4 out of 5 stars A collection of great instrumentals.......2006-08-10

Ian Anderson has always been known for his flute. What we have here is a flute player arranging and playing some very innovative flute.
The entire album is instrumental, so we miss out on Anderson's outstanding lyric writing talents.
Ian trades his lyrics in for some of the finest flute music you will ever want to hear.
There is not a bad song on the CD. The highlights for me include, In a Stone Circle, In the Grips of Stronger Stuff, and in defence of Faiths. These 3 compositions are not only outstanding but will stand the test of time, which in my mind is the only true test of music. You will never hear Ian Anderson compose anything more solid. The rest of the CD is basically elevator music with occasional highlights.
Ian plays the flute in his patented style and is in top form.
This is much better than its predecessor Walk into Light.
If you are a Jethro Tull fan this should interest you.

2 out of 5 stars Less Than Divine.......2006-07-28

For the record, I've been a huge fan of Jethro Tull since 1968 and a great admirer of Ian Anderson's recent work, such as "The Secret Language of Birds." Anderson is, in my estimation, one of the more significant composer/musicians of our day, and his post-Jethro Tull work has been quite wonderful.

Having said that, I am disappointed with his Twelve Dances with God. The music is pretty, in a generic way, but it lacks the compositional intricacy that is the hallmark of Anderson's work. There are few, if any, key modulations, which Anderson does so well in other works. The pieces are all instrumental - flute together with orchestral instruments and the occasional keyboard. They are all pleasant, in a "new age" sort of way, but lacking musical substance. Nice background music for the office or at home, perhaps.

My chief disappointment is that all twelve pieces sound monotonously similar. I assumed that the theme of this album is the diversity of expressions as humans attempt to dance with God. Leaving the theological aspects aside (this is, after all, an album of music not a theological text), I would have expected a greater diversity of rhythm and tune. However, each track seems to flow into the next. Perhaps this is reflective of "new age spirituality" where truth and deity are rather elastic, but that would take some elucidation from Ian Anderson himself. The music itself doesn't seem to have much to say. If these are twelve dances with God, perhaps it would be better to let Him take the lead.

5 out of 5 stars completely satisfied..........2004-08-09

I have been a long time Tull fan and consequently, Ian Anderson.
As mentioned in earlier reviews on this page, this is a true gem and a tribute to Ians ability to be musically creative, fluid and expansive in a musical genre distinctly different from his rock and blues roots.

5 out of 5 stars Magical.......2004-05-19

This album holds me in rapt fascination whenever I play it. Each song is Anderson's interpretation of the spirit of one of Earths religions. The 12 songs are unique in their own right, but somehow mesh with each other, like they are all really dancing with the same God. Each time I listen to this work I hear more or feel something different. It is a masterpiece.

4 out of 5 stars Driven.......2004-01-21

This album has more direct drive then any of thier albums before it. The Industrial tribal-metal dirge approach has nearly gone and left behind not the battle, but now a map of the battle(an overview if you will), giving Neurosis a displacing edge from what early fans like myself came to know. Times of Grace is a more straight forward plunge then thier previous "Through Silver in Blood". Through Silver in Blood being an album which takes the skin and bone of your head and rips it back and thats if you can make it through the shear intensity(Through Silver in Blood is still my favorite album by them).

"Times of Grace" is much less punishing then previous albums and emphasizes on a new look at things for Neurosis. Bag-pipes find thier way to Neurosis as a more forefront then before and lend an amazingly touching effect. "Soveriegn" which came after "Times of Grace" began an even deeper plunge into what Neurosis became during "A Sun that Never Sets" that is... much more crystal and elegant... patient. Neurosis are a band that never loses themselves for the fact that they reinvent themselves and grow. Listening to Neurosis is like witnessing evolution in time lapse. Prepare to have your mind opened.

If you are new to Neurosis do not start here. I'd suggest starting with "Enemy of the Sun" or "Souls At Zero" so you may have a clue as to what the middle ground battlefield was(so far) for Neurosis and from being warriors to war heroes...

