Newcomer to the genre.......2005-05-10
Wow! I haven't really listened to metal since the days of Venom and Possessed but these guys are dragging me back in!! Yes, this is pretty much Viking, Black Metal but the "attack" is much more varied than most of the bands I've heard. Parts of this veer closer to prog rock. If you like Opeth (who doesn't) but want darker lyrics then you should check this out.
dont even bother.......2005-05-05
long story short this is plain generic material by a band that doesn't receive any airplay on trl or the radio no wonder these guys aren't as famous as the more highly acclaimed acts such as Bleeding Through and As hope dies those bands actually have varying qualities to them whereas this band just struggles on everything. bottom line don't bother checking this garbage out and stick with metalcore, nu-metal, pop and rap
Excellent Viking Metal.......2005-03-11
This album is amazing. There may be only five songs but they are all spectacular, epic masterpieces. Although this does get categorized as Black Metal, thematically it focuses more on true paganism than the satanic paganism that many Black Metal bands focus on. This is probably why the phrase "viking metal" was coined to desribe this.
The album is quite long for the number of songs (an average of 10 minutes per song) and the band's style is also quite repetitive. What makes this album work are the varying guitar and synth melodies that hide underneath the wall of guitars. This allows repeated passages to grow grander with each repetition.
My personal favourites are "Vetrarnott" and "Norvegr", the former because its wonderful vitality is so empowering and the latter because of its beautiful, sorrowful melodies.
I haven't gives Hordanes Land as much time and although it is good "Vikingligr Veldi" is the real star of this compilation.
Metalheads, buy this NOW!
"We behold the kingdom of the Hammer.".......2004-12-30
Enslaved is (basically) one of the rare black metal band that has changed a lot without cheapening themselves. Everything I have heard by them has been great thus far. This set includes both _Hordanes Land_ and Enslaved's debut, the earliest of stuff.
Enslaved writes essentially kinetic black metal about Viking myth and lore, equally aggressive, savage, and glorious. The band dominated their split CD with Emperor (_Hordanes Land_ with _Wrath of the Tyrant_). Their epic, soaring "Viking metal" was brutally evocative and they improved on the essential template with their first full-length, _Vikingligr veldi_.
The songs are on average about 10 minutes in length, and Enslaved uses that length to orchestrate tension and release more richly. Musically, they are comparable to black metal, with thick, buzzsaw soundwalls, sometimes complemented by synths, and.with some fierce major key constructions. The songs are highly imaginative and well-suited to their subject matter (on some metaphysical level). My favorite is "Vetrarnot", because of its incredibly haunting, shimmering melodies amidst furious storms of blitzkrieg black metal. "Norvegr" is the magestic, climactic instrumental closer, and "Midgards Eldard" can only be described as the metal war march of a God.
I listen to _Vikingligr Veldi_ way more than _Hordanes Land_, but both are definitely worth having. This is an A-grade compilation.

A classic... no doubt about it.......2005-10-11
I bought this album as soon as it came out. I was 15 years old, a freshman in High School. I was very impressesd by the Emperor tracks, and have been a fan ever since.
These songs here, along with the earlier albums by Mayhem and especially Darkthrone have had an enormous influence upon my tastes musically ever since. Now, when I listen to this album, I am immediately transported back to that hell I was put through, Catholic High School.
I've always been an outsider, and I believe it was fate that brought me Norwegian BM. Without the RELEASE within this music, I doubt I'd have escaped school with my sanity intact.
The harsh, primitive sounds of this early BM was the soundtrack to my painful teen years. Then as I became a man(and the members of these bands matured) , the BM music progressed with me. The rebellious satanism was naturally replaced with a call to return to the religions of old. This conversion is inevitable as one must first tear down societies rules before they can be replaced.
Most definitely, this album is the sound of young men tearing down modern society, rebelling against anything conventional. When I was 15, that's exactly how I felt and dicovering BM was like hearing the emotions I felt inside expressed musically. Like hearing the music of your soul. It was and still is a powerful connection.
The fact that members of Emperor, Dark Throne, Mayhem etc... were burning down churches and murdering people made this music seem... dangerous- and maybe it is, I don't know. I've never been musically persuaded to commit a crime, but others have probably. I've always felt relieved of anger through this music, not enraged by it. Any way, I liked being a part of something UNDERGROUND, dark and mysterious.
