Album Details
Although Shining Brilliantly Against the Seventies Rock `n' Roll Firmament, the Seemingly Rapid and all Too Brief Career Arc of These USA Melodic Hard Rockers Still Baffles Fans and the Press Alike, Whilst Fellow Musicians (Jon Bon Jovi, Motley Crue's Nikki Sixx, the Wildhearts' Ginger and Metallica's Lars Ulrich) Cite Starz as a Major Influence on their Own Song Writing Endeavours. Signing to Capitol Records and Represented by Kiss' Bill Aucoin for Rock Steady Management, the Elements for a Glorious Career Seemed in Alignment. However, Record Company Ineptitude and Management Complacency all Conspired to Cheat the Band from a Radiant and Rewarding Long-term Career. For all the Industry's Failings, Starz' Ability to Perform a Blinding Rock Show and Capture the Hearts of American Rock Fans with their Live Performance Never Waned and as Such, the Band's Recent Reformation Has Been Greeted with Enthusiasm from all Quarters.

Great Comeback!.......2007-07-01
What a pleasure it was to see this show released, not just because i was fortunate enough to be at the show, but it was so cool to see a truely under rated band again! Starz were frequent visitors to the Cleveland area back in their heyday in the mid to late 70's. They never got the justice they deserved, but these guys were awesome. Now jump almost 30 years ahead, and the band sounds as good or better than before. This is a complete show which was 19 tracks including all the hits such as Live Wire, Cherry Baby, Pull the Plug, Fallen Angel, Detroit Girls, Boys in Action, and many more. The only sad note was that Brendan missed his flight from New York, and it left Ritchie to handle all the guitar work, and a great job he did!(the entire band did as a four-piece). a nice little surprise of this show, was a Starz fanatic that just happened to be a guitar player got up onstage and played a track with Starz! Great Show, great sound, great crowd! You won't be disappointed! This set is not only a special treasure to me, but any fan of great classic rock will surely enjoy!

Overlooked Classic From An Overlooked Band.......2005-10-29
Starz was seemingly poised to hit the big time...make that the big, big time...when this album appeared. Everything was in place. Great band, good songs, top notch stage act. Somehow, it just did not come together. Was "Violation" a disappointment? Sales wise, yes. As far as the music is concerned, however, it delivers the goods on all counts. The should-have-been-a-smash-single "Cherry Baby", "the title track, "All Night Long", and the hilariously naughty "Cool One" show a band hitting it's prime. For all you metal fans out there who missed out the first time around, pick this one up and give it a listen. You may find yourself wondering why this band disappeared after only four studio albums.
ROCK STARZ.......2005-10-28
This enrgetic 70s rock quintet featured one time pop idol Rex Smith's brother Michael on high pitched lead vocals, but unfortunately, never became as big as their name implied. A pity, because VIOLATION, their hands down best album effort, was chock full of slick, dumb-fun rockers (they were once tagged by one reviewer as a mini-KISS). Almost hit CHERRY BABY, sleazy seducer C.O.O.L. ONE, the futuristic title tune, and would be arena anthem SING IT, SHOUT IT were possibly too heavy for AM radio yet too pop for FM. Starz nonetheless delivered the goods, deserving far better status than a mere footnote in pop rock annals. That's what I call a "VIOLATION". RATING: FOUR STARZ
Great Songs! Great Sound!.......2005-09-20
I've always loved this album. I was missing it terribly from my life when I discovered it on Amazon, remastered. The remastering is excellent. They have captured the sonic excellence of the original album plus. The album has that great guitar sounds that seems like it's being played it the same room as the listener at times. Of course, Micheal Lee's vocals scream with digital clarity. Fantastic, absolutely fantastic!
Classy Follow-up.......2005-08-05
Striking while the iron was hot, Starz' "Violation" is another parade of smart, tightly constructed and compressed bursts of six-string effervescense, lean, dirty and riff oriented as the band, feeling their oats, let their creative psyche run wild, another Jack Douglas knob job, not as brawny as the debut but targeted with a purpose at middlest America.
Shoulda-been-huge summer heartland single "Cherry Baby" is confident jangle pop with a metallic basecoat, ringing guitars, an insistent, loping bass line courtesy of the late Peter Sweval, and harmonies and a melody you may need to scrape off your cerebellum with a spatula, quite likely the greatest song these guys ever wrote. To his eternal credit, Michael Lee Smith doesn't try to overpower or overstate his vocal delivery, but, like any great front man worth his salt, plays to the camera nonetheless, in turn creating a chorus for the ages.
"Sing It, Shout It" opens with deceptively jazzy Brenden Harkin strumming remniscent of Bachman-Turner Overdrive's "Blue Collar" before positively blossoming into another solid-as-oak Starz shouter, brimming with another strutting, euphoric Smith turn at the mic. Kiss may have had the stage props, but Starz fed 'em their lunch when it came to songwriting.
The manic title track would fit snugly on The Sweet's "Desolation Boulevard" or "Give Us A Wink" with an opening drum pattern copped from "Ballroom Blitz," a cautionary tale set in the not too distant future where "The Committee" has decreed that something as harmless as listening to rock and roll music is, uh, a violation. Even though Son of Sam killer David Berkowitz, who now maintains his own web site from within prison walls, didn't do his dirty work on the tube, "Subway Terror" will forever bring him to mind, four-string thunder courtesy of Sweval.
From there it's down the home stretch and back to the shed with the classy "All Night Long," the sleazy flamboyance of "Cool One" (chicken soup for the soul - "She reached over and she squeezed on my rocks/I lost it all in the popcorn box, yeah"), and the vaguely Aerosmithesque "S.T.E.A.D.Y.," the band kicking up a fair amount of dust before coming to a screeching halt with the flaccid theatrics of "Is That A Street Light Or The Moon?" What were they thinking?
At that point, Starz appeared indestructible, but despite an upward spike in sales to 350,000, the wheels came off after "Violation" in what smells suspiciously like our heroes caving in to record company demands for a hit with the soft, flirtatious radio rock of "Attention Shoppers!" "Coliseum Rock" was a slight return to form, but by that point the band was done like dinner, at least in Capitol's eyes.
Excellent Hard Rock from an underrated Band!!!!.......2005-03-14

