Volume 3. Pop/rock, hard rock, and some New Wave........2003-12-24
This particular series mostly featured the rock side of the decade, in a variety of styles and tempos. (There were also separate, similar comilations mainly covering New Wave type songs, and obscure pop hits). This was my favorite of the series, since every edition played like a good mix tape.
THIS REVIEW IS FOR VOLUME 3: ARENA ROCK.
Just as the title says, much of the hits here consist of pop tunes that are on the borderline of pop/rock and hard rock, along with a couple others.
1) "Too Much Time on my Hands," Styx -- The slightly art rock band turns the guitars up for a slightly hard rocking, fun, sythesized version of what some idiots called 'Corporate Rock.'
2) "We Built This City," Starship -- The story of living life and rocking out in San Francisco, as told by the former Jefferson Airplane band. Set to an uptempo, loud pop/rock beat which practically redefines the word 'Catchy.'
3) "Lovin' Every Minute of it," Loverboy -- New Wave tinged poppy hard rocker, which was this great band's biggest chart hit. I'm glad it was picked over "Turn Me Loose" or "Working for the Weekend," also great songs, but their mid '80s material is severely underrated.
4) "Boom Boom, Out Go the Lights," Pat Travers -- The live recording of this lively blues track is nice, but it seems totally out of place here. It's actually a late 70's song, the live recording of which came out in 1980. Whoever compiled this must've loved that song, 'cause they really stretched it here.
5) "Amanda," Boston -- Yet another underrated power ballad from this 70's rock band. A sweeping and slightly rocking love song.
6) "Freeze Frame," J. Geils Band -- If 80's pop, New Wave, hard rock, and pub rock ever met at an intersection and had a pileup, this is exactly what it would sound like. Not quite as good as "Centerfold," but pretty close.
7) "Election Day," Arcadia -- A darker New Wave number, done by a side project of Duran Duran. A fine tune, but seems out of place in a rock collection. If a Duran offshoot band was to be included, it should've been the more rocking Power Station's "Some Like it Hot."
8) "Tom Sawyer," Rush -- Yet another curveball, but a good one. An epic, heavy art rocker that bridges 70's and 80's rock styles. I might've picked "Distant Early Warning" instead, but I'm not complaining. Since I'm not much of a Rush fan, this is a great, easy way to have that song.
9) "High On You," Survivor -- One of the best songs of this style, more in the vein of the title. A poppish, keyboard laden rocker with a happy story of meeting a girl and being 'High' on them, so-to-speak.
As great as this collection is, I have to take a star off. Mainly it's for the lack of straight rock based tunes toward the end, with the exception of Survivor. I also would've preferred a couple more obscure tunes in the arena rock style, such as The Tubes "Talk To Ya Later," or the criminally overlooked "Don't Let Him Know" by Prism. Even something from a common band, like Genesis or Night Ranger.
All complaints aside, still a great, budget priced collection.
