With a nihilistic CD title and band name, you'd expect Nothingface to be heavy, serious, and dark. And you'd be correct. The Washington, D.C.-based band, however, is not really nu metal. In fact, Nothingface displays a kinship to Trouble and King's X, thanks to wonderfully complex and layered production and a taught progressive-rock musicality. Which isn't to say Nothingface aren't modern; thanks to in-your-face aggression and ferocity, they're definitely mosh-pit worthy. From "Make Your Own Bones," where singer Matt Holt takes on a fierce, growling death-metal timbre to the more melodic "Bleeder" and "Filthy," the vocals and instrumentation segue smoothly from melodic interludes to raging, head-banging segments, often within one song. With their third album, Nothingface have created a creative, cohesive, diverse breakthrough. --Katherine Turman
Customer Reviews:
I can't wait for this Violence. It's that good........2007-04-13
Nothingface bows to no one. In my opinion, Matt Holt has the best voice in heavy music today. Right up there with Maynard from Tool. This cd is probably the best example of the diversity of Nothingface's music. There are brutally heavy songs where Matt does an awesome job of screaming and growling, and there are some more melodic, progressive moments. "For All the Sin" is my personal favorite Nothingface song, and I sing this one all the time. It hasn't left my head in seven years since this was released. No other song has had this much of an impact on me. If you love heavy music, buy this and their other cds immediately. It may take a few listens to get into it, as it is not for the faint of heart. This is not nu-metal, rather, they prefer to call themselves extreme rock. And I think that is a good term for them. They belong in their own category because they have aspects of so many styles evident in their music.
Apt and Important.......2006-05-26
When a band are really firing on all cylinders you can tell. It makes no difference what type of music you're listening to, be it classical or jazz or metal or pop; the key is that the album will be easy to listen to all the way through. "Violence" is an excellent example of an album where everything is working perfectly. From the first driving riff in "Make Your Own Bones" to the voice-shredding, headbanging final strains of "Piss & Vinegar", this is an album that amounts to more than the sum of its 12 tracks.
I was originally drawn to Nothingface by Matt Holt's stunning vocals and they remain the most important thing about this band for me. There are other vocalists who are more technically proficient and there are other vocalists who are more adventurous, but seldom have I heard a vocal performance with the sheer weight and intensity that Matt delivers. You can hear it in every scathing lyric and every screamed obscenity; this guy means what he sings. Not every lyric makes perfect sense to the listener, but they all must make sense to Mr. Holt because you feel the vocals as much as you hear them.
The guitar and bass work on this album are also not to be missed. Tom Maxwell has one of the most ridiculous right hands in the guitar world. His riffing is technically proficient and very fast, but it never sounds thrashy or uncontrolled. There are a few short solos (or solo-like moments) but they're only for accent. It's all about the riff for these guys and there are some big, groovy monsters on this disc. Think southern rock played at 2x speed, that'll give you and idea. Bill Gaal's basswork only adds to the groove-heavy vibe, acting as an excellent compliment and contributing an almost stiflingly heavy bottom end.
And then of course, there's the substantial wall of drumming coming from behind it all and really driving the music on this album. Chris Houck throws more fills on this beast of a record than seems possible. The first few times I listened, I was actually a bit annoyed by it, but it grew on me because it's done differently than most other spastic metal performances. How so? It isn't driven by heavy reliance on staccato double bass. He does use some, but it's more of an accent than the backbone of the rhythm section. Instead, the fury and intensity of his performance is driven by his snare. If you're wondering what the hell I'm talking about, just listen to "Everlasting Godstopper" (especially the first minute).
So there are excellent performances all around. That still doesn't guarantee a standout CD. You also need good production and execution. "Violence" has both. The production is tight, just a tiny bit dirty, and thickly layered. There are little electronic elements thrown in everywhere, voice samples (a Nothingface tradition), even a few momentary acoustic breakdowns. On the execution side of things, the presentation of the lyrics in the liner notes is both entertaining and properly disturbing. Read the lyrics along as you listen to the disc and you will get an excellent feel for the emotional road this album is taking you down.
