If Deep Purple had read too much Robert E. Howard, they might have turned into Uriah Heep. Sure, Heep were named after a Dickens character, but we don't recall too many demons and wizards in David Copperfield. The band's fantasy-filled lyrics and operatic prog-metal was often a cheap target for critics. But it's hard to deny the adrenaline-soaked pleasures of rave-up hits such as "Sweet Lorraine," "Easy Living," and "Look at Yourself," which are rounded out here by "Sunrise," "Gypsy," and plenty of other gaudy gems from their early '70s heyday. --Billy Grenier

Really believe this CD's title is meant to be like a corporate ca$h cow. Didn't fool me for a minute.Twelve tracks of Uriah Heep's early works. It's always great to hear these early '70's hard rock gems, like "Gypsy", the wailing "Lady In Black", "July Morning", "Sweet Lorraine" and their only two hits (at least here in the U.S.) "Easy Livin'" and "Stealin'". Simply LOVE hearing either of those tunes on an album rock station at 3am. Obviously aimed the towards the completists.

Do like rock and roll that's supposed to be fun, make you feel good, and make you smile? If you do, you might want to try this Uriah Heep collection. You'd never know it if you only listen to contemporary classic rock radio in the USA, but Uriah Heep were a potent live act in the early 1970s and recorded several gold albums. What did they sound like? If you can imagine a garage band doing a Deep Purple impersonation, you have a pretty good idea. They're definitely worth a listen if you're looking for music that doesn't take itself seriously.

The standouts on this compilation include a trippy ballad about "The Wizard," the fast paced shuffle "Easy Living," the Woodstock-era "July Morning," and the bluesy "Stealin'" whose rock-and-roll-as-outlaw-cowboy predates both McCartney's "Band on the Run" and Bon Jovi's "Dead or Alive." This CD represents the cream of Uriah Heep's early career and serves as a jumping-off point for exploring their (admittedly uneven) albums. All feature powerful keyboard arrangements and tongue-in-cheek lyrics.

Music like this is a great antidote for the largely humorless exercise modern mainstream rock has become. Uriah Heep will never win awards for originality, but there were few bands who seemed to absolutely enjoy what they were doing more than they. To me, their fannish enthusiasm is contagious. I hope you agree.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Single Disc Compilation, But............2004-09-06

If you only have enough cash for a single disc "best of" from this great & under-rated 70's band, this Millennium Collection is the definitley the way to go. The 1976 "The Best Of Uriah Heep" is a good single disc album, but only features 9 tracks compared to the 12 offered here. Plus the sound on the Millennium release is much better. My personal advice, however, is to scrape up the extra cash and purchase the vastly superior 2 disc set, "Classic Heep: An Anthology". "An Anthology" contains a whopping 30 tracks and gives a much better musical representation of Uriah Heep. If you're on a tight musical budget though, opt for this album and save you cash for the "Uriah Heep Live - 1973" cd.

This CD will light your shorts on fire! You will be floored by the intensity of this CD! You will be singing to this CD and pretending that you are in the band! You will go psyco in a positive way from the genius that awaits you in this CD. What I am trying to say through all this nonsense and "crap" is that this CD is a must have for fans of Rock 'N Roll. Some of the best Rock 'N Roll songs that have ever have been writen have been writen and performed by Uriah Heep. Uriah Heep is so cool! They are one of the best bands ever! Check out this album! You will not be disapointed! I guarantee it!

5 out of 5 stars The Original Uriah Heep Greatest Hits.......2006-07-30

I used to have this on an 8-track tape so it is the authentic, original greatest hits of the so-called "classic" lineup! This and early Queen were probably in my car 8-track more than anything else throughout my high school years. Talk about music to pump you up. For me it is a great blend of beauty and power--and that's what I love most in music. Of course, countless others have come along with a similar sound (but not the heart) so it doesn't sound as fresh as it once did, but it still provides a lift when you want some hard-driving music!

That's the story of this CD, and all I can say for a "review" is that there are no bad songs on this CD. Lady in Black goes on a little long for me, but... Overall, it's got great songs from beginning to end. No fill, as many very good songs on their albums did not make the final cut! You know, the Heep were a favorite target for many "critics"--probably because they existed in the shadows of Led Zepplin and Deep Purple, but they were a fun bunch of guys who made you feel good. Great heart. Great power. Four All-Star musicians in this lineup: David Byron's vocals, Mick Box's guitar, Ken Hensly's keyboards, and Gary Thain's bass (one of the most fantastic bass players I know of!) Not being a drummer, I'm not sure where Lee Kerslake's drums rank, but they do a good job of supporting the others! Of course, when the lineup changed, everything else did as well... They tried to keep the spirit alive, but... But this "Best of" comes from the best of times for this band.

And I could swear I remember "Stealin'" being on the 8-track version at least, and seeing a couple of reviewers here mentioned it being left off, I think there may be some stinky marketing afoot. The old greatest hits "leave one off for the next compilation" gimmick?

Now all the songs included are great. BUT-n the disc is shamelessly short- it doesn't even go further then to 1972, while
the band was in their prime (more or less) up to 1976's Firefly.
Not enough. Even some of the best songs by Heep from the era this album represents are missing. Look elsewhere.

Two questions that have always, and will always, plague mankind: How can you release a best of Uriah Heep album that omits "Stealin'" and a best of Free that omits "Wishin Well"? This may be a worthy album for the casual Heep fan who's only going to buy one of their albums, but for the more serious listener, "Classic Heep: Anthology" is the one to get. Crucified by the critics but adored by hard rock connoisseurs, Uriah Heep is the Rodney Dangerfield of metal.
