One of more than a few great bands who never made it huge. This CD is amongst some of the best music recorded in the 80's. Not glam by any means.
Zebra's debut includes "As i Said Before", "Tell Me What You Want" and of course "Whos behind The Door". 3 of their best tracks along with the underappreciated "Walk Away" (my favorite here),"Slow Down" and "La La Song" which is a gem showing serious musicianship.
IMO one of the best if not THE best 3 piece bands ever (yes i know people like Rush more). Saw them live twice and lived up to the hype. Even now, they still kick serious as*..
A definate necessity for metal and rock fans alike..

Paul Watson explained excellently below why this is essential 80's rock (not metal!) but I'm just wondering why the same old 1989 CD hasn't been upgraded yet?

Yes, I'm a devout audiophile and a fan of remasters and this CD definitely needs one - this 1989 CD effort has lots of distortion (not the intentional kind), tape hiss, and a very sloppy bottom end (what little there is of it) which desperately needs upgrading. This honestly sounds like it was mastered to CD from a cassette!

This CD may actually sound fine to you but if it does, seek out a 1st-pressing vinyl copy. Then you can actually hear this album the way nature intended. The difference, as I like to say, is NOT subtle.

Just the sound of Zebra's music brings me back to those days when everything was possible and the world was ours for the picking. Growing up in New Orleans and having the opportunity to hear Zebra on a fairly regular basis really shaped my taste in music and hearing the lead-in of "As I Said Before" followed by the incredible "Who's Behind the Door" makes me just as cocky as I was back in the 80's. Their guitar work, lyrics, chording was just as heady as ever. What a rush it still causes!

One hit wonder.......2007-04-17

The single "Tell me what you want" is the only song worth mentioning by Zebra. It was featured on Ktel's "White hot master's of metal" in the mid 1980s. I purchased the album based on that song alone and was very dissapointed. If you haven't heard the one song, get it! Otherwise, forget it.

Zebra - New Orleans' Greatest Rockers!!.......2007-07-21

I, for one, am delighted that this special two-album-on-one-CD has been re-released. Sadly it wasn't remastered and suffers from that bane of the 80's hard rock scene - no bottom end. Oh well, I just ran it out of a CD player with bass expansion and fed it into my computer and burned the wave files as an audio CD.

Zebra's second release "No Tellin' Lies" (1984), like all their other releases, features some great riffs, licks, melodies and family friendly lyrics. 'Wait Until The Summer's Gone' is a guitar monster with a triple track guitar solo while 'Lullaby', which was written for John Lennon, is too beautiful with its Harrison-esque guitar solo.

The third album '3.V' (1986) is the most melodic of their releases but has a little too much synthesizer for me but not too much, I guess, since it is my fave of their studio catalog. "He's Making You The Fool" should have been a hit. "Time" is another Randy Jackson-penned classic. Randy Jackson's voice and guitar playing make him a one man synthesis of Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, while the rhythm section of Felix Hanemann on bass/keyboards and Guy Gelso are nothing but complimentary in their playing. Can you tell I like these guys?

After listening to this CD you'll understand what happens when you take Beatles/Badfinger-quality melodies and toss in some Page-inspired guitar licks. Plus Randy has a heck of a voice.

Maybe Zebra never made it really big because they lack a gimmick. No anthems celebrating sex and drugs, no gaudy, and now foolish looking in retrospect, makeup (did someone mention Motley Crue?). None of the band members have been arrested for DWI and vehicular homicide (read: Vince Neil), none of the members have OD'd, died and been revived (read: Nikki Sixx) and the band, who recently celebrated their thirty year anniversary, doesn't loathe each other to such a degree that each has his own tour bus (read: Motley Crue's "reunion" tour).

Given the price, this edition is a must have. Look at it this way: With the funds needed to purchase the CD, you could buy two Wendy's value meals. Me, I would rather eat a PBJ so I can stay home and listen to this CD again and again.

Love These Two-For's!.......2007-07-04

This one that features their 2nd and 3rd albums, and the price is nice, and it was smart to leave them at a low price, I can't see the average person taking a chance if this was 20 bucks, can you? And I can get the song again "You're Only Losing Your Heart" (on 3.V), I used to have the cassette of 3.V, but it is long gone. I do have "In Black and White", and many of the songs here are on that one also, along with quite a few from the debut, but Zebra doesn't have a huge official catalog; so it's not really that difficult with the price of these to be a completist for the bands music in this case.

