remains the best Budgie recording. I recently obtained it on CD and it absolutely blew me away the same way it did when I was a kid. Tony Bourge's guitar playing is as fresh and original today as it was almost 30 years ago. Bourge has been imitated by many but matched by none. The title track "Breaking all the House Rules" simply rocks, especially when it transitions to Burke Shelly's bass line with Bourge's guitar in the background. Slipaway is a melodic masterpiece. Who Do You Want For Love set the standard for the grunge bands style of the early 90's, starting soft and then injecting fast and furious guitar work. I Can't See My Feelings: Try not playing your air guitar to this one! I Ain't No Mountain got tons of airplay in SA, listen and you'll know why. Finally, we come down to Napoleon Bona-Parts 1 and 2. The opening acoustic guitar works spellbinds you, only to be brought back crashing to earth by Bourge's electric guitar as the song transitions to Part 2. Only downside to this fine recording is the playing time, clocking in at a little over 36 minutes. Nevertheless, the quality simply outweighs the quantity. Don't waste your money on any Budgie recordings after 1978's Impeckable. If you purchase only one Budgie title, make it Bandolier. You will not be disappointed.

You just need this CD. Progressive Rock, Hard Rock, Psychedelia. This little bird held it all firmly in its tiny claws. Why is it that the best bands are always so damn obscure?

5 out of 5 stars Rocking Men Indeed!!!.......2003-06-06

Whoever says this is not an innovative, great(one of early metal's best)album; is a poser who needs to go to Metal 101. Budgie may have been one of the most influential metal bands of this period. Priest, Maiden, Kiss (listen to the rhythm played on bass in the middle section of "Rocking Man", then listen to "100,000 Years" and tell me Paul Stanley didn't steal it!!) all heavily borrowed from the Budgie riffology. There is variation with melotron, a couple Beatlesque acoustic numbers along with the typical Budgie heaviness of "Whisky River", "Rocking Man" and "Hot As A Docker's Armpit", and the epic "Young Is A World". The production is very stone age but an improvement over the debut. I own all the Tony Bourge era albums with the exception of "Never Turn Your Back On A Friend" and this one is my favorite.

2 out of 5 stars No wonder it's forgotten..........2003-05-29

Listening to this album, you'll get a clear idea why this band wa buried forever in "underground". It's a pedestrian, generic and hardly innovative metal band. None, absolutely none of the songs are memorable.

Their only quality is their leader, Burke Shelley, who really has a great voice.

2 out of 5 stars Most of the time it's average rock without a thrill.......2003-05-16

The rockers on the album is nothing special but of rather mediocre or average standard. The real highlight are the slower acoustic "Rolling home again" and "Make me happy", and especially "Rolling home again" is good, very good!

4 out of 5 stars The Most Underrated Heavy Metal Band Of All Time?.......2002-07-27

BUDGIE, from Wales, were comprised of Burke Shelley on Bass & Vocals, Tony Bourge on Guitar, and Ray Phillips on drums. Phillips was later replaced by Pete Boot and then Steve Williams. Bourge's spot was taken by Big John Thomas in the 80's. Thomas was a fine guitar player, but Bourge has a distinctive style that makes the recordings which include him much more memorable.

SQUAWK was the group's second album, following on the heels of their self-titled debut. The highlight is probably HOT AS A DOCKERS ARMPIT, a vicious rocker with riffs out of some Tony Iommi wet dream. The rest of the album is good heavy rock with a couple of nice (short) accoustic numbers thrown in for variety.

My suggestion, if you've never heard this group before, would be to start your BUDGIE listening with either "IN FOR THE KILL" or "NEVER TURN YOUR BACK ON A FRIEND", both superior albums to this one. Then, start picking them off in chronological order. By the time you reach the last Bourge album, "IMPECKABLE" - 1978 A&M, you'll be as big a fan as me and James Hetfield!

4 out of 5 stars 5 Stars for the Heavy trax-3 for the lighter ones.......2007-07-18

