Fine reissue of a classic set.......2006-05-24
Think about the stupidest, most formulaic Hollywood movies you can think of: cheesy action pictures, fluffy, unfunny comedies, big but stiff epics. Now imagine that one of the greatest living composers was working in Hollywood, turning out astonishing, hauntingly beautiful and stirring musical scores for these throwaway movies. That's what you get with this set: music Henry Purcell composed for some two dozen often utterly forgettable plays (trust me--I've read a number of them!) Occasionally, when he teams up with a playwright worthy of his stature, such as John Dryden, Aphra Behn, or William Congreve, the results are even better, but for the most part you can enjoy the music here without knowing anything about the original plays.
This set originally appeared as separate LPs in the 70s and 80s, and has been long out of print. That's a pity, since Purcell spent a good deal of his short professional life in the theatre, either writing the incidental music contained on these CDs, or the music for his larger works, the semi-operas (King Arthur, The Fairy Queen, and the like). Almost all of these works are enjoyable gems; certainly, they represent a pinnacle of English 17th century music. Purcell had a genius for spinning musical gold out of the most leaden lyrics (check out his Odes and Welcome Songs on Hyperion if you don't believe me), and he does the same with the song texts in these plays.
Hogwood and the AAM offer clean, listenable performances, and the sound on these old analog discs has been cleaned up and brightened--although they were pretty good, even in the late 70s. As with most Hogwood, emotional extremes are kept to a minimum, so the "otherworldly" nature of late 17th century music, so often emphasised in more recent Baroque performances, doesn't come across here. It would be interesting to see what a group like The King's Consort would do with this music, but this set fills the major gap in the Purcell canon quite nicely.
My only beef with the reissue, as with many reissues, is that the liner notes are rather thin for a 6-cd set--the lyrics to the songs, for example, are especially missed. Still, it's a worthwhile set, and a must for fans of Purcell, English Baroque music, or anyone who just wants to experience a taste of the last days of the Restoration stage.

Damn these guys are terrible..........2005-10-07
I used to think rap was the worse form of "music" but then i found bands that are worse such as cannibal crap, anal c*nt, sfu, and these posers known as mortician, that make THE worse form of "music"...I mean mortician is worse then getting shot or anything else, that i can think of and their "music" is not and should never be consider metal at any point. Mortician's "mortal massacre" is an example of how bad slackers do anything not to work and i have no clue why relapse sign these idiots.Anyways, if you have any self respect ? Do not buy anything from mortician because all their "songs" are exectly the same as the one before and not a bit diffirent. Posers...
Worst Of Mortician.......2004-01-24
This is definitely Mortician's worst work. It comes packaged in a flimsy single case with a small Relapse Records catalog replacing any liner notes or lyrics.
As for the music, this is a CD release of Mortician's first EP, with 17 (!) bonus tracks, culled from a demo and two live recordings. Considering that every song except for the title track is rerecorded on "House By The Cemetery"; "Hacked Up For Barbecue"; and "Final Bloodbath Session", there's not really much point to buying this release, unless you're curious as to what the band sounded like with live drums. Furthermore, the sound quality on this CD is absolutely atrocious. You won't be missing much if you pass this one up.
For those of you who are curious, the movies sampled for this CD are "Night Of The Living Dead (1968)"; "The Shining"; and "Phantasm II".
Well it's their best so 1.5 stars.......2003-11-26
Brutal? YES Heavy? YES Boring? YES. A very monotonous deathmetal CD, Mortician is obviously obsessed with horror films and killing people, and well they play heavy but boring. Nothing interesting here. It's just plain stinkin boring, besides there are MUCH heavier bands out there like Nile, Carcass, Origin, Exhumed, Crimson Thorn, Disencumbrance, and Vomitorial Corpulence.
TRUE DEATH METAL!.......2001-06-13
This album flat-out rules. Mortician has to be the 2nd best death metal band ever behind Obituary. This CD is a definite 5 stars and it is so brutal that it is nearly impossible to listen to it without headbanging. If you are a death metal fan, or a fan of metal in general you have to buy this CD you wont regret it.

