5 out of 5 stars One of the Greats.......2006-09-30

If you whine about how Lynard Sky.. is no longer making good music or zztop... you should buy this album.. cause if you like blues, boogie woogie rock and a mean slide guitar buy this album.. However I would recommend for the first time listener..True Death which has some of the best material Slab ever put out.. including the awesome, "I heard the Owl". Trust me, do yourself a great favor. If you love classic rock...buy it..

5 out of 5 stars Monster Boogie is Right!.......2005-10-25

5 stars = MASTERPIECE

Raging Slab was described as a combination of Metallica meets Lynryd Skynyrd, which is a fairly apt description (though one could say Blackfoot), but one key ingredient was left out, Pat Travers, heavy Pat Travers circa "Putting it Straight" & "Heat in the Street," & maybe more influential than Metallica. Raging Slab was a formidable musical entity, & their name fit perfectly. Singer Gregory Strzempka, belting out vocals like Ronnie Van Zant, with all the emotive capabilities of the former. Strzempka wrote lyrics like Ronnie to, of human pain & happiness. No, Raging Slab was not just a dumb redneck southern heavy metal outfit; there was a lot of brain power going on in this band, along with a wall of guitars. Raging Slab featured three guitarist, & they knew how to play, & play well they did!

Raging Slab has put out five or six albums to my knowledge, but there are two that stand head & shoulders above the rest; Raging Slab "ST" & the monumental "Dynamite Monster Boogie Concert," which sounds like a title for a live album, but is a studio release. Both these albums are masterful works of heavy, heavy, southern rock, & only Blackfoot before them ventured into this heavy of territory. Raging Slab "ST" was just a blaze of guitars & heavy rhythms, pulling the listener into to their swirling vortex for a sonic train ride that was over way to short & leaves one begging for more.

As good as "ST" was, & it was GOOD, Raging Slab's crowning achievement had to be "Dynamite Monster Boogie Concert." Here everything that came in play with the "ST" was personified & diversified to one of the best albums of rock history, & it didn't sell squat! Strzempka was at the height of his writing abilities, sounding like the second coming of Ronnie Van Zant. This man should have replaced Ronnie instead of Ronnie's brother Johnny, seriously, Strzempka was that good on this album, & I could just imagine what he & Ricky Medlocke (Blackfoot) now of Lynyrd Skynyrd could do together! Oh the possibilities! But back to the album. "Dynamite Monster Boogie Concert" was a true masterpiece of guts, glory, & beautiful melodies that struck deep down in my musical soul, of the like Raging Slab have never repeated. Each song a triumph of musical integrities to Strzempka's profound musical vision, a perfect album if there is such a thing. After fifteen years this CD still gets heavy play on my stereo, & friends of mine. It is an immortal achivement of the highest order & not to be missed by anyone who loves heavy metal & southern rock!

4 out of 5 stars Slide guitars galore.......2003-12-15

Raging Slab uses, at times, three slide guitars in a song. Their music is heavy southern rock, and the songs on "Concert" are almost all catchy. The main disadvantage is that the singer, Greg Strzempka, has a halting delivery which might annoy some. It sounds good on "Concert", but somehow terrible on "Sing Monkey Sing", which I think is the follow-up.

THere's a lot of guitar on this, and it all sounds good.

4 out of 5 stars Highly original Jams by a talented band.......2003-11-06

I don't know a single other person who owns a Raging Slab album; I have 2 and have heard more. Dynamite Monster Boogie Concert is by far their best effort, IMO. Very catchy rythms mixed with excellent guitar riffs; the lyrics are cool too, if you're into that. I highly recommend this album, this is excellent southern fried rock with a unique twist.

To give you an idea of where I'm coming from, my favorite bands are COC, DOWN, Black Label Society (Zakk Wylde) and Atomic Bitchwax.

    4 out of 5 stars BOOGIE!!!.......2001-07-29

After the sludgy, disappointing "Sing Monkey Sing" and an extended hiatus, Raging Slab are back in peak form on "The Dealer." Harkening back to their early independently-released material, the band mixes up a tasty stew of raw blues, southern-fried funk, psychedelia and plain old good-timey bar-band rock that sounds great blasting from your speakers. This is beer-drinking, hell-raising rock n' roll at it's best. Do yourself a favor and pick up on this right away!

    5 out of 5 stars Hidden Gem.......2007-06-07

Raging Slab had a small window in the early 90's where they almost broke through. I happened to discover them and became a fan. Their quintessential work is "Dynamite Monster Boogie", which I would recommend to fans of all music genres. Since that work, I have tried to get my hands on "everything Slab" including this. So, how can I be "helpful" for those that have stumbled upon this and are relying on customer reviews? Yes, it's Southern Rock, you get the funkiness like Skynryd but it's much RICHER. The lyrics are much better and there is a bit of edginess. It's a bit of "stoner music", but that shouldn't be a knock... the music is like ordering a chicken-fried steak with mashed potatoes and gravy.

5 out of 5 stars Pedal to the metal rock and roll.......2005-11-13

All that can be said about these guys (and girl ;)) is that they simply rock.

Personally, I've never cared much for southern-fried boogie stuff, but this band just has some kind of rock magic. If you like any hard rock music at all, you owe it to yourself to check them out. Try out the clips and treat yourself to maximum rock and roll the way it's supposed to be played.

A real gem in a world full of coal nuggets.

      2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2004-04-10

As much as it pains me to say it, Raging Slab really fumbled the ball on "Sing Monkey Sing." The whole thing sounds like a blatant contractual obligation move, with murky production and distressingly tuneless, unfocused songs that go nowhere. Aside from a semi-catchy riff on the opening track "Shoulda Known," there's nary a memorable moment on the remainder of the CD. This is a band that can really tear it up live and most of their other releases are first-rate. Avoid this sludgy mess and go for "Dynamite Monster Boogie Concert," "The Dealer," or their self-titled debut instead.

I love every one of Raging Slab's cds, but this being the first that I heard, it had a huge impact.
Great, great band with catchy and heavy hooks, and fantastic songwriting and melody to boot. Not only can they play sludgy riffs similar to Bad Co., Nugent and Sabbath, but also throw in some tasty Southern & Country infuences in their playing. They really do have an original and identifiable sound that is all their own. Greg's vocals & guitar playing, plus Elyse's slide guitar are a killer combo.
They are still playing up to now, but wish they would tour the USA again.

5 out of 5 stars Metallica meets Skynard.......2001-05-04

In 1990 a bunch of guys gigging around New York recorded one of the best Southern Rock albums ever. I've been searching for this since my cassette wore out after about a million plays, and until now, it was always out of print.

Well, the wait was definately worth it. This is like hearing a totally different disk. I'd forgotten most of the songs, at least I thought I had. In the middle of my first play through, the lyrics just appeared in my brain again.

It's too bad that Amazon doesn't have samples for you to hear, but if you remember their one big hit "Don't Dog Me" from the heavy rotation it had on MTV around the time the disk was originally released, and liked it, you'll love this disk.

"Geronimo" is probably the best song on the disk, if I have to pick one, "Don't Dog Me", "Bent For Silver", "Joy Ride", and "Dig A Hole" are all great. Hell the whole album is great!