All of the above are great reasons to buy a cd, but none of them are really why you should buy this particular cd. Here's the real reason: this is an album that dropped right in the middle of the "Nu-Metal" movement and right at the beginning of the post-hardcore/metalcore/emo/mallcore clone-fest that has become modern hard rock. Going back to 1996 and the "Pacifier" days, Nothingface has always been one of the only bands to successfully take little pieces of all those genres and turn them into something unique and refreshing. Yes, you will hear screamed verses that lead into singing choruses but it won't sound anything like Killswitch Engage or any of their clones. And yes, you will hear electronic elements and sound samples, but it won't sound like Fear Factory or Rammstein or Mudvayne.
In the end, I recommend buying this album because it's full of honest-feeling, genuinely angry, uniquely delivered, make-you-want-to-drive-fast hard rock/metal. It's an important release that will (or at least should) be remembered as one of the only good things to come of the Nu-Metal era. Pick it up.

In The Bloody Backseat Of My Black Hearse.......2005-09-15
Nothingface will cut into your wrists then lick the wound close. The band can perform many different forms of metal and rock, On just this album alone. Though they bring it all together to make their own original genre which I've heard Matt Holt call "Metal of The Wretched". I don't consider Nothingface Nu Metal, They are beyond most Nu Metal bands skills! With Bill Gaal putting down incredible bass lines and keyboard melodies. Tom Maxwell shredding up headbang worthy riffs and rememorable rhythm that will bw stuck in your head for days to pass. Then theres Matt Holt, Which happens to be one of my fav singers, His Death Metal like growls are clean enough to understand, and his actual singing.. Is amazing, Clean voiced and powerful. The lyrics are personal "You know its hard to face you, When I know what you did.. Your sorry. Stay far away from you, Im sick and tired of you too. But theres the way you move, Dressed up in lies, Beds in truth" for instance. The one thing thats stands out above all is that this album was the last that drummer Chris Houck played on!Infact both Chris and new drummer Tommy Sickles played on this one, whom did which songs.. I have no clue but the drumming is excellent through out this album and brings the music together.
SONG RATING
-Make Your Own Bones ***** Good N' Heavy right off the get go. Very good opening song, Giving you a taste of Nothingface's originality
-Bleeder ****** Amazing!! This is a stand out song on Violence, The Vocals are very melodic and the lyrics will get stuck in your head!
-Same Solution ***** Brutal pummeling, The lyrics wickedly talk of murder & killing you. This song shows how brutal and heavy the band gets.
-For All The Sin ****** This is easily one of my favs on the album, With clean vocals through out of what seems to me a Cheating Relationship.
-Can't Wait For Violence ****** This mixes Nothingfaces Brutal & Calm styles well! Making one amazing song. This is a MUST HEAR!!
-Dead Like Me ****** This is a very melodic and dark song. The lyrics are depressing, But yet done very well. The Vocal work is excellent.
-Blue Skin ***** The reason I give this five stars not six is cause the lyrics lack here. Though this is easily the best Bass line on the album!!
-Filthy ****** Another stand out song. The band really come together on this one. My fav vocals & lyrics on the album. Very Melodic Very Dark.
-Hidden Hands ****** This is a VERY intelligent song, Both lyrically and musically. Matt uses both his Clean and Death Metal vocals.
-American Love ***** Brutal, But with melodic breaks. This song is also about murder and killing.
-Everlasting Godstopper ******* My fav song on the album, This is about god holding you back. And the suffering of the world by him.
-Piss & Vinegar ****** A brutal finish to a great album, This song really shows where they went to musically after Violence.
All an all, Nothingfaces Violence is not for your average Nu Metaler only but for avid metalers as well. On another note I can't help but see the similairities between Nothingfaces style and Mudvaynes. And seeing how Mudvayne happens to be friends of Nothingface its easy to say they might have rubbed off on each other musically. Get this album, Even if your a bit skeptical of the Nu Metal undertones.. You'll thank me in the end.
