5 out of 5 stars Varèse Sarabande à son meilleur!.......2003-04-17

5 out of 5 stars A copy in every household . . ........2003-02-09

This disc is so chock-full of classic scores from classic films that every movie-and-music lover should own a copy. Thanks to Robert Townson for producing this collection and the entire Varese film score catalog. My favorite tracks from this disc are "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf"; "Star Trek: The Motion Picture"; and "Midway".

5 out of 5 stars A sampler feat. some of the greatest film scores in history........2001-09-06

Words cannot convey what a collection like this means to a film music collector such as myself. Varese Saraband has been releasing quality film scores and music for the last 20 plus years. My vinyl and CD collections burst with so much great stuff from Varese. One day I was looking in the bins of my local record store and noticed this little gem of a collection. I looked at it and saw a virtual cornucopia of the great film score cues for only $ (and 2 discs). So I purchased it and opened it up. Much to my surprise, the booklet is chock full of information about each scoring session and pictures to boot. I also learned more about some of these wonderful pieces as well. Well thanks to Mr. Townson and this nice collection, I plan to purchase some of the recordings these cues were released on since I don't own classics like Viva Zapata, Alex North's 2001, Superman (not the Varese version, I do have the other release), and Patton. Guess I will have to save a few pennies, but it will be worth it. I recommend this collection to anybody who wants to discover and learn about the history of film music. I also think it's a great listen from the first song to the last on both discs. My compliments to Varese on a great collection of classics (and keeping it under $).

5 out of 5 stars "the man behind Varese Sarabande ~ Robert Townson".......2001-04-06

The music that this label releases is without a doubt in a class by themselves, always perfection. Here we have the 500th CD release from ~ "The Man Behind The Music" ~ Mr. Robert Townson. So much care is taken with each album, that you feel you are witnessing the birth of a newborn baby, and that may be just what it is.

For those of us who buy each album ~ people who work to create them ~ the artwork ~ musicians ~ and a list of some of the most talented composers and conductors ~ John Barry, Elmer Bernstein, John Debney, Georges Delerue, Cliff Eidelman, Jerry Goldsmith, Bernard Herrmann, Michael Lang, Henry Mancini, Joel McNeely, Alfred Newman, Alex North, Miklos Rozsa, Dimitri Shostakovich, Frederic Talgorn, Franz Waxman, Rick Wentworth and John Williams ~ and as always the sound quality and performances by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Seattle Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra and National Philharmonic Orchestra is dynamically flawless and simply superb.

This economically priced 2-CD-Set ~ pure film score sampling ~ is worth it's weight in gold. One should not have a favorite from this vast collection, but if asked ~ it would be "TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD" (1962) composer Elmer Bernstein took it to the limit and beyond, the story-line, cast and score was the perfect marriage.

A big, big thank you to ~ Matthew Joseph Peak (cover/session photography) ~ Jonathan Allen, Geoff Foster, Bernie Kirsh, Mike Ross, Mike Sheady and Al Swanson (recording engineers) ~ Rich Breen (mastering engineer) ~ and for the extensive 28 page liner-note booklet featuring "behind the scenes" memories of these past 500 albums, may we look forward to future classics on the next 500 CD's from producer...ROBERT TOWNSON!

4 out of 5 stars not his best.............his second best.........2007-02-23

while, in my opinion, this is not Moore's best work, it is every bit a 4, and a very good album. Mind's Eye, to me, is a superior offering, but Time Odyssey is a close second. there is just something about Mind's Eye that i can't explain. it's so awesome, that it makes anything Vinnie puts forth, have to live up to. unfortunately, many artists suffer this affliction. they spoil us with a release, and make all their later releases pale in comparison. however, this cd is very good as well. "while my guitar gently weeps" is so masterfully done, that it gives me chills when i listen to it. if you are a guitarist, then you will appreciate Moore's rendition of this Beatles' classic. it is nicely engineered, and the performances are on point. if it weren't for Mind's Eye, i would be proclaiming it's place at the top of VM's releases. however, it is a victim of having to live up to a masterpiece, which it does a very good job of. peace.

