4 out of 5 stars An excellent album.......2004-06-05

Live At Reading '81 (1981.) Samson's first live album.

Before Bruce Dickinson joined the mighty Iron Maiden, he was the lead vocalist in Paul Samson's band. Although these days of his career tend to go overlooked by most, they are actually an excellent phase of his career that is worth checking out if you're a fan of his. The last concert he did with the band was recorded and released as a live album. Read on for my review of Live At Reading '81.

PROS:
-If you want a live album that captures the energy of the band, as only a live recording could do, this release will be perfect for you.
-The band plays most of their big hits.
-Every member of the band is in their prime here.

CONS:
-This album (and every other Samson recording) is extremely hard to find. If you want this, you're probably going to have to order it.
-The sound quality could have been better.
-Many of the songs fail to top their studio counterparts.

OVERALL:
Overall, this is very good release from Samson. I wish it was more readily available, though. If you're a fan of Bruce Dickinson's and you want to see what he did in his pre-Maiden days, pick up this album. It's doubtful you'll be disappointed with it. Also, don't forget about the studio albums he released with them!

3 out of 5 stars A Must For Dickinson Fans.......2004-04-12

I'd always thought of Samson as the poor man's Iron Maiden. Not to say that Samson are not any good. If you like the nwobhm explosion, you'll like "Live at Reading".
This was the last show that Bruce did with Samson. It was also the show that convinced Steve Harris to hire Dickinson to sing for Iron Maiden.
"Live at Reading" is a good live album. It sounds good and the production is pretty decent. All the essential Samson hits are hear. "Take it Like a Man, Vice Versa, Big Brother and Walking out on You" are some of the classic tracks performed. Paul Samson is no Dave Murray or Adrain Smith, but he seems to be perfect for what kind of music Samson plays.
I had read about Samson and was surprised at how good they sounded on this live album because I was led to believe that musically, Samson just were'nt that good.
True, the songs are'nt as catchy as a lot of other nwobhm bands, but Samson deserve a fair shot at glory, especially with Bruce on vocals.
If you are a Bruce Dickinson completist, you must have this!

5 out of 5 stars Bruce, Bruce.......2002-08-26

This is Bruce's last show with Samson before Joining a Band called Iron Maiden, this album catches samson at it's best, recorded live at the famous Reading Festival in the U.K.

Hear bruce's voice at it's best ripping into the song's like earth mother, hammerhead, riding with the angels and bright lights.

This album is a must, once listened you will play it again and again.
The guitar work from mr samson is great to listen to.

4 out of 5 stars fitting testament of a one great rockband.......2006-08-04

Long sought live recording of one of the most underestimated B.N.W.O.H.M. bands, who certainly were a the fore of that genre. After a good start they released with Bruce Bruce (a.k.a. Bruce Dickinson of later Iron Maiden fame) a second and third album, "Head On" snd "Shock Tactics" which are true, often overlooked (and sometimes hard to come by) classics.
So when they played at the prestige Reading Festival in 1981 they had 3 albums out on which they based their live set and from which this CD is culled. Switching material mainly from the second and third album they showed what they were up and able to. The sound is okay, the singer in top notch form, the band steady, playing a couple of extra notes in between the songs. Sadly this is without the (to my opinion that is) brilliant drummer Thunderstick, who already had left the band. His kind of drumming is unique and must be a blueprint to all kinds of other rockdrummers, playing with a terrible speed and using a big array of toms. He is incredible. His replacement is competent though but listening to the aforementioned studio albums you certainly can hear the difference. Paul Samson is playing well but I think their sound was much due to the drummer. Anyway, the songs are easy recogniseable although I prefer the originals. After 9 well known songs the set ends in a kind of outstretched boogie with "Gravy Train", not taken from any album, while latterday CD's contain 3 bonussongs, which to my knowledge at least are fairly new. In so far this was also the bands swangsong in this line-up because directly after the show Bruce Dickinson was talked in to that of Iron Maiden. Therefore this album can be seen as a historical document in more than one way. Afterwards the band regrouped with another singer and also different musicians bar Samson himself but they were merely a shadow of the band that played on Reading and recorded this album.

5 out of 5 stars Bruce Bruce?? Who is that?..oh yeah SCREAM FOR ME REDDING!!!.......2003-02-19

Bruce Bruce (Dickinson) pre Maiden. What more can you ask for? Not much, his voice is in fine form. This cd was recorded at the Reading Festival in the UK, the same festival that Maiden played a few times. The songs are great NWOBHM, and Bruce is a vocal god, enough said. If you are getting into Maiden and have never head of this group buy this and hear him in his early days.

Nothing more to add really, I love Bruce and so this was an easy choice to add to my collection. "Riding With The Angels' "Earth Mother" "Nice Girl" " Vice Versa" are all great songs. BUY IT!!
