5 out of 5 stars Faith No More Who?.......2007-06-05

Listening to Mr. Bungle, it makes me forget about Faith No MOre, which seems average compared to Mr. Bungle. Faith No More is just an alternative band (yes, that is my opinion). Mr. Bungle can't be classified, unless weird is the name. Mr. Bungle is weird. Just look at the cover and the inside, unless your afraid of clowns.

The Music? Can't really describe it. I agree with Lord Chimp, this isn't just some noveltly record. Many of the songs have a twisted circus sound lot's of the time, so if you hate clowns, skip Mr. Bungle (Disco Volainte is a lot different). It's easy to slam, but it's far from a novelty record. Heck, bands like Bloodhound Gang are brilliant (yes they are, don't ________ tell me otherwise, both lyrics and music). Mr. Bungle isn't remotly like the BHG, like I said. I reccomend listening to the samples.

It's quite hard to classify who this album is for. Music can be _________ expensive (depends on how good the music. I say that 12 dollars for One Fierce Beer Coaster is the best ________ 12 dollars I ever spent), and Mr. Bungle can either be worth 50 dollars or one __________ lousy penny. Let's just say that if you can't tolerate anything that isn't a regular song, you'll hate this cd. It's just as chaotic as the other ________ ________ _________ classic Trout Mask Replica (get that too!)

I don't reccomend throwing away any of your Faith No More cd's, but to me, Faith No MOre is just another band compared to Mr. Bungle. THis band isn't one of my favorite bands, but I love it anyway, as there is nothing else out there. I can't wait to hear Disco.

10/10

5 out of 5 stars Off the wall. A true classic........2007-03-26

I bought this as a fan of Faith No More. Unfortunately, I am not the biggest Faith No More fan. I really love this CD. A must have for open-minded people.
It's too bad, you will never see this on VH1 Classic.

1 out of 5 stars You've got to be kidding me........2007-01-28

Someone suggested I listen to this because I was, at the time, into what lame beret-wearing record-store dips would call "creatively aggresive" music. Then it was death metal (which I prefer without cursing or filth, you understand.) Since then I've found the ascension into gabber and then full-on unmitigated hardcore.

Anyway, Mr. Bungle.... tepid. Uninteresting. Bland. Stupid. Gives the chin-strokers something to fascinate over. Let them. Someone's got the fuel the economy.

5 out of 5 stars YES.......2006-11-29

The product of madmen, Mr. Bungle's debut combines elements of funk, jazz, thrash metal and ambience to create one of the most insane rock records of all time. Each song is incredibly different, and not one rock n' roll formula is followed. There is no verse-chorus-verse flow to the album, but it certainly flows, full of audio clips and spoken word interludes, soft musical transitions between "songs" and drawn out endings on a few tracks. It's catchy and full of humor, it'll make you laugh and cry and laugh until you cry and then vomit up any idea of conventional music, which is essentially what they did. Mike Patton's vocals are much like they sound on The Real Thing (Faith No More) not so much like the rest of the stuff he did with them. This album came out around the same time, Mike was young, but he was experimenting with his vocals a lot more than he did with FNM, for they actually had some singles on the Real Thing. Mr. Bungle's debut album doesn't have any pop single material, but it's a record you'll never find anywhere else. It's like circus music, or like a circus rather, in that you'll ride until you get sick, and then jump right back on the ride begging for more.