Album Description
Starz, Violation, Attention Shoppers and Coliseum Rock. Each re-mastered CD contains bonus tracks, including rare demos and unreleased songs as well as expanded artwork and previously unseen photos. New liner notes written with input from guitarist Richie Ranno tell the entire history of Starz in four chapters, one included with each CD. A special added bonus makes the series a must-have for collectors: when all four CD spines are lined up together, they form the original Starz logo!
Customer Reviews:
Who are these guitar players?.......2007-05-18
This song (Coliseum Rock) and the guitar skill and music writing genius are really second to none. This is really Hendrix, Van Halen, Les Paul, Vai, Satrioni class and I don't even know his name(s). This will come back out and be known is my humble and feeble prediction.
Starz- Don't Pull The Plug On This One!!!! .......2006-08-04
Sometimes I like to look up and see what I can find on some of my favorite bands from the 70's and Starz being one of them. I was lucky enough to see the band play a few times around 77 and 78. Another band that took time for their fans!!!!!!!
I read through the many reviews of posted here on amazon and not sure if there is much that I can add, also great to see that there were so many out there that enjoyed the band and their music. I would recommend reading about each of the Starz cd's and listening to the sound files if available and deciding for yourself........ I remember I liked this cd so much and the logo as well, I even hand- made a stencil and made my own Starz shirt, I think I used some of that gold "glue on glitter" in a tube and had one of the first Starz shirts, before the band even had any if I remember right.
Lots of good songs on this cd, Pull the Plug being one of my favorites both on the LP/CD and live. All good rock songs from a band that deserved a lot more.........
I could go on trying to describe the music.......... too bad there are no sound files for this cd....... so you may just have to order it and take a chance. The remaining members have played a few shows during the past year or so and guitar player Richie Ranno continues to be active in the music business, you may even want to go over to starzcentral to get updated and see what Richie and the band are up to. Singer Michael Lee Smith also had a brother that had his own band and later ventured into Hollywood....... but this is about Starz!!!...So.... I highly recommend checking out the CD's and starzcentral. Not to be confused with the movie channel or another band from Europe that is using the name recently.
A lost jewel found!.......2005-11-09
I found this CD on accident. I was only 7 when this album came out. But to say that I missed out on this group is an understatement. I am from the West Coast, so we were not able to have exposure to Starz as the East Coast. This CD is awesome...I wished I could have been listening to this in 1976 instead of Wings or Elton John. Buy this CD!!!! You will not go wrong...Detroit Girls should have been a huge hit....
Worth The Hype.......2005-10-30
Starz' debut was accompanied by a great deal of promotional hype from Capitol Records, and for once the hype was justified. Their live act always drew rave reviews, and the debut album delivered a solid underpinning for the group's foundation. However,Starz had yet to completely solidify their sound. That would happen with the next album, "Violation". In the meantime, "Starz" is a good, by the numbers hard rock album with a few standout cuts ("Night Crawler", "Monkey Business", Detroit Girls") and a bit of controversy ("Pull The Plug") thrown in for good measure. Four stars easily, and just shy of five star territory. Their best was one album away.
Killer riffs, clever lyrics, an air-guitar classic.......2005-07-18
Two things make this remastered, reissued first album from '70s rockers Starz absolutely delightful:
1. I saw Starz in 1976. One of my first concerts. I loved their stage design, sound and songs.
2. I bought this album when it first came out and was enthralled with it then. I still am.
Even without the remastering, the sound on the first Starz album is meaty. Very bottom-heavy. Great bass lines and low-end riffs. Plus, the guitar tone is amazing. This is really a guitar-lovers guitar album.
I like every song, but my personal favorites come from "side one" of the album -- Detroit Girls, Live Wire, Tear It Down, Boys In Action and (She's Just A) Fallen Angel. Every song is fantastic. The riffs just jump out of the speakers.
For my money, this CD ranks up there with the best of the debut albums that I consider my all-time favorites (sharing this list are Montrose's first, the first Angel album, the first VanHalen album and the first Marillion album).
Now, on to the remastering and the extra tracks...
Nice. Sweet, in fact. The album sounded great when it was first released, but the remastering enhances every instrument -- including Michael Lee Smith's vocals.
The five extra tracks are demos and fascinating to hear.
Bottom line: If you've never heard Starz, but you love riff-laden music that you can rock out to, you should try this CD. It doesn't cost much, but the rewards from listening to it will be huge.
I whole heartily recommend the first Starz CD!

