In 1999, Exodus was rightfully voted by the most important album of the 20th century by Time magazine. This is the visionary Bob Marley's masterpiece, a concept album that distills the myriad experiences of both our daily lives and collective unconsciousness into 46 minutes of aural perfection.

Exodus has been flawlessly remastered from the original recordings and showcases what is probably the Wailers' tightest recorded performance. The initial notes of the album's opening track, "Natural Mystic," fade up from a deep silence, giving the listener the impression that the music generates from within a continuum of the past, present, and future. The first half of Exodus bears witness to Marley's shift in focus away from the mundane problems of Babylon existence and toward a greater understanding of vital universal truths. The second half features songs such as "Jamming" and "Waiting in Vain," which take a gently wistful look at the more interpersonal aspects of human relations. --Rebecca Levine

5 out of 5 stars Iconic! Simply unmissable!.......2007-06-07

I watched a TV documentary the other night about the making of this album and it was a spellbinding hour and a half. Apparently, Bob had to flee Jamaica for the UK after an assassination attempt and ended up living in London for a year. It was during this year that this phenomenal album was recorded. I've owned it for over 20 years now - first on cassette, then on vinyl and finally on CD - and I had no clue that this was so.

The album was released in 1977. It was the year of the Queen's Silver Jubilee but Britain was in a very bad place, the seeds of Thatcherism and the heartless 80s had already been sown and Punk ruled the airwaves. I lived a very sheltered life as a teenager and so it wasn't until 1979 when I went away to boarding school, that I finally get to hear the album in its entirety. It was a true revelation. I heard it on (what was then) a new invention my peers and I called a "hi-fi system" owned by an older student and I remember hearing the percussion on "Jamming" and being transfixed. No exaggeration; I was literally hypnotised.

The album is faultless with pristine production by Bob and The Wailers. From the minute the first strains of "Natural Mystic" fade in, through the accusatory "Guiltiness", on to the revolutionary title track, the slow jams "Waiting In Vain" & "Turn Your Lights Down Low", on to the optimitic "Three Little Birds" and right to the end of "One Love/People Get Ready", there is not a single note out of place. Each song, a potential hit single, (7 of the 10 songs on the original album were actually hits here in the UK) has a vibrant, totally relevant message - especially for a black teenager living in 70s UK, and Bob's primary ethos of peace & love have stayed with me ever since. That being said, this is the album that began to open my young eyes to the oppression and injustice that already surrounded me. The idea that music wasn't simply for entertainment or escapism but could inspire thought, behaviour and attitude change as well as activism, was new and very appealing.

And this was also the album that turned Bob from an international reggae star into a global prophet. Setting everything about Rastafarianism (respectfully) to one side, Bob the man and the music he made, the message he spread, have always educated and enthralled me in equal measure and always will. When I think about what are for me, consummately iconic, influential and superb recordings and I think about such albums as Miles Davis' Kind of Blue, John Coltane's A Love Supreme, Stevie Wonder's Songs in the Key of Life, Michael Jackson's Off the Wall, Pink Floyd's The Wall (Deluxe Packaging Digitally Remastered) and Radiohead's OK Computer, I also, immediately, think of Bob Marley's "Exodus". My life was definitely not the same after listening to it and now that I fully understand the story behind it, I hold the album in even higher esteem.

Whether this is Marley's best piece of work or not is, I guess, a matter of personal opinion and will always be open to debate. What is beyond doubt, is that it is my favourite Bob Marley album and I am proud and honoured to make this my 200th review on amazon.com. I'm a bit of a purist so I prefer the version I have which does not have the two extra tracks (though I have both on 12" single) but they are definitely worth having. As such, this is the version to get. There'll no doubt be a '30th anniversary edition' knocking around before too long as well.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent album!.......2007-05-30

I'm not really a reggae fan, but I love Stevie Wonder. I thus decided to give Bob Marley a chance. I must say this album can really get you hooked on this kind of music. Songs are witty, rhythmic and memorable. It is one of the best albums to jog along with. Bob Marley is definitely one of the more interesting artists of recent times.

5 out of 5 stars Bob Marley on TOP!!.......2007-03-27

I was living on the island of St. Thomas in 1977 when I first heard this recording. I was on a beautiful beach, drinking those powerful rum punch drinks. Someone played the first song, "Natural Mystic" and for me, it was like being transported to another time dimension. The musical cadence and beauty of the song just captured me. I was instantly hooked to Bob Marley's music. The entire album has a quality to it that has made it one of the true classics in music. Not one bad track on the entire set. Played with passion and love by one of the greats, the main "rude boy" himself, Robert "Bob" Marley.

