Customer Reviews:
Amazingly dark, bipolar feeling........2006-02-11
I feel Ancient is a highly underrated band, and this work illustrates my point perfectly. A half concept, half song record is unlike others in many ways. My favorite part of it is the way "The Cainian Cronicle" blends the cold atmosphere of Black Metals' roots ala Darkthrone and Gorgoroth with the magesty of the Symphonic Side of the coin, more along the lines of Cradle of Filth, Old Man's Child and Limbonic Art, another overlooked band. Another win is the moodiness of the record. The riffs are mostly grim, although it is notable that some of these riffs struck me as almost happy, or even spiritual, not a lite feat by any means in Black Metal, or in Metal as a whole, in fact, Emperor and Cradle, and Satyricon are the only that come to mind, quite possibly the very reason their great.
Overall, and exellent work by an underground band who deserves recognition and has for years.
Great for it's age, but..........2003-09-29
Ancient, to me, is very unique to listen to. The way they use blastbeats and the overall speed are different than any other black metal I've heard, at least that I can think of right now. The blastbeats fit into the background like you've never heard. The normal drums seem to create tempo in a softer way. Also, the vocals are the most extreme I've ever heard. The little booklet says that Kimberly Goss is on vocals. Sometimes, there is regular female singing and once there is opera, but the growling is hard to believe is female. Also, Sinergy, another band she's been with, says she sings, but I only hear a non-power metal vocalist sing once - in Shadow Island (I only have "Suicide By My Side"). But that's Sinergy. Mabye telling you that will make you realize that this is more like a normal black metal album. It is nothing like Opera IX, if that is what you are wondering. The way the vocalist is like a regular vocalist reminds me of Arch Enemy.
Alright, enough about that. The keyboards are very, very good. When they are used alone and powerfully is usually during one of those strange blastbeats. For those of you wondering, this album came out in 1996, so don't expect perfect quality. Also, my main highlight is the intro. Its about 2 minutes long, but it's all keys, or at least something that sounds like keys. The other songs I like are 2, 8, and 11. 2 of the songs on here are over 8 minutes, and it goes by fast.
Overall, I have a hard time describing this album 10 minutes after I listen to it - this is the best I can do. I hope it's enough to tell you if you want to buy it. For most fans of high quality music, I wouldn't bother with this. Opera IX, Rotting Christ, and Samael are 3 unknown black metal bands I would recommend before Ancient. There's not really much else to say about this album, except it's about 64 minutes long, I think... mabye 66. If you love black metal or are a diehard keyboard fan (of all ages), go ahead and get this - it shouldn't dissappoint you. But if you're like me, you'll want to stick with Dragon Lord, Dimmu Borgir, and Agathodaimon.
compare this to the chapter of Genesis........2000-08-22
i was reading the Bible one day after listening to the second song and it lined up perfectly with the chapter where cain kills his brother abel. i like the screaming and the guitar playing on this album. the curse also has an eye of the storm effect, where aphazel plays a shimmering classical guitar bit, and then the second side of the storm hits your ears again like a category 5 hurricane.
a tidal wave of screams and guitars.......1999-09-12
ancient sounds like a tidal wave of screaming and guitars. the song the curse is a beautiful example of what i am talking about. the curse has an eye of the hurricane effect and then the full fury of the song comes slamming up against your eardrums. beautiful.
Pure Black Metal by masters of the Pagan Cycle.......1997-03-29
Ancient has lost their original lead singer, Grimm, and attained Lord Kaiaphas. Aphazel's guitar and bass is not too complex, but they give a real neat and primal mood. Kaiaphas' vocals are higher and almost 'eviler' than Grimm's, with a clearness that is quite amazing. Though the guitar sounds pretty much the same through the whole album, it is easy to listen to. The second, third and fourth songs are the tale of Cain and his exile from Nod, with six different voices for the characters of Cain, Lilith, Adam, Michael, the crone and the narrater. A good Black Metal album with a few neat synth and keyboard tracks. More old school, and great cover art. END
