This twofer compendium--which contains all the songs from the Cro-Mags' first two albums--can serve as an ideal introduction to this tough-as-nails Gotham band, which swerved from brute-force hardcore to slightly more sophisticated thrash between the recordings. The Age of Quarrel material, sung by John Joseph, is pure street-thug hardcore--"Show You No Mercy," "Do unto Others"--that's heavy on both declarations of scene unity and threats against those who aren't part of the scene. Most tracks clock in under two minutes. The band stretches out on the Best Wishes songs, which see bassist Harley Flanagan taking over on vocals. More metallic in tone, à la Anthrax, the "new, improved" Cro-Mags prove themselves capable of kicking out the jams guitarwise and even provoking some thought through Flanagan's Krishna-conscious lyrics. --David Sprague

Is this version a ''bootleg''? THE AGE IS A CLASICK!!!!PERFECTION!!!.......2005-09-23
Ok..''THE AGE OF QUARREL'' is one the most PISSED OFF ALBUMS EVER MADE!!! and is one of the most OVER LOOKED ''cross over'' albums..EVER!!!
The singer(Eric..right?) was one of the best vocalists I think I have ever heard!!! listen to the song ''LIFE ON MY OWN'' he sounds like he killed him self after that one verse ''You come INTOOOO this world..'' its AMAZING!!! that song is also like one of the best ever wirtten!!!HAILS!!!!!
This stars off with ''WE GOTTA KNOW'' which is a perfect starter GREAT epic intro and feel!! this is also the first thing I ever heard from the guys..saw the video of it on LOUD music.. many years ago!!
All of the songs are great..some better than others..but I think we all have our faves!!
And of course this was made in 1986!!!!!!!1986!!!!!!! you cant get more pissed off than that!!! THIS IS TIMELESS THOUGH!!!!! but the 80's did RULE!!!!!!!
MASSIVE STUFF!!!!!!!!
This can be downloaded for FREE!!! on their OFFICAL web site!! go to www.cromags.com!!!
ALL HAIL AND BOW BEFORE THE AGE!!!!!!!!!!
''WE GOTTA KNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!''
SPLAT !!! SPLAT!!!!SPLAT!!!!!.......2005-09-14
YES ! THIS ALBUM " BEST WISHES " KILLS. WE ALWAYS LISTENED TO AGE OF QUARREL WHILE EVERYONE GOT IN THEIR POSITIONS FOR A FREE FOR ALL KILLJOY ! THE SPRING OF 1989 WAS A THRASHING TIME AND ME AND SOME FRIENDS GOT INTO PAINTBALL. A HURTFUL SPORT THAT LETS OUT SOME AGGRESSION. WE WOULD PUT THE SPEAKERS ON TOP OF THE VAN, CRANK UP THE BASE AND PUT THE TREB. AT 6 AND POP IN CRO MAGS BEST WISHES TAPE AND WOULD PLAY AGE OF QUARREL. ONCE THE SONG WAS OVER WE WOULD DESTROY EACH OTHER IN A PAINFUL EVENT "SHIRTLESS" . THIS BAND WOULD PUMP YOU UP WHILE YOU WERE DECIDING WHO TO KICKASS ON FIRST. GREAT BAND AND ALBUM. NO PAIN, NO FUN.
Another wonderful Hardcore Band.......2005-09-08
Anything by another Hardcore forefather is worth a listen. The older stuff is raw, but you can get and idea of where they were headed.
"Survival of the streets"..........2005-03-10
I bought these two huge hardcore albums more a decade ago (LP versions...) and I still find it to be essentials of that very special musical style... "So, don't miss the occasion to get them in one CD!" Just because Cro-Mags was at his apogee during the eighties, and these guys were real... and not fake! They were talking about what they were really experiencing : pain, anger and hunger! You should see these two albums as a testimony concerning the new york city hardcore scene of that period...
1 - The Age of Quarrel : If you like oldschool hardcore, I guess you probably have this one in your possession but if you are eager to discover what hardcore meant in the late eighties (raw, fury, political lyrics and INSPIRED music!), you shouldn't ignore 'The Age of Quarrel'... All is said in fifteen 'bullets'. John Joseph is the definitive frontman of Cro-Mags. He is really mesmerizing in it. With the help of Harley Flanagan and Parris Mayhew, he delivers an astonishing performance we can hardly forgot... This album is so good that it's really hard to name the best songs... Just an example : the intro of the 'We gotta know' is simply amazing... No less than that...
2 - Best Wishes : more metal oriented and Flanagan is now singing (quite good, I have to admit). The band clearly refused to do a "The age of quarrel : the return" or "part II..." and decided to explore new musical territories with excellent results. I had some difficulties to accept it then. But now, I think it was the best thing they could have done and "Best Wishes" contains superb hardcore-metal classics... ('Death camps' is my favourite but 'The only one' is a great and touching (!) song too...
Needless to say, with these two superb albums, The Cro-Mags influenced innumerable hardcore bands around the world...
you think all these lamers today are hard?.......2004-01-03
this is the original hardcore/metal band! this album was made specifically for people to mosh and beat the piss out of one another and spit on their lifeless body afterwards. my recommendation: do a few lines of coke, don your combat boots and find a fat girl. enjoy!