Nobody ever accused Mr. Bungle of being suckers for a good melody. The syncopated blasts of cartoonish noise that fill 1991's Mr. Bungle and 1995's Disco Volante are one part speed metal and one part Speedy Gonzalez. Initially, the band served as a more aggressive outlet for singer Mike Patton, widely known for his work in Faith No More. But with Faith No More no more, Patton and Mr. Bungle decided to sweeten the Bungle batter with a little songcraft. California boasts harmonies (yes, harmonies!) that would make the Brothers Wilson proud. Opening with a chorus of seagulls and crashing waves that gives way to slide guitar, strings, and Patton singing (not screaming), the poppy yet symphonic "Sweet Charity" announces that this is not your bike messenger's Mr. Bungle album. Songs like the easy strummin' "Retrovertigo," the sultry Scott Walker-esque "Pink Cigarette," and the orchestral "Vanity Fair" make California 1999's golden-hair surprise. --Bill Crandall

4 out of 5 stars AH, album.......2007-07-29

Falling in love with disco volante, brought to california. Which took me a while to adapt to, but i love it. The songs are probably more like real songs, then most of the skitzophrenic madness of the last album. And don't get me wrong. This album is quite mad at times.
Basically a mirage or rock/metal/siberian/60's/indecribable weirdness.
"the air conditioned
nightmare," is by far my favorite. That is one of the best songs ever written.
The opener is great. Which is very catchy.
"Pink cigarette," always struck me as tragic.
Also, "vanity feels like the lost stevie wonder song.
Mike pattons vocals range all over the place. The closer cracks me up. Around two minutes, you start hearing this monk chanting. And another voice(his) rolls in, the "chakchakchakachakachakachaka," which goes into a sudden burst of madness. Awesome.

5 out of 5 stars to michael smith.......2007-06-03

what a dumbass. the chanting has been around much longer than that. mike just borrowed the idea and incorporated it into an amazing song.... kind of like the new tomahawk album... native american songs were around long long ago... but patton took the ideas and made them into a metal/alternative/electronic album. there's a difference between copying something, and being influenced by something and creating your own genius music with those influences. you're probably too dumb to realize that though if you had to post a review just to say something so incredibly dumb and ignorant.

ps-california is a good album :)

5 out of 5 stars California.......2007-03-30

I love everything Mike Patton has done. Mr. Bungle is my favorite of all of his projects. When California came out I was completly blown away. They yet again had turned in a new direction and even though it is more along the lines of "Music" compared to the other albums California is a masterpiece of modern music.
The songs are all very easy to listen to but if you pay close attention you will notice that there is a huge amount of instrumentation and vocalism going on.
This is by fary my favorite Bungle album, even more than the self titled Debut. I just bought this for the third time (stolen twice now) and I am so happy to have it back in my collection. If you like Patton at all and have not heard California, get it.

Goodbye Sober Day

5 out of 5 stars Magnificant.......2007-03-13

'California' is definately a very different item in the Mr. Bungle catalouge. The unnervingly demented experimentation of 'Disco Volante' is watered down, and the unhinged, derranged circus vibe of the first self-titled release is completely gone with the exception of a couple of songs. So what makes this one a hit? What makes 'California' stand out?

'California' is by far the most listenable of the Bungle albums. Before you potential Bungle-heads (If you are a true Bungle-head you already own this) turn an run at the word 'listenable', please understand what I mean. Mr. Bungle truly reached their musical potential with this album. Rather than focusing on extreme and random noises, Mike Patton shows us that even though still delightfully bizzare and unconventional, he is a truly magnificant vocalist capable of carrying a very melodic and captivating tune. Matching Mike's more melodic vocal style, 'California' soars above most experimental music with soothing melodies, and well executed atmosphere. This more melodic and less nonsense approach is obviously going to make the music more 'listenable', but fear not, 'California' still visits every corner of the musical spectrum. With styles from salsa, to metal, to surf, 'California' is still unmistakably a Mr. Bungle release.

By far the most 'musical' (in the traditional sense) Mr. Bungle album, 'California' is a perfect place to start if you are new to the band, and is an essentual piece to any avant-garde musicians' collection.