kumbia all starz.......2007-04-01
AB continued to do what he did with the kumbia kings, which is not a bad thing. He did very well considering that most artists that change names or go a seperate way dont do well at their first attempt. This album was going to be the next kumbia king album, but then the feud came on and it came out as the all starz. There are great songs featured on this album, including "mami", good for dancing, "anoche no dormi", "chiquilla", very much like the kings' "mi dulce nina". Overall it is great. I took away one star because of he remixes of "chiquilla", whihc i feel shouldn't have been made. They have no excitment. Should've kept it original.
Modern Latin Music.......2007-03-26
I enjoy this particular CD especially the songs; each one had a personality of their own. The Kumbia Kings group did a okay job presenting their titles. Overall, They could of been more selective about some songs which I didn't personally really didn't care for.

better than zeppelin, the stones and humble pie. .......2007-03-18
that this band is still overlooked is a downright rotten disgrace. this is the 2nd best rock and roll album ever recorded, right behind the band's debut. in the world of rock and roll, there is no one better.
Under-rated classic rock.......2007-01-18
I bought "Coliseum Rock" when I was about 14, and I played it until it was useless. I looked for years to buy it on CD, and had no luck until recently, and if you could wear out a disc, I'd do it again! This is a must have for any rock fan. STARZ was so under rated then, and still is. This CD and their "Violation" CD's are awesome, and they never get 'old'.
Starz Last Studio Shot.......2005-10-29
After three albums which barely registered on the charts, Starz regrouped, added a new bassist and guitarist, and pulled out the metal stops for "Coliseum Rock". Unfortunately, as so often happens when you tamper with the chemistry of a group, the slightly changed sound of the band causes it to sound a tad generic. The "Starz Sound" is not quite there. What is here are some classic songs (So Young, So Bad", "Outfit", "It's a Riot", and what may be their best song, "Last Night I Wrote a Letter") mixed in with some cuts that are a cut below the standard. Starz called quits after this one, and it's a shame. Underappreciated, they remain the 70's best unknown hard rock band.
Starz - An obscure rock band if ever there was one.......2005-06-15
Starz had 4 studio albums back in the late 1970's and then one rehashed release ("Requiem") of some live and unreleased tunes in 1995. Their debut "Starz" (1976) started off great with songs like "Detroit Girls", "Live Wire", and "Fallen Angel". They continued their brilliance with "Violator (1977). "Coliseum Rock" (1978) was the band's 3rd and last great release ("Attention Shoppers" was just plain bad). Michael Lee Smith's vocals never sounded better than here. Ritchie Ranno simply shredded on guitar. And, Joe X Dube was amazing on drums. This album rocks steady for the most part with a few rock ballads thrown in for good measure. This is easily my favorite Starz album... with great rock songs like "Take Me", "No Regrets", "It's A Riot", "Where Will It End", and the instrumental guitar (and feedback) song "Coliseum Rock". Perhaps their biggest hit here was "So Young, So Bad" - more of a pop song, though still a good tune, probably my least favorite on the album. Bad management or producer? No promotion? No idea why Starz didn't fare better... they deserved it. The 2 bonus tracks are taken from "Requiem" ("Vidi OD" and the ballad "You Called His Name") are absolutely worthless and deemed skippable. Starz peaked with "Coliseum Rock"... if you had to buy one of theirs - this is it - it still rocks 25+ years later! The album cover artwork is the best of their 4 original releases. Thank you Ryko for re-releasing these lost albums with remastered sound. Classic 70's rock & roll... great album.
Fantastic.......2005-04-03
A blast from the past! This is one group I listened to in the late 70's and into the 80's a lot. Thank goodness this CD is now available, my album is virtually worn out. The song Coliseum Rock, followed by It's A Riot, are meant to be played loud...very loud! Some of the songs are for the teenage crowd (as I once was) and do now sound juvenile to me, but hey, who wasn't young once. Songs like Where Will It End, Last Night I Wrote A Letter and No Regrets will definitely rock you. If your are familiar with this album, then you know what I mean, and if your not familiar with this album and you are looking for some amazing rock, get this CD!!