They Were Gods Amoung Their Peers.......2005-08-24
I remember when I bought my first Nothingface album-it was "Skeletons", and I bought it about a month or so after it came out. I had never heard a full Nothingface song before, only short sample clips, but I did like what I heard. So I put in "Skeletons" and wasn't too impressed, but after time, it grew on me...a lot. So then I purchased their release prior to "Skeletons", "Violence". I really wasn't expecting what I heard.
"Skeletons", with the exception of a few songs, is a very accessible album. Not Simple Plan or Limp Bizkit accessible, but any fan of modern rock could put it in a more than likely get a kick out of it. "Violence" is a different kind of album. Basically, it's heavier...WAY heavier. Sure, it's got nothing on Decapitated or Cannibal Corpse in terms of sheer brutality, but for a band that released "Skeletons", wow, I was shocked. And displeased. The album simply didn't grow on me. I tried to listen to it, but I just got bored. I mean, the songs dragged on, Matt's voice often sounded like a monotone drone, etc. So I put it up on the shelf and never listened to it again.
Until three days ago that is. And wow, what a change time can make. "Make Your Own Bones" sounds so much more awesome than it did two years ago. As I said, this is not an accessible album, and when I first listened to this album two years ago my favorite band was Linkin Park; now it's In Flames.
So does that mean the album won't grow on YOU? Probably not, as I noticed this album has had a lot of praise in reviews on Amazon and by critics. But as I said, you have to listen to it a few times, pay close attention to the music. This isn't mind boggling complex music; however, it's not extremely simple either. Matt Holt's voice has power in it-power I mistook for droning when two years ago. I mean, this guy can sing. His vocal lines in the chorus in "Bleeder", "Blue Skin" and all throughout "Filthy" are haunting. And what a scream. Listen to "Make Your Own Bones" or "Blue Skin" to see what I mean.
Tom Maxwell isn't an amazing guitarist, but he sure is solid. His riffs aren't too simple, and they're catchy, heavy, and deliver punch. But they're not easily forgettable either, at least not after the first few listens. Bill Gaal's bass actually cuts through, providing clear added distortion for the rest of the band. The band has two drummers on this record. Why? I'm not sure. It sounds like one drummer to me. But anyway, the drummer(s) do(es) a good job on this record, making good single-bass backing beats for the band to jam over.
Nothingface specializes in mixing brutality with beauty. One second they're a death metal band, the next they're a melodic rock band. The contrast works amazing on this record. But they don't stray too far from writing catchy hooks-listen to the verses of "Blue Skin" and try not to bob your head to Matt's menacingly catchy vocal lines.
So, in conclusion, this is a record for a fan of hard rock, metal, heavy metal, nu-metal, hell, even melodic death metal. Nothingface was truly a great, innovative band in a time where Limp Bizkit clones were endless; they truly stood out, but sadly never got the fame they deserved. But their works remain for us, the fans, to enjoy. So give `em a try.
violent and freaking ridiculously good.......2005-01-01
i was just about to turn this album in used a couple of years ago, as it got lost int he shuffle of my collection.i decided to give it a fair chance and boy i made the right choice.this album rocks.and thats an understatement."make your own bones" blows up track one and lights the fire which becomes an all out blaze throughout the rest of the record."bleeder", the catchy metal song on here,is a brilliant piece of heavy radio rock."same solution" is a scathingly heavy song that cuts thru the ears."for all the sin" mellows out a bit.my favorite song, "blue skin",wow.very catchy chorus and the breakdown in the middle of the song is sick tight.this album is incredible.singer matt holt really knows how to control his voice, the drumwork is fabulous, and the guitars just explode.amazing cd.for fans of spineshank, slipknot, and system of a down.

The masterpiece of Nothingface.......2007-04-13
This is probably their least accessible album because it is very heavy and it may not be the easiest one to start with, but it is universally agreed to be their masterpiece. While it is only nine songs long, every one comes together to form one cohesive metal monster. Nothingface destroys the boundaries of what heavy music can be, and creates their own distinct sound that is instantly recognizable. Matt Holt is one of the best vocalists around. They receive my highest recommendation.
