5 out of 5 stars Mechanical Royalty.......2005-12-27

This is a tight album. I picked this album up due to the track Space Tech Banana Clip produced by MF Doom. RJD2 also came through nicely on The Clock Song production but the rest of the album will have ur head nodding fosho! This entire album is solid, every track is very mentally stimulating, lyrically and on the production tip. I can listen to the whole album without skipping tracks, but the tracks that stands out to me are I Need To Be, Special FX, The Clock Song, Birds, Broke Down, A.C.W.A.L.L, Dope, and the hidden track after Dope. I was surpised I never heard of these cats until now. They are a awesome group.

Babbletron is definitely what real/true hip-hop is all about!

5 out of 5 stars Great hip hop........2004-10-28

I was skeptical picking this up, I wasn't sure what to expect. After listening to it for a few weeks now, this is the best new group I've heard come out for awhile. They just have so many different styles, sometimes Jaymanilla will go from flowing and sounding like Guru to 93' Casual. The production is of high quality, there are probably about 3 songs that I don't like as much as the rest, with the RJD2 produced "Clock Song" as my favorite track. The beat and their flow make you feel high, its one of them songs that you can actually feel while listening to it, doesn't happen very often. My only gripe is the length probably, with a couple of interludes it leaves you only half full. I am excited to hear what else these guys can pull off, considering this is a debut for them, their upside is incredible.

5 out of 5 stars Definite Buy!.......2004-05-04

Wow, who in the heck are these people. This album came right out the blue, I mean I was in the store one day and I saw it. I had no idea that people like this are out there. This album is definitely bangin'. From the first song Babbletron has you, their bouncy yet soothing kicks and snares and their intense lyrics make the listener tune in with little or no patience, it's very satisfying. All their songs have a special feel to it, from "Birds" (my favorite song on the album), to "Hit Man Sonnet", every song is exceptional. The only problem I have with this album is that it's too short, it left me wanting much more. Now I am desperate to get my hands on as much Babbletron as I can muster, but there isn't that much there. Still, it's a very good purchase for the hip-hop consumer, don't miss out.

4 out of 5 stars Solid album.......2004-02-29

I first heard Babbletron on Embedded Studios CD I forget the name of it. I even thought Jay Manilla was cRays Walz for a while, they sound similar. I like this album exept for about 2 tracks, that Awkward Conversations one and the song about the bird. By the way Space Tech Bannana Clip uses a sample from good old Space Battleship Yamato aka (Star Blazers) and is also the best song on the album.

4 out of 5 stars Something new, interesting & definetly different.......2006-05-02

This record took me forever to get. Actually I'm still not sure if I "get" it, but when a record has rave reviews all over the net and I think it's bad I doubt myself just a little bit until I have listened to it to death. That being said I have been rocking this record in my MP3 player for a solid month and I am starting to see what those cats are talking about. But only sort of. Emcee Baje One and producer Snafu have a special chemistry here that really does seem kind of scientific, or maybe that's cause of the topics to rap about: Time travel, plutonium, liquefying ice, etc. Needless to say this album is a little different, but they do it well and with precision. Baje One is a solid emcee with a dope flow and a confidant swagger that is present in many NY representers. Snafu makes beats that bounce and weave around the lyrics usually with only one thing being steady: the dusty drums. At times comical they have created an album that is truly nerd rap, not because they are using big words but they literally are talking about things that my chemistry genius girlfriend would love. Not to say they don't get their straight up hip hop on either though. On "House Wigger" (14) they address those who may be posing as something they are not (and hip hop seems to be full of em). If you are looking for something a little different and fun this album is for you, just be prepared for something you have never heard and may never hear again. Junk Science = dopeness on record, it just takes forever to really sink in.

5 out of 5 stars Off the hook!.......2005-12-04

these kids definitely have something going here. fresh beats, simple, but intelligent lyrics, and style out the wazoo! I didn't know what to expect when I picked this one up on a friend's recommendation, actually I kind of hate the kid that told me to buy it, but now I'm glad I know that kid, cause he put me on to the coolest indie rap record of the year.

5 out of 5 stars This is album is not Junk.......2005-11-21

Junk Science's album lived up to all my expectations. The production is real percussive, and gritty, like 90's hip hop, not like all that synthy radio rap that seems like it's everywhere (and getting boring). Junk science's lyrics are straight forward, and sometimes really funny, but this isn't a comedy record, my favorites songs so far are "House Wigger" and "That's the Way", both songs that detail this dou's hard work to get as far as they have and some of the obstacles they had to get past.