5 out of 5 stars My First Marley Album and Arguably the Best One!.......2007-01-14

From personal experience, I can say that if you are trying to get into Bob Marley, start with this album! Let me start out with this: A lot of people(and I used to be one of them) say that all of Bob's songs sound the same. I have learned, from actually listening to his songs thoroughly, that that is an ignorant statement. Yes, the guitar does sound the same on 98% of the songs. But I have come to learn that the guitar in Reggae is just like the drums are in others genres of music; it keeps the beat. If it didn't sound like it does in every song, then it WOULDN'T be Reggae. The appreciation comes when you listen to how the song is built up around the guitar part; the horns, the keys/piano, and especially the BASS.
Now that I've said my part, I'll talk about the album. This is, from start to finish, an excellent album. If I were to be completely honest, it took a long time for it to grow on me. But once it did, it became my favorite Bob album. It is so emotional, and it contains my second favorite Bob song "Waiting in Vain." This album is also special because I believe that this was the first recording on which Marley knew he had cancer and was dying. To make music with this much passion and make your 5 best albums(Exodus-Confrontation) AFTER you know that you have cancer deserves a hell of a lot of admiration if you ask me. Anyway, don't take my word for it, buy this album. If you don't like this one, chances are you won't really like any other Bob Marley. But if you do like this, every recording after this one is also excellent. This is not to say that all the pre-Exodus albums aren't good, but they are very different than this one.
In short, if you are trying to get to know Bob Marley's music, you should:
1)Know how to appreciate Reggae music
2)Start with this album, and if you like it, then
3)Buy any/all albums AFTER this one (Kaya-Confrontation)
4)Then move on to the ealier albums

5 out of 5 stars One of Marley's best.......2006-11-20

You'll need this album, along with Burnin' it's Bob Marley's best. So Much Things to Say is a throwaway. The rest? Natural Mystic; the Heathen and Guiltiness are all good. But everything from the militant-yet-danceable title track on is pure gold. As I have mentioned, I love the title song; Jammin' is a classic, and possibly my favorite Bob Marley song; though Waiting in Vain, the perfect love song, gives it a run for its money. You don't hear much about the sexy slow jam Turn Your Down Lights Low, a damn shame since it alone is worth the price of the disc even if you have a greatest hits. And if you can resist smiling after hearing Three Little Birds and One Love/People Get Ready, you're obviously jaded, cynical and have lost all faith in humanity (I'm not QUITE there yet). It's too bad they didn't include Punky Reggae Party on the normal album, instead sticking it on as a bonus track, since it's arguably better than any songs on the normal album - no mean feat, let me add! Make sure to buy this ASAP.

4 out of 5 stars Hooray for Hollywood!.......2007-07-22

I bought this CD to go with an Academy Awards/Hollywood Walk-of-Fame theme party that I did for work. It really lent that dramatic mood that I was looking for to usher in the theme as people entered that room on the first day after it was decorated.

Please also see my review for the CD Beautiful Hollywood.

3 out of 5 stars Eh, It's Okay.......2007-04-24

For those that purchase soundtrack collages to have a variety of songs and themes, then this is good for you. Unfortunately, these tracks didn't have the signature Erich Kunzel version of the songs as he had on other soundtrack mix CDs. It was more like just that, a mix CD of different soundtracks and scores. However, it was a good buy in the fact that the tracks chosen had excellent sound quality and a sense of harmony.

we put this CD in on a long road trip. We played a guessing game as to which one knew the movie. The music was excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Film Music.......2005-09-10

This is an outstanding collection of film music. The sound is qulity is very good. The selections cover a good range from various film genres and time periods. I like this CD.

4 out of 5 stars An Interesting and Gratifying Volume 1.......2005-08-22

Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops' interpretation of film scores on this first tribute to Hollywood is somewhat a mixed bag. A SUMMER PLACE was beautifully executed and true to the nature of this sensitive film that was made during a time of innocence. The BEN HUR, CAPTAIN BLOOD and OUT OF AFRICA selections were good. The interpretation of GOLDFINGER was a rather bizarre and blatantly bombastic exercise in overkill. This is a good CD for me because of the A SUMMER PLACE selection.

Clutch continues its seemingly endless string of awesome albums with the flawless Robot Hive/Exodus. Opening with deep-fried "The Incomparable Mr. Flannery" and closing with a Tom Waits-esqe cover of Howlin' Wolf's "Who's Been Talking?," Robot clearly demonstrates, once again, Clutch's remarkable musical diversity. Clutch's solid, trademark grooves have as much in common with Gov't Mule as they do with Black Sabbath and Grand Funk Railroad, and their ability to ooze instant classics such as the thunderous "Burning Beard" and the highly danceable "Gullah" is uncanny. Throughout, vocalist/guitarist Neil Fallon sings with a whisky-throated swagger that calls to mind the raw power of AC/DC's Bon Scott tempered with the R&B inflections of Grand Funk's Mark Farner. This blend is particularly evident on the foot-stomping "Never Be Moved." Neil might be the one hard rock vocalist capable of maneuvering with the ill ease of a hip-hop MC, crafting lyrics that are humorous and wise--one of the many gifts that help place Clutch in a class of its own, and a large part of what makes Robot Hive/Exodus a contemporary classic. --Jedd Beaudoin

5 out of 5 stars Rockers must own this.......2007-05-30

If you like (Pepper Keenan's) C.O.C., or old Blackfoot, or Black Sabbath, you will love this record. Do not hesitiate, just buy it. They are unique; I simply mention those other bands as a reference point musically (although Clutch does not sound like any particular one of them, they truly created their own sound!). Chock full of incredible riffage and fantastic lyrics as usual. After long overlooking them, Clutch has become my new favorite band, thanks to their unflinching dedication and musicianship. If you do not know them but like hard rock with attitude and yes--humor, buy this and just pres PLAY. :headbanger:

5 out of 5 stars What will they evolve into next? Something even more awesome I bet........2007-03-26

I write this review in anticipation of their upcoming album in hopes of helping to convince even more people to give this awesome but woefully overlooked band a chance.