attention amazon shoppers! you have to have this record! this is the 3rd greatest rock and roll album ever recorded, behind only the band's debut and coliseum rock!
Searching for Airplay.......2005-10-30
After the commercial disappointment of their second album "Violation", Starz decided to court AM radio with a more tune oriented, less aggressive approach. "Anyway You Want It " was the single that brushed the charts, and that was about it. The rest of the album has some good stuff ("Hold On To The Night", "She", "Don't Think", "The Third Time Is The Charm"), but nothing that would grab a radio programmer's ear. It was also a let down for fans after the classic "Violation", and the solid debut album. Rather than building their core audience, Starz grabbed for the brass ring, and came up empty.
They never made it for a reason.......2005-06-15
Since 1980 I have tried in vain (and hard) to really like this band. Although Starz are comprised of competent players, their songs are simply bogawful! Sorry, it's as simple as this.
(Two star rating for the nice guitar sound)
Their weakest album but it's a good late 70's rock album.......2005-05-30
Of all the Starz albums that I own I would say that this is my least favorite album but it does contain some classic songs like X-Ray Spex, Good Ale We Seek, Hold on to the Night and the 7 minute epic Johnny All Alone, at first when I listened to this album I remember feeling really dissapointed by it and it almost made me gave up on them, fortunately I decided to check and see how good the Coliseum Rock album and I thought that it was a great album, it made me become a bigger fan of them and I went out to buy their first two albums.
I think that Starz should've been as big as KISS, Aerosmith, Ted Nugent and Cheap Trick.
What a masterpiece!.......2005-03-29
You want to know something. Back in early 1978 Led Zeppelin's Physical Graffiti was entering its swan song. With hits like Kasmir and Trampled Under Foot topping the charts of Heavy Metal consumption, there seemed to be a void in the Hard Rock world. Yes, Van Halen was to release their debut album that year. However, there was a group that had already paid their dues, already put out two albums of New York flavored Hard Rock, and already to put out a kick ass new album. Yes!!!!! The band is known as STARZ!!! The new album? ATTENTION SHOPPERS! Pay attention? Hell yes pay attention, because this is one of the most important rock album debuts ever! Beginning with the intro X-Ray Spex through Waitin on You, this album is stunning! Every single song is catchy and will burn into your synapsis guaranteed! It is definitely one of the greatest Hard Rock albums of all times. Do me a favor. The next time you're in your ride and are doing over 70 MPH, have X-Ray Spex blaring through your speakers and you will get it!!!!!!!

bought it for one song.......2006-09-04
This is okay. I liked "Shes just a fallen angel" when I was young. This is passable melodic metal by a band that never made it past being a regional act, despite getting some decent hype from the 1970's rock mags like Creem and Circus.
Starz-Highly underrated but never forgotten!!.......2005-08-14
This cd is excellent and for any starz fan you can always add another 10 songs to this anthology! But you have to remember that the record companies and possibly the band choose the tracks! I've seen and photographed Starz and loved the band live! They are one of my favorite all-time bands. But don't shun the Anthology cd because it doesn't have all your favorite songs. They had some great hits in the 70's and in my opinion some other songs that could have been hits! I'm fortunate enough to have some of my pictures on the bands web site and if you want check it out www.starzcentral.com . The anthology cd is still a great deal or buy all the studio albums that have been remastered and with bonus tracks from the requiem cd.
Either way enjoy the music!!!