5 out of 5 stars Great Compositions + Great Skill = Great CD!.......2007-01-26

I had this on cassette tape way back when, and then replaced it with a CD... recently burned the CD to my mp3 player... it has been a constant for well over 10 years now. Meanwhile I've nearly forgotten that Malmsteen exists. The reason for this is that the songs here are so well constructed - the chording behind the main guitar line is what really takes you from your living room into the odyssey Vinnie Moore invites you on... (if you'll pardon the cheesy comment).

Then, on top of a basic chord structure that takes you somewhere interesting, add nearly the best neo-classical themes and some of the most brilliantly executed "shredding" you'll ever hear... and you just can't beat it. (Note, I won't say the "BEST"... there are guys out there more innovative or faster).... but adding all things together, this is timeless music. Vinnie Moore got it "just right" on this one: the best of his ample output in my opinion.

3 out of 5 stars Leaves Something to be Desired.......2006-12-25

Vinnie Moore has some great songs. His classical influences always shine in his music, but the compositions he played here frankly weren't very enjoyable. A notable exception is Pieces of a Picture, the 9th track. This song is just impressive, with complex intervals and a melody tying the whole piece together, this is definitely the high point of the album. I love Vinnie Moore for the accuracy of his playing, the sound of his guitar, and his classical influences, but I didn't like the songs he was playing on this CD.

5 out of 5 stars VINNIE MOORE IS AN ABSOLUTE MASTER..........2006-08-07

...of thoughtful, musical shreddery. You get those guitarists that can play unbelievably fast, yet play with no feel. Vinnie Moore however, can play unbelievably fast when he wants to, but always plays with so much beauty and feeling. This is a definate classic of instrumental guitar. As a musician you can't help but appreciate his amazing compositional abilities as well as mind blowing playing ability, so do your ears a favour and buy this album, and I guarantee you'll love it. Standout tracks: All, but especially 'Prelude/Into the Future', 'Message in a Dream', 'As Time Slips By','Race with Destiny', and 'April Sky'.

5 out of 5 stars The Best .......2006-06-13

Time Odyssey is the best work Vinnie has done. I rank this up there up Rising Force but more cleaner and progressive. It's a shame that vinnie ignores this release. The rest of his are more rock oriented, This is progrssive.

5 out of 5 stars As Always, Hilarious.......2007-05-03

This is so funny! Like all the Forbidden Broadway cds, its another knock-out. I feel like such a crazy person when I am in the car driving and I just burst out laughing. Its great and a must have for any Forbidden Broadway fan.

3 out of 5 stars Spoof Odessey worth the laughs!.......2002-04-14

I enjoyed "Forbidden Broadway 2001: A Spoof Odyssey." This recording has some truly genius material, and although these actors' impersonations of famous Broadway stars aren't as strong as they have been in the past, the CD has a lot to recommend it.

Particularly strong is Track 16, "Let's do an old fashioned show tune," featuring Elton John and Ethel Merman duking it out over AIDA, which Merman says is "putting everyone here through hell." Likewise, Track 15, "Let's Ruin Times Square Again," tickles my funny bone. Also wonderful are the satires of Beauty and the Beast, Angela Lansbury, and the Full Monty; Gerard Alessandrini's done a tremendous job with these! In addition, this CD's introductory song is much stronger than those on the previous volumes of Forbidden Broadway. It really sets the tone for the best parts of this recording.

Unfortunately, with a few notable exceptions, the first half of the CD is a bit thin, which is why I give this recording 3 out of 5 stars: Even though it entertains me, there's a lot I have to skip over. For example, the Liza Minelli spoof annoying (though, I admit, a little funny), and in the Music Man revival satire, their Robert Preston impersonator sounds *nothing* like the original. (In earlier recordings, the actors *did* sound like the people they claimed to be.)

The good news is that the CD has 30 tracks in all, so even though there are 13 that I dislike, I just love the rest... I do recommend it!

2 out of 5 stars better to be "Lost in Space".......2001-12-31

First and foremost, this CD is really for diehard fans of Forbidden Broadway, those of us who want the good, the bad and the ugly on the cd rack. I was extremely unimpressed with the latest offering.

While I agree with some of the other reviewers that there is some nice work, I don't know that Saturday Night Fiasco and Sondheim's Blues are sufficient to carry the rest of the tracks. Not much seems new or worse yet, important. Disney isn't new, nor is Les Miz. And while pointing out what is stale and pedestrian on Broadway was amusing on the last couple of releases, this Forbidden Broadway spoof clearly has joined the list of stale and pedestrian.