BEST GROUP EVER...SERIOUSLY........2006-03-22
I am not going to write an in depth review, I am just going to express my opinion of this amazing group. I found Nothingface by accident one day looking for music to download. I figured I would give them a try, since I am SO picky when it comes to music. When I first listened to their music, I was blown away. These guys will rock your face off. They have a VERY dark and heavy sound, not the heaviest sound, but they have an amazing combo of great voals and great instrumentals. I would also like to add that Nothingface is NOT dead, in fact they will be releasing another album some time this year. If you like music that isn't like everything else out therem and if you like heavy, dark music, I HIGHLY recommend Nothingface.
A Classic...R.I.P. Nothingface 1995-2004.......2005-04-26
I paid 17 bucks for this...I normally don't pay over ten bucks for CD's, but I couldn't find this used, as a lot of people like Nothingface, so I bought it for 17 bucks. None of those 17 bucks were wasted. You are probably thinking that Nothingface is "yet another nu metal band". Wrong. Nothingface, unlike many of the carbon copies, know how to deliver some brutal stuff. These tracks are all classics. "Breathe Out", "Goldtooth" and "So Few" are the best tracks on this CD, along with "Grinning", "The Sick" and "I, Diablo". I recommend this for people like me who don't necessary like nu metal, but they like the stuff by artists such as Helmet, Vision Of Disorder, Earth Crisis, Will Haven and Killswitch Engage. I guarantee that you will not waste a minute of your time. Calling this "nu metal" would be an insult. This is just straight forward metal.
another masterpiece.......2004-12-10
ignore klauscore as he listens to limp bizkit and kid rock so his opinion means jack. oh and btw ryan, korn is good, but nothingface is 10x better than korn and killswitch engage combined are. so you might as well live with that fact, step out of your dream world and listen to some nothingface, but this time, with an open mind.
Nothingface might be gone but their legacy lives .......2004-07-25
What happens in America when a band proves time and time again they are the top of their class? Fame? Fortune? Respect? Unfortunatly not, what's more likely to happen is that they will be screwed over by their label, ignored for bands with 1/1000000 of their talent and then finally when it seems like their about to get a break, get dropped from their tour and label and have to quit because they just can't stand it anymore. In case you haven't figured it out, I'm talking about Nothingface. Who called it quits about a month ago. Enough of my b^tching about the American music scene though and onto the review.
Everday Atrocity is one of the only true gems produced in America and one of the most intense records ever. As far as this compares to the rest of the Nothingface catalog, I would say it's the best or shares that title with Skeletons. Somewhat lackluster production takes away from this a bit but not in a major way. Matt Holt sings/screams with an intensity somewhat lacking on later efforts and this is undoubtably his best performance ever. The guitars are nothing exceptional which is somewhat expected of this kind of straight forward music. You won't hear a million solos per minute or a hundred different genres crammed into a 40 minute song but they definitly know how to write riffs that add to the intensity of the album. The rhythem section holds very well in that somehow they make the insane intensity of this album catchy. If you like Slipknot, Fear Factory, Killswitch Engage, Shadows Fall, Strapping Young Lad, God Forbid or any of the other bands that blend hardcore with singing vocals then you owe it to yourself to check out this album. If you haven't already, I recommend checking out the bands mentioned above in addition to this.
R.I.P. Nothingface

Debut album re-invents heavy music........2007-04-12
First off, let me say that I love all types of heavy music and have a very extensive collection. That said, Nothingface is my favorite band without question. They have a unique sound, the best extreme rock vocalist in Matt Holt, and killer songwriting abilities.
Pacifier is not their best album. I think it is their weakest overall, but that makes it better than 90% of the other bands out there. The major thing that is lacking is the production on this album. On their subsequent albums, you'll notice a huge difference in sound quality.
This one sounds very raw, but for most of the album, that is a good thing. It has a very in your face, live sound to it. If you are just getting into Nothingface, I suggest starting at the beginning or get all four discs at once.