5 out of 5 stars A mystery wrapped in an enigma wrapped in a vest.......2004-01-12

The metal world is, regrettably, almost as full of copycats and one-trick ponies as the mainstream, but Neurosis are one band that have legitimately earned the label of innovators. "Times of Grace" is easily one of the most primal and visceral albums ever recorded, but that's far from the whole story, as it's also among the most creative and intelligent metal albums of recent years. Not afraid to push their songs into the vicinity of the ten-minute mark, Neurosis compose epics of mountainous proportions, replete with punishing dynamics and stunning musicianship. Listening to "Times of Grace" is a daunting proposition, as it's not "radio-ready" to the say the least. However, this album is a grower of the highest order, as its brilliance is steadily revealed with repeated listens.

While there are plenty of metal bands out there that make lots of noise, few if any can shape it in as discordant and unsettling a manner as Neurosis. This isn't speed metal, or grindcore, or some other style that just seeks to beat the listener into the ground (not that there's anything wrong with that!). The heaviest tracks, such as "The Doorway," "End of the Harvest," and the title track, don't burst forth from speakers so much as they ooze forth, enveloping the listener in a primordial haze with some serious mind-warping potential. In a refreshing change of pace from traditional metal sounds, the guitars are as much about atmosphere and complexity as brutality, creating unpredictable layers of tightly coiled, distorted riffage. Jason Roeder's tribal-influenced drumming is among the heaviest and most ominous in history, and you can feel the disaffection in every note of the hardcore-style screams. Slower, more minimal fare such as "Under The Surface" and "Belief" manages to be equally menacing, maintaining a clenched intensity that's hard to define and even harder to resist.

There are some variations on this album's theme as well. Like all great artists, Neurosis can venture into diverse sonic territories without abandoning what makes them great in the first place. "The Last You Know" weaves some subtle bagpipe textures into the all-out metal assault, while "Descent" consists of nothing but some haunting pipes and a martial drumbeat. "Away" is (gulp) a ballad, but its mournful strings and pained vocals elevate it well above the plain. And the album closer, "The Road to Sovereignty," is a horn-led symphonic piece, with only the drumming providing any evidence of a rock influence.

In the end, "Times of Grace" is a staggering achievement, offering indescribable amounts of musical and emotional depth. It's a full-fledged sonic experience that will not only assault your ears but burrow its way into your soul. Neurosis plumb the depths of the human psyche with their music, and if you can withstand the onslaught you'll emerge a stronger person for it. "Times of Grace" is simultaneously gut-wrenching, virtuosic, and challenging, and ultimately uplifting. For all its bluster and fury, this album ultimately offers the redemption that can only come from such a harrowing journey.

5 out of 5 stars Altered state.......2003-07-19

The gentle Eastern flavoured bleeps and chords of "Suspended In Light" cannot prepare the unwary listener for the next harrowing 64 minutes of their life.

All of a sudden, the gentle sounds are gone, and a veritable rockfall of hulking, scathing guitars are crashing around you, scraping the skin from the inside of your ear canals. Acidic voices screech from the hellish Golgotha emanating from the speakers. There is little respite. There is no let up. Track after bludgeoning track smashes against the bulkhead of your sanity, or trickles delicately across your subconscious. Welcome to the psychosis of Neurosis.

Neurosis don't create songs as such, but geological epochs of immense sound, bordering on noise, but held on the teetering balance between control and chaos. You don't so much listen to this album as you do absorb it. Distortion drips from everything, like water dripping from the walls of a darkened cave. It is dark, brooding, and brutal, but doesn't sound anything like Death Metal or Black Metal. This transcends categorisation. There is layer upon layer of sound in a complex laminate, which at times could be random, because it meshes too perfectly to possibly be created by human hands.

Many questions are posed, only a few are answered. How are these sounds being made? Why are they so loud? Why is there such a compulsion to keep listening? Why doesn't this get boring? Why didn't I listen to this years ago? Why doesn't this sell millions?

Forget artificial stimulants that need to be inhaled, ingested or injected. 'Times Of Grace' will induce a perfectly safe, perfectly legal altered state of consciousness.

5 out of 5 stars Truly One of the Great Statements in Music.......2003-07-08

My musical interests include death metal but I must say Neurosis is the heaviest, most intense band I have ever heard. Ironically, though, to classify them as a "metal band" oversimplifies what they are doing. More like psychadelic industrial, it's really art-music: highly creative, organic, and as emotionally riveting as Radiohead. This album is the pinnacle of their achievement. Like other people it took me a few listens to get into but when it hit me, man - I was hooked forever. I consider this album and "Through Silver in Blood" their two finest moments, largely due to the addition of sonic genius Noah Landis to the band's lineup. The only other music that has hit me on such a level is the work of J.S. Bach. Experience the great lament of Neurosis.