While there is some nice material on this disc, I really didn't laugh out loud, and that is why I have always bought these in the past.

If Alessandrini reduces the show to the same complaints of the same shows and then replaying lightly tweaked versions of past numbers, Trouble and Alan Cumming in Cabaret specifically, then he has himself is on the becoming a revival - and we know what he thinks of revivals.

The repeats might even be acceptable if there was something fresh in the perfomance, but both were done much better on their respective discs. I think Danny Gurwin is a great comedian, but he doesn't shine in either of these numbers. We also need a recording with no Ethel Merman or Liza numbers - give them a rest already. And why bring back Streisand with such a poor imitation? The earlier Barbara's were dead on vocal impressions as well as speech patterns. If you aren't going to improve on it, then don't drag it back out.

Alessandrini suggests that this is one of the best casts he has ever worked with. I don't know what he bases that on, but I beg to differ, either cast with Bryan Batt was significantly better, although they worked with fresh, clever material. Still, those recordings had verocious talent that brought Gerard's stinging wit to life for those of us who can't see every new production of FB.

Maybe it is time to go to off Broadway productions, or to the radio or the movies for some new ideas. Or else promise no references to the Gap, Disney, or Chorus Boys, (way over used on this recording), along with a Merman and Liza free season. Start from scratch. That might give us hope that Forbidden Broadway too might not be dead.

3 out of 5 stars Stretched Thin.......2001-03-26

I just saw the stage production of Forbidden Broadway 2001: A Spoof Odyssey. I agree with the other reviewers who feel that Alessandrini is no longer at the top of his game. Perhaps he should lay off for a year or three and let Broadway present new things for him to lampoon - as it always will.

The opening sequence is forced and unfunny, and clearly in place only to batter the listener with the "2001" theme. Unlike a previous reviewer, I found the Judi Dench parody hysterical, though I question its accuracy.

The "Trouble" parody is, as it always was, incomplete and thin. My dear friend John Kenrick (...) did a better job with it - included the segments of the original song that GA left out, and in a funnier fashion. The Cole Porter parody is marginally amusing, but the Brian Mitchell/Marin Mazzie parody is dead on the mark, and VERY funny.

The parody of Cheryl Ladd remains in the show, although she's no longer in "Annie Get Your Gun" - Reba McIntyre is now in the role. Similarly, he stabs at Alan Cumming, who is no longer playing the Emcee. These numbers, while funny, lack punch. On the other hand, he once again skewers long time target Patti LuPone with an hysterical new parody of Being Alive. I suppose she's innately funnier, after all these years, than Alan Cumming, who is, after all, a relative newcomer.

The Rocky Horror parody is amusing, and the observation that sex has moved off 42nd Street and onto the Broadway stage is not without merit. The Beauty parody is amusing, and apt, but as has already been noted, GA has been clobbering us with the Disnification of Broadway for years now. I suppose he finds some glee in the fading success of this particular show.

I must say that while Gurwin is not the greatest singer, "Sondheim's Blues" is the most brilliant piece I've heard from Alessandrini in years. It's absolutely dead on. The friends I was with had never seen nor heard "Follies" and completely missed the point, but I was in stitches.

The "10 Years More" (which does not appear on this album, but remains in the show) has really begun to wear thin, especially with the closing this year of Cats and Miss Saigon. The Cameron Macintosh British mega-musicals are finally releasing their grip on Broadway, and this isn't as funny any more.

Broadway, despite the naysayers, will never die... and apparently, neither will Forbidden Broadway. I don't think it should - but I do think it needs a rest.

2 out of 5 stars Do the Math.......2001-03-15

Four CDs cover the first 20 Years of Forbidden Broadway, Gerard Alessandrini's viciously witty satire of New York Theatre. The last year has seen Three new CDs, FB "Cleans Up Its Act" "20th Anniversary Edition" and now "2001 a Spoof Odyssey". Do the math.

Alessandrini is running out of ideas, and is spreading the remaining ones too thin. . Sanitized Time Square - Been there. Disnified Broadway - Done that, and so many times. Asinine casting faux pas, plotless pointless set-monster musicals, and Ethel Merman and Liza. We've heard it all before - and last time, it was funnier.