WARNING: This Beats The Sh*t Out Of You!.......2005-05-02
I was lucky to get a 10 dollar discount on this, because this was 18 bucks! Anyways, this album is a classic. "One Thing", the opener, is the perfect opener to this epic. "Pacifier" is a brutal track as well that pummels you down, and "Defaced" has some great guitar work to it. "Perfect Person" and "Undercut" beat you down and make you suffer, in a good way. This band has been labeled as a "nu metal" band. Well, this disc is in the vein of Korn's self-titled debut, but it is enhanced with more memorable guitar riffs. Nothingface isn't exactly nu metal, though. They are just straight-in-your-face metal that delivers. It sucks that they split, since I have never seen these guys in concert. :'( Oh well.
Even if you hate nu metal, you should give this a try.
great cd.......2004-12-05
nevermind crazyarthur as he's a moron and likes backstreet boys. buy this cd, you will not regret it.
Nothingface=nothing else compares.......2003-07-21
I never really heard of Nothingface before. I heard the song "Sick" a couple of times and one day I decided to buy a Nothingface album. I ended up buying Pacifier. I loved the music but it took me awhile to catch on to singer Matt Holts brillant lyrics. The songs, "Undercut" my personal favorite, and "Hitch" very catchy riffs, and "Pacifier" all around masterpiece! Matt Holt can sing, scream, and write excellant lyrics. Tom (guitar) and Bill (Bass) are just excellant musicians. Chris the drummer on this album did a great job as well. But I suggest buying Skeletons first! But this one is a must. And when it comes to this album, I only disagree with one of Holt's lyrics "Take my saviour, take my pacifier." I need my Pacifier!
A good debut album.......2002-05-11
This album is good but it could of been better. It could of used better production. But its still cool. Nothingface is my favorite band. But this is not my favorite album. I suggest buying "VIOLENCE" or "EVERYDAY ATROCITY" first, then get this.

Voivod's Nothingface........2007-05-23
This is Voivod's best work. Their more recent work seems a little all the same sounding, but back when Nothingface was released they were tight! I highly recommend buying this album! Dimension Hatross is also their second best and well worth getting as well. So keep those two titles in mind when choosing which album to buy. NOTHINGFACE!
As soon as I get my next check I'm gonna order it again.
I hope there is a reasonable one available like there is now in a month. Wait. I change my review. This album is no good. Don't buy it!!! (lol)
Greatest prog metal album ever.......2007-03-18
Still Life? Images and Words? Remedy Lane? no it's Nothingface. Anyway that's my belief and I'm sticking to it. This album however is not thrash metal. I maintain this is prog metal. My idea of prog thrash is Coroner. Also I can here a slight Robert Fripp influence in Piggy's guitar but it's not overwhelming. This is quite simply the most important album for rock guitar since Larks Tounges in Aspic. So what does it sound like?. Robotic, sometimes dischordant but always beautifully structured within the song. The guitar is also very high in riffing which i love and the rhythm section is both competent and original and powerful and there's no cookie monster vocals from snake and I better stop because I think I need to clean myself.Best Album of the 80's. End.
Pure brilliance........2006-11-17
Everything about this album shows a band full of great musicians with brilliant ideas - who nail every single one of those ideas.
Even the album itself is early computer graphics, and the first ones I can think of on a record album. They were all done by the drummer - and they are absolutely, totally perfect for the music.
According to Amazon, the only copies of this album for sale are used - how can that be??? This is the best of Voivod's entire catalog...ah, well. It can't remain like this for too long.
Oh, and a special circle of heck is reserved for musicians that take other bands' song names and name their bands after them. Nothingface, Godsmack, Machinehead - I'm looking in your direction.
the best metal band nobody ever knew about..........2006-08-05
I bought this on a cassette tape in '89 and wore it out playing it. I remember going to see Voivod that same year as they were on tour with Soundgarden. I think they were kind of lost in the grunge hype--this is a recurring theme with this band that never really 'made' it commerically. Their music had a sophisitication to it and it fell on deaf ears in a music world that couldn't handle more than 3 chords at a time. I was into punk and thrash music, but when I discovered Voivod, it was like falling in love with a Philip K Dick novel; my teenage post-apocalyptic paranoid Reagan Era aesthetic totally adopted Voivod.