It is so good to have Budgie back delivering quality hard Rock to my ears again. This CD, as with most Budgie CDs, mixes Classic Hard Rock with Melodious Ballads. I just wish the CD was made up entirely of the Harder edged tunes as the majority are KILLER. I enjoyed many of Budgies Ballads from the past (Heaven knows our name/Riding my nightmare/Don't go away etc), but those were all in the 70s, and times have very much changed. If they were to continue this process for their NEXT release (Lets not have another 25 year wait Guys), how about a double album with one disc ROCKING and the other to smooch to? I think Burke's vocals have stood the test of time much much better than any of the other old school Warblers (Plant/Gillan/Ozzy etc) and would have to compare his durability to that of Steve Tyler. Just check out the "Live in San Antonio" CD. His voice really does stand out well considering the songs he performed which required extreme effort. Hey! Just imagine Ian Gillan singing "Child in Time" today in the manner it was sung in 1972. I think not!!
The recommended hard rock tracks you need to check out from the CD are:
JUSTICE/DEAD MEN DON'T TALK (Big time Groover)/FALLIN'/(DON'T WANT TO) FIND THAT GIRL (Great rhytmic feel here)/I DON'T WANT TO THROW YOU (Reminded me a bit of "Sweet Emotion")/I'M COMPRESSING THE COMB ON A COCKERELS HEAD (Just check out Burke's vocals on this one-Wow!)
The Ballads, as has been mentionned, give the CD an uneven feel. This really could have been one Hellbender of an Album, but as we know, Budgie don't waive their rules. Keep on Rockin' Lads, and hope to see you again soon.

3 out of 5 stars This ain't the '70s, bird brain.......2007-06-18

Budgie released some gems 30 years back. "Never Turn Your Back On A Friend," "In For The Kill" -- dynamite. "Bandolier" -- fantastic. And such fun. Wouldn't it be something if the band's 2006 album, "You're All Living In Cuckooland," sounded like those '70s titles? It would indeed be something -- something inexplicable. Vocal chords have aged. Personnel have changed. We've entered a new century, no less.

Budgie have evolved, which of course they'd have to to have a new(ish) album. The new does have some in common with the old. Lots of big guitar. [The new(ish) guitarist, Simon Lees, is good.] Vocals by Burke Shelley -- recognizable, though (understandably) less nimble. Quirky song titles. Interesting cover art. And Steve Williams' drumming.

The result is a solid album (3 1/2 stars) and a bit of redemption from Budgie's rather run-of-the-mill recordings in the early 1980s. New feathers. Wings flapping.

3 out of 5 stars The track arrangement is cuckoo.......2007-01-06

Everyone got used to that edgy raw sound this group produced in the past. Over time they have created a different sound. If you listen to the whole thing track 1-10 it does'nt flow as good as it could which is the only detraction. Like all their albums, you go from a jammmin' song to a melody. Anyhow, if you're in a music rut this release ought to wake you up if you crank it up! After a few listens it grows on you. They can still rock after all this TIME.

5 out of 5 stars BUDGIE Still Rocks!.......2006-01-05

Having heard BUDGIE for the first time in the mid-70's, I was VERY impressed then and still am today. The guitarist on this album is a mixture of Toni Iommi (Black Sabbath), Rick Emmett (Triumph) and Alex Lifeson (Rush). The guitar tracks will spin your head. They are labeled by some as a metal band but back in the 70's they were considered Hard Rock at the heaviest. BUDGIE went on to influence many guitarists of other genures which is a testament to the talent of this 3-piece band. If you seek a 70's based Rock band with MUCH talent, take a listen to "If I Were Brittania" and all the previous releases.

5 out of 5 stars Another Classic from the British Rockers.......2003-12-14

I got this album on CD recently, when I decided that my turntable needs to be retired. Definitely one of the best Budgie albums from the "middle" period, good rockers and ballads which have not really aged much in 25 years or so. Given the outrageously short playing time, I would like to have got it on one CD combined with the equally good Impeckable. Budgie never really made it big in UK, although they were deservedly appreciated in Europe. Does that prove something?

4 out of 5 stars Budgie Waives The Bloody Rules!!!!.......2002-02-11

Though not as consistent as most of the albums from their "classic" period with Tony Bourge on guitar, I can't rate any Budgie with Bourge lower than 4 stars. The title cut is the standout with more tricky changes in rhythm and feel than you can shake a stick at.A few things like "Anne Neggen" the opener are a little average for Budgie."Sky High Percentage" and "Black Velvet Stallion" are fine heavy moments. It looks like most of the reviews on this page (including another one of mine)are actually for the Impeckable album and listed with the wrong record.

    5 out of 5 stars Budgie Lives!.......1999-04-07

I listened to this album when it was new and thought they would make it bigtime. What happened? Now that M****ica says they listened to Budgie, everyone will go out and buy it and see what they've been missing. The guitar solo alone, in Black Velvet Stallion, is worth buying this CD for.

5 out of 5 stars Budgie was an amazingly good metal band........1999-01-14

Although Budgie never got the recognition that they deserved, they are finally having some degree of praise, thanks to Metallica, another excellent band many of you may have heard of. Budgie,a three piece band from Wales, played some of the most intense, yet subtle hard rock that should have been extremely popular with the masses, but sadly was not. Budgie's If I Were Brittania... is a timeless classic that sounds as fresh today as it did in 1976. Fans of Zeppelin, Rush and other powerful metal bands will love the best undiscovered power trio of the 70's,Budgie. Just remember to-CRANK IT UP.