5 out of 5 stars Some good hip hop.......2006-04-02

I bought this CD on a whim, I just saw him on the def jux site and I saw he was a korean so I orded the cd cause i was really curious. What a suprise, this cd is probably my favorite hip hop cd of 2005, even over Edan's Beauty and the Beat. Pete and the other guys use some cool samples on the beats and of course the drum tracks are simply flowin and each song has a great beat to it. Like the other guy said, even within certain songs he is switching the samples and drum tracks like 2-3 times. All the guest spots are good too, it all fits in nicely to this great cd. I really like Cool Calm Pete's delivery, it's just pleasing. Great debut, I can't wait to see more from this guy.

This is simply a wonderful cd. Completely agree with the other reviewer. If you haven't heard of Babbletron, do yourself a favor and give them a listen, some other unique hip hop artists to check out that you may not have heard of DarkLeaf and Bigg Jus. Highly Recommend This CD, very different than mainstream hip hop, almost jazzy.

Babbletron was no doubt a dope release from Pete & Co. but this steps it up to new level. With cool, calm and melodic beat production to accompany Pete's fluid lyrical rythm, you'll want to roll down the windows in the ride for this one. By track three you'll know exactly what I mean. Like the Babbletron release, these cats keep the whole project fresh while changing some beats up as many as three times on a single track. There is no point in trying to point out tracks that are better than others because on this release, there is something for everyone. Progressive, Original, and Dope: pick this one up. Peace.

4 out of 5 stars Design's for Def Jux/Should be singed to Def Jux.......2006-04-01

Hailing from NYC by way of Connecticut, Bisc1 is what you might expect out of the underground. He is an amalgamation of the Def Jux sound mixed with some of his own flavor thrown in their for good measure. Starting as a graf artist and currently doing design work for many independent labels (including Def Jux) Bisc has been perfecting his craft as an emcee for a minute. His beats are a mix of the original dusty boom bap drums with some of the new techno influences that can be found throughout many releases. As a lyricist Bisc does a good job on this EP showing us what he is about. Whether talking about all the pieces that it takes to live this culture on "Pieces" (4) or discussing the haters and how he has no time for `em on "Crumbs" (2) he know how to get his point across and flow to the beat in just such a way that his sound intrigues you and invites you in to listen closer. With only six tracks Bisc1 makes his intro to the world quick and to the point: He has his style and your gonna get with it or not. My suggestion peep him out and you will not be disappointed

Trevor Peres, Donald Tardy and Mitch Harris from Obituary and Napalm Death created this atmospheric, industrial , electronic, progressive and heavy masterpiece full of grey scenarios, relaxing environments and then loud explosions and raw guitars , they can be described like the Cocteau Twins of metal for moments , even in the exeptional artwork , Embedded is a genuine Oddity into Earaches catalog and hard to get in this days, im proud i own my copy

3 out of 5 stars Sea of Tranquility.......2003-07-30

Side projects are a bit of a mystery sometimes. It is understandable musicians may want a break from their main gig, and have the chance to create something different. Mike Patton and Jello Biafra for example have turned their hands to a number of projects over a wide range of musical styles. What is harder to understand though, from the perspective of someone not actually in the band, is why a band member would want to do something not far removed from their usual band's sound. Mitch Harris' impressive side project is within spitting distance of grind legends Napalm Death.

Meathook Seed's sound on 'Embedded' could best be described as a cross between Napalm Death and Godflesh (anyone with Attention Deficit Disorder can stop reading now because this is the most important point of the review). Think of half paced Napalm Death with a few heavy-duty industrial rhythms thrown in, or a faster Godflesh with more vocal variety and a real drummer thrown in from time to time.

The sound is huge, and it's not surprising. Harris' partners in noise were Donald Tardy and Trevor Peres from Obituary. The noise produced is tremendous, equal parts mountainous Death Metal and sludgy Grind. Overlaying the carefully calculated racket are tormented vocals, sometimes a shade Barney Greenway, other times Justin Broadrick.

The songs really do little to distinguish themselves from one another. That's not to say they all sound the same, but are of an equal standard, with none of the tracks noticeably better or more memorable than the others.

Closer "Sea Of Tranquillity" is the only real departure from the formula of rest of the album. It is a dark ambient/trance piece, incorporating celestial choirs, Gregorian chants, sampled drums, drones and other electronic wizardry.

'Embedded' is by no means essential or original. It is a powerful release, and most fans of Napalm Death and Godflesh would not think it out of place in their collections. However, they might not revisit it too often.

