5 out of 5 stars Not a masterpiece but definately a great debut/classic.......2005-03-30

its 2005, and melodic death metal is pretty much dead.
thrash metal faced the same thing by 1992. most of the leaders of the melo-death genre are metalcore/numetal generic bands, leaveing us with generic melo-death clones with no originality whatsoever.

so where do you go now?? you go look for the classics.

this is a classic. where it all began. it took less than 2 weeks to write this cd, which is amazing since its so great.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2004-08-24

If only In Flames were still like this...
I SO love this cd and find myself returning to it alot.
All the tracks are excellent! tho ya kinda have to be in the mood for the key-violin intro's/song(Hagarlaten). They are very beatifull but not for evryone, small detail tho because the rest of the music is so stunning it doesn't matter.

Quote"The first album, Lunar Strain, was the first the world ever heard of this talented band, and features very prominent guitars (courtesy of the master Jesper Stromblad) and very high-pitched vocals (is that Anders?)">>Mikael Stanne(now in DT).

Pitty the booklet is very thin and doesn't have any lyrics but you can view them on the internet.
conclusion: GET THIS CD.

4 out of 5 stars 5 stars for each album, 0 for the packaging........2004-08-22

This is a great collection of two great albums from one of the best and most influential of all metal bands, but I have a BIG beef with it: the packaging. The cover just says "Lunar Strain," without a hint of the fact that SUBTERRANEAN is on it, too. Okay, I can deal with that, but come on, NO LYRICS? That is just bad. At least in their earlier days, In Flames wrote some amazing, thought-provoking lyrics, filled with awesome imagery (just read the lyrics to "Jotun" and you'll know what I mean), and it's a shame not to have them reprinted in this otherwise delicious little compilation (or at least in the copy that I have - which is by no means a bootleg or anything similar).

Oh well, it's still a good collector's item.

5 out of 5 stars Don't buy this here--it's cheaper in the stores!.......2004-07-27

This is a melodic Death Metal classic, and for that I award the 5 stars. However, I've price-shopped the stores around my home (So. Cal.) and it's selling for average price. It's almost the same edition with Lunar Strain and Subterranean together on one disc. Actually, the one I purchased is better because it includes an 18th track from Korea called "Eye of the Beholder." Yet it's only $15.99-17.99. Why the price jump?

By all means, get this incredible album, but avoid getting screwed while yer at it. Don't pay $35.00+ for it. For that price, you could buy 2-3 In Flames CDs & spread the love. It's hard enough to find & afford many of these great old albums already. Who is continually dropping the ball on great metal CDs and letting them go to pot?

Here are some other CDs that are either out-of-print or going OOP and demanding too high a price. Don't pay $99.99 for a Nuclear Assault CD--just burn it if you can find it. We metalheads should start an online DB/upload for albums like this so they don't get lost. Who could justifiably care if we swap files if noone is getting any damn royalties anyway? If something that actually works like this exists, please let me know.

5 out of 5 stars The Heaviest Of Them All.......2004-06-15

These albums showcase In Flames original style which was melodic death. This album, or albums, have songs heavier then songs on any of their other albums. It features classics such as "In Flames", which is one of the best songs on this album. "Starforsaken" begins with a folk sound and then morphs into a brutal amazing song. "Upon an Oaken Throne" is my favorite of all their songs on this album, and is my favorite In Flames song with the exception of "Episode 666". "Behind Space" is a brutal song that is flawless. It ends with a great folk melody. The songs "Everlost Part 1" and "Everlost Part 2" are both amazing, while being completely different. "Everlost Part 1" is a loud heavy song that keeps its strength while being slow. It ends off with Stromblad doing what he does best, playing acoustic guitar. This leads up to "Everlost Part 2" which is a beautiful song featuring Stromblad playing some of the best acoustic guitar ever with a beautiful voice singing over it. The lyrics to the song are beautiful, and even fans of death metal such as me, enjoy the song. It is funny, most people would not suspect that people that listen to death metal had an emotional side of music.
All of these new fans of In Flames say that their old stuff was terrible. This brings a tear to my eye. Anybody who does not enjoy the classics on this album should never listen to In Flames. This album is flawless and rocks.

5 out of 5 stars Bought the two separately but..........2006-11-28

Lunar Strain (tracks 1-10)
First In Flames album. It is raw and unfocused. That's what's great about it. Unexpected things happen in unexpected places. For instance, there's an all-violin instrumental, and a track done entirely using female vocals. I want to say that it's almost experimental, like they were trying out a bunch of different styles to find a sound. Of course, production quality is not the best, but after the initial listen one hardly notices anymore. It is just a little flat sounding.