This album is deeply layered and highly nuanced. Although I love their cover of Astronomy Domine, I almost felt that they were trying to gain a credibility by quoting Pink Floyd and it seems almost out of synch with the rest of the sci-fi storytelling going on. I started listening to Voivod again last week and its been like almost 15 years but the music still sounds fresh!
singular.......2005-10-28
The references to groups like Rush, Pink Floyd, (Magma is another probable influence), etc. in other reviews here are certainly valid, but thankfully they're not necessary in order to dig this album. Thankfully for me, because "prog" is usually an insult in my vocabulary. Even when Voivod is covering Pink Floyd they sound like noone else and even within their catalog, this is truly a singular piece of work. The performances are as good as one could hope and the vision is fully formed.
(All that said, Killing Technology, Dimension Hatross and Angel Rat are also pretty decent.)

Nothingface is one of the few bands out there that have made a better record each time they have released a new CD. "Skeletons" is easily the bands strongest CD to date. Though their last CD "Violence" was a great album, "Skeletons" is a definite improvement. "Skeletons" shows more of a variety of skills from every member of the band. Nothingace seems to just get better with every release, which not many other bands can say these days.
Nothingface takes on the world........2007-04-13
For some reason, I didn't realize the brilliance of this album on first listen. It took a couple of times to get the full impact, and when I got it, it took hold of me and has risen to be another perfect piece of music in my mind. This set off endorphins in my brain that had never been touched by any other music. This release may be the most musically accessible album they have made (at least in part)but it also covers some of the heaviest topics of the time. Namely, displeasure with how the government is handling things in our country and overseas, as well as the catholic church (priests mollesting boys). It is loud, angry, but sometimes beautiful. And that is why it is so incredible.
Powerful and Emotional.......2007-04-09
If there is a band that certainly stands out amongst the other bands it is lumped up to, it is Nothingface. Sadly, they have been branded "nu-metal" due to their image and lyrical theme. I don't find that true at all. Nothingface is a band that, unlike a lot of nu-metal, cares about their music. They keep continuing to do this with their 4th album (and what was thought to be their last until they reunited after a quick disbanding), "Skeletons".
This is one of the most diverse groove metal albums I have ever heard. "Ether" is one of their slower type of songs (and possibly their most known single), while you have a rampage with "Here Comes The Butchers". It's well varied and is actually worth listening throughout. Matt Holt is an excellent and unique vocalist who can mix screaming and singing without sounding too prebuscent. The guitar riffs are ear catching and don't sound rehashed. It's just the excellent CD to break away from your current music scene.
If you are a fan of Pantera, Machine Head, Killswitch Engage and Fear Factory, I advise you check this band out.
Genious. .......2006-07-23
Nothingface are brilliant. I remember the first time I heard the song 'Ether.' That song drove me to buy this album. Ether is definetly the best song on this album, the lyrics explain it all. They are brilliant.
'we came to take control
we came to sell you freedom
we came to burn you down
we came to brainwash children
and its not our fault
its just your own new suicide
Where we belong
theres no one to hurt.
its someplace where we cant be felt
where we belong
its darker than space
a feeling that we all push down
so we cant be found'
Changed for the worse..........2005-11-07
I am just curious where the Nothingface I used to enjoy went. This album is so much different than their other stuff...and not good at that. This cd is boring. Violence was such a great album, it was heavy as all get out, the lyrics were ridiculously awesome and matched the title of the album. But what is this boring nonsense they released? I also want to ask...what is up with the stupid outfits and idiotic hair-does? Go back to looking nomral! Seriously, why did Nothingface feel the need to go from an excellent straightforward metal act to this want-to-be nu-metal garbage? Maybe if they would spend less time on looking like idiots and focus more on their music like they used to then this would have turned out better. I got into this band because they were NOT nu-metal. I was surprised that there was heavy music out there that had good lyrics, no stupid image gimmicks, that wasnt stupid nu-metal and not hardcore. They were something original...but it seems TVT thought they should change their awesome band into another Disturbed or *enter bulls*$#&$ nu-metal band here* I will admit, "Here come the butchers" is the only great track on here, it sounds just like old Nothingface and naturally I thought this whole album was going to be like it...thus the reason I bought this crap. But please, for the love of god, do yourself a favor and pick up Violence or one of their other albums. I beg of you.