Can a band be heavy, hard rockin', clever, thoughtful, bluesy, and even a bit funky all at once. Absolutely!
This is what Clutch has evolved into and I fully anticipate even more positive evolution to come. This is a band that could at one time certainly be classified as metal that began to recognize their strengths and gravitated towards a different sound without compromising their music at all.

Robot Hive / Exodus continues that evolution in several ways, first the keyboard sounds are much more integrated into this album than before, second the bass playing and drumming are allowed to be even funkier and third the blues infuences are even more prominent this time (the last two tracks are straight ahead blues).
None of this is to say that these guys don't still rock hard. There are plenty of hard rockin' numbers to be found on this disk.

This album like the previous Blast tyrant could be classified as a concept album in that there is pretty much a consistant lyrical theme through the album. This time it involves a robot society and the various happenings within it (which could be interpreted several ways). The lyrics are as usual for Clutch very clever and thoughtful and many tracks have themes couched in what could be classified as religious terms.

In the end this record like pretty much all Clutch albums just plain rocks. It invites you to shout and/or sing along as well as think a little bit.
Give Clutch a try, I don't think you'll be dissapointed.

5 out of 5 stars I love this album.......2007-02-20

This album rules. Almost as good as their self titled album. Can't wait to hear their new album that's being released in march.

5 out of 5 stars Clutch Writes Rock album?.......2006-07-30

Robot Hive/Exodus has eclipsed everything Clutch have ever done in my opinion. I am a metal fan who has always though to myself "Rock is Dead". This album has made me rethink that-there is a colorful resurgence of rock music in the "hard" music genres right now.

Of all the other bands making Hard Rock music, C! are the kings right now.

5 out of 5 stars Musical Evolution.......2006-06-04

I have been listening to Clutch since I first heard of them back in 1996. Bands like this are very big in the MidWest, and I have to tell you that this is one of my favorite. I think one of the things that have most impressed me about Clutch is that they have evolved thier music without changing thier musical identity. I have seen them go from hard core "Death Metal" (Impetus) to what I can only call "Funk Rock" (Elephant Riders). On this album in particular, they have a good mix of bad-@$$ riffs and funky bass lines. 100011 is probably one of the best examples of this. Most of the bands that I listen to have bad-@$$ riffs and just mediocre lyrics, but Clutch is the execption. Not only do they sound good, but thier lyrics are fresh and smart (see Blast Tyrant, Easy with that Mic). Anyways, if you don't already own all of Clutches albums (which you probably don't if you are reading this review), start out with either this album or the self titled album and then go from there. If you do own all of Clutches other albums, this one is a difinite "must have". I like this album a lot better than Elephant Riders and Blast Tyrant, but not as much as TNSL and Clutch. Hope this helped you out. Rock on!

5 out of 5 stars ESSENTIAL Thrash Record.......2007-06-19

Exodus, in my opinion, do not get the credit that they deserve. They tend to get overlooked when talking about thrash metal bands, probably because they weren't as well-known as the more influential groups like Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, or Anthrax. However, I like to credit Exodus as being a TRUE thrash metal band through and through. For instance, Metallica changed when the 90s hit. The image, the attitude, the music; they all were altered drastically due to probably fame and popularity. Anthrax and Megadeth as well changed their purposes for rocking, the former mixing rap and metal (yuck) and the latter wanting that #1 spot ever so bad (with Countdown to Extinction) and also making a commercialized pop-metal album called Risk. They were losing their edge, conforming if you will, to the demands of popularity, success, and commercial status.

But not Exodus. No, these guys were pure metal dirtbags from their rotted black teeth to their fungus-infected toenails. Never did they falter, never did they conform to the wishes of the media. Exodus' front man for this album, Paul Bailoff, in fact, was probably thee biggest metalhead of thrash, maybe surpassed only by Cliff Burton. His voice, if you've never heard him, is very unique for a thrash singer. He reminds me of Tom Araya from Slayer in the menacing way he presents the vocals and he's also similar to James Hetfield a little, cause he uses that screechy, high-pitched vocal style straight from the throat. The guy would go up to people wearing glam metal shirts, tear `em up, and wear them around his arm like trophies for God's sake; how metal is that? Anyway, this underrated band can not be tossed away like some ratty hair metal t-shirt (whoops). Bonded by Blood is easily a top-10 necessity if you wanna get into thrash metal and will be remembered by thrashers for years to come.

Many people deem Exodus' guitar riffs generic and ordinary (most likely for the sole reason of raw production), but truthfully Exodus' riffs have a great deal of substance to them and pack heavy punches. How can any metalhead NOT headbang to the main riff of "And Then There Were None"? I mean, the first few measures of the riff draw you in tight, but then the pounding drums come in and then you really can't stand still. And of course you got Paul reaching into the bowels of Hell and expressing some real malignant images as well, so really the whole bit's just unadulterated thrash. Oh, and if want catchy riffs just get an earful of the title track, "Exodus", or a little dose of "Piranha", which has a brief but driving drum intro, one of my favorite verse riffs that has sort of a Jon Schaffer (from Iced Earth) touch going, and some wicked-a$$ solos which ice the cake.