TRACK 13 TRACK13 TRACK 13.......2005-12-01
Just listen to the song "drilling for brains", there's that breakdown part that simply kicks a$$. It goes-THUMP thump THUMP thump THUMP thump THUMP thump. Death Metal briliance.
Great stuff..........2004-05-25
This album is really great! I wasn't a Mortician fan that long and when I first listened to them I did think...They suck because they have no skills. But one day I sat down and listened to them really closely...I gave them a second chance and they are totally brutal! They are one of my favorite bands now. I hate how people always talk crap about them just because they are not too skilled or technical...but tell you the truth...neither is rap. And somehow rap is the most listened type of music in America. Atleast Mortician plays guitar and sings with honesty. Rap is just all programable and anyone can go on stage talk really fast. Back to Mortician...they are a great band...just give them a try and they will grow on you. That is what they are...a disease of death. They have gotten a new drummer and I think they are really gonna shock and stun new and old fans. I can't wait until there next release. HAIL MORTICIAN!!!

New Hope for the death goth genre.......2007-03-23
A butterfly with broken wings, this is the image of a non reprocal love and the one of a soul that pines away trying to achieve something that is no longer hers; how impalpaple are the wings of a butterfly so it's love; when this cold and insesible world, as a sadistic divertissment causes pain, it perceives how fragile the wings of a butterfly are and break `em down but without killing her; a slow agony and the sufferings take place of love in a real way. Mortal Love from Norway, with the ethereal Cat as singer, are the flag-bearer of this butterfly, probably beacuse they felt on their skins this feeling and they tried to exorcize putting it to music; the indie label Massacre tries to re-launch herself after having discovered in the early 90's and made Europe screams for a miracle with Theatre of Tragedy (now only a pale shadow of their own). This combo plays, helped also during the recordings by some sessionmen, a kaleidscopic gothic metal in the best tradition of act as Theatre of Tragedy or the Gathering during the Mandylion era ,their more metal but also more suffered period, or the pining one with Nighttime Birds. The cd is based on eight tracks and each track has "middle-long" lenght, abot five minuets or more till the "pièce de résistance" I WANT TO DIE of a length about nine minutes. Everything starts in a smooth and ethereal way with "All the beauty" where Cat holds the listener spellbound, then she passes to assail with her voice and the band in "Crave your Love", where the anxiety for a loss, for the bitterness of parting begins to be unceasing; from "Beautiful One" to "Falling for you" and "in the Sun" the tragedy of leaving accomplishes, and the man who's leaving his beloved while entranching behind a screen of excuses (I love another one,I don't love you anymore, I want that we remain friends, we have to maintan contacts). In "Hate to Feel" the hate that she feels is not only against her beloved, parted one, but also against herself because she hates to feel, she hates to feel sensible, and in this song is where Mortal Love reache the acme of their bittterness with a "power goth" songs with where the whip is in Cat's vocal chords and the guitars and the rhythmic section create all around a wall of sound, harmonic but sad..."I want to die" asks only to be listened to bringing to the epiloge of this story the listener with a Cat that transforms hate and greed in love, love till death for her beloved one, till the extreme consequences! Mortally Beloved closes the cd that is a living manifesto of the gothic metal scene perhaps it prepares the road for a new born little star in the darkened gothic sky!
Wow..........2005-05-09
Simply amazing, this is a really good album and Cat's voice is so beautiful! I really, really recomend this album!
Stands up above other albums in the goth genre.......2005-03-14
This album is something quite different from all other goth albums. Their style is more stripped down compared to all of the other goth bands who go for complicated arrangements. Here, Kat is the star, as well as the other members of the band who do a very good job of translated the feelings of the theme into music.
You can go from soft songs, such as "Beautiful One", which seems to have nothing much to do with dark metal until you hear the out of phase keyboard and notice the dark, somber tone.
Most of the songs are decently hard, with crunchy guitars and heavy drums, contrasted with Kat's voice. This is a group that will not be subject to the common comparisons to Theatre of Tragedy and The Gathering. They're a sound all their own.
Amazing!.......2004-10-04
I must agree with the other reviewer. Here we have excelent and catchy melodies, nice keyboards, awesome guitar riffs, drums and great vocals from Cat. If you like gothic metal you will not be disappointed. I can't wait to get their second album. If you want to know more about them, visit http://www.mortallove.com
gothic "love" metal.......2003-08-25
When I read the words of the songs I got confused. What the hell is "gothic" here? Love me here, love me there, love me everywhere bla-bla-bla. But when I've first listened to this album, I really saw "all the beauty". The melodies are good, beautiful and depressing, the Cat's voice is great.
My favorite songs: All the Beauty, In the Sun, I Want to Die, Mortally Beloved.
if you like gothic metal with female vocalist, this is definitly for you.
