5 out of 5 stars FAR Better Than World Wide Live.......2007-07-13

While I'm not the biggest Scorps fan, I really like this a lot. You can hear that the band is having a blast. The sound is very good and balanced, and the performance is intense. Sad for me to say that I never checked out their early (pre-Mattias Jabs)material--and it's my loss--when it was first released. Now that I have, I can honestly say I like the early stuff better. This one's hard to get tired of and is becoming one of my favorite live albums. Get it, at least, to hear Uli Jon Roth tear it up.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent live performance........2007-06-04

This is the perfect example of the level of live performances that the Scorpions have. Always very appealing to the ears. Klaus Meine's voice is so full of strenght and class. We'll Burn the Sky is a Master Piece.

5 out of 5 stars Scorpions Rock!!.......2007-02-21

I love this album, but I must say that I do not like one thing about the CD release: It does not contain "POLAR NIGHTS", a song with Uli Jon Roth on vocals! I had (and still have) the original double album and POLAR NIGHTS is on the album, but not the CD. WHAT HAPPENED TO IT? IS IT AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD SOMEWHERE?

This album captures the Scorpions before they hit big in the States, although San Antonio, Texas rock station KISS (RIP, Joe Anthony)was playing Scorpions music for quite some time. I was 13 or 14 when I first heard of the Scorpions and this was the first stuff I ever heard from them and I was BLOWN AWAY! Almost 30 years later, this stuff STILL blows me away!

Uli Jon Roth has obvious Hendrix influences, as evidenced in his playing, but is no copycat. He holds his own quite well and is a genuine pleasure to listen to! Klaus used to scream back then and sounded awesome and, in my humble opinion, never quite sounded that good again (after the Lovedrive album), with the "Lovedrive" album having that same type of scream from his vocals. The rest of the band sounds very good and I am finally happy to have added this to my CD collection, but the only thing that could beat it would be a DVD video of this performance or anything else from that era, if it exists.

However, one of the most interesting things about the album is the cover, specifically, the guitar player's feet (can't really tell who it is, maybe Rudolph Schenker?)! I showed it to my 12 year old daughter and she said "COOL!"

What more can I say? If you don't have it, then get it!

5 out of 5 stars crazy cool german rock, don't be afraid........2007-01-17

Do youself a favor and get into some 70's era Scorpions. It's heavy, it's spacey, it's groovy, it's German, and it's obscure as hell. Really cool stuff. The guitar playing is absolutely mindblowing.

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic Musicianship, Not Bad Live Sound.......2006-12-23

I walked into Mother's Records in Winnipeg in late 1978 ready to buy Kiss Alive II, but hesitated when I heard a new, different live album playing through the store speakers. This was the first time I had ever heard of Scorpions, let alone their music, and I was quickly absorbed by the album. Suffice to say I left the store with `Tokyo Tapes' rather than the album I had come to purchase.

Scorpions had yet to reach star status internationally, but in Japan, the second largest musical market in the world, the band were already legitimate superstars. Following the release of `Taken By Force', it was only natural that Scorpions would tour Japan. The response of the fans, plus the sheer energy coming off the stage, prompted the group to record two sessions at Budokhan (only days after Cheap Trick's recordings), and those recordings became `Tokyo Tapes'.

If you don't have any early Scorpions, this could serve as a worthy introduction. They hit all the high points of their first four albums (excluding `Lonesome Crow'), as well as throwing in a few covers (unneccesary, in my opinion), and winning the crowd even more with their rendition of the Japanese folk song, "Kojo No Tsuki". Even though the sound quality is at times muddled, what shines through is the musicianship. Klaus Meine is on his game, the rythym section thunders, Rudolf Schenker shows adept ability, but it's Uli Jon Roth's virtuoso, and at times otherworldly playing that is the highlight here. His performance alone is worth the price of the album - check out the playing on "Robot Man" and "We'll Burn The Sky" and you'll see what I mean. This is the last Scorpions album of any sort that Roth plays on, and his departure and subsequent addition of Mattias Jabs clearly defines the "old" Scorpions sound and "new", cleaner Scorpions sound.

