Customer Reviews:
from Solo Piano Publications.......2004-05-24
"Skyline Firedance" is my all-time favorite David Lanz recording. A double-album, one CD contains ten piano solos, and the second CD is contains the same pieces with full orchestration. Many of these songs are much more up-tempo than David's previous and later releases, and several are among his very best. Titles include "Dark Horse," "Dancing on the (Berlin) Wall," and "Vesuvius." It also includes "The Crane," which David composed for the 1990 Goodwill Games in Seattle, and his beloved arrangement of "Nights In White Satin." Most of these songs are also in "The David Lanz Collection" book of piano solos - my favorite book for teaching my students.
David Lanz at his Finest.......2003-07-19
David Lanz's "Skyline Firedance" double CD is an excellent purchase. Lanz is accompanied by the IFS Philharmonic Orchestra of Munich on the first disc, and goes solo with his piano on the second.
The music couldn't really be more different than his previous releases. There is tremendous energy in the music, and Lanz combines melodic beauty with amazing piano technique..... a rare combination indeed. It says something about Lanz's talent that his solo-piano version of the tracks played by an orchestra on disc 1 more than hold their own. Indeed, many might argue the solo piano disc 2 surpasses the first disc.
There are many highlights on this CD. One can only sit back and admire Lanz's technique on the opening track "Vesuvius". What energy here! "Dark Horse" is another favourite, plus Track 7 "Prelude to the Dance". I'm not quite sure about "Nights in White Satin"- there's no disputing it's beautifully played, but it seems a little out of place here. The disc closes with a gorgeous track entitled "The Crane". This is peaceful and soothing.
Super value for money, this disc is highly recommended.
Artist Best-Of, Orchestrated.......2002-02-05
This album qualifies as one of Lanz's "Best Of." It contains both fully orchestrated and solo works, and they are both absolutely fantastic. After hearing the full orchestra, one might wonder how the solo piano could hope to compare, and it does with amazement. Lanz is truly gifted. I would like to see more orchestrated works from this artist, they are just as superb as his solo enchantments.
David Lanz At His Best........2001-06-26
Very rich in music, fully orchestrated and full of energy. I highly recommend this album for everyone who loves New Age music and to all those who like Classical Music. David took it to another level on this one. I myself like New Age artists that incorporate Orchestra to their music and that is why I loved this album. If you like this album, I recommend you to explore Yanni, Secret Garden, Giovanni and Bernward Koch.
Quintessential David Lanz.......2001-02-25
To start off, if you got here by mistake, and are wondering who the heck this David Lanz guy is, BUY THIS ALBUM, because if you have any spirit whatsoever, it will practically blow your mind. This album, to me, is probably the album that shows the entirety of David Lanz's career over any other. While it is his most energetic solo album, and probably most energetic overall, he combines fiery pieces like "Vesuvius" and "Firedance" with more mellow ones such as "the Crane," as well as solo and orchestral versions of each song, to create a musical masterpiece. I have only played piano for a little over a year and a half, and this album at the moment has run full circle for me; the first piece of his that I played was "Firedance" and the latest one is "the Crane." Even though I have heard this album many times, I pick up new elements seemingly every time I listen to it. Also, I would recommend David Lanz' work in general to pianists of any level. I consider his pieces much like learning chess: easy to learn, hard to master. Most or all of them have a "hook," or a "chorus" to them, some pattern that he returns to several times, yet he is so good at just changing that pattern slightly, adding a chord here or transposing it into a different key, that it becomes difficult to master his songs. Also, while these songs, to an untrained ear or to someone who isn't listening for it, seem to be relatively simple, it is only when you start playing them that you realize Lanz' true piano-playing talent. He has extreme control over the dynamics of his hands- such that at times you don't hear half the notes in the left hand unless you listening to them, and he has some of the hardest, quickest patterns for the right hand on this album that I have ever played. "Dark Horse," one of my favorites, is a perfect example. It is extremely quick and played much of the time in quarter-note triplets (which Lanz loves composing in), to a point where I can barely play maybe an eighth of the song at the tempo he plays it. David Lanz is probably one of the best contemporary pianists, and while it's a shame he didn't win the Best New Age Grammy for "East of the Moon" this year, I consider it an atrocity that this album, or any song from this album, wasn't nominated for a Grammy when it came out eleven years ago.

Customer Reviews:
Empire Brass + FireDance = Washed Up?.......2002-11-11
I must say, this is probably the most disappointing album released thus far by that group called the Empire Brass. The performances are excellent as usual, but lacking life, substance. The music selection is awkward and the overall album doesn't flow well, it sounds more like a collection from different periods in the group's history than their latest album. The arrangements also seem to be lacking.
It opens with Bolero, which was originally an orchestral piece designed to explore the different timbres of woodwinds, brass, and strings. This sad reduction may be good for classical background music, but does not reflect the original idea of the work. Other songs on here rely heavily on percussive or electronic help to get the unique sound that the Empire "Brass" has recently become known for.
This is an interesting album, with some definately different ideas on some classics. I do not believe it fits under the title "Class Brass" however. Buy this for a new look at brass arrangements, but not for a good example of brass quintet music in the 20th century.