The band has always intrigued me in the style of the singer, his high pitched sound, along with a hard rock sound and melody also seems to be the late 70's meeting an early 80's alternative rock sound. It may not be an complex and progressive as a band like Rush, or Yes, but they seemed to have carved out a niche in the rock world over the years. You don't hear alot of people say that Zebra is one of their favorite bands, but perhaps they need to take another listen to this classic stuff and rethink it?

Zebra is a band to me that really I like just about every one of their songs. Probably the only song I don't like and skip each time is the "La-La Song", and it still bothers me that that one is on the greatest hits instead of "You're Only Losing Your Heart".

I suspect they recorded this album 17 years ago, because they have not lost anything !!!! This rocks better than early releases. If you liked the earlier albums, you will not be disappointed- buy it now. If you do not like their earlier albums, you must ask yourself- Why am I reading these Zebra posts? Am I a loser with nothing better to do???

I think Randy Jackson is one of the best guitarist's and vocalist's I have heard in a long time. This album as well as ALL of their previous releases are fantastic, true works of art.
Keep rockin' Randy!!!! Can't wait to hear the next one.

Missing the point.............2005-08-27

People reviewing this album on its musical merits alone are missing the point. Back in the mid 80's when so called 'hair bands' ruled radio these guys got very little air or MTV play, nor were they a 'hair band'. They always came on stage in t-shirts, jeans and sneakers like their fans. That notwithstanding these guys could have taken Atlantic's $$$, churned out some records, did the tour thing, and been on "Where Are They Now" or "I Love the 80's". Instead, they opted to remain true to what they wanted to do, play music.
I've seen them live and they are real people with a real passion to play for real people! If you like the other Zebra cd's you will like this one, as well. Not only are these guys great musicians, they are great people! I hope they rock until their in their 90's! See them live if you can. You won't be disappointed.

Ageless ZEBRA Rocks On With ZEBRA IV.......2005-03-02

To understand the beauty and joy after all these years until "IV" from a very happy fan growing up on LI who has followed this band from its early days, for what it's worth, check this out.....In the late 70's into the 80's, remember the better club bands to see on Long Island that included Stanton Anderson, Swift Kick, Llama, Broken Arrow, Thrills, Fanatics, The Lines, the great Good Rats, superb axeman Mark Hitt & Rat Race Choir and the blistering Twisted Sister that even came out from NYC (they really had some wild, kickin' shows at Mad Hatters in the Hamptons!!!!) Nothing in this lineup is close to being complete without having Zebra around. They along with the Good Rats and Rat Race Choir were the main unofficial "marquee" bands on the LI club circuit back then.

At a time when Led Zeppelin were still the primary gods of heavy metal rock, to have an extremely talented musician such as Randy Jackson whose vocal range and a Robert Plant/Geddy Lee -like falsetto soared perfectly with his flawless guitar and keyboard work along with a very talented duo of Felix Hanemann (bass and additional vocals) and Guy Gelso (drums)to come onto the LI club circuit (via La.) was a very welcome event. Of course, with this uniquely gifted talent, it was primarily expert covers of Zeppelin and a powerful stage show that got them noticed big time and once that happened, Zep influenced Zebra-styled originals were put into the mix. It was time for a record deal.

Zebra's debut was enormously successful. When it was released in '83, it was Atlantic Records fastest selling debut album ever. To us who know and have heard it--(over and over)--it is truely an overall classic -- "Who's Behind The Door" was being played on MTV and FM stations all the time, "Tell Me What You Want" was all over FM as well, classics "Take Your Fingers From My Hair", The La La Song", "One More Chance", "As I Said Before" were no-brainer fan favorites. It also didn't hurt that Zeppelin fans were starving for something like this since the mighty ones had broken up. Zebra sure had a dedicated, hardcore regional fan base but lacked a true national audience to propel them further as their magic really didn't catch on fast enough elsewhere on a national level.The combination of an ever changing music scene moving further into the 80's with punk and new wave started dominating the airwaves more and more along with Zebra's release of an overall uneven and ultimately unsuccessful follow-up album, "No Tellin' Lies" that virtually stifled any continued momentum (although "Bears", "Lullaby" and "Wait Until The Summer's Gone" were outstanding tracks off it). Additionally, it didn't help that critics who really didn't fully know or understand the band continued to knock Randy's vocal style and tried to dismiss him as over-glossing his Plant-like vocal gift and propel the band into nothing more than another "dime-a-dozen" 80's arena-rock Zeppelin clones that had a super stage performance and presence as well as a strong regional fan base following but nothing more sustaining artistically.

