Customer Reviews:
American national music as it should be heard!.......2006-06-28
Before adding my two cents, I read each of the several reviews already present. The one which comes closest, in my opinion, is that of Mr. Buursma, who notes the outstanding musical quality of this disk. Those who found it old-fashioned or not exciting enough we suspect would say the same about Beethoven's 9th or Mozart's Requiem. Flashy, it isn't; musically excellent it is!
I don't know what the reviewers mentioning the Mormon Tabernacle Choir had in mind. There is really no comparison between Shaw's singers and the massive, but less expressive, forces of that choir.
The late Robert Shaw was an unmatched phenomenon in choral music. He possessed an unfailing instinct and an impeccable taste in his musical leadership. And he carefully built up a group of singers to carry out his musical vision. We are more indebted to him than many apparently realize. No matter; time will bear out his musical worth, and he will still be appreciated by generations yet unborn.
The dangers in "patriotic" music are flashiness, over-emphasis on martial qualities, and generally "sound and fury signifying nothing." Those characteristics are totally alien to Shaw's musical nature, though he does, of course, realize the need to communicate the musical message effectively.
As to him who felt a Sousa approach would be more fitting, I ask what he thinks the song America The Beautiful is about. It is far more a poem or even a hymn than a battle song. Even the Battle Hymn of the Republic is as much hymn as battle cry.
I hope this CD is never allowed to go out of print. I doubt if it will ever be superseded, despite its 1962 sound. It is, quite simply, the best version you will find of most, if not all, the songs included here.
Patriotic Songs As They Should be Performed!.......2005-11-02
I am a devotee of this genre and The Robert Shaw Chorale does each song justice. This album (note my age, it is a CD!) makes my chest swell with pride. Being a Civil War buff, I found the many songs of that conflict to be an added treat. If you appreciate this type of music you should certainly buy this record. (old guy again...CD!)
Excellent choral CD.......2005-10-16
Battle Cry Of Freedom is an excellent choral CD by the Robert Shaw Chorale !
A good performance of Robert Shaw Chorale.......2005-06-24
When you read the back cover, you note that the original recording was done in 1962. It does not look like that. The sound is still perfect, the songs are very well sung, it is easy to sing along and, more generally, the voices of the singers of the Robert Shaw Chorale are always excellent. For me, it is a good CD and you may buy it in full confidence.
For traditionalists, this is hard to beat..........2004-12-10
If you want a CD with the most popular patriotic or military anthems on it, performed in classic formal style by great artists, varied because it features not only a mixed chorus of men and women, but soloists and a symphony orchestra too, buy this one before it goes out-of-print. First issued in 1962, this disc features not only "America" and "God Bless America" and "America the Beautiful" but also a stirring long version of "Battle Hymn of the Republic." Less familiar is "Columbia the Gem of the Ocean", which I've always liked. It closes with "The Star-Spangled Banner" of course. Inbetween is a great version of "Yankee Doodle" and a Civil War medley which offers not just songs from the righteous Union side, but a few from the traitorous Confederacy, too. There is also a medley of the armed forces anthems for the Marines, the Navy, the Air Force and the Army. I purchased this recently as a Christmas gift for my mother-in-law, who is 81, was a young bride with an Air Force husband during World War II, and is as conservative a Christian as any good Southern Baptist can be. I hope she'll like it, even though country and western music from the '40's and '50's is her special thing. If you have a desire to have these kind of songs in your collection, the Robert Shaw outfit does them in high style and you'll likely be happy with this CD.

