5 out of 5 stars thrones own.......2006-05-09

Despite being a compilation this sounds almost like an album. I say 'almost' because what Joe Preston does transcends anything in your crappy record collection, and will make you feel dumb for liking any of the other junk you used to be into. It doesn't make any sense to me why he'd be in a dungeons & dragons band such as High on Fire right now, when he could be at home creating real wizard stuff like this.

5 out of 5 stars Transistor Transducer.......2005-06-21

The indie metal label, Southern Lord Records, can always be counted on to deliver the rarest of heavy goodies. Be it newer bands like SUNN O))) and Goatsnake, or remastering old behemoth stoner records of legendary doomsters, Saint Vitus, and The Obsessed, you can always count on something extraordinary, and usually offered in limited pressings of colored vinyl. The double clear vinyl version of The Hidden Hand's "Mother, Teacher, Destroyer" they released is above and beyond. I've gotten quite a bit of S.L. stuff over the years and have never once felt like I came up short.

S.L. has recently made me particularly happy with two such remasterings. One, a double vinyl offering of Dylan Carlson's earlier Earth recordings, "Legacy of Dissolution," pressed in green swirly wax, liner notes, and one of the sweetest gatefold covers I've ever seen, which I end up staring into...usually around midnight when this gets played:) Yes, it is just that good.

The other is this odds n' ends cd collection of hard to find/previously unreleased Thrones material, sardonically titled, "Day Late, Dollar Short." Note the cover photo, and Preston's recurring theme of white bunnies(as with the two original ep vinyl covers of what later merged as the "Sperm Whale" disc).

Thrones is a one man band, Joe Preston(recently w/High on Fire) who got his start with the seminal, ambient/drone band, Earth, on their "Extra Capsular Extraction" ep in the early 90s. Joe went on to play bass for the even more prominent and influential Melvins(when I first met him)and later, ventured off into solo land.

This disc has nineteen rarities, some I remember from the times I've seen Thrones live, a few from Thrones 45s that I heard over the years, dubbed tape recordings, etc, so it's good to hear quality recordings of The Suckling, Senex, Valley of the Thrones, The Walk, Piano Handjob, and many others.

Thrones is definitely a live experience, but the recordings can take you to a completely weird place too. Preston's recordings often defy classification; dark, bizarre suggestions of something frighteningly introverted, alien and otherworldly.
Yet at times, much like the Earth material, it's oddly peaceful, tranquil. Something may strike you as a bit silly sounding, then you realize it's downright spooky. No one does it quite like Thrones.
Equally recommended is Thrones' "Alraune"(still my favorite one), "Sperm Whale," and his Melvins/Kiss parody solo record. Hands first flower...indeed.

5 out of 5 stars Joe's Spring Cleaning .......2005-06-07

A collection of Thrones tracks from singles and compilations dating as far back as 1994 and a few unreleased songs from as recent as 2001. As far as I know, this CD has everything Thrones have ever done that isn't on the two previous CD albums. This is great news for people like me: I bought my first CD player in 1988 and never looked back. I stopped buying vinyl almost completely, ergo I never bothered to pick up any of the many Thrones singles. All I've had up to now is Alraune and Sperm Whale on CD. And the Punk In My Vitamins comp. Oh, and an mp3 I downloaded (legally!) from KRS' website or somesuch. As is typical of Thrones, it's a mixed bag. Several straight ahead (relatively speaking, that is) heavy songs, a few experimental songs, and some highly unlikely yet rad covers. Most of it's great. Well concieved, well performed, and good listening. Joe is a God of Thunder and a true Master of Drum Machine Programming. However, not every song can be a winner. Joe has a penchant for trying his hand at ambient and other such mellow shenanigans, and I'm sorry to say none of those songs has ever really tickled my fancy. But a few clunkers can't put a dent in this collection. While I would have preferred a new Thrones album, this is just as good. Joe's currently busy being the bassist in High On Fire, and he's on their current album, Blessed Black Wings. Check it out.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliance!.......2005-06-01

For consisting of one member, THRONES sure are good. Maybe that is precisely why THRONES are so good. No peanut gallery to pander to. Seriously derranged and creative tunes await. Never has heavy sounded so gosh dern cuddly. Oh gosh...

3 out of 5 stars Perty Okay.......2000-05-11

I didn't like this at first, but it began to grow on me after awhile. At first it annoyed me because of the typical Ramones song structure (chorus, verse, repeat chorus ad nauseam) but as I gave it more listens I realized that the Queers were a tad more experimental in their own lowbrow-humor, volatile hardcore way in this early output by them. "We'd Have a Riot Doing Heroin," and "Love Me" are my two favorites...though the cover of MacArthur's Park is kinda neat, though a bit of novelty. I also thought the live broadcast at the end was rather redundant. The live broadcasts have roughly the same sound quality as the rest of the album and the songs are the same so it seems rather useless. Aside from that, this is okay, though I'd recommend the Queers later work for a better idea of the rest of the Queers' output.

4 out of 5 stars I love this band.......1998-12-25

If you saw the Queers in 1998 and, based on their performance, want to buy one of their albums, I'd recommend getting their new one instead. This is their older (and better, in my opinion) sound when they were less pop-punk. These songs have the fast-and-simpleness of Ramones songs paired with the aggression typical of great bands like Black Flag. My fave song is "Too Many Twinkies".

      Album Description

Here is the seventh and final reissue from THE QUEERS. "A Day Late..." collects thirty-four songs culled from old singles, EPs and compilation tracks. Straight from the mouth of Joe Queer himself: "It's really cool that all the old Queers songs have finally been compiled onto one release cause it's always been the way I hoped it would be. Of course that was back in '83, but things always did take a little longer than expected when the Queers were involved."

4 out of 5 stars "He's seven years old, and he's dying of old age....".......2005-07-19

I can't tell you how many laughs me and my pals used to get from these songs in high school. The lyrics are bizarre, demented - definitely not politically correct - but at all times a riot. You can just hear how much fun they were having in the studio. The music is raw punk, fueled by little talent and lots of beer.

For those who aren't familiar with the roots of the band, most of the tracks on this CD are from the Wimpy-era. Wimpy was the original "singer" with Joe on guitar and backing vocals. With Wimpy there is no pseduo-Beach Boys harmonies or whining about long lost loves. He is like your nasty, drunken uncle that stopped getting invites to family reunions after his conviction for statutory rape. This is not your little sister's punk rock.

There are an overwhelming amount of songs on here, all from various EPs and other sources, but unlike similar compilations with tons of material (See Screeching Weasel's Kill The Musicians) the disc melds together pretty well and the quality and "tone" of the songs remains pretty consistent. You won't often feel the need to skip past any particular song, though it would take an iron will to get through the whole disc in one sitting.

After the EP tracks, there is a live set which was played in studio at a local radio station. This is kind of an interesting chance to hear what the band was like live, though without an audience on hand there isn't quite the energy level inherent in most live recordings.

All old school punks without a stick in their posterior region will enjoy this disc.

          5 out of 5 stars PURE CLASSIC.......2001-07-04

THIS CD CONTAINS MOST OF THE EARLY,AND HARD TO FIND SINGLES FROM THE VERY EARLY 80'S. DEFINITELY DESERVES 5 STARS.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty good Queers Album.......2000-09-10

THis album is pretty good but they've had better albums. Still if you're a fan of the Queers I strongly urge you to buy this cd. If you're a new fan just get one of there newer albums like Punk Rock confidential it's great.