With the momentum stifled for a few years, the band came back strong with, in my opinion, one of the most underrated rock albums of the late 80's with 1986's "3V". It was clear that the band continued to mature greatly in both their song writing skills as well as their playing craft and recording prowess as they came away with a very engaging, polished effort with gems that included "Time", "Hard Livin' Without You", "Better Not Call" and "Your Mind's Open". However, with a combination of poor promotion, lack of radio exposure and the still unfavorable musical climate towards heavy metal rock at the time, "3V" got lost (soon the tide would start changing towards heavy metal again when the Guns N Roses masterpiece "Appetite For Destruction" was released in '87). Four years later, they released the fantastic "Zebra Live" that basically was a pure energetic live summary of their greatest hits in an attempt to capture an expanded audience. This again was a recording gem that virtually became unknown other than to their dedicated cult following. 1998's superb compilation "The Best Of Zebra - In Black & White" again went primarily only as far as a reminiscing fan classic.

Now comes "IV" in '03. Coming back after 13+ years since the live album release to record this CD is a feat in itself. It is another to come back with an outstanding, absolutely polished, powerful set of 11 songs that basically picks up their artistic progression from the "3V" days. Each song brings back the best of the best qualities that the band has displayed for over 25 years now. Better yet, between the obvious growing maturity the band has continued to possess to date, the catchy, energetic melodic power rock song craft they are famous for, the overall crisp musicianship and pristine digital technology sound recording of today's studio work on the CD, the long awaited "IV" is simply hailed as complete. Randy's vocals never sounded so clean with plenty of his enjoyable range. His guitar and keyboard playing are again flawless. Felix is superb on his bass and vocal contributions and Guy, who has been knocked by critics in the past for "over-drumming" is straight-forward with simplified Bonham-like thunderous and defined drum command to carry the trio home with a winner. The CD blasts off with seven superb power tracks in the Zebra style. A little twist that is a first for Zebra is mastered on track #8, "Waiting To Die", as in the mix is a very cool sax interlude throughout. The remaining three songs are slower-tempo introspective gems that ends with the smooth ballad "Why".

Though it was tough for this fan not to hear anything new for all these years up to "IV", I can simply say that this CD shines on with the superb AOR traditions this band continues to master through all these years and is most definitely worth the wait. Highly recommended !!

A Must For any Zebra Fan!!.......2005-08-27

Having been born and raised in New Orleans I've been listening to Zebra sice I was a teen (now 37). The cd is great from start to finish. It has unreleased tracks and alternate versions of some their best known songs. No way to be disappointed with the track list. The only oter song I would've squeezed on here would be a cover Zep's The Ocean. A truly outstanding best of.

fisrt heard of these guys in high school when radio was playing " lullaby," and its my favorite zebra song..."bears" and "who's behind the door ? " are also very good...one of the lesser known 80's bands that had gold records and a cult following...

ALL OF THIS FROM A 3-MAN BAND?.......2000-06-22

If you're a fan of 80's rock, this is a sure-fire winner to add to your collection. Zebra is a band that produces one of the most unique sounds you will ever hear- why they never made it to the top of the world of rock is a mystery to me. If you haven't heard their music, buy this CD and enjoy the ride. If you have heard of this band, then you already have their previous releases in your collection.

This group reminds me of Rush in many ways: A three-man band with a distinctive sound, songs with excellent lyrics, and musicians who are very talented. In listening to this CD, it still amazes me that this band is a trio. Equally amazing is their ability to produce the goods on stage as well, as I have seen them live many times.

