better than zeppelin, the stones and humble pie. .......2007-03-18
that this band is still overlooked is a downright rotten disgrace. this is the 2nd best rock and roll album ever recorded, right behind the band's debut. in the world of rock and roll, there is no one better.
Under-rated classic rock.......2007-01-18
I bought "Coliseum Rock" when I was about 14, and I played it until it was useless. I looked for years to buy it on CD, and had no luck until recently, and if you could wear out a disc, I'd do it again! This is a must have for any rock fan. STARZ was so under rated then, and still is. This CD and their "Violation" CD's are awesome, and they never get 'old'.
Starz Last Studio Shot.......2005-10-29
After three albums which barely registered on the charts, Starz regrouped, added a new bassist and guitarist, and pulled out the metal stops for "Coliseum Rock". Unfortunately, as so often happens when you tamper with the chemistry of a group, the slightly changed sound of the band causes it to sound a tad generic. The "Starz Sound" is not quite there. What is here are some classic songs (So Young, So Bad", "Outfit", "It's a Riot", and what may be their best song, "Last Night I Wrote a Letter") mixed in with some cuts that are a cut below the standard. Starz called quits after this one, and it's a shame. Underappreciated, they remain the 70's best unknown hard rock band.
Starz - An obscure rock band if ever there was one.......2005-06-15
Starz had 4 studio albums back in the late 1970's and then one rehashed release ("Requiem") of some live and unreleased tunes in 1995. Their debut "Starz" (1976) started off great with songs like "Detroit Girls", "Live Wire", and "Fallen Angel". They continued their brilliance with "Violator (1977). "Coliseum Rock" (1978) was the band's 3rd and last great release ("Attention Shoppers" was just plain bad). Michael Lee Smith's vocals never sounded better than here. Ritchie Ranno simply shredded on guitar. And, Joe X Dube was amazing on drums. This album rocks steady for the most part with a few rock ballads thrown in for good measure. This is easily my favorite Starz album... with great rock songs like "Take Me", "No Regrets", "It's A Riot", "Where Will It End", and the instrumental guitar (and feedback) song "Coliseum Rock". Perhaps their biggest hit here was "So Young, So Bad" - more of a pop song, though still a good tune, probably my least favorite on the album. Bad management or producer? No promotion? No idea why Starz didn't fare better... they deserved it. The 2 bonus tracks are taken from "Requiem" ("Vidi OD" and the ballad "You Called His Name") are absolutely worthless and deemed skippable. Starz peaked with "Coliseum Rock"... if you had to buy one of theirs - this is it - it still rocks 25+ years later! The album cover artwork is the best of their 4 original releases. Thank you Ryko for re-releasing these lost albums with remastered sound. Classic 70's rock & roll... great album.
Fantastic.......2005-04-03
A blast from the past! This is one group I listened to in the late 70's and into the 80's a lot. Thank goodness this CD is now available, my album is virtually worn out. The song Coliseum Rock, followed by It's A Riot, are meant to be played loud...very loud! Some of the songs are for the teenage crowd (as I once was) and do now sound juvenile to me, but hey, who wasn't young once. Songs like Where Will It End, Last Night I Wrote A Letter and No Regrets will definitely rock you. If your are familiar with this album, then you know what I mean, and if your not familiar with this album and you are looking for some amazing rock, get this CD!!

A number of unique and interesting moments distinguish Volume 13 of the Dick's Picks series, which offers a complete Nassau Coliseum performance from May of 1981. The long and strong 11-song first set picks up steam at the end with the always welcome "Big Railroad Blues," a daring "Let It Grow," and a fiery "Deal." Disc two is where the real fun begins, featuring a powerful reading of "High Time" followed by the "Sailor"/"Saint" combo, while disc three boasts an absolutely wild "Caution/Spanish Jam" following "He's Gone." As an added bonus on the second disc, check out the hidden "Scarlet"/Fire" from another (unnamed) show, which reaches some pretty high peaks during the transition and powers along for 35 minutes of action! --Marc Greilsamer
Customer Reviews:
Very Nice Show.......2003-07-02
I quite enjoy this show. Brent Mydland's keyboards are prominent in the mix. He is a much more appropriate and productive player for this band than Keith Godcheaux had been for 7 or so years, and he helps to keep this set moving along nicely.
The song choices are nice, the peformances good, the fidelity is good if not definitive. The jamming on discs 2 and 3 is pretty good - again, Mydland helps to keep things moving. On the whole a very good night for the Grateful Dead and for the audience.
Great He's gone and fun speeded up version of GDTRFB.......2003-06-15
YES!!
But buy DP 5 first
The List Price $20.97 is a lie!.......2002-12-31
The list price shown on this page says .... The price over at the Grateful Dead store is only $.... Save yourself a ... and go directly to the source.
However if you choose to use Amazon, I would give this album 5 stars, it rocks like most of the Dicks Picks Collection.
A good early eighties show.......2002-08-21
This is a popular tape that's been circulated since... 1981. Ha! It's a good show with some unusual transitions and breakdowns that lend to its longevity as a favorite tape. Also, the entire performance has an ethereal quality to it... that is... for lack of a better word... enchanting. Maybe this is why it's such a popular tape? So now it's officially on CD. Brent's keyboards are a bit too forward in the mix, but overall, these CDs beat listening to old hissy cassettes. Disk 2 has a bonus Scarlet/Fire which lasts 30 minutes and, in my opinion, is OK but nothing special.
Whatta Show!.......2002-03-21
The review of this show in the Grateful Dead Compendium states that it is one of the strongest shows of the Dead's career. I attended the previous night, 5/5/81, and that was a great show. But this one--5/6/81--is awesome. Fully deserving of 5 stars in my opinion. A must have.