1 out of 5 stars just not feelin it.......2007-02-20

I just cant see the whole Mike Patton thing,I mean yeah hes a great vocalist and i CERTAINLY THINK HIS BEST WORK IS BEHIND HIM. Faith No More had a COUPLE of good albums, and im not talking about Epic, but drivel is drivel is drivel. Maybe I have been spoiled by some real cutting edge music,or some of the vastly talented bands that metal has to offer, even on the progressive side. I'm sorry guys, this stuff to me while interesting,is just a complete cacaphony of noise. Perhaps Mike Patton should get together with another vocal icon who has long since run out of gas,Axl Rose, and can do some 50's doo-wop and perhaps some ballroom standards. Now THATS cutting edge.

Imagine Frank Zappa composing the soundtrack for Ed Wood's Plan Nine from Outer Space, or the Residents unleashing a techno-dance project: that should give you some idea of Mr. Bungle's Disco Volante, an album of cheesy synthesizers, mangled disco beats, virtuosic playing, and juvenile noises. Like the Residents, Mr. Bungle is a Northern California band that obscures its true identity (it shares members with Faith No More) by prohibiting photos of its members and by using such funny names as I Quit (the drummer) and Uncooked Meat Prior to State Vector Collapse (the keyboardist). Like Zappa, the Mr. Bungle musicians like to show off their classical, jazz, and worldbeat influences in fast, difficult passages that are technically impressive but never seem to go anywhere. All but three of the album's dozen pieces feature lyrics, but the vocals are so deeply buried in the mix that the words are virtually indecipherable. The pieces are more accurately described as aural montages than songs, for short sections erupt and suddenly disappear, replaced by another passage just as well played and just as clever but with little connection to what preceded it. For listeners who enjoy the constant surprise of such arbitrary musical detours, Mr. Bungle provides much better musicianship than the Residents but less coherence than Zappa. --Geoffrey Himes

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for Crime!!!!.......2007-06-13

This album, like tequila, makes me feel felonious...

Track one - Song for going postal and shooting up your office
Track two - Song to be played whilst commiting arson at night
Track three - Song for doing massive amounts of heroin & cocaine
Track four - Song for engaging in a high speed chase with the cops

I could go further but you get the picture. Only the strong minded can derive strength from Disco Volante. The rest drive minivans and go to PTA meetings...

5 out of 5 stars Can i marry this album?.......2007-05-05

its pretty to describe the music of this album, except to say its just freaking insane. you cant really jump into this album. i couldnt. i had to get used to faith no more, and the equally as strange fantomas. I actually didnt even know this album existed untill one day stumbling upon it in the record store. I was like, "what is this?" it looked like something i would like, and at that time i had recently got into fantomas, suspended animation album. I loved this album right off, because it was un-like any other album i've heard. and it was so unique. crazy time sigitures, weird crap, metal, electronic, lots of organ, cool instrumental sections. its great in its own way. i'm peticulry partial to the closing track, " merry go bye-bye." i just love the melody and the way they arranged it. " carry stress in the jaw," is pretty unique, and what follows, "Spy."( secret song) One of the only, "real" traditional songs on here is, "after school special." its kinda short, until bouncing off into sound effect land. of course the instrumental " backstorkin'" by mike patton is pretty great. more organ. some songs are hard to get into at first, like, " violenza domestica," and "the bends." which has about 10 instumentals in one. overall cool album, great production and cool liner art. a must listen.

4 out of 5 stars Weirdest album I own...well, maybe fantomas.......2007-04-05

I love Bungle, and have tons of their live stuff. But this album is still hard for me to get into. While it is interesting, it's almost a little to weird for weirdness. The trouble is every once and a while we get a little more brillance. Recomended after you try Mr. Bungle and California first...and maybe a few of their underground albums too.

5 out of 5 stars Had to grow on me.......2006-03-16

It took a while but eventually this album grew on me but it did and now i listen to it alot. The best songs are carry stress in the jaw, after school special, ma meeshka mow skwoz, platypus and merry go bye bye. actually this is a great album i was going to give it four stars but i'll give it five now.