This double-CD from Washington State's legendary Brothers Four captures the group doing what they do best: performing on stage. Recorded live in Tokyo over the course of two days in 1996, the celebrated folk group, whose heyday was in the late 1950s and early '60s, spiritedly perform classics, a few somber ballads, and no fewer than five medleys (the best being the Man of La Mancha synopsis and the patriotic "American Medley"). Though it's a live recording, the Japanese audience at this hootenanny remains respectful and the sound quality is superb. Whether it's bluegrass ("Whiskey in the Jar"), Gordon Lightfoot's "Early Morning Rain" or the moving "Seven Daffodils," the Brothers Four prove that they belong in the forefront of the wholesome folk movement, where harmonies and a positive message are valued over controversial politics and self-righteousness. --Jason Verlinde

5 out of 5 stars Acoustic paradise.......2006-05-15

I just received this album, and I have to agree with the other reviewers: it's excellent! Many say that The Brothers Four have improved tremendously over the decades, and I can see why. While I don't think they are better now (they've always sounded great to me, and whatever prejudices I may have as to what folk music should be, these are probably not the norm), this live album shows exactly why they're still so loved across the world. Apart from their wonderful performances, they joke in Japanese and treat the audience to some breathtaking instrumental fun. They generate a warm, hearty atmosphere while remaining careful about their music, even after so many years.

5 out of 5 stars The Brothers Four do a music tour of Sixties folk music.......2003-08-22

"The Tokyo Tapes" is a 1996 concert recording of the Brothers Four, the folk group that first emerged at the end of the 1950s. Although they were often dismissed as an imitation Kingston Trio, the Brothers Four were actually singing professionally before the more famous folk group. Actually, they were fraternity brothers at Phi Gamma Delta at the University of Washington and a practical joker at another fraternity had a girl call them up to convince the boys they had an audition at a Seattle club, the Colony Club. The owner ended up letting them sing and they ended up with a gig that lasted about a year while they honed their vocal style and got paid off in free beer (great story, huh?).

Now only two of the original quartet remain, Bob Flick and John Paine, joined by Terry Lauber and Mark Pearson (who does most of the arranging), which explains why you will not find a whole lot of overlap between these songs and what the Brothers Four recorded on their live recordings from the early 1960s. You will find their two biggest "hits," with "The Green Leaves of Summer" and "Greenfields," but also a lot of other folk hits from that period, such as "Where Have All the Flowers Gone," "500 Miles," "Scarlet Ribbons," and "Michael Row the Boat Ashore." My favorite parts are the medleys, especially the first one, "The Railroad Medley," which brings together "City of New Orleans," "Wabash Cannonball," "This Train," and "Rock Island Line." There is also a "Bluegrass Medley" (which includes "Foggy Mountain Breakdown," "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" and "Darlin' Corey"), a "Man of La Mancha Medley," "American Medley," "Calypso Medley," and even an "Old-Time Banjo Medley."

The result is that this 2-disc album has a lot more songs than the 24 tracks you will find here. The chief attraction of "The Tokyo Tapes" is that these songs come from all of the great folk artists of the period, from Woody Guthrie, Gordon Lightfoot, and Bob Dylan to the Weavers, the Kingston Trio, and Peter, Paul & Mary. Since hearing a song by one of these artists tends to put you in the mood to hear some songs by some of the others, this works out pretty well. This is a wonderful folk music concert album. I wish I had stumbled across it earlier.

5 out of 5 stars Brothers Four shine in Japan.......1999-12-18

This 2cd set is probably the best work ever put out by the Brothers Four. They started out BIG in Japan, and are now still very big in Japan. The sound quality is superb, making you feel entirely surrounded by the distinctive sound of their voices. The beautiful ballads, like "Seven Dafodils" and "500 Miles" are hypnotic, and the medleys are tremendous. Their talent really comes to a fruition on this recording as their singing and playing of instruments has never been better. Inside is probably the best fan letter any group or artist could want.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of Scorpions in the 70's.......2006-10-07

This one-disc edition of Tokyo Tapes does not contain the song "Polar Nights" which was featured in the original 2-disc release. Still, their best live performances are rendered in this sublime album. You will be able to hear Klaus Meine sing as well as former guitarist Uli Jon Roth at his best. The only song I would have wanted them to include is "The Sails of Charon" instead of those rock & roll songs ("Hound Dog", "Long Tall Sally"). I widely recommend this album for either die-hard or fair-weathered fans.