Unique.......2001-02-05
The first time I heard a brass quintet was one the radio when they played The Bartered Bride. I knew right then I had to get a CD. After laboring for quite a while trying to choose one I finally decided on this CD, (I couldn't resist the surround sound). I was glad when I got to listen to this... such a variety of styles and arrangements; I really enjoyed all these tracks. It is refreshing to hear old tunes done a different way and hear ones that I have never heard. One of my favorites was Rondo alla turca; the technical feat of hearing that low instrument belt out that racing melody was magnifiscent. The dramatic power of Romanza and Jupiter really appealed to me. Also, the use of percussion really put some of these traditional pieces into different perspectives - which is good because otherwise to me they would just be another arrangement of pieces I've already heard. I love the quality of this recording - to turn it up really loud and just listen to the echoes when the last chord is done sounding. Quite impressive!
Bravo!.......2000-01-12
In recent years, the Empire Brass have moved away from straight, traditional brass quintet transcriptions of pieces in many genres, including the mix of classical music chestnuts (Bolero, Jupiter, Pictures) and more unusual pieces (Bartok's pieces here, among many others) found on "Firedance". Instead, founder and only remaining original member Rolf Smedvig has gravitated towards arrangements that include heavy doses of percussion and occasionally other electronic and acoustic instruments. In "Firedance", they mix it up. Some of these transcriptions (the Albinoni trumpet and organ concerto, for instance), are quite traditional with no extra instrumentation and only light (if any) percussion accents, and would have fit in well on early EB albums, while others (the Beethoven, Dvorak's Slavonic Dances, the Bartoks, the Celtic jigs) are quite daring but always tasteful. The results may not please everybody, particularly traditional brass quintet fans, but I greatly admire the creativity and willingness to reach in new directions. The group's sound has much more range, now, emotional, dynamic, and in tone color, and I find the arrangements quite successful, breathing new life into old music. The playing, as always with Empire Brass, is superb.
This is getting embarassing!.......2000-01-05
Well....another flailing attempt to keep the Empire Brass afloat. Unfortunately, it's painfully clear that she's taking on water; alot of it! Rolf's sound has been deteriorating rapidly since his Grammy-nominated Haydn/Hummel album and now sounds almost like a percussion instrument instead of a trumpet!
Bravo to the BU grads....you sound great. It's hard to believe that just 10 years ago, you were all BU students and now you ARE the Empire Brass and Rolf is very obviously simply along for the ride.
In my opinion, the last three Empire Brass albums are complete garbage. They compromise not only the integrity of the original Class Brass CD, but the integrity of the Telarc label as a whole.
If you're a serious brass music enthusiast, I suggest looking into the London Brass or the Center City Brass Quintet recordings.
Pity!
Brass lovers rejoice--more from the world's finest quintet........1999-08-13
Another grand installment from Rolf Smedvig (trumpet) and EB. Starting off with a fine rendition of Ravel's Bolero, these always consummate musicians flawlessly dash off twenty-two tracks of tunes from the familiar to the obscure. A sumptuous rendition of Holst's Jupiter from The Planets is followed by the eerie and awesome Old Castle from Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition. Dvorak's Slavonic Dances are then thoughtfully peppered around Mozart, Debussy, and some riveting Bernstein. The big surprises are Bartok's rollicking Bagpipe Music and Mendez's buoyant Romanza. Also check out the spirited Celtic Jigs. As always, the tracks are chosen with care. Newcomers to EB should first purchase the disc titled "Empire Brass" which features Bernstein and Gershwin (a 5++ star). This first effort remains their best, and I don't think anyone would deny it's power and grace. I gladly traveled to Portsmouth, New Hampshire to hear these fellows play and I now own six of their CD's. Rolf Smedvig may be the best living trumpet player (sorry Wynton). Nevertheless, I sometimes wish he would yield more solo playtime to Ken Amis (tuba), Greg Miller (horn) and Mark Hetzler (trombone) who has picked up nicely on Firedance for the missing Scott Hartman--a tough act to follow. You will play this music again and again. It is serious brass!

Ancient Songs in the Celtic Sphere........2006-07-25
Very rarely is one able to find songs that both date back to old times in Celtic and Northern European life and new songs that connect the ancient to the modern. But this album does just that.
The songs are good for celebrating the entire Celtic season of Samhain, and are good for both Christian and pagan purposes. Though the songs are all good, the best ones are probably tracks 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, and 9.
Song one is about celebrating life in the midst of death, an old Celtic way of viewing the New Year. The second song is a mix of ways of celebrating Yule; it begins with a Medieval Gregorian chant, then moves onto an older Celtic view of Yule (using the same mellody). Track four is about the year being renewed by the beginning of winter; track five is an old (Northumbrian?) Medieval English song sung in pubs on cold nights. Song seven is the Greensleeves mellody with more traditional/ancient words. And song nine is an old Scottish-Christian tune about the Christ Child.
This is a wonderful collection of songs to either add some mystery (and older ways) to your Christmas holiday or to celebrate Christmas and/or the Winter Solstice.
Perfect Pagan Solstice Music.......2006-06-17
I adore this album for Solstice-time. "Yule is Come" is such a happy, upbeat song, that I've used in ritual since hearing it. "Gaia's Lullaby" is one of the most moving songs I've ever heard and makes me tear up. "Bring Us Good Ale" is hilarious and for some reason makes me think of Hobbits..."Dance to Your Shadow" will make you do just that.
Buy it, love it, and put it on constant repeat right after Samhain!
Firedance - a warming winter brew.......2006-04-14
I loved this music! I've always been really into Yule, but for years I've been looking for music that celebrates the season, not the Christian holiday. This is a lovely collection of songs, some traditional, some original, that remind us what Yule is all about: joy, light, music, good friends and warming celebrations during the darkest time of the year.
