Find This Album!!!!.......2006-09-21
A politician, musician, prophet, genius, and raving madman. All of these being parts that make up the sum of Kory Clarke lead singer of the 90's act Warrior Soul. This 90's band was far different from the "Seattle" era bands and fell far away from the Metal happenings the remaining 80's were tossing our way and yet despite the overall originality, only a choice few paid attention. Warrior Soul was a New York band and they spoke of life, injustice, and angst long before the likes of groups like Korn or Otep decided to mix those messages with their music. Socially relevant and somewhat prophetic, the words of Clarke rang the bell of truth for any who heard him. I think that the shifting in musical styles at the time caused Warrior Soul to be overlooked by people who would have loved them having been given the chance. The band featured Kory Clarke (vocals), Pete McClanahan (bass), Paul Ferguson (drums) and John Ricco (guitars) and lucky for us Escapi Music has chosen to remaster the five releases by the band in remastered and expanded editions. On their debut "Last Decade, Dead Century" the messages Clarke has for society are lined out from the opener "I See The Ruins" to the politically charged "Superpower Dreamland". Laments to the unpopular come forth in "The Losers", while my personal favorites "We Cry Out" & "Trippin' On Ecstacy" receive new life and in your face effect. "Downtown" speaks of life as Kory lived it while "Lullaby" is one of the most solemn ballads I had ever heard. A moment of soap boxing preaching is delivered during "Four More Years" which in a distorted and eerie voice, a cryptic view of the goings on in society is spoken about. I was proud to have been a fan from the release that this album originally saw and it received regular rotation on a friends college radio show. Now is the time to remember and relive this band, and for the new listener well you can simply pay attention. This is a must have for people who want relevant subject matter and deep lyrical content to their music.
The remastered edition of "LDDC" includes three bonus live tracks which are not professional board recordings and seem more audience bootleg. However, there is some inherent charm in this as you hear them from the direct listener perspective and while a tad low end you are able to relive the band in the live sense. It amounts to something in my opinion.
In today's music world of 2006 Clarke is a member of Dirty Rig, whose debut CD will also be available on Escapi Music.

4.3 Defining CD.......2006-10-27
Warrior Soul took some by storm (unfortunately not many). I love the slick production and the first 2 trax (Ruins, We cry out) set the stage for a solid release. My personal favorite is "In Conclusion". These guys could have been bigger with a label that knew how to promote their kind of music. Unfortunately that never happened. But if you are smart enough to read this, and got yourself to even look at Warrior Souls stuff, then you must HAVE this!
I Want My Money Back.......2006-08-14
Don't get me wrong, I really like Warrior Soul...just not this album, or Chill Pill for that matter. Where is the rock n' roll? Everything is moody and slow AKA Boring. I came to rock and Warrior Soul did not deliver. Don't be fooled by these people telling you how "amazing" this record is, what's really amazing is how on earth this cd was actually re-issued. Art-Rock = An Excuse To Suck.
GREAT CD.......2006-03-30
THIS IS ONE OF THOSE BANDS THAT MAKE A GREAT CD, THEN A NOT SO GREAT CD. AND SO ON. THIS ONE BEING GREAT! ROCKS FROM START TO FINISH.
Good Things Only Get Better With Time.......2004-06-26
While the powerful sound may be referred to as "heavy metal" by some, a more accurate description would be "art rock." The songs are built on ideas, themes, many of which include a plethora of irony and sarcasm (which is why the seemingly "upbeat" or angry sound of some of the songs are misunderstood by taking them literally).
The lead singer Korey Clarke has always believed that the musician should be a "shaman" of sorts. "Warrior Soul" definitely embodied Clarke's professional persona because it is inseperable from his own beliefs. This music is not entertainment, it is meant to make you think, meant to provoke the listener; thus, I can imagine why, ten years ago when this album came out, I was dumbstruck with its sheer intensity, and, ten years later, none of the songs have lost any of their initial power. For the same reason, this is why the band, although successful among the rock scene, was so misunderstood.
I also find that Clarke's messages (the songs are meant to give the listeners a "mission" of sorts, very admirable), are applicable to both the past and present, although I can also add that his songs were prophetic in many ways; however, in this truly decadent day and age of Britney Spears et al, and gangsta rap, such messages will clearly be lost. (I think the generation he referred to is now grown-up; I am among this generation). As I mentioned, the songs are clearly prophetic, and Clarke was ahead of his time. The symbolic "ruins" around us, and the virtual "wasteland" he sang about ten years ago are all around us.
As for the musical part of Warrior Soul, I can only say that the songwriting, lyrics, and performance are nothing short of amazing. Listening to this album over and over again for ten years and not finding fault with it is proof that this is a true classic. Take in note that I am a classically trained musician. People like us don't normally "take" to mainstream or rock music too easily.
hidden gem.......2003-06-29
This is one of those hidden gems destined to get buried in cacaphony of rock and roll history. This CD was not easy to fit into any category when it came out, which was part of the problem. To wit, I first heard it on my college radio station (amid the "modern rock" of the times, like The Smithereens and what not) ... and soon thereafter, they toured with Queensryche. Go figure.
While the lyrics of lead singer Kory Clarke were never too subtle, they are at least somewhat crafted here. In subsequent albums, the lyrics were so overt and political that it got too much, even for me -- though there was still some good stuff. On this one though, there's a great mix - and this guy's voice is just haunting. The strangeness of the vocals takes some getting used to - just like it did for Faith No More's "The Real Thing" which came out around the same time. Another classic.
"Four More Years" is a spoken word "song" that's pretty political - but extremely spooky. Has to be heard to be believed. But otherwise, this is filled with catchy and hard rockin' anthems - with those great vocals and lyrics mixed in. "We Cry Out" - "I See the Ruins" - "Lullaby" are my favorites.