If you think the percussionist's role is merely to supply rhythmic backbone, you haven't encountered the phenomenon named Evelyn Glennie. The category-defying Scottish musician has spent her career pursuing the unique route of percussion virtuoso, turning music into an intensely hyperactive verb. Glennie's sound world encompasses a global, pan-cultural panoply of music makers in addition to the standard drum kit: watergongs, bamboo sticks, ceramic bells, car exhaust pipes, finger cymbals, thundersheet--to name a few from the arsenal she uses here (Glennie reportedly owns over 1,000 percussive instruments). Even in her interpretations of works by other composers--such as James MacMillan's Veni, Veni, Emmanuel or the Grammy-nominated Concerto for Percussion by Joseph Schwantner--Glennie scoops out plentiful opportunities for improvisation; but the concept of Shadow Behind the Iron Sun was to allow Glennie to lock herself up in her studio and improvise the entire album. With the help of her collaborator, pop mixmaster Michael Brauer, the result is a fantastically textured, mesmerizing adventure for the ears and the imagination. Despite a vague ambition to explore "as many moods as possible" (Michael Crichton's Eaters of the Dead was apparently the source for some of the picturesque titles here, such as "Attack of the Glow Worm" and "Wind Horse"), the variety and juxtaposition of colors evoke a cinematically gripping, almost synesthetic sense of atmosphere--yet another evolution of "program music" into the 21st century? Much of the fun is in experiencing sounds whose origin remains mysterious, as Glennie performs her one-woman-as-orchestra wonders. --Thomas May
Customer Reviews:
music i hear with my body .......2005-03-09
I love this album!!! Evelyn Glennie is the most profound percussionist I have ever heard. Her music penetrates my body: sometimes I feel it in my heart, sometimes in my solar plexis. I feel it in my soul. This album can be enjoyed over and over and over. Thank You Evelyn Glennie! Big Gratitude!
Beyond Belief.......2004-06-16
I went to a solo concert of hers because I had heard what I thought must be hype of her wonder. I was totally and utterly destroyed by her performance. She has complete technical perfection, tremendous athletic ability (yes percussion demands of the body), personal charm, and dramatic zest. Many of the albums I listened to after disappointed me because she clearly held herself within the strict measure of the others she performed with. I suspect her deafness makes her fearful of any rubatto in an orchestral setting. This album is the only one that begins to give a sense of her god-like gifts.
You don't listen to it, you experience it.......2001-03-01
This CD is a true experience, similar to Charles Ives' "New England Holidays". The range of instruments Glennie uses and creates brings to mind Mickey Hart's statement about drummers being desperate and doing anything to produce sounds. Her music gets into your mind and body. It's appealing enough that my son, a rap fan, sat fascinated while "Land of Venden" was playing. His comment, "This is almost scary!", leads to my opinion that her talent is almost scary. Do yourself a favor and buy this one, it provides great mental and emotional rejuvenation.
Something a little different.......2000-09-23
Even if percussion sans so-called melodic instruments isn't what you think of when selecting a cd you've got to listen to this. Ms Glennie creates quite a melodic and dramatic tapestry and draws the listener right into the middle of it. Yes, it does take a few listenings to penetrate to the gist of it but that only enhances the genuine beauty contained here. Perhaps that is a given in any deeply creative work.
A near-perfect album.......2000-04-08
Even my dog liked it -- mesmerized by the music, staring at the stereo like the mutt in the RCA logo.
Solo percussion is, admittedly, an acquired taste. The song samples here give you a reasonable flavor of the album. If you don't like them, don't buy it.
At the same time, Glennie has done more than anybody to advance the art, the possibilities, and the popularity of percussion. (I saw her perform a snare solo encore last year that brought the audience to its feet.) In this album, she operates with more freedom and pushes more boundaries than in anything she's done to date. Yet it's still an approachable and genuinely exciting collection of music.

amazing!!.......2007-04-11
When I first listened to this album, I was so moved! This CD is worth buying just for the song Forevermore. The way Michael Gungor's voice builds as he talks about God...wow. It's amazing, just like all the other songs!
GREAT WORSHIP MUSIC.......2006-05-31
We bought this CD after seeing The Michael Gungor Band perform at Aquire the Fire last year. We love it. The Band sings for all ages. I recomend you not only purchase the CD but also, if you get a chance, see them live. It will truely touch you.
Energizing music to launch your soul!.......2006-03-28
Just heard Michael Gungor at the San Francisco Battle Cry Stadium Event. Awesome!! The song "Battle Cry" was so energizing. Imagine 25,000 people singing it at the top of their lungs in SBCPark!! This is my new theme song! The full CD is a great mix of worship songs. This is a keeper!
Awesome.......2006-03-14
I saw Michael Gungor band at ATF in Tampa this past weekend. They are an incredible worship band. You need to get the CD for yourself, a friend both Christian ,non Christian. This music will transform your life. I had not heard of Michael Gungor previously now I cannot play it enough. Don'tmiss his band live when you get a chance.
Pretty good worship album.......2005-10-18
Maybe im a little biased because Michael Gungor is the worship leader at my church. But The album is a great live worship album. Pretty Original and songs arent sappy cliche worship songs. My favorite song would have to be "Im Free".