"Bonded by Blood" not only contains a catchy riff, but the chorus is insanely memorable and a great shout-along, on which Bailoff really delivers. "A Lesson in Violence" and "Metal Command" are fast-paced metal blasts with menacing vocals from Paul and driving, in-your-face thrash riffs; both add a great deal to the album. The solo on "Metal Command" is quite noodly and soaring as well, and the chorus on "Lesson in Violence" is definitely a highlight. "No Love" opens with an acoustic passage showcasing Exodus' classical side, but in no time, another infectious riff creeps up and we have another amazing song on our hands. "Deliver Us to Evil" is somewhat epic (7:10 long) and is one of the best off the album. Paul's vocals are awesome on this track and the chorus is something special too. Last but never least, the closer, "Strike of the Beast" ends the album off on an incredible note. This number has great gang vocals at the chorus and some more evil vocals from Paul.

So Bonded By Blood, while not THEE most influential thrash record, can not be taken lightly nor can it be disregarded. Yes Triple B might not be as good as more "classic" thrash albums (Master of Puppets, Peace Sells, Reign in Blood) but ask almost any diehard thrash fan, and they'll tell you, Bonded By Blood is a must have and essential for any metalheads collection.

1 out of 5 stars Bonded by Blood.......2007-05-12

Vocals are terrible, they are more like talking instead of singing. I'm selling the CD because it is so bad.

5 out of 5 stars Old School 80's Thrash Baby!!.......2007-01-23

Words just can't describe how great Exodus's debut album "Bonded by Blood" really is. I mean this is without a doubt one of the greatest thrash metal albums of the 80's. Whenever I listen to this album, I always get a serious kick of adrenaline rush. I mean this album is just heavy, fast, crazy, take no BS, in your face, headbanging old school thrash from start to finish. "Bonded by Blood" of course would be the first and only Exodus album with Paul Baloff on vocals. His vocals on here are just angry and all out pissed off throughout. Gary Holt and Rick Hunolt are very awesome guitarists. These guys rip right through your skin with wild thrashing riffs, and crazy fast dualing solos like a race car driver going 100 miles per hour. Rob McKillop's bass is pretty good, and Tom Hunting's drumming is just fast and all out merciless. Every song on here is just full of fast, crazy, thrashing heaviness, and very mosh pit worthy as well, including "Bonded by Blood", "Exodus", "Piranha", "Metal Command", "And Then There Were None", "Strike of the Beast", and of course "A Lesson in Violence" which is wihtout question one of Exodus's best songs ever and a true I DON'T GIVE A CRAP attitude like anthem as well. There's also some bonus live versions of "And Then There Were None", and "A Lesson in Violence" too. Bottom Line is this, if you're looking for some old school 80's thrash metal to just bang your head like freakin crazy, then by all means, you must own this album. LONG LIVE EXODUS!! R.I.P. PAUL BALOFF!!

5 out of 5 stars Top 3 of Thrash .......2006-07-01

Around 1984, thrash metal was born as the b*stard child of Motorhead (Overkill, 1979), the Dead Kennedys (Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables, 1980), Venom (Welcome to Hell, 1981) and Metallica (Kill em All, 1983). Three albums can be seen as defining this genre: Exodus' "Bonded by Blood" (recorded in 1984), Destruction's "Infernal Overkill" (1985) and Slayer's "Reign in Blood" (1986).

Going beyond the more 'civilised' speed/thrash metal of NWOBHM-influenced US bands like Metallica, Anthrax and Megadeth, 'real' thrash metal was characterized by a very straightforward, aggressive and more black metal & hardcore punk influenced style. You might say that Exodus contributed the basic song blueprints and overall brutality to thrash metal; Destruction provided a unique combination of intelligent, intricate songwriting and sheer intensity (the US market, mostly ignorant of the European scene, had to wait for Death Angel to deliver this kind of combo); and with Slayer everything culminated into the Reign in Blood landmark that is still the major achievement of the genre.

"Bonded by Blood" is basically one adrenalin rush from start to finish. Most songs are great, and often even quite memorable if you listen to them one by one ("And then there were none", "Lesson in Violence", "Metal Command, "Strike of the Beast", ..) but on the album they blend into such a rollercoaster of excitement and aggression, that after the album is over it's hard to remember any particular highlights.

With this head start, Exodus was predicted a rosy future among the very greats of metal. Alas, the over-the-top-but-in-a-stupid-kind-of-way lyrics already testified of the not-too-sane state of mind of singer Paul Bailoff, and in effect he was kicked out soon after making this first album. After this, Exodus reverted to a more normal but also much more boring approach, making "Bonded By Blood" the only must-have album in their discography until today.

5 out of 5 stars BONDED BY THRASH...........2006-01-06

This is the debut album of one of the greatest thrash metal bands ever which is Exodus. If you just started to listen to metal you might propely be more familar with the albums Tempo Of The Damned or Shovel Head Kill Machine but this album is one million times better than those two albums put together. The music is so fast and crazy. I can't believe that kirk Hammet left Exodus and now Exodus is like way more popular than Metallica. The song Bonded By Blood is one of my favorite songs by Exodus.

The lyrics to me are no different than any of the four original Metallica or Megadeth albums which means that they are good. The lyrics fit the music perfect and the lyrics and the music are so complexed.