OMG this album is out of print!??! I have it on tape and need it on CD, i guess i will have to record it and master it myself. YES thats how good this album really is! Time changes that make your hair stand. Riffs that you can jam to for years to come. I have had this tape since 1989 and it is NEVER far from a tape deck of mine. If anyone finds this CD GET IT! and SHARE IT! voivod needs to remaster and re-release! PLEASE !!
Space metal with universal appeal.......2004-02-14
No one would ever have predicted back in 1984 that the band who stormed onto the scene with "War and Pain" would end up five years later dropping the twisted cybermetal of "Nothingface". Charting their musical progression through the median three albums, it seems obvious in retrospect, but despite the fully realized work that is "Dimension Hatross" it's "Nothingface" that is Voivod's true masterpiece.
"The Unknown Knows" and "Nothingface" jump out of the starting gates with a heavier direction than much of the album will maintain. Doubtless Voivod were breaking in fans of "Dimension Hatross" gently, as both songs follow in that general path. However, the third track, a cover of Pink Floyd's "Astronomy Domine", fully introduces the zoned out, trance-like dirge that will permeate the rest of the album. Frankly, this is one of the best cover versions I've ever heard, despite being ultra-faithful to the original (a process I usually detest). The drums in particular are absolutely fantastic - we're not talking double kick drum rolls or any other form of technical virtuosity, but the soft/loud buildups and the way Michel Langevin works around the melody is awe inspiring and makes this an utter pleasure to listen to.
Of the remaining funereal "ballads", "Missing Sequences" and "Into My Hypercube" are both astounding, whereas standout rockers include "Pre-Ignition" and "X-Ray Mirror". The lyrics all consist of paranoid, futuristic Kafka-meets-Orwell parables about loss of identity and invasion of privacy. For the most part they're fairly impenetrable, but the band have helpfully (?) provided abstract, impressionistic computer art for each song.
Although Voivod have a series of great albums that boast different approaches and succeed in conflicting manners, "Nothingface" is both the best and most accessible album they've released to date.
This just unbelievably rawks.......2003-04-08
I'd consider this one of the ultimate modern metal albums, period. Voivod's sound refined to its pinnacle. No one quite sounded like them, at all, to start with but this album really clinches them as a unique force in the heavier realms of popular music. It's like taking the intelligence and precision of Rush and injecting that into the aggro-fueled storm and drive of Stormtroopers of Death, and cloaking the result under the dark, brooding wings of Black Sabbath or Ministry, with a hint of the chaotic experimentalism of John Cage, Throbbing Gristle or Einstuerzende Neubauten thrown in for good measure. Frankly, I think their later work has mostly been a mistaken, meandering departure from the path they were blazing with this album. Hopefully they'll get back on track (though the one-track promo I've heard off their forthcoming self-titled new album doesn't leave me much hope - they've swapped out one of the most amazing drummers in the world for a former Metallica member, and drifted into the same "we're trying to sound more accessible and melodic" pasture that they were grazing in when they did "Angel Rat". Forget that stuff. Nothingface is THE Voivod album any metalhead MUST own.)
The most progressive band in all of metal.......2003-01-21
Now here's a band we should see at prog power, but might not; Voivod. Voivod is more progressive than Dream Theater, Symphony X, and all the Queensryche/Helloween clones that occupy the "prog metal" scene all together. Why you ask? Because for metal, they are TRULY progressive in all senses of the word. Taking their queues from King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Rush, Van Der Graaf Generator and mixing it with thrash punk metal, Voivod are a unique entity that takes their influences and sounds like something COMPLETELY NEW. One cannot hear a band these days that sounds alot like voivod, but elements of their genius can be faintly heard from bands like Dillinger Escape Plan, Meshuggah and even Opeth. Not that those bands are completely influenced by them, but many of the same musical concepts are used in those groups compositions. Voivod have a very unique musical basis, using odd chord progressions and timings to create a "spacey" effect that fits in with the sci fi concept that appears on all of their albums. This 1988 release, "Nothingface", stands as possibly their best album, it has the most balance between the earlier, more dissonant releases like "Dimension Hatross (probably a close second with this one) and later more atmospheric works like "Angel Rat". I dare say "Piggy" is one of the most underrated guitarists in metal, he doesn't have the chops of say; John Petrucci, but his creativity probably exceeds that of many higher rated guitarists (kind of like the fact that Frank Zappa is not as highly rated in guitar magazines as Eric Clapton). This is a worthy addition to any prog metallers collection.