5 out of 5 stars Solid Gold.......2006-03-02

Fabulous. The first album took a while for me to like. It grew on me like a fungus until I was consumed by it. This album took even longer to grow on me. But then, one day, I don't know what happened, but I found out that this was amazing. Mr. Bungle has a way of doing that.

Unfortunately, there is no catigorization that will help you know if you will like this. All I can offer you is a sense of tone and felling. It can be abrasive; mocking; houmous, but sometimes at your expense; I often have the feeling that they are playing a trick on me, laughing at me for thinking that I am in on their joke, which I'm not, I am the joke, which has a strange pleasure; it is a bit sick, mentally; dark; playful; did I say humorous? it's funny.

You should get it. You'll be better off.

Album Description

Quirky and experimental hard-rock mixed with 70's lounge, flavored with innovative fretless-guitar and synth-guitar. Picture an urban metal band getting unruly at a karaoke bar, or Tom Jones singing with Mr. Bungle - that's Bumblefoot's "Uncool" CD. Riding the fence between romantic and hostile, classy and profane, like a musical take-off from the script of a future Austin Powers film. Intense yet lighthearted, entertaining with a hint of bottled-up anger, a fragile balance on the verge of exploding. Often labeled "the Frank Zappa of the New Millennium", take a listen to Bumblefoot and see why...

5 out of 5 stars Best rock album of 2001.......2003-02-16

Ronald Thal is up there with the best guitarists around, has a voice that can do just about anything, writes great melodies, songs and lyrics AND is a humble, kind fellow with heart. Where is this guys Grammy dammit, and why isn't the record label promoting the hell out of this re-release ? I want to hear these songs on the radio ! I discovered Ron by downloading almost all of his back catalogue on MP3, having never heard of him before that - it was a goldmine of gigantic proportions let me tell you and it all blew me away! He is now my favourite musician, next to Mike Patton and Victor Wooten :) And like these two guys, he doesn't give a rats about monetary success or glory, he just wants to do his art and ya gotta respect that.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing journey (taken from review at cdbaby.com).......2002-05-11

(taken from review at cdbaby.com) My favorite movies are the ones you can watch 10 times and discover new subtleties every time you watch them again. That's what this CD is like. It's like listening to a gig of Tony Clifton (comedian Andy Kaufman's alter-ego) with a metal band behind him. What really killed me is the last song, unlisted in the CD credits, it's a half-hour long with a repeating groove, where Bumblefoot does a vocal duet with a trombone and ocassionally goes off on spontaneous rants. Probably the only 30-minute song I'll ever be able to listen to in full. I guess this can be considered a concept album, but not in the sci-fi way you commonly see. And the 2 live-sounding segues are so funny! Imagine the worst frontman in a wedding band saying all the wrong things in an attempt to be sincere. There's still alot of trademark crazy Bumblefoot guitarwork on the cd, but mostly with a guitar-synth creating the illusion of an amazing flutist, pianist, or horn player. Definitely a unique album for any record collection, and one of those albums that gives you a sudden unexplainable "need" to go on a binge listening to it for 3 days straight and re-discovering it every few months...

5 out of 5 stars fan-f***ing-tastic!.......2007-05-14

Being a long time fan of all things Zorn/Patton/Dunn related...my musical journey brought me to this album. What a masterpiece this is...of course this is merely my opinion, but if you like free jazz, carefully placed dissonance/harmony, and excellent improvization, this is what you need!(assuming you also like the previously mentioned artists as well- which is not a pre-requisite, but certainly all worth investigating)
This trio indulges in clever, sometimes swingin' yet surprisingly structured pieces that never disappoint. There are flashes of utter car- crash-pile-up-noise-delight and moments of soothing (bordering on ambient at times) passages. It is difficult to tell how much of this is improvized and how much is pre-written. I can only assume from the parties involved that there is a bulk of pre-rendering and the improvized solo spots. For all I know it is mostly improvized. Regardless of my speculative ramblings, IT IS BRILLIANT. I have followed my interests musically to this point and think that this is the crux of electro-fusion-jazz done right. The trio's first album, "debutantes & Centipedes" is every bit as good and well worth tracking down (if this sound is your thing)...for us weirdos who get off on the unpredictable and avant garde, this trio is heavenly and the culmination of all things musically exceptional.....