Subterranean (tracks 11-15, or 11-17, not sure if those two were included on the original cd)
Heavenly. But then again, I listen to guitars more than drums or vocals or anything. Dead Eternity also appears on The Jester Race, but this version is done quite differently and adds a new perspective on the song. The Inborn Lifeless, one will see, is Dead God in Me with different lyrics (or is it the other way around?).

Overall, I probably wouldn't recommend this as a first experience with In Flames (check out The Jester Race or Whoracle.) But a good buy for someone who has a couple CDs and wants to hear how it started.

5 out of 5 stars Forgotten Treasure.......2006-10-10

Let me start this off by saying I love Sweden, especially its music. Nearly half of my favorite bands come from their. In Flames, however, are by far my favorite. Godly riffs, smart lyrics, and strained vocals really make me all fuzzy feeling. With all albums but Reroute and Soundtrack under my wing, its time to give this CD a shot, so where to begin?

Well, first thing you will notice is the vocals. The singer is not, and I repeat, is not Anders. Although this singer does his job good, (cant remember his name, believe hes from Dark Tranquility), he doesnt lay a finger on Anders in term of range and compassion. Another thing you will notice is the folk-inspired theme, which is probally due to the fact that Jesper's father, Grandfather, and Great-grandfather were all Swedish folk musicians. And finally, The guitars dont sound nearly as good as they do on Jester Race, merely because Jesper isnt as good as a guitarist on this record, (in particular, his solos are very sloppy.)

However, this is still a required buy, especially if you love everything Gothenberg. My favorites from this CD include Biosphere, Upon an Oaken Throne, Starforsaken, and Behind Space, but I did not once skip.

Get this CD, and enjoy, for the future of melodeath, and metal in general, looks bleak...

5 out of 5 stars incredible beginning.......2006-09-10

what a great way to start up in flames. this cd is much much different than thier newest crappy album (come clarity) or whatever. the vocals as someone else said are a little primitive. vocals on the other cd's "clayman" and reroute are more fixed up sounding and seem almost like he is screaming with some kind of special effect. the vocals in this cd are very raw and frankly if the music wasn't so good it would drag it down. a lot of the riffs are awesome. not to mention these guys play a mean melodic riff here and there like in the end of the first song. it sounds like something straight out of pirates of the caribbean or something. very good stuff. it is much more metally than thier latest album which are beginning to move toward that nu-metal as i lay dying style. yuck... so anyways i'd say fans vary for this cd. your either a "clayman" fan or a "lunar strain fan". if you liked this cd, go ahead and buy the "jester race/black ash inheritance". it is much like this one but the vocals have begun to improve.

4 out of 5 stars May be a classic but..........2006-09-04

The vocals suck worse than ever, some of the guitar parts sound the same, and the production quality sucks. I truly believe that this re-issue is highly over-rated. Even the original pressings of these two release are over-rated. "Lunar Strain" and "Subterranean" are In Flames first two albums. With these two releases In Flames helped forge Melodic Death Metal. And they are great release, but they are not the best of what Melodic Death Metal has to offer. The drums are plain and boring, there is virtually no bass guitar heard(Heresy!). The guitar work is good, but not the best ever.
I feel that "Lunar Strain" and "Subterranean" are too highly over-rated releases that do not represent In Flames all that well.

5 out of 5 stars ( May 2, 2006) A classic...........2006-03-13

I originally wrote a review for this cd sometime ago but deleted it. I had said that this was my first death metal cd in a long time but I am going to wait and say that for the Cynic cd I'm going to get at the end of the week. Anyway, this is a combination of death metal like Death but mixed with melodic guitar playing similar to Iron Maiden. This is a good package here and has some sick songs on it especially Everlost part 1 and part 2. This style of death metal is usually called melodic death metal or Gothenburg metal. Gothenburg is the city in Sweden where this style supposedly originated from. This is a well done cd and I suggest to those who like good metal, In Flames, brutal metal mixed with melody, or good music to go pick this one up.

4 out of 5 stars A solid debut by an important band........2006-05-21

In Flames' first release is certainly an interesting one. While the band are commonly considered to be pioneers of the melodic death sound along with Dark Tranquillity and At the Gates (all Swedish), their early work displayed many other facets that helped to grace the metal world with classy, intelligent death metal. Lunar Strain showcases the band at their most inventive, lacking the fear for experimentation that seems to have dulled their later releases.

After pressing play, the very first thing that enters my mind is Dark Tranquillity. Not only do they have many musical similarities, but Dark Tranquillity's vocalist Mikael Stanne is also present, making the likeness even stronger. In a strange twist of events, In Flames' later vocalist Anders Friden was at the time of this release the vocalist for none other than Dark Tranquillity. Putting the incest-like nature of the bands aside, I'll move on.