4 out of 5 stars Great album but not their best..........2002-08-05

the only reason that i'm holding back from 5 stars is because these jerks made me buy two separate cds. the cd is pretty good by itself but absolutely amazing when played simultaneously with tribe of neurot's "grace." i don't know why they didn't just mix both albums together in the studio. the neurosis cd is much better with the extra neurot effects and i seriously can't imagine anyone wanting to listen to the neurot album on its own... anyway, if you like this album, i highly recommend "enemy of the sun" and "through silver in blood." at this point i wouldn't hesitate to call either of those albums "seminal classics."

4 out of 5 stars ANJANI SACRED NAMES - SO SO.......2007-02-04

Should have guessed by the title, it is a bit too far on the worship-music side for my liking, kind of choir-like. Anjani's voice is always superb, no complaints ever about that, just that this is not her usual style and nowhere near jazz-like. Good for a kid's lullabye music cd.

1 out of 5 stars Unmoved.......2006-11-06

Monotonous and lack luster performances; the words and lyrics do not resonate with an authenticity. A total drag to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Putting on the garment of His Presence.......2005-01-30

Anjani Thomas contributes her lovely voice to Leonard Cohen's masterpiece Dear Heather, adding a touch of the sublime to songs like On That Day (They Wounded New York) and Nightingale. This uplifting album of her own songs is a work of devotion in praise of our Judeo-Christian God.

As such, it mirrors the work of the Psalmist. Anjani plays keyboards and guitar while bass and percussion round of the sound, which is mostly gentle and acoustic. The moving Kyrie Eleison is sung in Greek, whilst Yoshua is a blend of Hebrew and English and the gripping Ari Shemot contains Hebrew, Portuguese and English in a seemless blend of beauty.

The song Praise is an invocation of divine and angelic names like Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel and Michael, a gentle but powerful prayer. Another of my favourites is the comforting and reassuring Yeshurun and the exultant Blessing where her voice really soars on the most beautiful melody on the album. In style, this one in fact reminded me of the early work of folk legend Judy Collins.

The last two tracks are quite mystical and gnostic, YHVH being especially enchanting with awesome comforting and healing emanations. This song would be ideal for devotional activities like meditation and prayer. In this regard, interested listeners might want to investigate Jonathan Goldman's CD Holy Harmony: Healing Code Tuning Forks And Ancient YHSVH Chant.

Those who love Van Morrison in his more spiritual moments, or the classical work Tehillim (Psalms) by Steve Reich, will definitely love this graceful work of devotion. Amongst female artists, this spiritual undertone is also present in the work of vocalists like Emmylou Harris, Jennifer Warnes and Jane Siberry.

The CD case contains a glossary of Hebrew, Greek, Latin and Syriac (Aramaic) terms. The Sacred Names is a real find, and I thank Leonard Cohen who, by using Anjani's voice on his latest album, put me on her trail. Let all that breathe praise the Eternal.

5 out of 5 stars The Sacred Names.......2003-02-10

I am not a religious man. But I highly appreciate this CD.
All her songs are very comforting.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2001-10-28

Anjani takes a different approach on her sophomore release, The Sacred Names, produced with Leonard Cohen. Using her delicate harmonies and talent as a keyboardist, Anjani sings her praises to the Lord. But don't expect the usual Christian album here. Anjani continues to include her Hawaiian/Jazz/Folk influences, making The Sacred Names stand out from contemporary Christian releases.

2 out of 5 stars not to great.......2007-04-04

We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.

3 out of 5 stars Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22

I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.

1 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for........2004-07-04

You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.