if you dig this trio, be sure to check out John Zorn and his label Tzadik.
but also investigate Richard Woodson's Ellipsis. He is a guitarist who grew up under similar circumstances to Trevor Dunn...and plays jazz spiced with the aggression of metal. His first album is on Cuneiform records (I LOVE THAT LABEL...ALL OF THEIR BANDS ARE OUTSTANDING!).

maybe I should do a Rich Woodson review, eh?

either way, this album is Aces and the best thing I have heard in a long time. Love the inclusion of harp on the song "the single petal of a rose". Oh what a masterpiece......buy it!

1 out of 5 stars Vast Disappointment.......2006-08-08

I am a rabid lifelong fan of Patton, Dunn, Secret Chiefs 3, Zorn, etc. So I looked forward to this album with great anticipation.

Instead to my horror I found the most unbearable CD I have ever encountered. I am incredulous that the great Trevor Dunn could produce such uninspired crap. Why he hooked up with the world's most annoying guitar player and such a horrendous drummer I'll never understand. This is quite literally the worst CD I own in 30+ years of collecting. I rather listen beat my head against a wall, or be forced to listen to Yoko Ono or Phil Collins (!!!)than ever suffer through this garbage again. Please don't even fart in the general direction of this CD...it really is THAT bad. :(

Sitting around your apartment on a late weekday afternoon, with the sun peeking in through the venetian blinds, thinking about the fight you had with your boss about your parking priviliges and how he thinks he's better than you, you know?

That's what this ALBUM is all about. MAYBE it should be played on spaceships. PERHAPS NOT. But, maybe, you know?

5 out of 5 stars Trevor Dunn good. (FALL ASLEEP TO THIS ALBUM).......2004-12-08

This album has been one of my greatest influences. Trevor Dunn is a genious. I had first listened to him during the Fantomas years. Director's Cut was the first Ipecac album i had bought. Back then i was unaware of Dunn, but now he is the crux of my creative inspiraton. This album describes the exact way i feel when i am tired or restless and i am struggling to be active in whatever i am doing. The best way to listen to this album is when you come home after a long day and are half asleep. Or just listen to it.

4 out of 5 stars Potential 5 stars. Still growing on me........2004-11-23

Free Jazz is alive and well and living in San Fran.

I have been a devout fan of Mr. Bungle for quite sometime. All of these guys are great composers, Dunn being no exception. He has written some of my favorite pieces of music, including "Dead Goon," "Carry Stress in the Jaw," "Platypus," and "The Holy filament(sp?)."

With his trio, Dunn indulges his affinity for avant/free jazz with glowing results. There is plenty of structure here. The songs mostly follow a standard jazz format: Head, solos, head, out. The written material is harmonically expanded, very sophisticated stuff (of course) and Dunn really shows off his knowledge and musicality. The solo sections are most often "free" is the best sense of the term, slowly expanding upon the rhythmic, harmonic, and melodic motifs stated in the head.

The guitar playing is extremely odd, always erradic and sometimes annoying. For my taste, there is a bit too much high-pitched, frantic slide noise - kind of a Sonny Sharrock thing. It's interesting at first, but he seems to over-use this trick. But, like I said, it is still growing on me.

If you liked Bungle's Disco Volante and you also appreciate good avant improvisational music, this disc is perfect for you.

Album Description

"Hurry Up!...& Wait" is a raw yet refined display of Stinkaholics' coming of age. Being their fourth full length, this album reflects their eight year evolution. From their roots comes a variety of songs, with empahsis on PopSkaPunk, melodic punk, metal & rock. Although their influences (Operation Ivy, Primus, Tool, Mr Bungle, Faith No More & David Bowie) are prevelant, the music is still authentic and true to Stinkaholics' own style. With the addition of Steve on drums, the band has been able to achieve a sound that is tight, creative, energetic, emotional, and best of all, enjoyable. All this together makes for a great listening experience.