If this is the future, please take me there immediately........2002-10-28
Technical, progressive, and original are all words that I would use to describe this album. Each musician has a great contribution to the sound of this wonderful masterpiece. Guitarist Piggy generously strings together jazzy sounding chords to the point where I start wondering how large one's chord vocabulary could possibly be. Blacky's bass tone is heavy without that annoying metallic "PANK" sound I hear with other such categorized bands. Snake is one of my favorite vocalists, due to his work on this album and on Angel Rat and The Outer Limits. He easily works within a tenor range, and inflects his voice in a manner which reminds me of some classic rock bands from the 70's. His harmonization on certain vocal lines is particularly notable, such as in "Astronomy Domine" and "Missing Sequences." Finally, Away gets way too crunk on his drumkit. It seems that with his style, he would only need 3 cymbals: a hi-hat and ride on which to count time, and a crash or some other such cymbal for accents. I particularly enjoy his antics on the aforementioned ride cymbal. This album is mixed very well and has a lot of neat little sound effects here and there which are very tastefully implemented. The mood on this cd is described as dark by some, but I honestly can't see that. To me, this music is very bouncy and happy. It is garaunteed that it will lift me out of a bad mood and get me jumping off the walls.

Nothingface member's side project.......2007-07-17
Although it is only five songs long and left me wanting much more, this was another awesome release from Bill Gaal, Matt Holt and company. The songs sound like stripped down Nothingface songs, more along the lines of heavy rock than the more extreme style they are known for. The songs are excellent, and although Matt Holt doesn't sing on all the songs, he adds his awesome voice to the closing track.
If you are a fan of Nothingface and can pick up this cd for a reasonable price (it can be hard to find now), then I would say BUY IT!

nothingface - changeman.......2002-05-22
The two obvious implications of nothingface's new album's title are as appropriate as irritating: yes, it' s about entering new territory and no, it's not hinted at some historic arcade game, no `return-of-the-80s' or `attack-of-the-pixel' brandnew-you're-retro stuff this time.
With "changeman", nothingface a.k.a. Eric Schneider releases his first vocal album. An overdue enterprise if you ask hearers who have previously noticed that certain catchyesque pop note on his former productions: adding vocals would anyway have been the next logical step. In "Wir marschieren" - a slightly kraftwerkian minipop, nothingface takes that step. Continuing along the tracks with comfortably straight deep house and fake soul, naturally not omitting the typical (but not usual) nothingfacial miniatures, "changeman" perfectly exercises the splits between dancefloor compatibility and hippie-burlesque.
Eric Schneider is the secret outsider of the `Sound of Cologne'. Following his first release on Joerg Burger's legendary label Eat Raw, he passed some very credible stations, namely EMI's re-animated/then-re-buried guinea pig Harvest and small-but-smart German label Treibstoff. This year he debuted on Eleganz with the vinyl-only release of "ultraboutique"-LP.
Vocal support comes from Brit Leisler a.k.a. duft and Chris Garland a.k.a. the nightdoctor who contribute both the calculated coolness (duft) and the explosive soul-weirdness (the nightdoctor) that "changeman" draws its idiosyncratic charm from. discourse not permitted - so love it or leave it!
THIS IS NOT NOTHINGFACE.......2002-05-21
Thit cd IS NOT the kick-butt metal band Nothingface. This is some forein techno/dance band that [stinks]. I was expecting a killer metal album but instead I got [junk]. But maybe its not [junk], its just not what you want. This other "nothinface" band could be good.... at dance music, I don't know.