5 out of 5 stars Simply marvellous!.......2002-10-15

The Scorpions blast out their talent in this concert. The last concert of the Uli-era (sadly, but true) has been recorded in this CD and the result is... I just cannot rate it. Live songs as "All Night Long", "Dark Lady" and "Fly To The Rainbow" seem to blow up your brain. You can only listen to this record (and the others like Fly To The Rainbow, In Trance, Virgin Killer and Taken By Force) and lament what the Scorps turned out to be after Uli left the band. I consider this and Queen's "Live Killers" the two best live albums ever.

5 out of 5 stars Rock Solid Performance.......2002-10-07

The Scorpions original live album and the final recording with Ulrich Roth, is a blistering concert with fine performances by all. Klaus Meine sings perfectly, the bass and drums are solid, Rudolph Schenker's rythm guitar is driving, and Ulrich Roth plays searing leads. A great band delivers another first rate performance. Sound quality is also good. All Scorpions fans will want this. One of rocks finest live albums.

5 out of 5 stars The Classic "Tokyo Tapes" Live Album Now Remastered!.......2002-08-23

I originally bought this as a two cd set back in the late 80's. For 2001 the entire performance is on a single cd and has been remastered for improved sound. This classic live performance by The Scorpions includes all their hits from their RCA years such as "Speedy's Coming", "Pictured Life", "Steamrock Fever", "In Trance",etc. plus a song from their "Lonesome Crow" album. Also, you get their renditions of "Hound Dog", "Long Tall Sally" and a Japanese song called "Kojo No Tsuki". The group sounds identical to their studio work and both vocalist Klause Meine and guitarist Ulrich Roth sound fantastic. Roth's guitar playing is especially impressive with the unique sound he creates. The only song missing from the original "Tokyo Tapes" is "Polar Nights" which is available on the "Taken By Force" remastered cd as a bonus track. This live cd ranks right up their with UFO's "Stranger's In The Night" and Pat Traver's "Live... Go For What You Know" cd's. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars You need this CD.......2002-05-15

This is one of the best live concerts on CD,... #2 in my mind, behind UFO's "Strangers in the Night".
Listening to this for the first time in years brought back some wonderful memories.

5 out of 5 stars Most Killer one oddball.......2002-03-22

This was recorded in 1978, and there are those Linkin Park new metal type kids who will dismiss it as too old. Bad move, the Scorps kicked butt big time in Tokyo and this is one of the classic live albums, anybody who likes music LOUD will love this.
The oddball I refer to is "Kojo No Tsuki" the Japanese fans liked this traditional folk song, but everybody I know finds it odd and out of place.

5 out of 5 stars Firth of Fifth Blistering Solo.......2004-04-19

Surperb...you must own this if your a Genesis, Crimso of Asia fan. The best "In the Court" (sorry /21st Century Schizoid Band) live or otherwise, Chester on Drums dups Giles. Then there's my favorite guitar solo ever, Firth of Fifth. The first time I heard this on the Selling England album it became my favorite, then on the Live album, better still, then live, better again and here on The Tokyo Tapes, the best ever. Los Endos, Hierophant, watcher and Wetton's Heat of the Moment (acoustic/solo). Some Hackett acoustic/classical. Great!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Pure Hackett - Honest Rock.......2003-11-30

This live album from Steve Hackett, remind us about some monolithic gemstones of 70's & 80's Prog Rock. The guest musicians add a kind of "jam-session" dressing. In few words, a very good work from one the ever best 6 and 12 string acoustic guitar players. And if you're a Genesis or King Crimson fan, this double-disc album is a very good acquisition for your collection. Good music for every hour!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing live treatments from Hackett & band.......2003-11-14

A friend of mine returned from England with this double CD of Hackett's performance in Japan as a gift. Except for an overly long drum solo on one of the tracks, this double-disc set is one that you can play several times in a row without getting tired of the material. I personally love the sweeping, orchestral feeling of the majority of the songs, and it is the best version of "Watcher of the Skies" I've ever heard. The mix of band members from various prog groups is top notch. This was my first introduction to Hackett after his departure from Genesis, and I've been trying to find albums that match up to it in intensity. This is definitely one of my all-time top favorite "desert island" discs.