Today, few BM bands can muster the SINCERITY of these pioneers but, for the safety of the general public and in the interest of making money, I suppose they couldn't go around setting churches ablaze anymore could they? Oh well, for people like me, I can always throw on a classic like this and remember fondly the days when BM was art, and the men making it LIVED IT, and it was underground and just for me.
Long live the BLACK METAL. Also, Enslaved is mucho talented, but I am an American and cannot understand a word they say. It's not a big deal for some, but I just can't get into it for some reason- like watching a German movie w/o subtitles.
I highly recommend this and any other Emperor album, but this music is for the few, not the many, and demands effort on the part of the listener along with a special mindstate that most cannot have. To most, this is NOISE. To those who can tune their ears and open their minds, this music is SONIC BLISS. Enjoy at your own risk.
Get it, get it, get it.......2005-06-21
Fantastic black metal tracks from Emperor, among the best they've ever done despite the somewhat primative recording. Plus some great metal from my favorite angry vikings Enslaved. Both bands provide complex and deeply moving tracks though this recording is the first thing both bands officially released. The intensity and darkness that these guys create is palpable and any fan of black metal, especially the early days of the Norwegian scene should have this album. Both bands went on to greater things but this is an excellent beginning.
Devastating beginning for Enslaved.......2002-08-22
I'm going to focus this review entirely on the Enslaved portion of this release, although the four Emperor tunes are crucial as well in the understanding of that band's developement.
After a number of demos (including Yggdrasil, available as a split cd with an early Satyricon demo), on this cd lies the first official release from the Enslaved camp, recorded in 1992 for Candlelight Records.
From the 13-minute opening track, SLAGET I SKOGEN BORTENFOR (the Battle in the Forest Beyond), the vision of the band is established: long, dirge-like songs; screeching, angry vocals; fast, relentless drumming, prominent, repetitive guitar riffing, and consistent use of driving synths blended into the mix. In spite of the long song length, this tune motors along at a very fast pace, consistently interesting and often powerful. There are a number of breaks in the song when the pace slackens and a wave of guitar noise washes over the mix, but the drums inevitably kick back in and the horse continues on its furious path.
The 8-minute second track (ALLFATHIR ODHINN / Allfather Oden) is a reworked tune from the Yggdrasil demo. It's consistently faster than the opening track, and the intense moment when the banshee vocals break into the song for the first time is undeniably powerful. The tune does tend to bog down with a repetitive, slightly uninteresting guitar riff, backed by atmospheric synth, but overall it maintains its energy and power throughout.
Unlike the driving fury of the first two tracks, the 10-minute finale, BALFOR (Journey by Fire), is more of a mid-paced epic. The mood captured on this tune is not as evil, more even-tempered and cautious. Personally it captures the feeling of a hike through the forests of Norway, on the way to battle. Unusually pretty keyboard and synth work throughout this song give it more of a classical or folk feel. While I don't find it as interesting as the first two tracks, it is still a highly ambitious undertaking for a band on their debut release.
Overall, the Enslaved half of Hordanes Land is a must for Enslaved fans and an excellent purchase for those looking to explore some of the earliest roots of the Norwegian black metal scene. Like all releases by this band, this is serious, intelligent metal, intended to be listening to repeatedly and carefully. It's not for everyone for sure, but if you "get it", you're in for an amazing discovery.
Emperor/Enslaved - Hordanes Land.......2001-08-25
This is one of the best albums I've ever heard. It starts with the all-time classic "I Am The Black Wizards" by Emperor, which is one of the best black metal songs around. Enslaved's half, containing songs like Allfadr Odhinn, is at least just as good. In fact, both Emperor and Enslaved are amongst Blackmetal's top 5 bands, in my opinion. Buy this split cd. You won't regret it. I know. I'm from Norway.
ARGUABLE THE BEST BLACK METAL ALBUM EVER!.......2000-10-18
Why are there so few reviews for this album compared to "Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk?" I'll tell you why: cuz people do not know what the *&^(*&^ is up! If you buy ANY Emperor album, buy this one (plus it comes with the Enslaved tracks instead of the Wrath of the Tyrant demo which sounds terrible) The Emperor tracks here are some of, if not THE, best black metal has to offer. Cold as all hell, beautiful, symphonic, yet still evil harsh heavy and brutal; nothing, NOTHING, else either by this band or anyone else sounds like this and nothing ever will. Do not waste your time with "Anthems," buy this instead. And fo all you people who think Emperor's later stuph is better than their earlier, I don't know what you're smoking........... I've been listening to bm for seven years so trust me..... :)