Go ahead and add to your cart one of the most overlooked bands of its era.

THE BEST BAND NEVER TO MAKE THE BIGS.......2000-06-17

I'll state from the beginning that I am from Zebra's hometown and have been going to their concerts since they began playing. But I grew up a huge fan of the 80's mega band/metal sound and have also seen Van Halen, AC/DC, Def Leppard, Journey, Boston, Scorpions, Motley Crue, Judas Priest etc. in concert as well and own just about every CD from these bands.

If you are looking to hear some phenomenal music from that era and don't have Zebra in your collection, put it in your cart now. This band rocks and you will not be dissapointed. I rank them up there with my favorite band of all time, Van Halen. Yes, they're that good. One of the best bands of their era not to hit the big time. And yes, I will be going to their next local concert.

What's Black & White and Rock'n'Roll All Over?.......2000-06-03

This is the album to get from Zebra. They were the "unknown" band with the semi-hit, Who's Behind the Door. This three man band's lead guitarist/singer, Randy Jackson, has the vocal stylings of a hard rock Frankie Valli. He has a HIGH voice. But that's okay, because it works on Zebra's music.

The songs Tell Me What You Want, Hard Livin' Without You and Wait Until the Summer's Gone really rock. There's also some more good, melodic tunes in Bears, Lullaby and Who's Behind the Door. Also fun is Riverside and Better Not Call. The other tracks are fair.

Zebra is really one of the great, but relatively "unknown" bands of the 80's and 90's. They're right up there with Steelheart, Thunder, XYZ and Shooting Star. Give them a try, there's some good stuff in this release.

The music set the atmosphere for the movie.......2006-05-03

I always liked watching the movie. However I did not realize how much the soundtrack contributed until I realized it was available. Now you not only have the feel of the movie, but the soundtrack stands on its own for setting atmosphere!

A little about the movie:
Looks like an accident has happened at the North Pole (Ice station Zebra). The U.S. with Brittan, and the soviets are rushing to the rescue. Both are hampered by a snow storm. The U.S. has sent a submarine to the rescue. However it looks like something covert is afoot. The submarine is being packed with marines and an unscrupulous acting character. What is the secret? Will the sub even make it to the pole? And if so what will they find? Why are the soviets so keen in helping?

This is neither the throbbing mbaqanga of the townships nor the ponderous classicism of Kronos's African explorations. The Soweto String Quartet offer a light, poppy sound that mixes their cello, viola, and violins with a South African rhythm section and some touches of winds and brass. They move seamlessly between the scratchy, throbbing sound of Soweto (especially in some of the violin solos that really do grasp the wonder of the township fiddle sound) and the FM radio accessibility of Paul Simon (who they pay tribute to in a medley from Graceland). They are good players but they seem to have been advised to hide behind a slick production approach instead of showcasing their own skills. While there are pieces for just the quartet, they tend to be lighter, romantic works that lack much innovation. Some kwela or mbaqanga pieces with just the strings, using the cello for bass and the viola for punch, would have given the album a better sense of place than the incessant, if pleasant enough, bass-drum-keyboard backing band. Fans of Graceland or recent Mahlathini recordings should take the ride, because Zebra Crossing offers a different view of this popular music form. For those hoping for a radical departure: this is not your train. --Louis Gibson

Still My Favorite.......2003-03-11

On a recent trip to South Africa, I had the good fortune and privilege to hear the Soweto String Quartet in concert at the Spier Summer Arts Festival. I now have all their CDs (except for the one to be released very soon) and Zebra Crossing is still my favorite. For me it conveys the vibrancy, virtuosity and sheer joy that characterises this incredible group of musicians. Playing it always raises my spirits.

Zebra crossing is one of the CD's I keep playing. Like most of us (I guess) my collection of CD's keeps growing and growing and there are only few I play regularly. Zebra crossing is one of those. It was given to me by a local friend when I was based in Zimbabwe. Never heard of the Soweto String Quarted before. However, once I got "used" to their music I really started appreciating it. It's one of my favorits when I-am home alone, unwinding after a stressfull day with a single malt and a smoke. Not the african music that makes you dance, but great to either listen to or as "wallpaper" while reflecting.