This is just as good as Metallica or Megadeth. Exodus to me is underated a little. They are like five times better than anything you hear on television or the radio. The most impressive song on this album to me is Strike Of The Beast. I hope that Exodus plan on releasing more albums like a year or two in the future seeing that they just released Shovel Head Kill Machine.

5 out of 5 stars Gold's gold........2006-03-08

Ernest Gold's early version of this (main theme) tune was always a favorite of mine and it practically became Ferrante and Tiecher's theme recording (their piano version being quite good also!). However, here, you get "variations" of the music, compliments of The Sinfonia of London Orchestra, definitely classical, definitely contemporary, definitely melodic. While the background isn't exactly silent as you would find on a DDD CD recording, it's still acceptable and maybe even adds to the ambiance of what this recording is all about and the era in which the tracks were laid. I listen to it quite often. My only fault with the CD is that it's a little shyer in length than most soundtracks -- but it is what it is. Highly reccommended!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful & moving music! Not to be missed!.......2003-08-03

I can't believe that I am the first person to review such an excellent soundtrack! What can I say except that the title track, "Theme of Exodus", is probably the most beautiful piece written for a movie and the rest of the album is not far behind. Track 10 "Conspiracy" is another interesting piece with the authentic Israeli and Arabic music. Track 12 "Dawn" is one of the most dark and foreboding film pieces that I have ever heard, it definitely more than captures the mood of the scene.

The soundtrack definitely stands on its own, infact, in some ways I found the music to be understated or at very low volume levels in the movie, which for the time period of the early 60's strikes me as unsusual. I thought that the music would be more prominent, similar to one of its cotempoaries such as "Lawrence of Arabia"

I can definitely hear the inspiration for later soundtracks in this album. I believe that Basil Poledouris must have gotten some inspiration for "Conan the Barbarian" from the title track -if you have any interest to do so, listen to the two and I bet you will hear the similiarity also.

A very informative five page booklet comes with the CD. The booklet features some interesting information about the movie and music. If you are a soundtrack fan or love beautiful music, no matter you age, do yourself a favor and buy this album! If you have the movie "Exodus", buy the soundtrack so you can hear the music in all of its splendor!

In 1999, Exodus was rightfully voted the most important album of the 20th century by Time magazine. This is the visionary Bob Marley masterpiece, a concept album that distills the myriad experiences of both our daily lives and collective unconsciousness into 46 minutes of aural perfection. The deluxe CD reissue of Exodus has been flawlessly remastered from the original recordings and showcases what is probably the Wailers' tightest recorded performance. The initial notes of the album's opening track, "Natural Mystic," fade up from a deep silence, giving the listener the impression that the music generates from within a continuum of past, present, and future. The first half of Exodus bears witness to Marley's shift in focus away from the mundane problems of Babylon existence and toward a greater understanding of vital universal truths. The second half features songs like "Jamming" and "Waiting in Vain," which take a gently wistful look at the more interpersonal aspect of human relations. This deluxe edition offers a remastered and expanded version of the original album. --Rebecca Levine

5 out of 5 stars the Movement of Jah People...............2005-02-22

Exodus (the movement of JAH People) was time magazine's album of the century, that should say enough right there. But if you are not convinced buy it and you will be for sure. This album was released in 1977, and was recorded in London England. Bob Marley and members of the band survived an attempted assination in December of 1976, and went into self imposed exile in London. Here the creativity of the band is quite good, and many of the Songs that you know by Bob Marley and the Wailers appear on this disc. Jamming, Exodus, One Love, Three Little Birds, and Waiting In Vain. All the tracks are great on this disc and you can hear for the first time in all of the Wailers recordings that the quality of the recording equipment here is much better. The dummer's (Carlton Barrett) high hat never came through so clear. This album marks the intro of Junior Marvin (lead guitar)to the band. The band was about to gain superstar status and this album marks the beginning.
The second disc features some live tracks from the 1977 tour and the songs slected for the release happen to be from the 1977 Rainbow theater concerts, which will also be availble on dvd very soon. The live performances really come through and prove that the band has a tremendous vibe live and that while in concert they most certainly bring their best. the Lee Perry tracks are rather rare and are very nice to listen to. the booklet that comes with the cd can provide more insight into them and how they came to be, but just know that it is not the Wailers backing Bob on them, rather musicians from other bands. At the end is a Bob Marley promotion of the album for radio which is really nice to hear. If you are questioning yourself about this set or the single disc edition, this set offers a more diverse selection, and the bonus tracks and bonus disc are really a great addition tot he album of the century.

5 out of 5 stars includes the real 'long version' of Punky Reggae Party..........2005-02-05

This package, the 'deluxe' edition of the masterful 'Exodus' album by Marley and the Wailers, finally includes the complete nine minute and eighteen second, original version of the Lee Perry/Bob Marley collaboration 'Punky Reggae Party', recorded over two months in July/August 1977. (The single disc edition of 'Exodus' which includes 'Punky Reggae Party' says 'long version ' but it is not, lasting only six minutes before it is edited to a close, before Marley's chilling jazz scatting is complete) For this gem of collaborative genius this 'deluxe' package is worth the high price; just a bit of helpful info on this day, the 60th anniversary of Bob Marley's birth.

