I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.

There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.

      2007 Digitally Remastered Edition of the Classic Live Album Recorded by the Early Lineup of David Coverdale's Whitesnake. "Live in the Heart of the City" was Actually Released Twice, and this Edition Brings Both Versions Together in One Package for the First Time. Of the Two Versions, the First was Recorded at London's Hammersmith Odeon on November 23, 1978 and was Issued as an Extended EP (Just Over Half an Hour Long). The Objective was to Introduce Whitesnake to the Japanese Market. The Second Version was a Proper All-singing, All-dancing, Long-player, Again Recorded at Hammersmith, this Time on June 23 and 24, 1980. Now You have the Complete History on These Two Discs as Well as One Track that was Previously Unreleased, Another Take of "Ain't No Love in the Heart of the City".

      First of all, great classic live album... BUT where are the bonus tracks from the rest of the show(s)?! All of these versions have been released before. There is surely space because this is spread out over 2 CD's. That might have justified the $43.00 price tag. The diehard fans need more!!! C'mon Coverdale!!!! By the way, the new Whitesnake sucks!

        Come on! A chance to hear Bertolt Brecht sing his own Mack the Knife before Bobby Darrin messed it up! How many CDs are going to have that?!

        Kurt Weill and Broadway fans will probably feel an intense need to have this album, and I'm not sure I'd be able to dissuade them. There's some good stuff on this recording, to be sure, but a great deal of it is in German, and much of it might not interest even someone with just a casual interest in the material chronicled. While there's a strong representation of The Threepenny Opera (all in German), the selections from Lady in the Dark featuring Gertrude Lawrence and Danny Kaye are vital, as are the tracks of Mary Martin and Kenny Baker performing selected numbers from One Touch of Venus. (You can also hear Walter Huston performing a song from Knickerbocker Holiday, though it is, for some strange reason, "The Scars." It's an interesting historical record, but not a great song.) Lotte Lenya also sings some as well, which is a treat, but overall, this is a highly variable recording. Make sure you know exactly what you're getting beforehand, or you may be likely to find yourself--as I do--listening to only half the album.

            2007 Digitally Remastered Japanese Limited Edition Issue of the Album Classic in a Deluxe, Miniaturized LP Sleeve Replica of the Original Vinyl Album Artwork. This Classic Live Album was Recorded by the Early Lineup of David Coverdale's Whitesnake. "Live in the Heart of the City" was Actually Released Twice, and this Edition Brings Both Versions Together in One Package for the First Time. Of the Two Versions, the First was Recorded at London's Hammersmith Odeon on November 23, 1978 and was Issued as an Extended EP (Just Over Half an Hour Long). The Objective was to Introduce Whitesnake to the Japanese Market. The Second Version was a Proper All-singing, All-dancing, Long-player, Again Recorded at Hammersmith, this Time on June 23 and 24, 1980. Now You have the Complete History on These Two Discs as Well as One Track that was Previously Unreleased, Another Take of "Ain't No Love in the Heart of the City".