The Swedish outfit have generally riff driven tracks, yet are certainly not afraid to bring on some impressive lead-work. It's the melodies that make this album so catchy and it's the variety that allows it to still sound fresh even today. With a female vocal led ballad (Everlost Part II), a ripping thrash track (Upon an Oaken Throne), a doom-driven slab (Everlost Part I) along with their trademark Gothenburg death metal sound mean the listener never gets bored. Even if not everything they attempt on Lunar Strain works completely (the folkish "Hargalaten" a prime example), I still give them a whole lot of marks for effort.

Highlights for me include the album opener "Behind Space", "Everlost Part I" and Upon an Oaken Throne", but there's something here for everyone.

Lunar Strain is by no means their best album, but it's a great introduction to a hugely successful band, and should not be set below their more commercial work that would split their fan-base many years later.

5 out of 5 stars In Flames at their best.......2006-02-27

This for me is the best In Flames album...very solid, creative, and epic. the songs made me feel as if i were in sweden...i love Everlost Part II. The female vocals are very strong. Behind Space is the best track on the album by far.

3 out of 5 stars 4 stars for the album, 2 stars for the packaging.......2006-02-17

Am I alone in being a bit disappointed by the Lunar Strain and Subterranean reissues? They're both great albums, and the remastering is a welcome improvement, but I expected a bit more from the reissued versions. The bonus tracks (3 demos and a 38 second acoustic instrumental) are a nice addition, but aren't really noteworthy.

My major complaint is the packaging. Each album's booklet is basically worthless. There's a black and white band photo and nothing else. No lyrics, no liner notes, nothing that even tells you who was in the band at the time, who wrote the songs, or the history of the bonus tracks. Did the band have any involvement with these reissues at all? Dark Tranquillity's reissues of the Gallery and the Mind's I really put these to shame. Perhaps it is the label's fault. Nuclear Blast's reissues of Whoracle, Colony, and Clayman were definitely done right.

I know the music is what really matters, but I expected a better overall package from a band like In Flames.

3 out of 5 stars Great Music, but the vocals.........2003-02-10

Wow, the music in this one is absolutely stunning. Everything is just composed and put together just the way you would normally expect from In Flames. The singing is just atrocious. I can stand the high pitched wailing. If you can, well then perhaps this album is for you. Subterranean and Biosphere are both amazing songs!

4 out of 5 stars My introduction to In Flames... and its goooood..........2001-05-11

First off, I have to say that this isn't the sort of melodic death I'm into. I prefer the more thrash/death type bands that are much faster like Soilwork, At The Gates and their illegitimate offspring The Haunted. This is more epic and brooding, occasionally thrashing out but generally staying at at a mid-pace. But don't be put off - this album, despite being a little hard to get into, is nonetheless highly recommended.

The guitar work is very intricate, each guitarist piling out different melodies and playing different notes that compliment each other perfectly. Being a guitarist I should know the technical term for that but I can't remember right now coz I'm [terrible] at the technical side of music.(!) Anyway, this is especially cool when you're wearing headphones coz the 2 guitars come out of different speakers, so the effect of two slightly different pieces of music being played at once is more apparent. The vocals are quite searing; Average, but after listening to various forms of death metal and having got used to the sound they will not disappoint. There's also a large influence from Nordic and more so Swedish (the band's home country) folk music, which is certainly very interesting and unique. Just listen to the traditional piece Hargalaten, Everlost (Part II), the outro to Behind Space, and the intro to Starforsaken - the effect is something dark yet beuatiful.

The only downpoint about this album is that it occasionally sounds a bit too ambitious. I don't mean that in terms of my own taste - I simply feel that whereas most bands start off simple and mature with time (compare Metallica's "Kill Em All" to their third release "Master Of Puppets") and therefore learn with experience, In Flames seem to try and skip out the maturing bit. Not a bad thing, you might think, but sometimes I feel like they outdo themselves at times and try TOO hard. Its kinda hard to explain, you just need to hear it.

If it's breakneck speed you want - melodic or not - then you're better off looking elsewhere. But if its genuinely talented, thought out, interesting, adventurous and varied yet still heavy, death orientated metal that you're after then you've come to the right place. Iron Maiden on acid.

5 out of 5 stars In Flames roots, pure melodic metal........2001-04-27

After 2 month wait by Amazon I finally received my copy of Lunar Strain/Subteranean. I was definitly interested to hear early In Flames because I came in with their newest CD (Clayman), since than ive bought Jester, Colony, Whoracle. I love everyone of them and this band is definitly my favorite band.