5 out of 5 stars Bob Marley & the Wailers At Their Very Best.......2004-11-29

The original version of this album was the album which sparked my obsession with Bob Marley & the Wailers in the Spring of 2002 and I now own all the albums and know nearly all there is to know about my fallen hero. This album is phenomonal boasting the most hits on a single album in his entire career. Each song is a song for the ages from "Natural Mystic" to "One Love/People Get Ready". This album promises to deliver everything both the hardcore and casual fan could want and more with each powerful, life-changing song.

The deluxe edition promises even more phenomonal work with rare classics like "Roots" and "Punky Reggae Party," as well as an unreleased version of "Keep On Moving," with several remixes and an excerpt from a concert to boot. If you purchase this album, I can guarentee you will not be disappointed. You'll find yourself listening to it time and time again.

5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable. Not just another pretty repackage........2004-10-01

Recently all my CDs were stolen, among them a massive collection of Marley CDs. I can now say I'm glad it happened because if it hadn't I wouldn't have begun to purchase the deluxe editions of Exodus, Catch A Fire, Rastaman Vibration, Legend, and Burnin. Exodus is the best of the deluxe editions. The sound quality, packaging, etc. are incredible. However, the best thing about the CD, which it seems the other reviewers thought so too, was the series of live songs that overlap on CD 2. It's how the Marley and the Wailer's music was meant to be heard. I loved how the songs overlapped into really one long number rather than different songs and how they exchanged words between songs. After becoming a little weary of BM and the Wailer's music because of listening to so many studio tracks I can say that I'm now back to listening to Marley everyday. CD 1 was really strong as well, especially Roots, which came through beautifully. It's great to see Island Records really putting in some effort to creating a NEW and improved release rather than just tracks in a different order and a pretty package.

5 out of 5 stars Deluxe is right!.......2004-04-08

This CD is incredible. The "Deluxe Edition" series seems to have hit the nail on the head. The sound is excellent, and the extra tracks actually add to the experience. This is one awesome CD.

I also recommend "Mississippi Muddy Waters Liver" Deluxe Edition.

4 out of 5 stars Good Thrash but not Exodus.......2007-06-27

Imagine a band that has re-vitalized itself with a classic sounding album with a (nearly) classic line-up a few years ago (Tempo of the Damned). Imagine that you loose the singer (Steve - Retro - Souza), one of the guitar players (Rick Hunolt) and the drummer (Tom Hunting) from that comeback. What do u do? For Gary Holt the answer was simple.

Recruit Paul Bostaph (ex Slayer and Forbidden), recruit a fit thrash guitarist (Lee Altus, ex-Heathen) find a new singer Rob Dukes. And go on...

Although the name is still Exodus, the sound is Exodus no more. No offence to the guys. This is AGGRESSIVE, angry and pure thrash. No doubt that this is metal. A good album with classic thrashy riffs, good vocals, good drumming. It is not a slow album also. This is pure Bay Area Thrash with roots in the underground scene. Why 4 stars? Because it does not sound like Exodus...

5 out of 5 stars Exodus: delivering Pleasant Headaches since 1982.......2006-10-14

Despite many personnel changes and breakup/reforming moves (Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammet was an original member) Exodus carry on. What do they do best? They thrash, smash and shred till the sun goes down...or till the sky falls. Either way, any Exodus album is a treat, but this one seems extra special. Shovel Headed Kill Machine has everything you could want. A Title the spews blunt trauma at first thought. An album cover that is exciting and bold as it's done with a McFarlane like artwork, helping an old band smash into the 21st century with force. Now the question is, can the music back it up?

Absolutely. I've had this thing cranked for three days now and the louder I turn it, the more the neighbors complain. The Exodus I remember from the early 80's was brought more from the raw, garage sound of thrash. This Exodus is leaner and sleeker. Meaner? Maybe, but the point is, they play fast and hard but still don't fuzz out into an abysmal static induced frenzy. Pounding drums and lightning fast guitars (listen to the track "Death Amphetamine") make this an album that to me stands out a bit more from some of their brothers in the trade. SHKM is an album that puts the thrash back in thrash but also mixes it up a lot with crunchy riffs and many changeups in tempo. The guitar parts treat us to a variety of metal styles but what I find most refreshing it the screaming virtuoso that is found throughout. Speed playing at its finest while never missing the high notes, its something you don't see as much of nowadays, but leave it to an old thrash band to bring it into the forefront again on this album.

"Karma's Messenger" is a great track that starts out with some soulful intro before smashing headfirst into a constant flurry of razor sharp riffs. The vocal efforts on here are welcome as they are not guttural growls but more quick, angry shouts that fit well within the Exodus realm. Exodus was always pretty good at mixing in good themes without straying away from the technical power that they command in their guitar and percussion parts. "Altered Boy" has a slower, heavy riff for an intro and clocks in at over seven minutes long. It soon breaks into an addictive (if not often repetitive) steady rhythm of riffs that are the background of continual shouts of rage. "44 Magnum Opus" throws us back into the speed of things and by now if your ears are not ringing, you are not playing it loud enough! A total of 10 awesome tracks grace the album. Often time's thrash gets a bad rap as its labeled "noise" or "not music". That's garbage. Music is one of the most universal things we have on this planet, and the style and genre labels should never put one down like some sort of peasant in a kingdom of kings. Exodus proves with this record that unlike many of their counterparts, they are able to forge on years later and actually progress without losing their base formula. SHKM isn't Bach but it doesn't have to be. If you want to hear thrash that is fast, furious, and yet still laden with changeups and toe tapping intros that soon lead you to raising your fist in the air, this album is for you.

