4 out of 5 stars Most fans will like it.......2006-06-07

Excellent song choices, vocals range from ho hum (Mark Slaughter, Chris Jerico)to great (Lemmy, Chuck Billy, Robin McAcAuley), drumming and bass all very good, some of the guitar playing is so good that I was blown away (Bruce Krulick, Craig Goldy, Nino Bettencourt, George Lynch). However if you are on a budget and don't have Live after Death, GET IT instead

1 out of 5 stars What the...?.......2006-05-30

I will refrain from going down the list of songs on this heap. They are all bad. What makes them bad is really sad too...some of the vocal performances are outstanding, but all of the intrumental parts are just badly produced, sounding incredibly thin, having been performed by studio artists. I own every Maiden album and every Maiden "tribute" album and this is by far the worst. Do not let some of the big names on vocals rope you into buying this one. I really want to know how they feel about this- did they hear the background band at all- I would venture to guess not. To compare, listen to Di'Anno's other versions of Wrathchild since his exile from Maiden- even the his live version on "The Beast...Live" is better!

4 out of 5 stars Where's Iced Earth's covers?.......2006-05-18

Back in 2002, the progressive metal band 'Iced Earth', who gets a lot of their influence from Maiden, did a Tribute cover album called "Tribute to the Gods" of some of their favorites and two of the tracks on that album were Maiden's "The Number of the Beast" and "Hallowed Be Thy Name". Both of which were IMO probably better in both musical arrangement and vocals than the originals. The vocals were sung by the now former Iced Earth vocalist Matt Barlow and sound extremely close to, but also IMO Bruce Dickinson's vocals on the original versions from '82. The music tracks are also stronger. Both use the same basic arrangement, but with updated production and guitar riffing styles. Quite frankly, it's a shame that the entire Maiden catalog couldn't have been redone by Iced Earth.

With regards to this album, I previewed a lot of the tracks and quite frankly, they're missing the vocal range of Matt Barlow from Iced Earth. In fact, they make you wanna go back and listen to the original Maiden version, while the Iced Earth versions sound so similar to the originals that you'd be hard pressed to notice the difference.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best if not THE best tribute albums ever........2006-05-11

I have lots of tribute albums, and this is one of thye best ever. Right up there with Nativity in Black.

1 out of 5 stars Thirty-foot pole? Not even!.......2006-02-27

Generally speaking, this tribute album's covers are poorly done. They're watered down, the vocals are only nailed in a couple songs- and you'd better be able to, Paul, after recording 50 different versions of Wrathchild since you were given the boot 25 years ago- the guitars end up sounding out-of-tune or off-note, and, well... some of the people on here who aren't currently enlisted in a band probably have a reason for it and it shows in this album. I guess the only way this album could really serve as a tribute is that it underscores the notion that Iron Maiden is too high-caliber for anyone else to get right. The only cover track on here that I would ever consider actually listening to is Flight of Icarus. The instruments weren't particularly spot-on but it's the only song (other than Wrathchild) that doesn't induce vomiting from the vocals alone. Tim Owens comes very close to sounding like Dickinson.

The gesture is nice and all, but it does reek of commercialism and, more often than not, the tunes are dumbed down.

1 out of 5 stars WARNING: DO NOT BUY UNTIL U HEAR THE PREVIEW..........2006-10-22

I've heard quit a few tributes to IM, but this one really blows. The music just has no dynamics, and sometimes even sounds out of tune. If u want to waste some money on classic instruments performing IM songs i recommend that you buy THe Piano Tribute, but do not even bother with this one. It is a rather experimental attempt to play already perfected music and doesn't even give you that satisfaction that you might have had if you are a Metallica fan and have listened to Apocalyptica's tribute to them.

1 out of 5 stars The CD IRON MAIDENS SHOULD BE "WITHOUT".......2006-01-27

Being an Iron Maiden fan i thought this would be a good one. But Stupid me i didn't read the warnings from other buyers. This is the worst cd ever. well if you pretend its not iron maiden songs being destroyed, i guess it may be acceptable. A waste of money. i will probably toss it out with the rest of the trash. This is my opinion. DO NOT BUY THIS CD!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Listen to the warnings of others PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2 out of 5 stars Comparatively Disappointing.......2004-12-19

I am a big fan of almost all "String Quartet Tribute to -" 's, but this one is an exception. The arrangements are rather poor and on some tracks, the instruments are slightly out of tune - which is really distracting. They add a set of bongos / congos into the mix, and it feels really foreign and out of place. As much as I love this genre and Iron Maiden, this tribute really does justice to neither.

3 out of 5 stars LOL.......2004-10-08

When i Heard the sample tracks it just made me feel like turning on some REAL Maiden.