First off I knew that Mikael Stanne was heading the group with vocals (I really love Anders Friden's voice). But from the first song "Behind Space", I was suprised. Mikael's voice is much more death metal esque (of course Stanne is from Dark Tranquility). I really wasnt into the high, gurgling sound of his voice. I love Ander's voice because of his ability to hold it solid while having that high pitch and deep growl. At first this really turned me off to the Lunar Strain portion. I had to listen to it several times and I adjusted to it and ended up enjoying it. Than Henke Forsse heads the Subteranean portion of the CD. His voice is alike Stannes but has a little more substance. I really enjoyed the "Subt" section.

Music wise, this is definitly In Flames. The hard riffs, the melodic guitar from Jesper, it all shines. Ill admit the production isnt the best but the sound is overall good. I was blown away by "Dreamscape". If your an In Flames fan you know that they are gods when it comes to instruementals. This ranks up there with Jester Dance, Wayfarer, and Man Made God. I loved it. They also have little interludes of some celtic type music which gives a refreshing break to some songs. Theres also two versions of "Dead Eternity", and "The Inborn Lifeless", which was later on "The Jester Race". I love the song Dead Eternity. I think Stanne did the vocals for this one. This version is also much more melodic.

Overall, this is a must for any In Flames fan. Its definitly a new twist if your from the "Clayman" era, but its In Flames and you have to love it. Their music is inspiring and at the same time breaks away from all the Limp Bizkit crap on the market today. This is a must for any In Flames fan. Now I cant wait for Tokyo Showdown. They are gonna sound kick live!

4 out of 5 stars Kings of Gothenburg.......2001-03-27

Early In Flames, very good though. Anders Friden (Dark Tranquility) handles most of the vocal work. If you can get past the bad recording it is a good cd.

5 out of 5 stars Great early In Flames.......2001-01-23

This album is great! All though not the same group today, this album is very complex and heavy. Great solos, and aggressive voices. I do not care for the female vocals(not because they are female, but because they are too slow and goth -like), but everything else is killer!

          4 out of 5 stars Great black\death of old!.......2000-01-30

The Japenese version of the debut release by In Flames is quite good value if you want my opinion- mainly due to the fact that not only are all the classic debut albumn tracks on this release, but the bonus tracks included are of the entire 'Subterranean ep'(the band's second release)with an added demo track! The European versions of the first two In Flames releases have been out of print for 4 years now- mainly due to the label this was pressed on(Wrong Again Records) going bankrupt in 1996, so here is your chance to get hold of them on 1 cd!

The actual material on this cd is typical of older Swedish death/black metal, but with a couple of differences! The music is typically 'Dissection' inspired(as many other groups in this scene were in the period elapsing from 1994 to now!), although is more melodic with softer guitars and less extreme vocals(still throat ripping stuff though). In fact, this band in a way pioneered this melodic death metal scene which has kicked off lately, so they have introduced a couple of original twists by adding to the Dissection sound. Of all the groups that were prentenders to Dissections mighty throne, In Flames were about the best runner up in my opinion because the first 2 albumns(and all their other releases in fact) were quite excellent. Sure, this has dated slightly by todays standards, because so many groups in the black\death metal scene have drowned their music with keyboards- this release hardly has any keyboards! This is technical death\black metal, with twin lead guitars, harmonic overtones, and good vocal performance. I personally rate the first 2 releases as In Flames finest, purely due to the presence of very good material, and very few poor songs. There are even some folky elements to the music which is a nice touch! This release is not perfect though, because the material is not the greatest I have ever heard by a long shot(things in the metal scene have chnged, and many bands have managed to improve on this sound). But, if you want a good sounding, solid performance melodic death/black albumn, then this is bound to impress you.

In a nutshell, I think this is an excellent release that I have listened to several times since buying it. The material on this albumn is comparable to 'Dissection','Dawn','Mork Gryning', 'Non Serviam','Unanimated'....etc.

5 out of 5 stars yeah, listen to this dude above.......1999-07-21

in flames is the best! I feel for the dude above me, he must be the only due who likes In Flames from Wisconsin. see ya buy this disc

          5 out of 5 stars Folk/Melodic death metal.......1999-06-30

I know that most of you In Flames fans have heard The Jester Race, Whoracle, or Colony, but If you have not yet heard Lunar Strain, then that's something you should strive for. This album contains many different elements to combine one sound. This was when the In Flames sound was born. A sound in which even today, they can still keep. This album is in many ways perfect and I strongly recommend that you buy it. You can thank me later.