Outstanding Performance and Collection of Songs.......2006-03-29
I am impressed with the quality of the Gramercy Brass Ensemble's performance of these traditional American Patriot pieces.
Beautiful sound, outstanding musicianship, classic yet spirited arrangements, and wide variety from national anthems to branch-specific armed forces hymns.
I would recommend this recording to anyone looking to hear American Patriotic music at its best. A very nice CD.
Great Patriotic CD.......2004-02-21
This is a great CD if you ever need or want to have patriotic music. American music played by an American brass band. This group sounds terrific. For those of you unfamiliar with brass band, it is comprised of 25 brass players and 2 or 3 percussionists. You get a rich, full sonority and these guys play GREAT! This CD is HIGHLY recommended to all bras players who want to hear tone quality, timbre, intonation, and more. Band directors would be wise to use this as a model for their students for everything from pitch to phrasing. Everybody else would be wise to pick it up if you like Americana. I know people who use this for their commute because it is upbeat and uplifting. Excellent CD!!!! You may also want to check out their second CD entitled "Christmas Time Is Here". Also highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:
A very good CD to buy.......2005-07-06
I have bought many CD regarding American patriotic songs but it is the one that I prefer. The songs are sung in a very classic way and so, there are easy to listen. Jon English as a tenor gives an excellent performance. On the piano, Rob Carriker gives also an excellent performance; he does not try to cover the voice of Jon English but just to support his voice. So, Jon English and Rob Carriker form a very fine duo and the quality of recording is excellent. The choice of songs is also excellent. I strongly recommend this CD.
What an Excellent Work of Art!.......2002-08-30
John English has a booming and resounding voice. Well suited for the rough and tough songs of our countries historic wars. It is an excellent buy, and I recommend it to any fans of great songs and American historics!
Excellent!.......2002-08-30
This cd is excellent! I reccomend it to everyone!! Jonathon English has got an amazing voice!
What A Blast - A Fun and Inspiring CD.......2002-07-30
I have to admit - I didn't know what I'd be getting when I bought this album. I love Americana and have known some of these songs all my life: K-K-K-Katy, Keep the Home-Fires Burning, and Tenting on the Old Camp Ground. Others that are listed I had never heard before: The Soldier's Tear, When Alexander Takes His Ragtime Band to France, and the very funny Captain Jinks! From first to last I found this CD a joy to hear. Jon English has a beautiful voice, and he sings with such clarity that you can understand every word! There are songs that will get your feet taping, and others that will bring a tear to your eye. The chorus is quite obviously not a professional choir, and that's all the better! They sing with an infectious energy and spirit that'll make you want to sing along. Add into that the horns, flute and percussion and this album becomes very pleasant experience. This is one of the best CD's I've heard in a long time, and I heartily recommend it.

Authenric Music with traditional instruments........2000-09-17
For those of you who enjoy the music, as it was sung and played during the Civil War, this recording is a "must!" J.A. McA.
Living history.......1999-07-31
So shoot me. I like bagpipe music and I like fife and drum recordings and I like brass bands. Recently cruisin' the Internet brought me to the website of a company called Summit Records out in Arizona; and my eye was caught by the title
(DCD 126) with a group calling itself The Americus Brass Band. I obtained a copy post haste and I want to all to know about it with equal rapidity. There is just short of 55 minutes of Civil War tunes played in a style that is "historically accurate, right down to the high military pitch and the clicking of the rotary valves on the original antique instruments employed" (as the notes tell us). The history of the band is available in those notes, so let me just dwell on the "music that still produces feelings of humor, joy, sadness, and patriotic pride." Well, what music does not produce at least one of those?--and I am not entirely sure there was anything about the Civil War of which we on either side should be particularly proud. But Sing a Song of Suffering seems to be an eternal way of making the best of a rotten situation during war time; and this CD is replete with such memories as "Tenting Tonight," "Amazing Grace," "Woodman, Spare That Tree," and even a little bit of the "William Tell Overture" and a Meyerbeer opera! In short, this is not the expected line up of soldier songs but selections that are "typical of that which might have been played by a group such as the Americus Brass band." I love it. Give it a try, please.

not to great.......2007-04-04
We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.
Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22
I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.
You get what you pay for........2004-07-04
You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.
Now I know why there were no song samples to listen to ..........2004-07-04
I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