5 out of 5 stars Damn.......2002-09-22

This CD is beyond awesome. It hurts when you hear some of the other "Punk" bands who have made it big, then you hear a CD like this and realize that you're 1 of maybe 100 who actually own it. These guys are awesome live, but this CD really ... blew me away. You can hear with songs like "Hello" and "You and Everything" that they do have the potential to end up on more popular radio stations. Although, "Feel The Pain" was the song of the CD that Doughmain decided to promote. It's a great heavy song, but not exactly radio friendly. All the songs on here are awesome, that's all I can say. Go out and buy it today!

If you want your butts blown off buy this CD! It is what I call "fancy". See them live & it is "fancier". If you see them live & buy all their available CD's it is "fanciest". If you like musicianship of the finest variety, these hardworkin' boys are for you! If you've never heard Coinmonster then you are truley missing one of lifes precious musical gifts & I'm sad for you. There is hope though. Just buy it!

PS. It deserves more than 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars ..........2000-05-14

I have been listening to Coinmonster for a few years now, since I did live in Ohio for most of my life, and this cd is the best thing that could have happened to music in a long time. The problem with that is that not too many people have heard of the CM. If you happen to stumble upon this cd or any other CM disk and you like music, I would highly recomend that you purchase immediately. The music is incredible and highly addictive, I have not stopped listening to this cd (at least once a day) for three months now, and it just keeps getting better.

5 out of 5 stars Greatness!.......2000-03-31

These guys just keep getting better! I've had this cd for about a month now, and I still can't go a day without listening to it! I can't decide on a favourite track. One day 'Shiafu' is it then it's 'Little Lady' the next something else. Warning: Highly addictive cd! Out of the half dozen or so of ladies and gentlemen I know that have this cd, all of them are continually playing this cd. For an extra added treat, See them Live! Intense show, excellent musicians, and amazingly humble and nice guys.

Product Description

Psychetronic Rock for Mind Expansion Specimen 37's second release delves further into the psyche of the Specimen, chronicling a "week" in experiences. The struggle to find divinity and meaning in the seemingly mundane is a recurring focus for the Specimen. Some other topics grappled with are disconnectedness, despair, war, insanity, corporate capitalism, and genetic engineering. Stylistically diverse, yet with an overall cohesiveness, The Endless Looping Game continues Specimen 37's genre-bending journey into uncharted audio realms. From the angular, jarring rhythms and chaos of "Blow Things Up!", to the soothing swells of "Thursday Morning Jogger", the listener remains engaged.

4 out of 5 stars What is Life? Damned if I know!.......2004-09-18

But I do know I dig this album from our friends Specimen 37.

(See my review for their album, Adverse Reaction)

I didn't think they could beat their previous album but with the release of The Endless Looping Game, I see my fears were unfounded. They continue to evolve their psycadelic jamin' rock sound and have really hit their stride with this album. I've listened to it many times and find new bits to enjoy each time.
They still show hallmarks of bands that influence them but retain their own distinct voice throughout. If I had to think of a comparison to any one album, I'd say TELG reminds me of a better version of Roger Waters' Radio K.A.O.S. The topics they explore give the album a sci-fi feel, yet it is still immeadiately accessible.
If you enjoyed their first outing, I don't see how you can go wrong with this one.

* A really worthless CD, don't waste your time.
** A CD that has some good stuff, but some major defects. Don't bother unless completeing a collection.
*** An OK CD that will please fans of the artist in question but may not convert new listeners.
**** An excellent CD that represents the best work of the artist in question and can be bought with confidence.
***** An absolute classic that is the best, or among the best, of its genre. Your collection should start here.