2 out of 5 stars a pretty sad excuse for a maiden tribute.......2006-10-31

There are some obvious flaws on the piano tribute to iron maiden CD. First is the price. This is a horrible tribute and it costs way too much. the only reason i'd buy this is if your grandmother wanted to hear some of your favorite music and if it was in the bargain bin for 3 bucks. The second problem is...well....when are you even going to listen to this? The grand piano sounds great and everything but a little too loud to sleep. But this is no rock album either. The guitars, bass. and drums that we all love are gone. I admit it. The song selection is great. But whats the point when they sound this bad? The point is, don't buy this album. waste of money and your music listening time. As for me, i'm going back to the store to sell this piece of crap.

5 out of 5 stars A fine reminder of the songs we listened to so many times.......2006-10-22

I love it!
In a nutshell, it is nothing but piano playing all the instruments (guitar, bass, and vocals) so its not any more complex than writing a midi score on your computer and playing it with that stupid comp synth effect. But the performer is really good and it just thrills me to hear clearly Iron Maiden music in its full complexity, without any guitar distortions, which have that effect to cut on tone's frequencies and make the melodies sound much "drier".
If you listened to these songs a thousand times already (like I did), and kindda got bored of them, but also like to sing along or reminisce a bit, you will love this too.

1 out of 5 stars Now I've heard it ALL.......2006-08-13

Ummm.... yeah....

I've been a Maiden fan for over 2 decades but this is simply an abomination. Some things just don't sound good together. Steve Harris is a great songwriter. And pianist on this album is obviously talented. But two good ingredients don't necessarily equal a good product.

What's next? John Tesh playing Slayer?

3 out of 5 stars Drummer needed: Apply within.......2006-07-04

I realize this is supposed to be a "piano" tribute to the Irons, but the thing just sounds waaay tooo plain. It needs a rhythm for godsake... I had HOPED it wouldn't have vocals, and I got my wish, sadly it doesn't have anything else BESIDES PIANO! I have to agree the piano sounds a bit "cheap" but it could sound a lot worse.

The cover art is a crack-up and really attracted me to this. The song selection is also VERY good:) Sadly, all this needed was a drummer or a drum machine to help w/ the timing. If you can find this for $10 it's worth it, if not, pass.

4 out of 5 stars I like it.......2006-01-07

In our store during Christmas, we added it to Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Everyone thought they were listening to Christmas music. Can I play with madness?

2 out of 5 stars Typically weak tribute nonsense.......2004-02-11

I have to admit that I've become just as leery of tribute albums as the next guy, but just when I was ready to give up on them entirely labels like D-Rock and Magna Carta come along with the brilliant idea of mixing and matching band members from different groups on the same song. "A Call To Irons" doesn't follow this format, which is one strike against it. On the plus side, only a few of the songs are ruined by out-of-place death metal vocals (Vital Remains' take on "The Trooper" comes to mind). Another thumbs up is the superb track listing, though it does focus on the earlier material, with nothing newer than "Powerslave" (Ancient Wisdom) and "Rime Of The Ancient Mariner" (Opera IX). The latter is one of my favorite Maiden tunes ever, but I have decidedly mixed feelings about the rendition included here. Though it's played superbly, it's one of those with the black metal vocals, which in itself could have been a minor complaint, except that the screeching is alternated with unprocessed female vocals on the chorus. A jarring listen, more like fingernails on a blackboard than a repeat viewing of Eraserhead. Absu are widely considered one of the premier black metal bands around, and they get my vote by having the decency to pick an instrumental: "Transylvania" is capably handled by these Texan legends, at a faster tempo than the original of course. Even at the increased speed Absu never get sloppy, and for a black metal group the soloing is quite astounding. I'm definitely going to check these guys out. Another instrumental classic, "Genghis Kahn", is covered by Angel Corpse, who I'm assuming are another death/black metal band, but they also do justice to the Maiden legend with their experienced chops and faithfulness to the original. If there's one thing that can be recommended about the album as a whole, it's the outstanding musicianship, which is even better than many of the tributes I've heard with bigger name artists. If you're a fan of Iron Maiden and open to well-done tribute albums, you could do both better and worse than "A Call To Irons". My suggestion to the record labels is to start issuing these tributes at a budget price, kind of like a sampler. I doubt if any of the bands are making much money off of this, and like this Maiden homage, many of them are worth adding to your collection but only at a budget price. Approach at your own financial risk.

3 out of 5 stars Really nto as good as the original.......2003-10-18

I don't usually review music, because, to be honest, it's a matter of opinion, nut I beleive there is one thing I can say about this album: it is simply not as good as the original songs. While there are a few songs that are not bad, like Solitude Aeturnus' rendition of "Hallowed be thy name", Opeth's "Remember Tomorrow", Steel Prophet's "The Ides fo march", and others, most of the time the album just make me yearn to listen to the original songs.

1 out of 5 stars Totally Awful!!!.......2001-05-26

This is the worst tribute album I have ever heard. All these great Maiden classics are butchered by these no talent "Death Metal" bands. If I could...I would give this tribute CD negative points. But I cant so I will give one star. (And it is not even worthy of that one star.) DO NOT buy this CD. I am trashing mine so I could never hear it again. Awful, awful CD.