Now normally when a writer (or director or actor) has truly entertained me on numerous occasions, I'll forgive the odd show that disappoints. This would be the case here except for two things: Alessandrini is in the vicious parody business - he's never spared anyone else Besides, if he's going to actually include couplets like: "If lyrics are no longer witty... Then I don't want to go " he's inviting the pans.

When you hear the AIDA lampoon, you'll be reminded of the dim bulb in Cyrano de Bergerac who taunts the hero with the brilliant witticism: Your nose is very large

Yes, there are a few true Forbidden Broadway tracks on Spoof Odyssey. Dame Judi Dench singing "Why can't Americans do theatre like the Brits?" (with apologies to My Fair Lady), I Hate Ben (with apologies to Kiss Me Kate) and about 1/3 of "Let's Ruin Time Square Again" (no apologies necessary to Rocky Horror which understands how easy it is for good parody to go bad). Oh yes, there is one absolutely true Forbidden Broadway track: TROUBLE - yes, the same Trouble from Volume 3 which was just re-released on the 20th Anniversary compilation - and it's back again with a more hackneyed Robert Preston impersonation and all of 4 words changed. Granted it's one of the better bits, more worthy of rerunning than say, referring to Miss Saigon as Viet-Numb, but oh, he reran that gag too

3 out of 5 stars This is a very unusual cd, buy it and you will see why.............2000-09-20

This cd is a little different from most. Let me explain! This cd has a great mixture of several types of music. This cd features popular, classical, sacred, and wedding music. What a treat it is to have all these beautuful songs together on one cd.

The main concern I have for this cd is the fact that some of the arrangements were not up to par. As you will see, all songs are not ideal for harp arrangements. I liked about half of the songs performed on this cd. I feel like the song selection could have been a little bit better. If that had happened, I think this would have been an outstanding cd.

    Album Description

"Electric guitarist James "Blood" Ulmer ... is one of jazz's great progressives." -- Will Hermes, Entertainment Weekly "Back In Time is the new year's first A+, Ulmer's friskiest since the 1983 Columbia LP from which the trio derives its name." -- Francis Davis, Village Voice "Any written description of Odyssey the band is no longer valid by the time the ink dries. This group redefines itself every few moments." -- Thomas Conrad, JazzTimes

Since its original release in November 2005, James "Blood" Ulmer's Back In Time has received rave reviews. Down Beat critics voted Ulmer onto the Blues Artist of the Year chart, and the Village Voice listed the release in its Top 50 of the Year. Of the artists who have risen to prominence on jazz guitar, James "Blood" Ulmer is one of the most notable. From his first days as Ornette Coleman's Harmolodic guitarist in Prime Time, his path to guitar innovator was a fast one. In the ten-year period between 1973, when he began his formal relationship with Harmolodics and Ornette Coleman, and 1983, when he recorded one of the epochal albums of the 1980s (Odyssey), it can be argued that Ulmer's evolution was the logical outgrowth of Hendrix, and just as significant. The band on, including Charles Burnham and Warren Benbrow, has since become known as Odyssey and is recognized today as the quintessential Ulmer band. A return of this group after a seven-year hiatus is a cause for celebration, and a call to those who may have forgotten to take notice. A return as musically engaging and powerful as this one is a reminder of how startlingly original, innovative, and downright forceful James "Blood" Ulmer is as an artist.

5 out of 5 stars Not to be missed!!!.......2007-04-30

This CD is simply excellent! Anybody who ever cared for TV soundtracks should give it a chance. The only better thing is Barry Gray's music for "UFO" TV series, which has been promised from Silva Screen (and has been published by "Fanderson" and since sould out). So, whatever somebody think of the series, this music will not fail to delight. Impressive and nostalgic, mysterious and enthralling, this music really deserves to be heard by everybody.

5 out of 5 stars Great year one compilation.......2007-01-09

This remastered version of Space:1999 year one or series one sounds excellent. It is very clear and you can better appreciate Barry Gray wonderful job.

If you are Space:1999 fan, it is a must have.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent CD.......2006-07-27

Talk about bringing back memories. The music is crisp-clear & updated. For the 1999 fans-this is a must have.

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic Future Score.......2005-04-01

Space:1999 - the series - may be one of the most controversial SF shows ever. People either love it, or they hate it... there seems to be little middle ground. As a kid I was thrilled with the series, although even then I could see the weaknesses in science, story, and characterization. But from a purely visual and aural standpoint, the first series rarely disappointed.

