Seth Putnam is the man.......2007-07-30
A.C. had been all I could listen to lately and I didnt know why. I recently went to buy some cds and just looked to see if they had any of this bands music. I do own all the cds, just wanted to see if they had any. I was so happy to see this record in the bin. I looked on the back and burst out laughing in the record store. The some of the funniest song titles A.C. have ever written are on this cd. Sure his singing isnt so great but I love it. They are suppose to release a cd of new material (this being old material), so I hope A.C. releases anther cd by the years end. Thanks Seth for making me laugh when I need one.

The astonishingly and presumably deliberately inept artwork of this debut from Californian skate punks OPM helps create a carefully contrived image of a bunch of lads intent on loafing about, doing as little as possible. The threesome's modus operandi--which involves sun, sex, tattoos, getting stoned, and traveling the streets on four small wheels--is cemented by the opening tracks "Stash Up" (a paean to smoking grass and not giving a flying one for anything) and "Heaven Is a Halfpipe" (a surprisingly catchy sing-along about the joys of skateboarding). Menace to Sobriety's boisterous, good-time feel sprawls across its 15 tracks like a teenager on a particularly comfortable sofa, its bleach-top college-rock roots (Blink 182, Sugar Ray) regularly spiced up by Latino piano and horns, ska rhythms, hip-hop textures, and noisy raps. --Mike Pattenden
Customer Reviews:
AWESOME first CD. Bye Bye AR HELLO Suburban Noize!.......2007-02-01
This is a must have CD. OPM is great and hit a home run with this first effort. Forthemasses and California Poppy are also excellent listening. Nobody does it quite like OPM. The BEST Suburban Noize Records band. I recommend all the OPM records. High quality stuff.
Best of Genre.......2005-04-06
I'm 51 years old, and can't quite bring myself to love the rap genre, the only thing my son listens to. OPM is quite the refreshing change; Real drums playing great grooves. Happy songs, even if they, like their brethren, Kottonmouth kings, focus a bit much on drugs and alcohol, it is still lyrics that are friendlier than run of the mill hood rap. My favs on this CD are Capitan and Dealer man. All the others are good too. I'm hoping to work up a couple of these in my classic rock band, I know it will get em dancin'!
kinda crappy.......2004-07-16
this cd is probably the worst cd of its genre i hated it. it sounded like the were tryin to hard to be original and have no talent
Creative Mix of Styles.......2003-07-29
Wonderful CD from start to finish. Starting with "Stash Up" you have an average rock song; go to songs like "Trucha" and "Unda" and you have something new. Trucha is a song with a latin feel but then kicks in with great hip-hop style lyrics. Then with "Unda" you get a cool ska feel. Then take 360 degrees back and listen to "Better Daze" and you have a song resembling that of Everlast. Even though it is a CD mixed with styles, they all seem to flow with each other and all have well written lyrics. A great CD that I would recommend to fans of rock, hip-hop, or punk; all will probably find this to their liking.
Wowzers.......2003-05-18

Ugly Kid Joe at their best. This album is a unique mix between grunge and metal.Enough comments. Buy it!!!
Underrated Album.......2006-09-14
Ugly Kid Joe's 1995 Album, "Menace To Sobriety", is an underrated little album by a band unfairly remembered only for "Neighbor" and "Cats In The Cradle". After purchasing it at a heavily reduced price, I finally started listening to it and now often find myself returning to it. Standout tracks include the growling instrumental "Intro", "God", the punchy "Clover", "Suckerpath" and closer "Slower Than Nowhere". Three and a half stars.
Also recommended if you enjoy this album:
Scatterbrain - "Here Comes Trouble" (1990)
Stephen Pearcy - "Social Intercourse" (2002)
Menace to being taken seriously.......2006-07-19
The frailty of the vehicle this band built comes crashing down around their ears on this disc. When you name your band as a joking swipe at Pretty Boy Floyd you can't hope to be taken too seriously. And they weren't. Which is a pity as lead single Milkmans Son had some mental teeth. Not plenty but some. And the muscular riffs kick in straight away on both the instrumental intro and the second track God, which is a nice statement of intent.
Sparks of the humour of this band abound still, such as Jesus Rode A Harley. But this was the mid 90's and UKJ's sense of humour wasn't to be tolerated unfortunately, though darlings of the time Ministry were allowed to have a hit with Jesus Built My Hotrod.... Elsewhere we get bulked up guitars with more getting down to business than the debut, an increase in gear changes throughout the album as well and a rougher vocal delivery by Whitfield Crane. And the drumming is at times quite insistent as well to lay a serious rock foundation.
This album failed in it's mission - to bridge early hit laden UKJ with a more mature, heavier UKJ with more staying power. The band worked their hardest mind you, even refusing to bemoan the fact that MTV had utterly dropped bands such as UKJ in search of the next shoegazing flannel wearing heroin horror story when magazines asked them about this trend. So at least they stood up to be counted. For me, a record caught in the crossfire of a subgenre battle for supremacy and somehow tainted due to the fact that UKJ were on the losing team.
One of the BEST Ugly Kid Joe CD's out there.......2002-09-16
This is just a great, great, CD. Heavy and melodic. I recommend this to anyone who likes good music.
Menace rocks yer world.......2002-03-19
menace to sobreity: The 1995 release by the californian wacked out rockers was a good success but quickly swept under the rug by the press. Kerrang magazine in the week it was released hailed it as possibly the 'album of the year', but later on in the year, after mercury had not re - newed their deal, ugly kid joe lost their handsome amount of mtv airplay. Last i heard the album had sold over 500 000 copies. The album is approached differently than Americas Least Wanted, for starters it's a lot darker and has overtones of some well fuelled party sessions up in those santa barbarian moutains. Cleverly titled ' intro ' is exactly what it is, about 2 minutes of growling slow riffs, i like it. Brings us onto ' god ', questioning religious beliefs against some amazing drum signatures and awesomely fluent riffs. As the album draws you in with the agression, it also winds you down, with songs like 'cloudy skies' and ' slower than nowhere '. You then have ' milkmans son' the single that was lifted off the album, it has a great great melody and sway chorus. This has got to be one of the finest rock/metal songs you'll ever hear, after 3 listens i was completely in awe of the bands musical vision. It's definitely heavy. And cuts out the ' cat's in the cradle ' market, but you'd be a fool not buy it.....i recommend indeed

This album is a perfect example of exactly what is wrong with the music industry these days. Just when I thought music could not get any more tired and derivative, this album comes along to reach new heights of mediocrity. Everything here has been done so many times by so many other bands. The music, the lyrics, the attitude (or lack thereof) - all so weak. The truly sad part is that I have no doubt that this band will be huge. Yet another in a long line of "LCD" (Lowest Common Denominator)bands that rule the airwaves these days. Please help us.