INCREDIBLE.......2003-10-09
I have several albums of Ryan Kisor but Battle Cry is the best of them because the supporting cast of Sam Yahel, Peter Bernstein and Brian Blade are amazing - swinging like crazy plus the album has a really good vibe which puts you in a good mood. Ryan Kisor has to be one of the hippest trumpet players in the world today.

battle cryyyyyyyy.......2007-03-10
an amazing album that keeps you on headbanging mode from start to end. for classic fans of 80's heavy metal, this is a must in your collection. unique vocals and great playing from every member of the band. a good blend of maiden and early fates warning. i'm a huge fan of singers with high pitch but for jd kimball who happens to be of a low register, he mesmerised me with his talent. hear his battle cry.
Hear ye battle cry!.......2005-07-05
Pretty good stuff you got there! Omen's first album is diversified, smooth but real good Heavy Metal. Sounds a bit like Iron Maiden (Piece of mind album) but Omen truly found it's own way and put itsef apart. Hard but harmonious riffs, good solos from Kenny Powell, the last song "In the arena" is the highlight of this album - overall a true classic!
Advice: Get yourself up to a good start, listen to the title track at first. Second advice: If you enjoy this first album, get yourself "Warning of danger" and "The curse" as well. You won't be dissapointed since they're both even better than the first.
An All Time Classic.......2000-12-10
Omen was one of these bands which came up during the 80's with some great power metal albums. Especially this first one "Battle Cry" is great. There is not much to say about it, if you like power metal you should simply hear it and you will love it! Also the next albums were great but don't burn your fingers on "Escape To Nowhere" if you can get it, because it simply is terribly bad! Battle Cry is one more legendary classic album
how metal is played.......2000-09-07
omen plays straight ahead metal. i hope they come back together and make a new album.
Finest Heavy Metal.......1999-07-09
Omen is one of those 80's Metal bands that came up with enough fury, good sound and excelent lyrics. If you're a serious Heavy Metal collector, this Album will be one of your favorites.

Bellini and Wagner may seem like a musical odd couple, but the pairing makes sense since Italian bel canto formed one of the streams that fed the tumultuous torrent of Wagnerian music drama. Jane Eaglen's sumptuous dramatic soprano is a throwback to rare prima donnas of the past who excelled in the music of both composers although, like them, she possesses a voice whose size and amplitude often defeat the microphone's ability to capture it with realism. Still, there's much to admire, including the sheer novelty of so sizeable a voice negotiating Bellini's fragile lines and the sheer beauty of much of the singing. However, despite some thrilling whoops and hollers in Brünnhilde's battle cry from Die Walküre, impact is dimmed by a hint of interpretive blandness, routine orchestral accompaniments, and, especially in Bellini, a rhythmic slackness. An important, if flawed, document of one of the great voices of our age. --Dan Davis