3 out of 5 stars interesting side project..........2000-07-17

As formed by members of Obituary and Napalm Death, Meathook Seed's first cd offers up an interesting, if unadventurous debut. Trevor Peres and Donald Tardy, Obituary's guitarist and drummer respectively, join forces with Napalm Death guitarist Mitch Harris in creating some deathly industrial/electronica soundscapes. Most of the songs sound like a mix of (what else?) Napalm Death and "Streetcleaner" era Godflesh, with a dose of hardcore riffing for attitude and a healthy dose of drum programs and electronic vocal distortions. Opening cut, "Famine Sector", is by far the best song on the disc; angry, aggressive and driving. The rest of the album angrily grooves along, with varying degrees of success. After awhile though, the songs start sounding samey, which is a given in this genre of music. Given the lack of diversity on the disc, it could quickly become tiring and well, downright boring if you aren't a dedicated fan of this type of aggro-industrialized death.

Despite its' short comings though, Meathook Seed's debut is worth owning, simply because it dares to be a bit different and not the same old death metal, especially with its' closing cut; a 13 minute wave of electronica, filled with landscapes of sounds and driven by a drum program/machine. Lots of experimentation and if you close your eyes, you can probably picture yourself in a distant land of sound (provided you use your headphones). In all, a decent debut. The band apparantly have a follow-up disc out. I for one, will be looking to obtain it.

      5 out of 5 stars Hats off!.......2002-10-28

Jan Narveson - University of Waterloo Gazette - October 12, 2002

Pianist Juana Zayas is unknown in these parts, and in her concert for the Chamber Music Society the question that immediately came to mind is, why?

In the short opening Romance in F# by Schumann, the warm, rich sounds she elicited from the KWCMS Steinway were altogether extraordinary, as was her evident feeling for this brief piece.

Without pausing for applause, she lit right into Schumann's Fantasy in C, a piece that has been played quite frequently here over the past few years. No one, however, has equaled, let alone exceeded, Ms. Zayas' account, with its splendid clarity at all volumes, its masterful handling of intricate passages, and above all, its conveying of a convincing account of this score.

The other masterpiece of the evening was Schubert's great final sonata in Bb, a work that has not been played as often hereabouts, but again, never played so convincingly. This performance struck us as generally magical. For one thing, it always managed to sing, be the song happy or sad, its surrounding material complex or simple, fast or slow.

For another, she has a wonderful way with rhythm, as in the scherzo that provides such strong contrast to the deeply felt slow movement; this had the needed spring and life, which is not a matter of velocity. And she managed to make the finale seem neither anticlimactic nor redundant. In a selection of encores too, by Chopin and Scarlatti, she demonstrated that she is not just another pianist, let alone some obscure unknown, but simply one of the greatest keyboard artists of our day.

      Hats off!

5 out of 5 stars Chopin played with wonderful skill, affection, and subtlety.......2002-06-26

I first became acquainted with the playing of Juana Zayes when I heard a radio broadcast in the early 1980's of a live all-Chopin recital that featured all the Etudes from Op.10 and Op.25 in addition to the second Sonata and the Andante Spianato and Grand Polonaise. Then a few years ago came the release of her recording of the Etudes and it immediately became my favorite of the many versions I have of these perennially challenging works. I am happy to report that this new recording of the two Chopin Sonatas and other works shows Ms. Zayes to be in top form, which means that she plays not just with masterful technique but also with great affection for the music, and with wonderful subtleties in voicing, tone, and phrasing. I have heard these works countless times and Ms. Zayes' performances are among my favorites, and a wonderful antitode for the sterile performances I am used to hearing from today's generation of pianists. High points for me are the Trois Nouvelles Etudes and the first movement of the great B minor Sonata. I recommend this recording very highly.

cipher method is the new full length cd from negative format. It is a journey into the dark recesses of the human mind, unlocking our encrypted thought patterns. cipher method was built with complex beat and rhythm structures, mixing negative format's trance melodies with dark atmospheric overtones, aand a mixture of vocoded and ebm vocal passages.

5 out of 5 stars Best Negative Format album yet.......2004-02-09

Whoever the fan from Seattle giving this masterful EBM album a low rating, needs to have his/her head checked, for there is nothing standard about this album even when compared to the other 3 Negative Format albums. That's right, this one is the fourth, not the 3rd full album put forth by Negative Format. More elements of trance abound in this album, with great synth looping, and a chameleon like way of blending into whatever environment you happen to be in at the time. A perfect fusion album. Definitely worth the money spent for it.

1 out of 5 stars Same Album #3.......2003-04-15

Just like Negative Format's first 2 albums, this new one is just the same song over & over & over again. The only difference this time is that the song titles are far more computer-geek related. Someone's been watching "The Matrix" & "Bladerunner" a little too often by the looks of it. The vocals are little more than cliche themed spoken word processed through lots of computer sounding distortion and no song has any obvious verse/chorus hook to it. This EBM band continues trying to convince people that it's Trance now, but that's not the case at all. Even the most generic instrumental Trance has more musical punch & catchiness to it than this does. If you enjoy unimaginative background music whipped up on a laptop computer, then you may like this. If you're looking for any sense of creation, structure or substance, skip it.

