This twofer compendium--which contains all the songs from the Cro-Mags' first two albums--can serve as an ideal introduction to this tough-as-nails Gotham band, which swerved from brute-force hardcore to slightly more sophisticated thrash between the recordings. The Age of Quarrel material, sung by John Joseph, is pure street-thug hardcore--"Show You No Mercy," "Do unto Others"--that's heavy on both declarations of scene unity and threats against those who aren't part of the scene. Most tracks clock in under two minutes. The band stretches out on the Best Wishes songs, which see bassist Harley Flanagan taking over on vocals. More metallic in tone, à la Anthrax, the "new, improved" Cro-Mags prove themselves capable of kicking out the jams guitarwise and even provoking some thought through Flanagan's Krishna-conscious lyrics. --David Sprague

Ok..''THE AGE OF QUARREL'' is one the most PISSED OFF ALBUMS EVER MADE!!! and is one of the most OVER LOOKED ''cross over'' albums..EVER!!!

The singer(Eric..right?) was one of the best vocalists I think I have ever heard!!! listen to the song ''LIFE ON MY OWN'' he sounds like he killed him self after that one verse ''You come INTOOOO this world..'' its AMAZING!!! that song is also like one of the best ever wirtten!!!HAILS!!!!!

This stars off with ''WE GOTTA KNOW'' which is a perfect starter GREAT epic intro and feel!! this is also the first thing I ever heard from the guys..saw the video of it on LOUD music.. many years ago!!

All of the songs are great..some better than others..but I think we all have our faves!!

And of course this was made in 1986!!!!!!!1986!!!!!!! you cant get more pissed off than that!!! THIS IS TIMELESS THOUGH!!!!! but the 80's did RULE!!!!!!!

YES ! THIS ALBUM " BEST WISHES " KILLS. WE ALWAYS LISTENED TO AGE OF QUARREL WHILE EVERYONE GOT IN THEIR POSITIONS FOR A FREE FOR ALL KILLJOY ! THE SPRING OF 1989 WAS A THRASHING TIME AND ME AND SOME FRIENDS GOT INTO PAINTBALL. A HURTFUL SPORT THAT LETS OUT SOME AGGRESSION. WE WOULD PUT THE SPEAKERS ON TOP OF THE VAN, CRANK UP THE BASE AND PUT THE TREB. AT 6 AND POP IN CRO MAGS BEST WISHES TAPE AND WOULD PLAY AGE OF QUARREL. ONCE THE SONG WAS OVER WE WOULD DESTROY EACH OTHER IN A PAINFUL EVENT "SHIRTLESS" . THIS BAND WOULD PUMP YOU UP WHILE YOU WERE DECIDING WHO TO KICKASS ON FIRST. GREAT BAND AND ALBUM. NO PAIN, NO FUN.

4 out of 5 stars Another wonderful Hardcore Band.......2005-09-08

Anything by another Hardcore forefather is worth a listen. The older stuff is raw, but you can get and idea of where they were headed.

5 out of 5 stars "Survival of the streets"..........2005-03-10

I bought these two huge hardcore albums more a decade ago (LP versions...) and I still find it to be essentials of that very special musical style... "So, don't miss the occasion to get them in one CD!" Just because Cro-Mags was at his apogee during the eighties, and these guys were real... and not fake! They were talking about what they were really experiencing : pain, anger and hunger! You should see these two albums as a testimony concerning the new york city hardcore scene of that period...

1 - The Age of Quarrel : If you like oldschool hardcore, I guess you probably have this one in your possession but if you are eager to discover what hardcore meant in the late eighties (raw, fury, political lyrics and INSPIRED music!), you shouldn't ignore 'The Age of Quarrel'... All is said in fifteen 'bullets'. John Joseph is the definitive frontman of Cro-Mags. He is really mesmerizing in it. With the help of Harley Flanagan and Parris Mayhew, he delivers an astonishing performance we can hardly forgot... This album is so good that it's really hard to name the best songs... Just an example : the intro of the 'We gotta know' is simply amazing... No less than that...

2 - Best Wishes : more metal oriented and Flanagan is now singing (quite good, I have to admit). The band clearly refused to do a "The age of quarrel : the return" or "part II..." and decided to explore new musical territories with excellent results. I had some difficulties to accept it then. But now, I think it was the best thing they could have done and "Best Wishes" contains superb hardcore-metal classics... ('Death camps' is my favourite but 'The only one' is a great and touching (!) song too...

Needless to say, with these two superb albums, The Cro-Mags influenced innumerable hardcore bands around the world...