4 out of 5 stars Zetro very much missed.......2006-08-04

Giving the devil his due...this album is good. It really thrashes like it should. But I'm a Zetro fan and it is too bad Gary and Steve could not get along. Exodus have a new singer who is good but is not Zetro. I'm an Exodus fan and I bought this album and it is good.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Metal albums of 2005!.......2006-07-30

For those familiar with Exodus history.. the 2005 chapter in the never-ending Exodus saga finds the band without singer "Zetro" Souza, drummer Tom Hunting and long time guitarist Rick Hunolt. This means 60% of the band that recorded "Tempo of the Damned" and toured on 2004 is gone.
I own a couple of audio bootlegs of the band playing European festivals on 2004 and to say they kicked butt is an understatement, so, I was kind of apprehensive about this album, not because of Zetro leaving but because the only remaining Exodus member is Gary Holt... and then there was one..

I've never been a fan of Zetro'a singing. I believe if the band had picked a different singer after Paul Baloff left the band, their fate would have been different, so the burning question here is: is new singer Rob Dukes a hope for all those who couldn't stand Zetro's singing?

Well, Maybe.
In the album opener Raze Mr. Dukes sounds like a genetically engineered version of Zetro and Baloff singing..
Things get a little more interesting in the following song, the awesome 8+ minute long Deathamphetamine.
In some parts of the next tune "Karma's Messenger" you can hear Mr. Dukes real voice coming out, and it (thankfully) doesn't sound like Bon Scott. In "Now Thy Death Day Come" Dukes does his best Tom Araya.. a welcome change in singing styles.

Does "Shovel Headed Kill Machine" sound like the old Exodus?
Not exactly.. to me it sounds like an improved version, with a better singer and with Paul Bostaph's amazing drumming (Dave Lombardo's replacement in Slayer) how can anything go wrong?

Regardless of whether this album sounds like vintage Exodus (which it mostly does) or not. SHKM is a truly awesome, pounding and intense thrash record, that gets better each time you listen to it..

It may not be as good as Bonded by Blood, but then again, very few albums can top Exodus' crushing debut..

After listening to this album back-to-back against Exodus' "Tempo of The Damned" and most of the top Metal albums released in 2005, i can truly say that Shovel-headed Kill Machine is a near metal masterpiece! This album in my book is one of the best releases of 2005!

5 out of 5 stars Kirk Hammett doesn't know what he left behind!.......2006-07-17

Hey, wouldn't it be great if Kirk Hammett of Metallica realized that his band had literally choked on their own 'superstardom' and rejoined his ORIGINAL bandmates, Exodus, who appear to be only getting better with age. That is, if Metallica's demise hasn't sapped him of his once excellent guitar playing ability. With the unfortunate departure of Rick Hunolt, Steve Souza and Tom Hunting leaving guitarist Gary Holt as the sole original member, Exodus is now somewhat of a partial 'supergroup' with Lee Altus (of Heathen) and Paul Bostaph (of Slayer and some other prominent bands). So I'd say that that this version of the 'Exodus lineup' is an interesting one, but that does not take away from the fact that the latest album is no less brutal than the previous 'Tempo Of the Damned', a personal favorite. So Kirk, what do you think of coming back to where you started. Where Metallica has simply run out of steam a long time ago, Exodus has just started gathering steam. An awesome release!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Gathering underground MC's with a lot of variety.......2006-09-16

The thing that got me to buy this was the outstanding guest list of featured MC's. This cd grew on me significantly, but I don't believe that it quite lives up to its high-falooting title. It's a nice listen nonetheless. Oh No is a very solid producer. He didn't become an instant favorite or anything, but his sounds are enjoyable and unique, even. The concept of using Galt McDermott samples is nice, but nothing to gawk in awe at.
Anyways, Oh No's got legends such as Posdnous (De La Soul), Wise Intelligent (Poor Righteous Teachers), Buckshot (Black Moon, BCC), and A.G. (D.I.T.C.) on here. I enjoyed Oh No's rap on the intro. The joints with Wordsworth (#9), Aloe Blacc (#10), and Cali Agents (#2) are the standouts. The album kinda sluffs off in the second half. The songs by Murs and Frank N Dank, respectively, are decent. The LMNO song was kinda tight too. This being said, if you are a fan of Oh No or of a handful of the MC's featured, this cd is worth the money.

4 out of 5 stars Very, Very Good.......2006-08-28

If you like true hip hop, buy this one. Oh No dips into the recordings of composer Galt MacDermot for nearly 100% of the beats and samples which adds a lot of musical depth. Plus, lots of great guest MCs. Near classic right off the shelf.