Especially when it came to the music. As many fans know, Barry Gray scored only 4 episodes - the rest being rounded out by reusing his cues for those episodes, plus liberal doses of library music. This disc gives a good overview of the magnificent music written specifically for the series, as well as a sampling of some of those library cues. As a previous reviewer said, the ultimate soundtrack to the series was released several years ago by the Fanderson organization ( which one had to join as a member to be able to order ) and is sadly out of print. Copies can be found on the internet, often selling for prohibitive prices. Unless you are a diehard collector, willing to shell out a good sized portion of your paycheck, this single disc is the way to go.

Sound quality is superb, and in some cases surpasses the previously mentioned two disc set, as several of the tracks have been remastered to remove wow, flutter, and distortion that could be heard on the Fanderson set. The main title was remixed to make it truer to the on-screen version, and the tracks from the episode "Black Sun" are in stereo on CD here for the first time ever. The previous release featured the episode's complete score, but only as a monophonic version, as many of the multitrack masters for that particular episode have been lost. For that alone, this disc is worth owning, even if you have the Fanderson set.

However, it is Gray's music that is the true reason to own this soundtrack - regardless of your feelings about the series. Full bodied, sweeping, emotional and grand... not at all your typical seventies television soundtrack. Years before John Williams revived the popularity of orchestral scores for science fiction projects, Barry Gray was filling small screen speakers with epic music that would have sounded perfectly at home in a motion picture theatre.

5 out of 5 stars Space 1999 Year One Soundtrack Available Once Again!.......2005-03-09

I give this soundtrack 5 stars only because the soundtrack is awesome, but if you want a more complete compilation, you need to find the Fanderson version.
The year 1 music definately set the tone for the TV show back in 1975. It gave it beautiful character and feeling for the show. It was ashame that for the second year that they had changed so much (even the music) and lost that character and feeling (but that is a whole other debate).
In 1976, RCA records released the year 1 soundtrack with a beautiful gate fold cover and for about 20+ years, that is all we had, until Fanderson. The year 1 soundtrack is no longer available through them, but it is the most complete. This CD, however, does well to capture the feeling of year 1 and does throw an additional track for you sun bathers out there. It is a nice 30 year anniversary gift to myself. Happy 30th Birthday: SPACE 1999!!!

      Album Description

"Hands of Time," on the Guitar Odyssey label, fully demonstrates Larry Pattis' unique combination of talents as composer, arranger, and master of the steel-string guitar. His heartfelt folk-oriented lyrical approach to the guitar, along with his classically inspired technique, provides for a CD that is filled with track after track of music that demands the listener's attention.

The compositions on “Hands of Time” are strong and confident, the guitar playing is rich with beautiful textures. It has been suggested that his playing and writing on this new collection of mostly original fingerstyle guitar works “reaches even beyond the potential suggested in the first CD.”

Ten stunningly original tracks, along with a heart-rending arrangement of Jay Ungar's fabulous “Ashokan Farewell,” make up the 40+ minutes of this all-solo guitar project.

"Pattis approaches every note with the ethics of a perfectionist, but without sacrificing the passionate center his compositions inhabit. You may find yourself wondering if guitar music has ever sounded this good." Salt Lake City Weekly

      Album Description

The distillation of 30 or so songs recorded for the much anticipated and as yet to be released LP, Eaves, the Cymbidium release is the first part of a much larger story, and an introduction to Damon Aaron. Though informed as much by hip-hop and electronic music as acoustic music, this body of work is not about genre or production. This is contemplative and personal storytelling in the tradition of Terry Callier and Nick Drake. Lyrically it manages to be both literal and impressionistic at the same time, mining the between spaces and finding the commonalities. This is the central theme of the larger work this comes from and is hinted at in its title track, 'Eaves'. Cymbidium includes 8 acoustic and epic soul pieces that are modern and timeless; sophisticated and simple; roots and future and was self-produced and largely recorded at home on 1/2" inch 8-track tape and MPC.

An amazing artist with a far reaching and eclectic style. His songs reflect his roots which reach far into everything from acoustic folk to soul to jazz and funk. This is a storyteller whose words are as important as his music. He takes hold of you from the first playing, and the more you listen the more you find his melodies and lyrics stirring in your soul.