5 out of 5 stars you think all these lamers today are hard?.......2004-01-03

this is the original hardcore/metal band! this album was made specifically for people to mosh and beat the piss out of one another and spit on their lifeless body afterwards. my recommendation: do a few lines of coke, don your combat boots and find a fat girl. enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars The real deal, thoroughbred NYC Hardcore.......2005-11-12

. I saw them live in Paris, France, after a day of skateboarding with a busted ankle, and seeing John Joseph stretch in preparation for the concert, man those were the good days, they were so good live.....I was very attracted to the lyrics, Indian mythology graphics and amazing krishna tattoos they had. Here I am 14 years later, I got krishna tattos, and I still make sure I rock hard, I'm glad the Cro Mags were a part of my life as they gave me mental strentgh and stamina.... "The Age of Quarrel" is the original lineup of the Cro-Mags (John "Bloodklut" Jospeh, Harley Flanagan and Paris Mayhew),John Joseph has great vocals and he bring all of his notorious attitude forth, smae can be said for their legendary Bass player Harley, the man with the devil holding planet earth - tatood on his chest. The album is so real, you can smell the concrete of New York City, not the lame town of today, but the unforgiving, exotic, dirty, real and energetic New York of the 80's....Before there were posers and whiny dirtballs, there were the cro-mags, the real bad-asses of New York.... Unfortuntaly, the band shatterd afterwards into lesser bands (mediocre to say the least, but still with a great presence), speeking of which: the only good album done after Alpha-Omega belong to Harley-Flanagan's "White Devil", it's a 5song EP, and it's amazingly good, but good luck finding it...

5 out of 5 stars Classic Noo Yawk hardcore!.......2005-02-09

This is the best hardcore album ever realeased! This is to NYHC, New York Hardcore, what "Illmatic" is to hip hop or "Kind of Blue" is to jazz, at least when Miles Davis was still loved by the jazz purists. Released in 1986 this album set the starge of the "NYHC" explosion, which yes is extinct in 2005, today there is horribl emetal and indie bands ruling the NY clubs, including CBGB's where the Cro Mags did their thing! Of course...the Lower East Side was a warzone and not the gentrified, hipsterville we know of today. In fact, any of today's hipsters would've gotten pulverized by the skins and roving, lawless gangs of the 80's! And "Age of Quarrel" reflects that vey well, just the few opening chords of "Hard Times" lets you know they are here to put it down and put it down HARD! When the Cro Mags released this it was a great time for hardcore, they followed fellow NY hardcore Gods Agnostic Front's lead, as well as idolizing the Bad Brains( then living in Ny after moving from D.C. ) and put out quite possibly the hardest album ever. The lineup was the REAL Cro Mags, before they starting acting like rock stars and feuding with petty "now I'm the founder of the Cro Mags nyah nyah!" Harley Flanagan played a pummeling bass and John Joseph shreded the mic with his vocals, today they are at each others throats, but "Age of Quarrel" just makes you reminisce for the days of unity. Bad Brains, Cro Mags, Fishbone, Murphy's Law...everybody played together, this is when there were squats on every blocks and when this album could've ONLY been made. Every album after this has gotten worse and worse, 1989's "Best Wishes" is a great album but Harley then took over vocals and the music is closer to Metallica than anything. "the Age of Quarrel" is hardcore at it's essence, its purist, its REALEST! Soon after this album, all great hardcore bands fused metal into their sounds, cuz as times changed hardcore was going out and metal was coming in. The only other hardcore albums that you would want to even consider putting in this league are Agnostic Front's 1982 debut "Victom in Pain" and Bad Brains 1983 masterpiece " Rock of Light."

5 out of 5 stars The Classic NYHC Album.......2004-06-13

With the Age of Quarrel, The Cro-Mags started a sound that changed an entire music scene forever. Replacing melodic and hardcore punk with a more agressive sound and total street vibe the Cro-Mags usered in a new wave of hardcore punk.

This album is a classic. It also includes their follow-up, Best Wishes, but it's best to stop it at Signs of the Times, as the band was at their peak with the classic line-up of John Joseph, Harley Flanagan, Parris Mayhew, Doug Holland, and Mackie Jason.

      5 out of 5 stars Cro-Mags.......2004-03-04

The Age of Quarrel is my absolute favorite album to get pissed off to. In their other albums they went to a more metal sound, but this album is brooding, building to explosive violence, hardcore. All the great skinhead vibe without the racism. I defy anyone to not start fighting the moment they hear it.

      5 out of 5 stars An All-Time Classic.......2003-12-05

Age of Quarrel is an all-time classic hardcore recording from the middle 80s. Full of politics, ideology, and aggression, the album is a kick in the skull, but it leans not too far into the realm of metal, instead representing an era of New York hardcore that included such other greats as Ludichrist, Murphy's Law, and S.O.D. (Sergeant D is coming, and you're on his list!). Buy it and stick it in between G.B.H.'s City Babys Revenge, and Cryptic Slaughter in your collection.

This CD is a great compilation of some classic and some not so well known Cro-Mags songs. Choppy production but that only adds to the brutality. Truly has that old school sound. English hardcore bands at their finest. Well worth the price and a great addition to a Cro-Mags fan's collection.