Just some trivia for you.......2004-02-06
I'll let the other reviewers wax poetic about this cool 70s rawk band, but I wanted to add that the singer's brother, Rex Smith, had a minor-league TV hit at one time, and released an album under the band name "REX". It included a great song called "Ten Seconds of Love." If you're a Starz fan it might be worth trying to find a copy of this, as the band was very much in the same vein as Starz.
A poorly-chosen compilation.......2003-07-22
I get the feeling that whoever chose the songs for this album was not a Starz fan. To leave off "Last Night I Wrote a Letter," "Riot," and "Outfit" is ridiculous. Why not give us
Coliseum Rock on CD instead?
Your outfit is making me crazy

C'mon Teresa and let me in...
To your outfit
It's classic 70's I've worn out my vinyl version. Starz sometimes sounds like a garage band, but when they get it right, they really get it right ("So Young, So Bad.") Unfortunately, if you never heard Starz in their vinyl heyday, this is one of your few choices. I wish it could be different. Still, if you're looking for something that rocks, from a simpler, less-over-produced time, this is a good place to start.
Very Good - Underrated Group of the Mid to Late 70's.......2003-06-20
First : all of their CDs SHOULD be available for sale at our local stores...come on record companies re-issue them.
Second: You can buy all of their albums except Brightest Starz from the groups Web Site:...
You can also buy several live albums and other STARZ "stuff".
Three: This is a very good album with a good sampling from their four releases. I agree ... that Violation is probably their best single album and 6 songs out of the 18 on this album or from Violation.
Highly recommended.
(Other groups to consider: Angel, Budgie, Montrose, and MOUNTAIN/Leslie West!!!)

Gone, But Not Forgotten.......2006-07-27
I had the privelige of seeing Starz when they were first on the rise. A beautiful pre-spring day in March 1977,'Cherry Baby' was starting to get noticed, and I had third row seats to Starz as the opening band to Bob Seger on the 'Night Moves' tour. Starz came on at 8:00, opening with 'Violation' blew our minds, eyes and ears for the next hour and a half, and I feel they could have kept going if not for the fact that drummer Joe Dube collapsed on his drums and had to be carried off the stage in what was the only disappointing moment of the evening. This band had something that most people were not able to fully appreciate....THEY CAME TO ROCK!!!!! No fancy light shows or special effects, just being great for who they were and how they sounded---a band that was not given the time or attention they deserved.
A Blast From the Past.......2002-01-16
I have been raised on rock. When Starz came out in the mid 70's, it was a breath of fresh air. These boys rock. For anybody who doesn't really knows this band, the have the ... to roll a 4 track recorder with them and record their live show, then put it out as an album. That takes guts. This album represents some of their finer songs. Although there really isn't any song they have done I have disliked... Get the CD and see for yourself. "GOTTA ROCK 6 TIMES ALRIGHT!
live with styx and frampton.......2001-03-22
I saw Starz live with Styx and Peter Frampton a few months before Frampton made it big in the mid-70s. I hoped that Starz would make it big, but Styx made it bigger. Oh well, anyway its a pleasant high school memory from the 70s.
Starz Rocks Live..The Old Fashioned Way..........2000-10-05
This CD is a great compilation of Starz early rock tunes...Pull The Plug is a mesmorizing live tune, much like Cheap Trick's "Need Your Love". Boys In Action, Subway Terror, Live Wire, Cherry Baby and the rest are solid amped rockers that make this one terrific purchase! For even more, the "Brightest Starz Anthology" has all the great material from the studio, that rocks every bit as much as the live CD (Amazon just delivered mine today...It's now available) If you're a fan, buy these CDs. If you like to rock... these deliver! SJ from So. Cal.
Starz Rocks Live, and finally on CD!.......2000-09-30
After recording my albums to cassette, I thought I'd never be able to hear Starz on CD. This CD has top quality sound, and the song selections are excellent. These underated rockers deserve to be heard. When the anthology CD is available, I will be at the head of the line. Great memories have been rekindled thanks to this CD. If you like rock at it's roots, buy this CD!