4 out of 5 stars You saw it comin'.......2006-08-10

For all of you who listen to real hiphop know by now that when it comes to stones throw you simply do not run the risk of buying isht hiphop lp's, and Oh No def does not break the mold, i hate to admit it but he will at some time rise above his older brother madlib (well not that i hate on Oh No, bcuz he is the isht) its just that apart from Kazi LP "The Plague" (u need this lp also) which he produced and of course Grand Agent colab it seems that the impact hes making is a lot faster and hotter than his bruv in such a short time. but check out the album phat beats dusty production and with two of my fave MC's Posdunos and AG and another up & coming (my opinion) Murs, what more persuasion do you need as a matter of fact if you dont feel this cd is worth buying just go out and buy Kris Kros's back catalogue.

    4 out of 5 stars meh.......2007-02-23

the cd is great in content. but, the level of sound is so low! when i burn my favourites with a song from this one, suddenly the volume is way down. get the remastered one instead, if there is one.

4 out of 5 stars better get insurance.......2006-04-15

For me this was the easiest exodus album to get into. I must admit i didnt listen past impact. The vocals on this album flow great and will definitly pump you up. This came out in a time when a lot of metal bands were hitting there stride and this is a keeper. I will always have fond memories of this album and highly recomend it to fans of metal.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best "Trash" Metal records of the 80's.......2006-01-27

When you speak of Thrash metal today, most people remember the bands that made the genere famous. Metallica, Anthrax, Megadeth, Overkill, and Slayer. Many forget bands such as Exodus, as they never had the popularity of the other bands, yet this remains one of the best Trash albums put out in the 80's. This was a album that when first released in 1989, I swear I didnt take it out of my walkman for 2 months straight. It was that good. Today, it doesnt quite have the same effect, but its still a classic trash album, and any fan of metal should have this in their collection, to hear what "True" metal was! Even though its not that complex, there are some lightning fast riffs and some great speed drumming for you hear. I really hope that all metal heads past and present wont forget about this classic..ENJOY

5 out of 5 stars The Height of Thrash Metal Glory.......2005-11-22

While not necessarily their best album, "Fabulous Disaster" found Exodus at their peak as a band and is nonetheless the last great album they would record (until their stunning comeback with "Tempo of the Damned"). By this point Steve "Zetro" Souza had settled in as the singer of the band rather than a mere replacement, with a unique gravelly voice somewhere between Lemmy Kilmister and Udo Dirkschneider of Accept.

The album starts off with a spoken word diatribe against the prison system which reduces the concept of imprisonment to the old Biblical inquiry: "Am I my brother's keeper?" The song itself, "The Last Act of Defiance", chronicles a real life prison riot in the early 80s and is successful more for it's palpable sense of outrage and injustice than the merits of it's dubious politics. "Fabulous Disaster" follows with the obligatory-at-the-time anti-nuke protest song, which is catchy enough and well played but fairly minor in terms of the lyrical points it scores.

Finally we have the one certified metal classic from this album, "Toxic Waltz", possibly the greatest song ever written about the essential worth of the almighty mosh pit. It's closely followed by a cover of War's immortal "Low Rider", a rendition most noted for it's wealth of guitar fills and soloing. It's in startling contrast to the laid back ennui of the original. The middle section of the album is closed out by a couple of decent but comparably forgettable tunes, "Cajun Hell" and "Like Father Like Son". The latter actually has some of the better lyrics on the album, concerning the perpetuation of negative family characteristics from a father to his progeny, but the rhythm of the song is fairly static and the topical lyrics would be decisively one-upped a year later with Anthrax's "Keep It in the Family".

But then we have "Corruption" and "Verbal Razors", two of Exodus' most incendiary offerings. One can debate the choice of Steve Souza over beloved original vocalist Paul Baloff all they want, but it's hard to deny the channelled rage effective in Souza's voice, a characteristic that drives both of these tunes and would turn up again 15 years later in the even more enraged "Scar Spangled Banner" off the aforementioned "Tempo of the Damned". "Corruption" restricts it's focus to elected officials while "Verbal Razors" lashes out at everyone with the gall to let their mouth run afoul of their convictions. To top it off you also get a cover of AC/DC's "Overdose" which is far less essential than "Low Rider", but overall the mediocre tracks are subsumed in the greatness of the rest of the album. This is a true must have for any essential thrash collection.

4 out of 5 stars Underrated thrash classic.......2005-09-11

It isn't a perfect world. If it were, Exodus would be at the top of the metal heap, having stayed true to their craft without compromise. Plus, the guitar duo of Rick Hunolt, who has just left the band (bummer) and Gary Holt, the principle songwriter of Exodus, are as exciting and innovative as any classic tag team in rock, be it Brian Robertson/Scott Gorham of Thin Lizzy, K.K. Downing and Glenn Tipton of Judas Priest, or the triple team of Dave Murray, Adrian Smith and Janick Gers of the almighty Iron Maiden.
Add to the mix the manic voice of Steve Souza, who, at times is frighteningly reminiscent of the late Bon Scott, and "Fabulous Disaster" delivers the punch, humor and originality that so many metal outfits lack.
"Toxic Waltz" and the insane cover of "Low Rider" provide the yuks. "Overdose", the old AC/DC chestnut, gets a faithful reading and the hardcore numbers like "Corruption" and "Verbal Razors" will have you headbanging your way to a migraine in record time.
Not quite as punishing as "Tempo Of The Damned", but much stronger than "Pleasures Of The Flesh", "Fabulous Disaster" is a must have for Exodus fans.