1 out of 5 stars Now I know why there were no song samples to listen to ..........2004-07-04

I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

Frank Patterson is an Irish tenor in the grand tradition of John McCormack and Josef Locke. God Bless America! is a live recording of a concert he performed in tribute to his adopted country. The songs range from traditional Irish tunes like "The Star of the County Down" and "The Spinning Wheel" to sentimental music-hall ballads like "Mother Machree" and "The Rose of Tralee." He also sings the inevitable "O Solo Mio" (is there a tenor born who can resist it?) and Andrew Lloyd Webber's "The Music of the Night." Patterson is joined on a number of tunes by his wife, Eily O'Grady, and her Irish Harp Orchestra. Patterson is an unabashedly emotional singer who wrings the last teardrop out of chestnuts like "Danny Boy," but he does it in such a charming manner that his performances never descend into kitsch. --Michael Simmons

4 out of 5 stars Just Nice Music.......2007-05-13

Frank Patterson does his best singing when he simply sings the familiar songs with heartfelt passion. He does nothing fancy and ends up with a superior product. Well worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars "Love and Happiness through the power of song".......2000-03-26

Irish tenor Frank Patterson was born and raised in Tipperary, performing at an early age with the Wren Boys. Patterson's early works were primarily classical, but with the increasingly popularity of celtic music, Frank turned his energies toward his homeland traditional folk ballads. PBS special "Ireland in Song" was a tremendous hit, giving him more exposure than ever to the world with his "God" given talent.

This album - "God Bless America - An Irish Salute", is one of the most touching compilations of music ever recorded. One of the highlights is his wife Eily O'Grady and her Irish Harp Orchestra, simply an emotional pair of people enjoying what they do best, spreading love and happiness through the power of song.

5 out of 5 stars Saw the PBS Special.......2000-03-22

I do not have the album but saw the PBS special last Saturday night and have been looking for the cd and will buy it. The song My Son is the most moving and beautiful I have ever heard. Having three sons, I felt it related to each of them and it can be for either mother or father. The rest of the songs were superb. Mr Patterson is a warm and wonderful human being and has a great voice. His son played the violin when he sang My Son, by the way. Also, his wife's group of harpists are wonderful. All in all, a great group of songs show and I am sure a great cd. I also want the tape when it is available.

Sorry, I have not heard this album, but the song "MY SON" was suggested for a Mother/Son dance at his wedding. I would surely love to see the words first, before I purchase the album.. Thank you for any help you may have.

5 out of 5 stars Igloo Magazine's REVIEW.......2005-12-03

Review by: Mark Teppo at igloomag.com
(05.10.05) A collaboration between David Sullivan (Magwheels) and Jason Crumer (Aluminum Noise), Amazing Grace folds the drift of processed guitar into the cavernous expanse of dark ambient echoes. Shards of voices still haunt these drone spaces, diaphanous ghosts floating in the reverberating space, while the elongated peal of metallic chimes rise up from unfathomable depths like time warped ritual noises from forgotten mechanical societies. Heavy waves of sound roll out from Revival Times and, like the tiny piano melodies and the whimper of terrified machinery that scuttles through these tracks, we are captives of the bleak landscape.

"Faith Healing (Symbols)" swells with broadly painted tones, echoes of sound that fill every available space before beginning their gradual decay into silence, while tiny shards of metal fall from high places to ring out against a bedrock of pitted steel. The voices of ancestral workers rise up through a heavy fog, trailing streamers of static. The final track, "---," is filled with machinery that groans like a wounded animal, moans of noise and shivering coughs of static that is the death rattle of the industrial nation. A Morse signal repeats in "Blind," a warning beacon sounding from the depths of a ruined citadel while glacial tones evolve in an elastic melody of sepulchral lamentation. An icy wind blows in a spectral string quartet and a phantom bell tree in "Blind Man's Ears." Hidden deep within the mix is a woman's voice, her words so obscured that she exists only as an instrument, as a textural element.

While Sullivan's guitar is the foundation of every track, it is these many strata of dense sounds that make this record so engaging. Revival Times is the lugubrious miasma of the Industrial Age that still haunts the edge of our dreaming lives. Recommended.

    Product Description

Fullfilling the definition of PAZZ, the melding of Pop and Jazz this album does it all. Disc one is classic jazz at it's best bracketed by two Billy Strayhorn tunes Isfahan and Blood Count. And centered by the most recorded jazz standard of all by a jazz artist, 'Round Midnight. The real surprise is the original composition of this 13 yr old prodigy called Fast Metabolism. It has Monkish overtones and a great groove. The second Cd features a more contemporary flair with covers of two pop tunes, Lennon/McCartney, Oh Darling and Stevie Wonder, Signed,Sealed,Delivered. With a number of original compositions with more of a contemporary vocal flair and jazz undertones.