5 out of 5 stars Vintage Genesis-style, both old and new. Great!.......1999-03-15

If progressive rock is your interest, Steve Hackett's Tokyo tapes session is a must. The band is fantastic (members are a surprise!), and if you have any musical instinct at all, you will love at least 70% of this work. Just buy it!

4 out of 5 stars The real spirit of Genesis went with Steve Hackett!.......2001-01-02

If ever there was proof that Genesis lost their way with the departure of Steve Hackett this album is it. A mix of original Genesis tracks, with subsequent compositions by Steve Hackett plus offerings from Ian MacDonald and John Wetton make this a great album. Furthermore, for a live album its largely flawless (although a couple of the distorted vocals don't quite come off -hence only four stars). Five superb musicians displaying their art to the max!

Compare this with Genesis' Archive #2 and you can see where they went wrong and what is missing from that box set. Power to your elbow, Steve Hackett!

    5 out of 5 stars ITS GREAT!.......2000-09-13

i bought this cd back in january of this year, (i'm still listening to it!)

MAN IT ROCKS, the best collection of genesis, steve hackett, king crimson, and john wetton! i fully recommend this cd, its very good and very irresistable.

its a definite must have for progressive rock fans!

5 out of 5 stars Great live CD set.......2000-09-03

I'm a long time genesis fan and liked, but not loved Steve Hackett. This CD however, was excellent. Without doubt the best live cd I own. There is some eclectic stuff on here but the mix is great, audio quality of fabulous and just plain nice to listen to. The Wetton cuts are great--I love the acoustic versions of his songs--not to mention the great renditions of some classic Genesis and King Crimson cuts. I'd buy it again in a second!

4 out of 5 stars Some really good stuff.......2000-07-18

This is Genesis's answer to Ring Starr's All-Starr Band. To support his Genesis Revisted CD, Steve Hackett pulled together this group for a mini tour. It features Ian McDonald, one of the founders of King Crimson and Foriegner (talk about different muscial styles), Chester Thompson, who was played with nearly everyone, including Zappa, Weather Report and Genesis, John Wetton from the 70's King Crimson, UK and Asia and Julian Colbeck, originally from the bad pop group Charlie, but who also played on some Hackett albums and one version of Yes.

This double CD has about one CD's worth of five star material and some less successful material. It starts out with another unnecessary version of the tedious "Watcher of the Skies" and then goes to a mediocre Hackett solo number. But next there is a fantastic version of "Firth of Fifth" that starts out slowly but then breaks into a new and interesting instrumental interlude. There's a few more mediocre Hackett solo numbers and a horrible Wetton solo song. There is a fair version of "In the Court of the Crimson King". Wetton does an acoustic version of the Asia hit "Heat of the Moment". It is the best version I have heard of any Asia song, but it still isn't that good.

After "Heat of the Moment", the live material really takes off. It is mostly Hackett material, but there are two Genesis tunes and a great "I Talk to the Wind". The addition of McDonald on sax and flute is amazing. He adds new dimensions to these songs and sounds as if he has been playing these songs all his life. His genius shines through and makes you regret he wasted all of those years with Foriegner.

The CD ends with two unnecessary, uninspired Hackett studio cuts.

There are three versions of this CD. There is a European one (which I picked up in Scotland) that has the least amount of features. The Japanese version advertises three extra tracks but it really only has one, a truncated version of Los Endos. The other two "extra" tracks are the studio tracks and are available on all versions. The US version is an enhanced CD that includes video you can play on your computer. There is also a VHS tape and laser disc, but no DVD.

If you like what McDonald does here, or the first two King Crimson albums, you will want to check out the album McDonald and Giles, which sounds like a lost Crimson album.