      5 out of 5 stars A whole new direction........2003-04-13

This entire album blew me away from start to finish. I loved their last album, but this one is just incredible. Some of the best beats and production arrangements I've heard in years of listening to music of this genre. Though that's hard to classify, because Negative Format may just create a genre of their own with this type of thing. Parts of it even sound like what might happen if a 'Beaucoup Fish'-era Underworld started experimenting with trance or darker electronic music, and parts of some songs even sound a little Aphex Twin influenced.

It's definitely a departure from "Distant Pulses". Granted, their sound is still very trancy and dark, but Alex Matheu takes EBM in a completely new direction with this one, adding spacy and trancy dance rhythms, and even throws in some breakbeat every once in awhile. It serves so many purposes. It's great driving music, great to sit back and relax to, and yes, you can dance to it too. I would call this album a journey into "all-purpose electronic music", because you can really listen to it anywhere and it'll have different effects on you depending on where you listen to it.

A must-have for any fan of EBM, electro, trance, or darkwave.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent addition to any industrial-head's collection.......2003-04-11

Negative Format is pure electro-industrial, and also blends a series of other electronic music styles into the formula. While the bulk of Cipher Method is high bpm beat-driven melodies, there are some features that seperate Negative Format from other bands in the genre. The vocals are slightly distorted, and tend to drone on robotically. This leads to lots of repetition in the songs, but it's also a very useful tool for conveying the technological theme of the lyrics. The music itself is also repetitve in regards, with synth-loops and sequences abound (definitely demonstrating some instrumental trance influences). So if you're looking for something that deviates from the militant electro sound of Funkervogt and :wumpscut:, or just want something a little lighter in the way of aggro-industrial music in general, Cipher Method is worth a listen.

5 out of 5 stars A New Era In Electronic Music.......2003-02-19

Wow. "Cipher Method" represents the very best of electro-industrial music. Its pounding beats and expertly produced, complex layering make it infectiously dancey, continuing in the direction of Tampa, Florida-based Negative Format's previous release, "Static." Perhaps not coincidentally, the change to a faster style coincides with NF starting its own label, Sector 9 Studios, which it shares with the yet faster and more aggressive God Module. I took the title of this review from the label's stated vision.

But while "Cipher Method" is much faster and more driven than pre-Static, ethereal, trancey Negative Format, it retains the outstanding complexity and fluency of NF's earlier material. The songs evolve down complicated, winding pathways, so that each one feels like a swiftly moving expedition through exotic, surprising soundscapes. The vocals, mostly distorted, center on a coherent theme throughout the album, of alienation from mainstream culture - which renders us mere ciphers - and a wistfulness for a more meaningful, individually defined reality. "I am not who I am supposed to be / I live with intuition / reminisce of another world..." The other world is conjured up in the music as well as the lyrics.

"Cipher," "Automate," "Transfer," "Senseless," "Static," and "Downfall" are all top-notch dance floor drivers, while "Schema," "Vertex," and "Encryption" are slightly more subdued, "Algorythm" shows a more drum-n-bass influence, and "Packet Filter" lets you cool off (relatively) at the end of the album with a reflective, instrumental salute to NF's ethereal roots.

On the whole, "Cipher Method" is most similar to Haujobb or the best of Informatik, down to the occasional, well-used spoken-word samples. "Cipher Method" also bears comparison to VNV Nation, but with a more negative outlook and with a consistency we all could only wish for on "Futureperfect." The comparison is far from coincidental, with the news that Negative Format and VNV Nation are collaborating, along with Icon of Coil, Covenant, and Apoptygma Berzerk, on the upcoming supergroup Bruderschaft, which promises to be the greatest electro collaboration since C-Tec.

      5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully relaxing.......2004-06-22

Loretta has produced a truly excellent aid to relaxation through conscious breathing and visual imagery. The recording goes a long way to creating the connection between Body, Mind and Spirit. I can truly say that this tape has taken me to levels of relaxation and well-being never before experienced. I do enjoy the soundtrack, too, that accompanies her well modulated voice and superimposed heartbeat. The technique is subtle and effective. I keep this tape in my portable tape recorder and use it at any time that I feel stressed or over-tired. I strongly recommend this recording to anyone who needs that stress relief that is so healing. The affirmations given at the end of the tape are well expressed and inspiring.
