5 out of 5 stars Davis Appeals to the Thinkers.......2000-12-01

Stuart Davis is the thinking person's musician, which is not to say that his music isn't great in and of itself. The lyrics, however, are the core. He thinks before he writes, which is refreshing. And he makes the listener think as well. As a poet, I immediately chuckled along with Davis's observations of irony and juxtaposition that most pass daily without a second thought (e.g., Billboard, Little White Town, Only Changing Drugs). It's almost like a musical stand-up routine of a very dry sort. Hard to believe that all this perspective is found in a fairly young person... ah, but he's really an "old soul" if you pause to think about it. And his music is catchy enough to make you repeat each track til you know the lyrics by heart... and by then you'll be thinking the same "hey, wait a minute!" thoughts that he does! Talk about addictive!

5 out of 5 stars Stuart's Oldies but Goodies.......2000-10-14

This album has some great songs on it, but you won't get the chance to hear most of these at his concerts anymore. I like some of the sarcastic humor found in several of these songs. I was not disappointed with anything about this album.

5 out of 5 stars Offbeat wisdom.......2000-07-12

I first heard Stuart Davis when he played a local university around the time of the release of this album. These songs and the songs on his other albums carry an aggressive folk sound and deal with themes you've never thought of in a song context. Stuart is as much an actor as a songwriter, as many of the songs are in the voice of an invented character. The first song on this album is an example. Only changing drugs approaches MN's large rehab industry as an addict who's exchanging their substance addiction for an addiction to support groups, rehab programs and 12 step programs. A strange statement to make, but something to think about. All in all, I'd recommend this as a good starting point into his catalog.

5 out of 5 stars A TRUE CLASSIC GEM!.......2006-07-13

Classic Thrash at its best.
Wisconsin Thrash metal band with a little Death thrown in .The songs are fast in your face and never let you go. Pat Lind vocals are raw, aggressive. A very hard CD to find but a must have.
This is a treasure find for any Collector of Heavy Metal. Classic Thrash Metal done right and still holds up today.
Some label really does need to pick this up and reissues it.

5 out of 5 stars Unequaled Intensity.......2006-06-03

Nuff said, you need to get this album if your'e into thrash or death metal. This is just runs rings around Slayer's Reign in Blood.

5 out of 5 stars Thrash Masterpiece.......2006-03-03

Originally released in 1990 on the virtually unknown Mexican label Avanzada Metalica, Morbid Saint's Spectrum of Death is a thirty-two-minute slab of viciously addictive thrash, unparalleled by the efforts of any major band. Featuring Pat Lind's scathing vocals and Lee Reynolds hyper, yet unbelievably precise drumming, this eight-cut recording easily ranks among the masterpieces of metal.

With almost no publicity, Spectrum of Death was reissued by Grind Core in 1992. Since the heyday of thrash had passed, it was evident that Morbid Saint's brand of metal wouldn't be heard by the masses. Without an inkling of hesitation I submit that, had it been marketed with any fanfare, this album would be the favorite of thousands of metalheads, as it has not been removed from my CD changer since the day it was purchased.

The album's lead track, "Lock up your Children" wastes no time in initiating the listener, while cuts like "Damien", "Scars", and "Crying for Death" possess qualities that make them instantly memorable. The crowning achievement, however, is the 7-minute thrash epic "Assassin". Just after the four-minute mark, Lee Reynolds executes a clinic on ungodly drumming. While Gene Hoglan, Dave Lombardo, and others are often heralded as untouchables in the art, Lee Reynolds could hit the skins as well as anybody.

Obtaining a copy of Spectrum of Death on disc is not a simple task, although a little searching and a willingness to ante-up should enable one to get his paws on what should be considered a nearly flawless piece of death-tinged thrash.

5 out of 5 stars too bad i only have the CDr.......2005-01-10

i agree with the producer, and the anti-pantera person below, this album/demo slays! i just wish it was a little longer, because with only about 32 minutes of music, it's hard to really judge how amazing this band was. to eric greif, i was wondering if you could tell me a little more about the band? email me if you see this please!

5 out of 5 stars A CLASSIC ALBUM.......2005-01-08

I don't know who the reviewer is ("a music fan") who wrote such an eloquent and spot-on review in April '04, but that was the best that I've ever read. It was a pleasure to produce such a raw and honest example of perfect late 80s thrash. The shame is that it got lost in the shuffle and never saw the light of day properly. For that I must take part of the blame - but then again it was always an uphill battle coming from the American Midwest. Anyway, though I produced it, I can still say it stands the test of time...and is still available on the net if you hunt it down. Oh, and anyone that can say it is a ripoff of Pantera is certainly mistaken - this album predates Pantera.

5 out of 5 stars Stuart Davis Review.......2000-06-20

A very interesting early work from one of America's most interesting and blazingly original songwriters. Not necessarily the first album to buy from Minnesota's strangest son, but a must-have for real fans. You've never heard songs like this before.