The Greatest Post-Hiatus PHiSH Show.......2005-02-28
OK, ladies and gentlemen, here's the deal with this recording: when PHiSH discontinued their Live Phish CD Series of archival releases, they did so at the same time as they began offering soundboard recordings of every post-hiatus show they played, as they played them. They chose to release just THREE of these shows onto CD - the only live Phish CD's released since the discontinuation of the series. With a band like Phish, whose shows vary greatly each and every time, the choice of which shows to release is not one made lightly - THIS SHOW WAS PUT OUT ON CD INSTEAD OF OTHERS FOR A REASON!
This is truly Phish's best show post-hiatus - I was THERE! The first "Destiny Unbound" since 1991, "David Bowie" and "Harry Hood" in the same show, a first-set-yet-still-un-believable "Bathtub Gin" (heard the 7/29/98 version from the filler on Live Phish 17? This is on par with that...), and a 30 minute "Tweezer" of epic proportions (that NEVER degenerates to feedback or dissonance and is a perfect example of Phish's improvisational genious!) to open the second set that segues into the first "Soul Shakedown Party" (Bob Marley) in years!
In addition to all of those epic jams, a few short-but-sweet songs were played as well, like "Sleep" and "Horn," and also the ever-rockin' "Birds of a Feather." The encore was beautifully played, as well: "Contact," "Mexican Cousin," "Tweezer Reprise."
I've seen 14 shows, all post-hiatus, and this is the best I've ever heard!

This rocks real hard! .......2006-01-08
This is a great album....actually almost an EP length disc of hard, Motorhead-ish hardcore. This never once strays into 'Metal-Core' territory, instead drawing upon pure, furious high octane riffs and screamed vocals recalling 'Ace of Spades' or 'Overkill' era Motorhead. Awesome!!

feisty punk with some sludge thrown in.......2005-01-27
while Coliseum is a louisville band, they don't fit the mold of louisville's well-known hardcore/punk history. many of the bands to have come out of the area have shared members, and Coliseum is no exception, with Black Cross' ryan patterson taking guitar and vocal duties here. his delivery is unpolished and unrelenting, as he barks his social commentary into the microphone with as much conviction as anyone could ask for. melodious he is not, but his gruff voice will stick in your head nonetheless.
musically, Coliseum forges a dark path as well. they do not have a hint of the sugary hooks that so many bands today rely on to keep listeners' attention. these songs are generally straightforward, banged out with almost no time to switch gears into a breakdown, save for a couple "kickstart my heart" guitar parts that fit in amazingly well. the guitars and bass have an almost, but not quite fuzzed-out feel that reminds me somewhat of AmRep's golden years. comparisons to Black Flag mixed with Motorhead have been made, and they are appropriate. to me, the closest thing to Coliseum is the latest offering from portland's From Ashes Rise, entitled "nightmares", although FAR's vocals aren't as deep.
strongly recommended for fans of 80's skaterock. heavy, but still "punk". thoughtful, but still down to earth. 5 stars for blistering, unapologetic punk played by adults, for adults.
ps-there is also a forthcoming ep entitled "goddamage", that i'm sure will blow me away as well.

Its loud. It has two Danzig covers. It rocks. These bands are a very (VERY) welcome breath of fresh air considering the scenes they come from. Other bands need to take note.
yes.......2006-02-05
a great intro to both bands if you haven't heard them and a great little thing for anyone who likes them already. and an ultra bonus for kids who wish danzig was their dad. i'm into it. why can't alll hardcore bands do cool things like this? i myself hadn't heard too much of these particular bands, just their other bands (black cross, national acrobat, converge, etc) but i like this a lot. i kinda wished i had it on vinyl but whatever, it's great no matter the format.

Album Description
Louisville's COLISEUM detonate thirteen blasts of high-impact hardcore on their Relapse debut No Salvation. Melding the best elements of hardcore, punk, and rock with the urgency and desperation of the most vital hardcore forefathers, COLISEUM makes its formidable presence known. Unrelenting in intensity and unapologetic in its reaction to our modern day dystopia; No Salvation bleeds, sweats, and cries COLISEUM's passion, power, and diy principles.
