WHAT A TALENT - WHAT A MUSO.......2006-08-07
Not only is this man a monster guitarist, he writes some of the most diverse and almost uniformly interesting material. The chops are all there, but they are not the sole purpose for the musik. Every song tells a story, and tells it well. Great imagery and some very unorthodox compositions as well as the all out tear up rockers. He does it all and better than most. It may take a few listens, but after a while, every song will connect with you and reveal depth that you at first did not notice. No stupid jock rock here. Great musik, blistering guitar virtuosity. If that sounds like you, don't miss out on this.
Little known album, but he is fantastic.......2002-02-28
It took two or three listens, but this is a damn fine record. I thought Stevie Salas was just a guitar hero, and he is that, but his songwriting and melodies are strong too. At times he reminds me of an inverted Lenny Kravitz: Lenny sings just a little better than Stevie (but not much!) and Stevie plays guitar better than Lenny (a lot better!). Granted, their not clones of each other by any stretch of the imagination, but it's the only comparison I can think of. Either way, Stevie Salas is the complete rock package with songs, vocals and great guitar playing.
This record rocks HARD most of the time and Stevie plays mean funk guitar with some sizzle to it. Tell Your Story Walkin', Start Again, Crack Killed Applejack and Born to Mack are funky as hell and the guitar solos absolutely wail. He does a good job of taking the best bits of 70s, 80s and 90s rock guitar and blending them into a great modern yet familiar sound. I hear Hendrix, Eddie Hazel, Vernon Ried and Dave Navarro all in there a little bit, but ultimately he is his own man. There are some pretty songs on here like I Once Was There and The Lying Truth and he pulls these off just as well as the heavier stuff. The only tune I didn't care for is Amelia.
I'd only heard rumors about Stevie Salas and bought this record without hearing it. I was very pleasantly surprised. I can't believe this guy hasn't made it in the US and that's a shame. I look forward to hearing more of his records, but most of them are very expensive imports. It might be worth it to support a guy like him though instead of some of the modern garbage that's out there. Check him out and support real talent!

I'd just like to provide a quick endorsement for "Back From The Living" for anyone who might be curious . . . I saw Stevie Salas perform when he opened for Joe Satriani and I have been a fan ever since. He writes music that has serious bite, lots of good hooks, and some absolutely rabid guitar playing. Stevie is able to coax sounds out of his guitar that seem implausible. He obviously tips his hat to Jimi Hendrix but his style has evolved into a unique voice that might suggest where Jimi may have gone, had he not departed from us so prematurely. The opener is a declaration of Stevie's committment to rock out on his own terms. He proceeds from their to serve up several blistering tunes before slowing things down with "Amelia" (so we can catch our breath, I think). On this song, Stevie adds layers of special treatments that give this affecting song a very eerie feel. The rest of the disc drips with raw energy, libido, and funk. For low end enthusiasts, Rick Skatore and T.M. Stevens bring it on the bass big time. With the rest of his catalog available exclusively through import - this title offers sound value to fans on a budget. Songs like "Start Again" and "Rock This Town" have wide appeal. On "Much Ado About Buttin'" Stevie & Co. warn against making promises you don't intend to keep. Therefore, I can't promise you'll like this album - but you might!

Hit and miss from Stevie Salas this time!.......2006-12-13
Not a bad CD overall but not essential for Stevie Salas fans. Some tunes are really funky and rocking while others are a bit slow and boring. The production is nice and highlights the live approach that Stevie and band went for this time. I really bought this CD to hear Dave Abbruzzese on the drums. He plays on the bulk of the tracks but again I'm disappointed with his post Pearl Jam output. He doesn't make the songs come alive like he did for Pearl Jam but instead plays generic stuff. Maybe that's what Stevie wanted. Anyway, there's enough good stuff on this CD for Stevie Salas fans to purchase it but probably not a good starting point for new fans. Try his CD "Back From The Living" if you want the real funky rock music he's known for.
Heck of a CD.......2006-11-26
I have been a stevie salas fan for a long time, but this is really one of his best albums . I still cant understand why this guys goes under the radar for his talent in this country, but that's another story for another time. The album has so much energy and at the same time, you can tell that they had a blast recording it. Many of his friends help on this masterpiece and i for one love it. Great CD!!

This guy should be huge.......2006-08-07
Great songs, great vocals and some stunning guitar playing. Nothing but good news. Why bands like GUNS and ROSES hit it soooo big, when far more talented and interesting musos like SALAS labour in obscurity, beats me. This is anthemic stadium rock without the childish lyrics and silly posturing by the aforementioned. Maybe he should complain about childhood abuse and wear a permanent sneer.
FUNKY CLASSIC!!.......2002-05-27
Can't believe no one review this classy album!!Guys, this album have to be Stevie at his best!!The standout tracks are Stand up,Caught In The Middle Of It,Two Bullets And A Gun and the ballad Indian Chief.Too bad this album is out of stock!!