5 out of 5 stars A Very Hot Live Album With Some Hidden Secrets............2000-02-17

I usually hate live albums because they generally sound muddy or the performance sucks. Not so on this 2 disc set. No, Steve Hackett still can't carry a tune but John Wetton has never sounded better. Also, for those of you who don't know, the American version of this set has 20 minutes of live video by the band on the second disc. You have to use your CD drive on your computer to access it, but it's well worth the effort. Too bad I can only watch it on my 17" monitor. A really nice bonus, though, to an already first rate set.

5 out of 5 stars A music fusion from Genesis, K.C. and Asia on CD and DVD.......2003-01-05

The Tokyo Tapes brings you a unique collection of songs from Genesis, King Crimson, John Wetton and even an acoustic version of the Asia-blockbuster Heat of the Moment. Some of these songs, like Watcher of the Skies or In the Court of the Crimson King haven't been played by the respective bands for a long, long time. Firth of Fifth is present with a flute-solo. The middle of this song is replaced by a psychedelic jam, which ends in the familiar and still brilliant guitar-solo. John Wetton shows us here that he really is a great bass player. It's a pity, that this song is followed by Battlelines, which is not one of Wetton's best solo-efforts. Camino Royale is nevertheless beautiful and more powerful than the studio version on Highly Strung. Heavy guitars, saxophone, beating drums, just nine (!) minutes of great rock! The voices of Hackett and Wetton really fit together. Special attention must be paid to The Court of the Crimson King and I Talk to the Wind. These versions are really gems. A must have for any Crimson-fan. It's mellotron all over the place and it's lovely to hear a real flute again. Next, an acoustic mini-set follows, consists of Heat of the Moment, Horizons, and Walk away with Rainbows, a result of the co-operation between Hackett and Colbeck. The second CD starts with another Genesis song, In that Quiet Earth, which is, in this version, pure and fast jazz-rock. Thompson and Wetton are a hell of rhythm-section here. As with any jazz-song all members get the chance to improvise. You never heard Genesis like this! Next is Vampire with an Appetite of Hackett's Guitar Noir-album. This song is a very dark piece where Steve, singing through a kind of vocoder, takes us to the dark streets of London. Again, there's much room for variation to the original. It's nice that any of these fine musicians get the chance to show their own qualities in this way. Another of those dark songs is Shadow of the Hierophant. This song, taken from Hackett's first solo-album, was written by Hackett and Rutherford. Halfway this song, Chester has the chance to show us his skills. Finally we can hear what he's up to. His drumsolo beautifully developes into .... Los Endos ! Several fragments of other songs and various improvised themes are present in this song. The 'like father, like son'-melody is played by Ian McDonald on flute. Another beautiful acoustic piece follows. Black Night is a again one of those fragile songs, that Hackett has made through the years. When you listen carefully, you will even notice some bars from The Lamb. The audience immediately responds when a tiny bit from Cockoo Cockoon is played. After the silence, another slow, but bombastic piece is there. The Steppes, from Spectral Mornings is right on the spot here. It's Genesis again for the finale: I Know What I Like. This band, although only together for this occasion is really tight. The funky intro of this song is really misleading, but as soon as the lawnmower starts .... it's fun time again. The DVD also offers an eighteen minutes bonus of rehearsal footage and band biographies. The only sad thing about the DVd is the fact that it is "only"in stereo. I wonder if it wasn't an option to upgrade it in dolby 5.1 or even better to DTS!!

5 out of 5 stars TOKIO TAPES? No!

4 out of 5 stars Also known as the Tokyo Tapes.......2000-07-21

5 out of 5 stars An exciting revisit of the past.......1998-09-19

As a new admirer of Steve Hackett, this album has quickly become one of my favorites. Featuring guest artists John Wetton, Chester Thompson, Ian McDonald, and Julian Colbeck, the 19 tracks offer energenic recompilations of old songs, each with that special Steve Hackett trademark.

As usual, Steve Hackett and his guests seem to be able to recapture the spirit of older songs by giving them new life and an invigorating perspective, musically expressing previously written material in a new light.

Speaking of new, there is also two new studio tracks on the album.

A must for a Steve Hackett admirer.