Stunning.......2007-07-16
Bellini and Wagner at their Best
I was just listening to The Immonlation Scene in gotterdammerung and teared up
Jane Eaglen is absolutley brilliant
Vocally secure but no Maria Callas.......2006-05-27
My husband & I find it impossible not to admire Ms. Eaglen's tonal beauty, her ease of production. How difficult this music is, and how one must have to love it to pieces to dare approach it. But after listening to the Pirata piece (Col sorriso d'innocenza) three times in succession, we brought out Callas, for *dramatic* coloratura---sung with accents, layers of meaning, exquisite rhythm, and musical and dramatic momentum. One one hand, a scene; on the other, a entire panorama of sound and meaning...
But we sense that Ms. Eaglen has the capability to fine-tune. We'd feel we'd be foolish to give up on her, so we shall not. By any rational standard, she is a rarity in today's age, thus not to be dismissed out-of-hand. Also, she deserves better conductors, who will keep her voice "out front". Is there a Tullio Serafin lurking in the house?
Exceptional.......2005-07-20
I will openly admit I do enjoy Jane Eaglen's sing, but I have had many reservations about her recordings. Though I enjoy them, each has disappointed me in some way. This is no exception. It is not her, nor is it her singing that really disappoint me at all, it is how her voice is handled by the recording engineers. There are complaints that her performances are "boring", "liveless", that they lack "drama" and all that. The truth is, in life that is not the case at all. She is filled with drama, life, and detailed interpretation. A voice like her's is exceptionally large and huge, like a tidal wave of sound. However, she has great musicality, has great command of dynamics, and does do many interesting things to make the character come alive. She also has good pitch.
Like all super large voices, especially those in a darker hue, as is Eaglen's, the voice can and often does sound boring and expressionless in recording. The thrill of the voice comes when you are out there, in the theatre. Since, her voice is rather dark in quality, the brightness it seems is so required by techical engineers to work magic in the recording studio gets lost. Her voice is very penitrating, it has ring, but we get only a small glimpse of that, and only on her high notes.
That complaint is my complaint dealing with all her recordings. As to her interpretations, well, they are uniquely her. No, she is not a Callas, nor is she a Joan Sutherland, when it comes to her NORMA. Her coloraturas don't dazzle us with their brilliance, nor does she squeeze out her sound with some intended dramatic purpose as Callas does. However, she has just as much musicality as either of those ladies. Their interpretations are legend, and they should be, but Eaglen isn't trying to copy either of them, and I am glad she isn't. Her NORMA in performance has much to recommend it, as it does in this recording, but it has to be looked at for what it is and the voice that is doing it. Her voice is far bigger than either of the afore mentioned ladies. Her tone is cavernous. The voice is a heavy dramatic voice, well suited to Wagner. What is amazing is not what she lacks compared to the coloratura of Sutherland, but rather what she can do with a voice large and powerful as Flagstad. And that is what most reviewers are forgetting. Even Nilsson was not that great at coloratura and could often sound heavy and over-labored in Mozart and even Weber. One hardly reads a complaint about her Donna Anna or even her version of "ocean, you mighty monster" from Oberon (sung in German), nor does one hear the slightest complaint about her lack of trill in the Walkure war cry.
Eaglen is not perfect, but she does wonders with her talent. Her colorature is far better than just respectable, it is fine work, especially considering the heaviness of the voice producing it. Her Mozart is well sung, but again, she is not the light delicate Mozart singer we are used to, and it is wise she never tried to make her voice do what it can't or be what it is not. She is a dramatic soprano, and thus, she approaches her music faithful to what she is, and using her talent then creates something wonderful with the music she is singing. Her Wagner is thrilling and we are hearing the voice perfectly at home. No, she is not as detailed in her interpretation as say Modl or even Varney, but she is offering us a living breathing Brunhilde well worth considering. And she offers what none of the afore mentioned singers offered in the Walkure War Cry, a real trill. Though, personally, I am not impressed with the "stressing" of the beat that is done to keep the long trill moving. It is distracting, but not bad.
My only desire is that the engineers would do with her as they do to Dimitrova, and that is to record her voice far away from the mike; like Dimitrova, her voice is huge enough it will never be lost, but we will get more of the focus, the warmth, and the fire that is there in performance (and all one has to do is buy a copy of a life performance of her's to her what her voice is like). Voices like this get only more exciting when they have the space of the theatre in which to move. Otherwise, yes, she does sound "boxed in" as some writers have said, but not boxed in because of lack of talent or direction, just by technical issues she is not in control of.
Disapointed.......2005-07-16
When I first bought this recording I was very impressed by Eaglen singing of Bellini and Wagner. But after listening to singers as Callas, Sutherland, Nilsson she sounds inadequate.
I don't no why she thinks she can pull this off. The person who wrote that Eaglen's Norma was the best must be out his mind.
I whas also stupid enough to buy her recording of Turandot. Eaglen and O'neil both sound awful on that recording. The only Eaglen recording I can recommend is her Tosca. Forget everything else.
Not Whitney Houston.......2005-02-10
The British soprano Jane Eaglen has chosen selections from Bellini and Wagner for her first recording, and what an amazing CD this is. Apparently there isn't much she isn't capable of doing with this glorious voice. From pianissimo high notes to the dramatic, her voice soars and swells. All the arias here are altogether wonderful-- from "Casta diva" to "Brunnhilde's Battle Cry" and "Brunnhilde's Immolation Scene," the first Wagner, according to the notes, that Mr. Eaglen sang in public while still in her early 20's.
The notes, both about the singer and the selections, are most informative. Quoting from her commentary: "Wagner wrote dramatic music that should be sung beautifully and Bellini wrote beautiful music that should be sung dramatically." And finally, when Ms. Eaglen began her first voice lessons while still a teenager, she realized immediately, to her everlasting credit, that she wasn't a pop singer. "There was no way I could make myself sound like Whitney Houston," she says. While there is certainly nothing wrong with Houston's voice-- some of her music I like a great deal-- we can all be thankful that this great voice wasn't wasted on pop music.
This very fine CD will bring you much pleasure.