Still Enjoy the CD After All These Years.......2001-01-18

I first heard the Soweto String Quartet when they came to Maputo, Mozambique to do a performance back in the early 90's. I wasn't too enthused about going at first, however, after their performance I was awestruck. I looked for something by them for years and purely by accident found this when I was on leave in South Africa. I've played it over and over and still get the same thrill as I did when I saw their live performance all those years ago. I've bought their other CDs since then, but this one has a special meaning for me.

I have never heard such a beautiful blend of classical, pop and African rhythms as on this album. But despite the fact that they are a string quartet, this is not a classical album. The intonation, many of the chord structures and a lot of the rhythms are uniquely African. "Bossa Baroque" is a particularly imaginative piece, and SSQ do a wonderful job of combining bossa rhythms with a Bach touch. This is one album that everyone should have a chance to listen to. Who would have thought that 18th century European instruments could beat with the pulse of Africa like they do here. Some of the pieces are contempory, some traditional. Paul Simon's 'Graceland' album is saluted in a medley, and Sting's "St. Agnes and the burning bed" is given the SSQ touch, and all are wonderful. Highly recommended.

Mixed feelings..........2000-03-15

I too bought the CD immediately after having seen the Dance Theatre of Harlem, in Seattle. I was disappointed at the "pop" nature of several songs though. I think they have compromised their brilliant roots at times with a trashy western pop sound. Maybe I just remember "Zebra Crossing" differently from the performance, or perhaps it was just enhanced perfectly by the dancers, but I don't recall the cheesy bass rifts and commonplace, predictable drum rhythms. Which is unfortunate -- their string playing is so beautiful and evocative, anything but predictable! They are strongest when left to their own devices. Worth buying if you get a good price.

Unusual, but one my favourite albums.......2002-08-04

I can understand that other Yello fans say that this CD is one of their worst. But still I like this album very much. The songs here are very different from other of Yello's albums. Boris Blank has mixed techno and jazz, sometimes he has succeded (How How, Night Train, Fat Cry, Tremendous Pain and Move Dance Be Born) and sometimes he has failed (Suite 904 and S.A.X.). The vocals are very good ("I'm walking down town keep lookin' around...") and sometimes they save the songs from being bad. Do It is only good because of the power in the vocals. The Premix (How How) is good because of the lyrics that are the same as in the original How How. The best songs on this album are the ones without the jazz - Night Train, Fat Cry and Tremendous Pain. SAX is bad (and I mean really bad) and I...I'm in Love is somewhat OK, thanks to the vocals. Suite 904 could have been better.

Yello releases another Pristine Caliber Album with "Zebra"........2000-12-22

Being a fan of pop/techno music all my life, Yello is the only group out of the crop that I never get tired of listening to. And "Zebra" is another example of their work that strays away from "mainstream pop". From the opening song "Suite 909" the acoustics Boris Blank uses are memorizing in every tune. He has a unique talent for succussfully mixing jazz & techno (as well as other genres) together as demonstrated in the the songs "S.A.X.", & "How, How". "Move, Dance, Be Born" is the highlight of the album. While techno has become generic in today's music era, Blank's music always bursts with orginality. "Night Train", "Tremendous Pain" and "Fat Cry" are the only tracks I found were weak. I can't seem to follow Deiter Meier's cryptic messages in his music. I'm more leniant to Blank's fasinating acoustics. Still, I strongly recommend this album for any Yello fan to add to his/her collection.

Yello goes techno!.......2000-08-12

After acquiring all of Yello's '80's albums that are readily available in the US, I got "Zebra" for Christmas 1995. My ears were freaking out! I couldn't believe how drastically different this album sounds compared to what you hear on "Essential" and everything else Yello has done in the past. But "Zebra" proves that when the musical times changed, so did Yello. Don't you just want to get up and shake your booty with "Move, Dance, Be Born" or "Do It" or even "S.A.X."?

This album came at a time when techno-house was being force fed to me. I bought this album simply because it was the new Yello album and found an arsenal of superior tunes to unleash on the tribal ravers. What is so refreshing is that Yello left their weird tendencies behind to make a masterful clever cool grove sound.