2 out of 5 stars Not worth the money.......2002-07-13

Well, I thought this would be a lot better than it was, because I figured its pretty hard to mess up Iron Maiden's great music. I was wrong. It was terrible. Although, the reason I dont give it only 1 star is because it was, in fact, a tribute, and Steel Prophet did pretty well.

3 out of 5 stars Decent.......2001-09-18

Many of these tracks aren't worth listening to. A few of them are more of an insult to the band: They were influenced by Iron Maiden, yet the actual sound of their regular music differs so much, it's hard to imagine them coming anywhere close.

However, Opeth's version of "Remember Tomorrow" is outstanding. It is the shining point of the album, in my opinion.

1 out of 5 stars ...This is a TRIBUTE???? It's more of an insult!.......2001-08-27

...my god.... I saw this in the store. I didn't recognize any of the bands. But it said it was a tribute to IM and the songs are undisputed classics. So I figured, as a tribute, it can't be that bad. After all, they're here to honor IM, and alot of tribute albums are pretty good (NIB - Tribute to Black Sabbath for example). Unfortunately I was more than dissapointed when I popped the CD in. I admit, the names of the band (...Angel Corpse for example) should have clued me in but, as the other reviewers said, they are all death metal bands and they destroy fantastic IM songs by singing them in, you guessed it, death metal style. If it wasn't so sad, I'd be laughing. They don't really sing...they just kind of read the lyrics with a deep, "spooky/demonic", voice. Listening to the Trooper for example by Vital Remains is more of a comedy than a tribute. I suppose some death metal fans out there might enjoy this but, for the rest of us, if you're expecting good renditions of IM songs actually being SUNG rather than spoken, pass this one up... I don't know about the rest of the tribute albums you can find, but this one is bad. This isn't a tribute. This is an insult. I never thought classic IM songs can be butchered so horribly... If Steve Harris heard this, he'd be crying. If I could give it zero stars, I would in a heartbeat. Avoid this one at all costs!

1 out of 5 stars Wish I could have given it 0 stars!.......2001-04-08

This CD is like a slap to Iron Maiden's face!! Every pathedic idiot singer from every horrible band on this CD just screams into the mic like friggin' annoying moron!! How anybody could like that crap is beyond me! They just take everything good about these classic Maiden songs and ... all over them! AVOID THIS CD AT ALL COSTS!!!

2 out of 5 stars Tribute? More like an insult..........2001-03-28

This CD is loaded with death metal bands who absolutely butcher these classics. Bruce Dickinson is probably the best singer in the genre... these guys are awful. Steel Prophet is OK but you have to check out Opera IX. It has to be the worst performance I have ever heard. Oh well, feeble attempt for money and exposure. Avoid it.

        3 out of 5 stars Maiden tributes.......2005-09-25

Anyone looking for a Maiden tribute album that doesn't suck? Haha! Get Worlds Only Female Tribute to Iron Maiden by the Iron Maidens... these chicks can rock!!!

        3 out of 5 stars Mediocre.......2002-12-26

Sebastian Bach's Children of the Damned is the only reason to buy this album. Bach rips through the song as well, if not BETTER, than Iron Maiden themselves. Truly a classic.

The other songs on this album are poor, if not mediocre at best.

5 out of 5 stars This is a fantastic Tribute CD! Well produced & packaged!.......2001-09-01

I usually hate tribute CDs. With the exception of this fine masterpiece and the SAVATAGE Tribute CD! There are some great bands here performing like champs! Listen to Sebastian wail on CHILDREN OF THE DAMNED and that singer from DOFKA does a mighty fine Bruce and the solos are just incredible on Powerslave! Crowbar's track REMEMBER TOMORROW is very moody and trippy! This is a double disc and I can listen straight through both discs with shere excitement! Fantastic tribute!

        3 out of 5 stars It's called a TRIBUTE- get over it.......2000-11-17

Yes, I myself have complained about tribute albums before. But you know what, THAT'S WHAT IT IS! A TRIBUTE to a great band. It is not Iron Maiden. What do you expect? I know that it sounds strange to the ears hearing someone else sing and play IM's music. But that's what a tribute album is- SOMEONE ELSE playing the music. You have to get past the idea that everyone is supposed to sound like IM. They won't. The people that appear on this album weren't chosen at random. They didn't get together and say, "Hey, let's put out a double cd of Iron Maiden cover tunes." They are friends of the band. IM, or their reps, CHOSE the artists for this album. Believe it or not, SOME people are fans of these "lesser known bands" and wouldn't buy this cd for any other reason. And the same goes for IM fans who have never heard these other bands. As far as talent goes, Sebastian Bach is the shining star on this tribute album. In my eyes, the man can do NO wrong. And because HE was on it, I bought the cd. That's what a TRIBUTE album is all about! 'nuf said.

1 out of 5 stars ROD, HOW MUCH MONEY ???.......2000-10-23

I think Maiden must have received a good money by permitting the recording of this garbage. Otherwise, I don't know if their manager, Rod Smallwood, would permit it. The band featuring here are so weak, the versions so uninspired, that this CD would pass to oblivion forever, without nobody noticing it ...
